Can the same killer strike again a hundred and fifty years later?
Estes Park, Colorado, is a place of serenity. But it wasn't always so serene. Shortly after the Civil War, Nathan Kendall and his wife were murdered there, leaving behind a young son. The crime was never solved.
Now, historian Scarlet Barlow is working at a small museum attached to a B and B, the same building where that murder occurred. She recently came to Colorado, reeling after her divorce from FBI agent Diego McCullough. Diego, who's just been asked to join the Krewe of Hunters, a unit dealing with unusual situations.
When Scarlet unwittingly takes pictures of people who've been murdered just like the Kendalls a hundred and fifty years before the police look at her with suspicion. Then the museum's statues of historic people, including Nathan Kendall, begin to talk to her, and she knows it's time to call her ex-husband. Diego heads to Estes Park, determined to solve the bizarre case that threatens Scarlet's life and to reunite with the woman he never stopped loving.
My Review:
Reading this book was so fantastic! I think it's the first book where the characters knew each before this book, had a relationship before. So yeah, that was something new and fresh, and given that this is the 17th book in the series, that's nice! *Edit to note, that it was also in Heart of Evil! Opps! Forgot! Still, 2 in 17, point still counts!*
Apparently this is set in a town that includes the place that inspired Stephen King with The Shining. Since I've never actually read any of his books that was an interesting factoid! I had to look it up, and yeah, that was pretty cool!
We were introduced to Diego in the previous book, but Scarlet was a new character! We knew that he still loved her, but in this book, we find out why they got divorced, because they both still care for each other. It was a really heart-breaking situation!
This mystery was pretty darned awesome! I mean, the photos of a murder that hadn't taken place, or had taken place 150 years ago, because the current is a copycat of the past, that disappeared? Yeah, lots of creepy going on, and made for an excellent book!
Loved reading this book, it was so fantastic, and I can't wait to finish catching up with this series!
