Week 14 Reviews: Diary of an AssCan, The Martian, Lost Sols

This short story gives us a glimpse into Mark Watney's world just before taking off on his mission for Mars. Read on for more from this exceptional character.

Please note: This story includes language that some might find offensive.

From Goodreads:
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive--and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.
But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills--and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit--he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

From Goodreads:
Corrupted data in Mark Watney's logs from Ares 3.

My first review of The Martian
My Review:
I had such a great time reading these stories! I love The Martian, and the movie, and we've only more recently got the other two stories (I don't know how I missed Dairy of an AssCan, but I did) and we just recently got Lost Sols, so I'm glad that I read them all!

AssCan, Astronaut Candidate, the internet tells me, was a lot of fun. Even knowing how wrongs things are going to go on for Ares 3, and all the foreshadowing in this story, it was really great to have this short snippet before Watney got stranded on Mars.

The Martian is such a great read, Watney was the one, if someone had to left behind, was ideal, because he was the botanist, and the engineer-as in, food, and fixing things that help keep him alive. And his personality, the humour, was just so much fun to read!

Though comparing it to the movie, it's funny, because a) he got to be Iron Man, and b) it says in the book when they brought him in, if this was a movie, everyone would come be at the airlock, which is exactly what the movie did.

Lost Sols, yeah, that was really great, that his journey to get to the Ares 4 landing site was that hard, because these sols were just skipped over in The Martian but as it turns out, a pretty difficult and annoying situation came up! I mean, 20 feet, it seems like nothing, except when it is 20 feet of nothing and you need to get to the other side. Loved how Watney dealt with it!

These were all so fantastic to read and I can't wait to read more by Andy Weir!
