Week 20 Review: This Darkness Mine

From Goodreads:
Mindy McGinnis, award-winning author of The Female of the Species and A Madness So Discreet, returns with a new dark and twisted psychological thriller—perfect for fans of Gone Girl and Fight Club.

Sasha Stone knows her place—first-chair clarinet, top of her class, and at the side of her Oxford-wearing boyfriend. She's worked her entire life to ensure her path to Oberlin Conservatory as a star musician is perfectly paved. But suddenly there's a fork in the road in the shape of Isaac Harver. Her body shifts toward him when he walks by, and her skin misses his touch even though she's never known it. Why does he act like he knows her so well—too well—when she doesn't know him at all?

Sasha discovers that her by-the-book life began by ending the chapter of another: the twin sister she absorbed in the womb. But that doesn't explain the gaps of missing time in her practice schedule, or the memories she has of things she certainly never did with Isaac. Armed with the knowledge that her heart might not be hers alone, Sasha must decide what she's willing to do—and who she's willing to hurt—to take it back.

My Review:
With a title including Darkness, you have to guess that some element in the book is going to be dark. And the fact that it's the main character, well, that makes it central to the story, and it was just fantastic to read!

Sasha has always been the good girl, she gets good grades, she doesn't act out, and she has a future that she's working hard for. And then she finds out that she had a twin that she absorbed in the womb, well, that throws her plans into chaos. It was so entertaining to read!

That ending was pretty darned creepy! I mean, it was pretty brilliant, because otherwise, she might not have been the one to get the transplant, what with the "mental illness" bit being a bar against transplantation. But it was gory and so damaging all around!

The question you have to ask yourself is, is Sasha crazy, or was her heart actually her twin's, she was communicating with her twin? Because while Sasha is cold and intelligent and cruel and has her dark side, that doesn't necessarily mean that she's using the excuse of someone else doing the bad deeds that are her own. It could, but it might not be, thus the question...

This book was dark and pretty intense, and I enjoyed it so much!
