Week 37 Review: Magic Outside the Box

From Goodreads:
Henri is quite accustomed to dangerous and unusual cases landing in his lap. Being partnered to the Shinigami Detective likely has something to do with it. What he is NOT accustomed to is the queen herself marching into his lab and handing them such a case.

Former Royal Mage Joseph Burtchell was found dead in his home, all signs pointing to murder. However, it's in question as to how the murderer accomplished the deed—the house was locked, the wards fully up, and the body bearing a peculiar wound.

It's a locked room mystery, one with a suspiciously absent murder weapon and lack of suspects. Henri's left baffled. Jamie's excited, relishing the challenge the case represents.

Who's powerful enough to thwart a royal mage's wards and murder him undetected?

My Review:
Of course, this book was utterly amazing! I enjoyed reading it so much! From the mystery and the characters, to the little notes that they left each other in the case file notes, which is this story...yeah, this book was such an excellent read!

I had thought that this book was a bit shorter than the others. And according to Goodreads, the first two books were 280 and 250 pages long, to this book's 200 pages. I would've loved to have had more story, more time with these characters, but better to be shorter and not have potential filler.

The mystery is of a locked room, and given that it's magic, that adds another layer of complication to the mystery. Because the victim was a powerful mage, well, how did the murderer get in and out of the wards? Also, the way he was killed was somewhat of a puzzle, because they'd never seen something like that before!

After this book, things are going to be different, they're going to be consultants for the Kingsmen, though I wonder if that means they won't work for the police anymore....I can't wait to see what new mysteries they'll encounter in their new jobs!

Loved this book so much, and yeah, can't wait to see where this series goes next!
