The conclusion to the Wintersong duology, Shadowsong by S. Jae-Jones.
Six months after the end of Wintersong, Liesl is working toward furthering both her brother's and her own musical careers. Although she is determined to look forward and not behind, life in the world above is not as easy as Liesl had hoped. Her younger brother Josef is cold, distant, and withdrawn, while Liesl can't forget the austere young man she left beneath the earth, and the music he inspired in her.
When troubling signs arise that the barrier between worlds is crumbling, Liesl must return to the Underground to unravel the mystery of life, death, and the Goblin King—who he was, who he is, and who he will be. What will it take to break the old laws once and for all? What is the true meaning of sacrifice when the fate of the world—or the ones Liesl loves—is in her hands?
My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book. But it was harder to read than the first book, and the author explains in the beginning, that if the first book was her hope, then this book was her depression. And yeah, this book is Shadowsong, and we have to deal with the events of the first book, so it makes sense!
We mainly had Liesl's perspective, dealing with having being let go by the Goblin King, and wondering if she is fully sane or not. We also got glimpses of the Goblin King, which were pretty heartbreaking, given the situation that hew as in. And we got to see Josef and the young man that he's with, and I enjoyed seeing all of their stories and how they came together!
The big problem in this book that isn't personal, aren't the mental illness questions, is that there was no sacrifice. Now things are out of balance. And how that balance might be recovered, which isn't good for the ones who broke it!
The way everything wrapped up was so bittersweet to read. There was a victory, but it came at a cost, and that cost is high, thought not the worst kind of cost. But one that gives and takes, and keeps going. So it was a great ending for this duology!
This was a really fantastic read, I really enjoyed it, and I can't wait to read more by S. Jae-Jones!
