Can Evie convince her rival loves to work together? Their survival depends on it in this third book of #1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole's Arcana Chronicles, a nonstop action tale of rescue, redemption, and a revenge most wicked.
Heartbreaking decisions
Evie was almost seduced by the life of comfort that Death offered her—until Jack was threatened by two of the most horrific Arcana, The Lovers. She will do anything to save him, even escape Death's uncanny prison, full of beautiful objects, material comforts…and stolen glances from a former love.
Uncertain victory
Despite leaving a part of her heart behind with Death, Evie sets out into a frozen and perilous post-apocalyptic wasteland to meet up with her allies and launch an attack on The Lovers and the vast army they command. Such formidable enemies require a battle plan, and the only way to kill them once and for all may mean Evie, Jack, and Death allying. Evie doesn't know what will prove more impossible: surviving slavers, plague, Bagmen and other Arcana—or convincing Jack and Death to work together.
Two heroes returned
There's a thin line between love and hate, and Evie just doesn't know where she stands with either Jack or Death. Will this unlikely trio be able to defeat The Lovers without killing one another first?
My Review:
I loved this book so much! I just devoured it, and my only complaint/wish, is that these books were longer! I want to spend so much more time with Evie, Jack, and Aric, and all the other characters, because they are just awesome, and I just love these books so much!
A ton happens in this book. Like we start off with Evie running to save Jack, and away from Aric. Which, given how Endless Knight ended, raised some questions. And we did get to see what happened. Later. Which causes them to have a few conversations!
And yeah, things just happened from there, like Tess using her powers. And we got to learn more about the various other Arcana, and some of the various grudges Evie, because apparently her previous selves betrayed a lot of people, from Aric, The High Priestess, and the Lovers. And that's why they are after her. And yeah, I enjoyed how that played out, though it was very creepy! And we learned a bit more about Matthew, that he can be overloaded by too many Arcana together!
This book is also where Evie had to make a choice-between Jack and Aric. Which is heart wrenching, because we want all 3 of them to be happy, and at least 1 one of them is going to be unhappy, and Evie's losing that one. And that kinda plays out in the ending, which is another cliffhanger, I can't wait for the next book!
In the book, when Evie and Matthew are talking about an inactivated Arcana, well, I think Jack's it. Because it just kinda makes sense. And then the ending? With Evie determined to believe that Jack's alive? Yeah, I'm leaning towards Jack being an Arcana!
Favourite lines: "Those bastards had driven me into a trap; Cyclops ate the trap." Ha, ha, you lose! "I'd trusted him to steer me through a minefield (talk about a team-building exercise.)" Yeah, that kinda means that you trust him! "I can't believe I'm going along with this. I hate it when girl uses their wiles. Normally, I'd just strangle him until he agreed." The violence! Just love it! "The stone forest. After the Flash, men lacked cover for shootouts; instead of—oh, I don't know—not shooting at each other, they’d built rock trees." Of course, it's guys, and the end of the world! "This game, he calls himself Richter. As in scale. We should thrash him just for that." Yes, you should, seeing what he's going to do! "All I wanted was to return you to our home, yet now I find myself aiding my most hated enemy to save another card. You lead me on a merry chase, little wife." Oh, Aric, the things you say! "If felt good to rid in and save her didn't it? Imagine how good she feels whenever she vanquishes her enemies-on her own." That's a bit harsh, Aric! It's not Jack or Evie's fault that you kidnapped her and they've been apart for 3 months! "Not that Thanatos needed rest. Thanatos bench pressed three eighty and ate bricks for fun." I can't remember, or know, if she's joking or not! I do know the sentiment is true, though! "An amoeba would've learned by now not to shoot at Aric's armor." Well, they are slavers, so they don't have the brains of an amoeba! "'Eight to seven.' 'Only one ahead of me? And you got body armor from head to toe.' 'The two of them were acting like such...guys." And it's so cute! "For this bliss, I'll risk the bullet. I'll take a bullet." That is very raw, Aric! "Even though he'd named his horse Thanatos and he'd discovered his armor on a corpse in a bone crypt, I'd never thought of Aric as so, well, death-y." It takes him saying he likes churches and even more so, graveyards, to come to this conclusion? Huh. "I remember Philip the Second once wrote to the Spartans, saying, 'If I enter Laconia, I will raze Sparta.'Do you know what they wrote back? One word: If." Well, that's badass! Love! "Tided him beside Thanatos. In proximity to sharpened hooves. I guarantee nothing." And Milo will deserve anything bad coming his way!
I loved this book so much! It was just so good! I can't wait for more, the wait is evil!
