After escaping the Skylords, Haden, Daphne, and their friends decide to try to find the Key of Hades on their own before Persephone's Gate opens again on the spring equinox. They think they can use the Key as leverage to stop the Court from coming after Daphne, and stop them from releasing the Keres on the mortal world. Once in Olympus Hills, Haden and Daphne find themselves with some hiccups in their plan. Haden's twin brother, Rowan, reveals himself to have been following Haden's entire mission, and the Skylords have sent a group of their own to enroll at Olympus Hills High to spy on Haden and Daphne.
As the spring equinox looms, the gang finds an unlikely ally in one of the Skylords who helps them devise a plan for getting the Key and using it to destroy the Keres before they can break free from the Pit and devour the world. In order to fulfill the plan, Daphne must enter the Underrealm with the Key. Unfortunately, because of the oath Haden made to never bring Daphne back there, he is unable to accompany Daphne. Reluctantly, he agrees to let Garrick and Tobin take her through Persephone's Gate, while he and the Skylord wait for them on the other side.
Separated in two different worlds, but still linked by destiny, Haden and Daphne must race against time to keep the Keres from revolting and keep themselves-and their love-alive.
Reading this only a few months after reading The Shadow Prince, well, not as many books between them, so yeah, we did get a few good details that set the world up again, but that weren't like, overbearing, taking over the story, but natural details that we needed again!
So this book dealt with some of the plot lines from the first one. Finding out who Motorcycle man is, where he is, and how to get the Compass back from him, Daphne dealing with her dad's betrayal, that he traded her soul for his fame, even if he did it before he knew that Daphne was being expected.
We also got some new things, like Tobin's POV, and meeting some Skylords, the one mentioned above, which was pretty cool, learning a bit more about this world, and that the call the Key of Hades, The Eternity Key.
And oh, I just connected this, a big twist at the end, with one little detail in the book, that just adds more to the whole twist, and yeah, because they thought it was one person, but it was another, and still this twist hurts, but now the knife has gone in just a bit further!
I felt pretty bad for Haden, both for things that he knows, and we know, to thinks that we know that he doesn't, from the twist above, which will probably hurt him a lot, and how things ended for him in this book, not in a very good place, and with a countdown, too! Oh, and he has to deal with his feelings for Daphne!
Favourite lines: "Admitting to myself that I am in love with Daphne had been hard enough—and
it had taken the imminent threat of my death to get me to do it." So telling Daphne would be nigh on impossible! "'Who cares about Mr. Morgan?' I ask. 'Um, me,' Lexie says. 'Me, too,' Tobin says. 'Especially me,' Daphne says." I think you're outnumbered, Haden! Also the responses to his question are hilarious! "Because your Mr. McHottypants is a freaking Skylord. And his Skylord nephew is behind us." Which is a very bad thing, seeing as the Skylords are the ones that are 1/2 of the bad guys! "Okay, so maybe that's too much cinnamon." I would think so! Haden's little cooking adventure is so cute! "Apparently, we're taking in strays with parental issues tonight." Yeah, 2 in one night! It's like a sleep over, but like, serious! "Dax volunteers as the assistant for the props and costume master—a job he seems to be taking quite seriously, considering he's only using it as an excuse to be here." I find this quite funny! "'I couldn't let you pay for the pizza I ordered.' 'It's not a big deal. It's Simon's account anyway.' 'In that case...'" Yes, spend Simon's money! "Seriously, his password was kale chips?" Yeah, that's a weak password, considering how old he could be! "Why do people always want to have secret rendezvous at midnight? Why not 11:27 or 4:30 in the afternoon?" Yeah, especially since other times would be less suspicious!
This was a really fantastic, wonderful, amazing book, and yeah, the wait for the 3rd, and I think final, book, is going to be torture, especially since this doesn't come out for another 7 months! I hope that the 3rd is up on NetGalley!
