From Goodreads:
Marianna Zain is in trouble. The handsome stranger she just kissed? He's a member of the most terrifying hate-group in the universe. Even after he takes her captive, Marianna can't shake her initial instincts that he's a man of worth…and her only chance at escaping death.
One of Sanctify's most decorated lieutenants, Gerard Leoni thought he had everything figured out. But then he crosses paths with a Diviner, the most despised of the alien races, and is honor-bound to bring her in. One night with Marianna makes him question everything he knows.
As the day of her scheduled execution draws near, Marianna forms a plan. She's going to seduce Gerard—a task that would be simpler if she weren't being seduced as well. But Sanctify doesn't take kindly to their people cavorting with aliens, and instead of finding a savior, Marianna may be dragging Gerald to his death alongside her…
From Goodreads:
When the cards tell Ophelia Leoni she's supposed to marry the Prince of Hansarda, the gunrunner grits her teeth and boards the starship that comes for her. It doesn't matter if the ship's commander is the gorgeous stranger whose bed she just spent a wild, drunken night in. As a Diviner, she's painfully aware the cards don't lie. Ever.
Boone O'Keirna knows Ophelia is trouble the second he sees the way she moves. Not about to let the deadly little hellcat marry his sadistic half-brother, Boone pretends to be the Prince's emissary and kidnaps Ophelia. Too bad they can't be in the same room without him wanting to throw her out an airlock–or into bed.
Even as they fight each other–and their explosive attraction–Ophelia and Boone sense something is wrong. Too much is going their way. Soon, they realize while the cards may never lie, the truth is sometimes hidden between them…and the future king of Hansarda is not one to take defeat lying down.
From Goodreads:
When Jenny O'Keirna gets a chance to slip her older brother, the new king of Hansarda's, leash, she jumps at it, even if it means playing babysitter to a too-smart-for-his-own-good inventor. She's not expecting the attraction that sparks between them—or that Sanctify is just as desperate to take him for their own.
Never in Mac Flannery's wildest dreams did he imagine Jenny would be the one sent for him. He sees beyond the mad grin the sexy princess of Hansarda presents to the world, and that combination of vulnerability and wicked humor is a siren call he can't resist.
But Sanctify is always three steps ahead of them. On the run—and unable to keep their hands off each other—Jenny and Mac devise an insane plan: kidnap the leader of Sanctify, and stop this war once and for all. Unfortunately, they've just played right into his hands…
My first review of Queen of Swords
My Review:
I loved these books so much! I had read Queen of Swords before, but it's been so long since then, and I've read so many other books, so it was nice to read this series, all that's out, all together, because man, are they eye-kickers in a good way!
In The High Priestess, I wanted to go, like, either the Lady is more powerful then Ba'al, and can show her "love" in the form of the ability to tell the future, or the Lady is less selfish in sharing her power. It just proves that Sanctity, as an organization, is flawed! Love to hate is so much!
I felt so bad for Gerard, his whole life has been turned upside down, meeting and bringing in Marianna, to learning the above, that his beliefs are wrong, and then his son is killed. Or so he was told. I don't think the High Priest would squander an opportunity like that (at least, that's how he would see it, I think) and raise the boy as an orphan, just like Gerard, to be a solider, one that could be used against his dad later on! And since I wrote that after I read The Hight Priestess, but not after Queen of Wands, yeah, it feels good to be right!
But it was so weird, because Ophelia is Marianna and Gerard's daughter! I was hoping that it wasn't like that, but oh, well! At least we got their story, and yeah, it added so much more to the universe! In the long run, I'm glad I was wrong! Though apparently Gerard has changed, he doesn't believe in the cards working any more because it seemed like he did at the end of The High Priestess! But that just makes Ophelia's pregnancy, and then Marianna's death, more poignant!
Yeah, loved Jenny and Mac's story, because Mac was mentioned a few times in Swords, but we never got to meet him, which sucks, but now we do get to meet him, which rocks. And Jenny, she was pretty spectacular in Swords, her fighting skills, how she was the Queen of Wands in Swords when Ophelia did the one reading, and yeah, it built up some of the issues that she had to deal with in Wands!
Favourite lines from The High Priestess: "You aren't planning to lure me into a dark alley to murder me, are you?" Well, that would put a damper on things! "The devil, the High Priest, and anyone else fool enough to come after us." Yeah. Because they're stronger together!
Favourite lines from Queen of Swords: "Ophelia couldn't find her underwear." That's certainly he k an eye popping opener! "You're right. I'm not a nice girl." Yeah, seeing as you're a not so nice guy! "No. Just...no." Why? There was a connection before the whole kidnapping! "When he reached for the knife he kept in his boot, he knew he was in trouble. This wasn't supposed to be a battle. This was just one woman..." Yeah, you know it's not going to be that easy! "Thinking about sex hie she held his death in her eyes was a token of just how far gone he was." Yeah, pretty far! "Throwing Jenny into the mix would be like adding accelerant to witchfire." So, bad! "Nope Absolutely not. No way she was going there." But then you do! "Because if he had the nerve to die when she was having his baby, she'd hunt the rat bastard through the deepest reaches of the seven hells just so she could bring him back and kill him again." And he'd deserve it! "'How am I going to explain to my baby that their auntie was just as stupid and suicidal as their father?' And mother, if they were going to be honest." Because true, she's crazy, too! "Her stomach lurched, retreating to somewhere near her left ankle." That's a strange place for it to be! "Ah hells. This was definitely an alt universe. There was no other explanation for Ophelia actually liking the damn albino." Well, it could be because the 2 of them are pretty similar!
Favourite lines from Queen of Wands: "The woman was freaking scary before she went into labor, with her eerie knack for knowing things she shouldn't and her sweet skills with a knife. Now she was just plain terrifying. Thank the gods keeping her happy wasn't Jenny’s burden to bear." Yeah, instead, it'll be you that's scary during labour, if you get pregnant! "The thought of you reproducing...just don't." Yeah, her kids would be something of a challenge! "
Yeah, this series so far has been excellent, and I can't wait for Queen of Pentacles, because yeah, it's going to be fantastic!
