The Rand scientific expedition entered the lush wilderness of the Amazon and never returned. Years later, one of its members has stumbled out of the world’s most inhospitable rainforest—a former Special Forces soldier, scarred, mutilated, terrified, and mere hours from death, who went in with one arm missing . . . and came out with both intact. Unable to comprehend this inexplicable event, the government sends Nathan Rand into this impenetrable secret world of undreamed-of perils to follow the trail of his vanished father . . . toward mysteries that must be solved at any cost. But the nightmare that is awaiting Nate and his team of scientists and seasoned U.S. Rangers dwarfs any danger they anticipated . . . an ancient, unspoken terror—a power beyond human imagining—that can forever alter the world beyond the dark, lethal confines of Amazonia.
My Review:
This was such a great book! It's a reread, but it's been so long since I've read it, maybe around 2008, maybe? So yeah, it's been forever, and I hadn't remembered most of it, but yeah, really enjoyed rereading it a lot!
Man, the Rangers, they don't seem to survive all to well in the rainforest! From river creatures, to kidnapping to various threats of the rainforest sent by the tribe that the others fear, that's just surrounded in mystery, yeah. And then the traitor, Richard Zane, that was just awful! But he got what he deserved!
The whole disease thing, with the prions, and how viral it was, well, since I'm pretty sure prions are the scientific bad guy in The Judas Strain, that upped my liking of this book! And it was a really interesting mystery, and with some personal connections!
The ending, there was just a lot going on, from Nate's dad being alive, the figuring out of the balance of the healing, and not going to far, and having the cancers, and how the tree has all of that, and the attack, Manny's death, that the things healed her so she could get pregnant, and Tor-Tor's mate burying that seed from the tree, and then leaving it, yeah, that was an ending!
Favourite lines: "'It spreads its gill spines and embeds itself in place, blocking the bladder and killing you most excruciatingly in about twenty-four hours.' 'How do you get rid of it?' 'The only cure is to cut the victim's penis off and extract the fish.'" Which is a guy's worst nightmare, basically! "The buddy system is essential to survival-it gives the enemy somebody else to shoot at." Wow, that's a real partnership!
This was such a great book, I loved rereading it, and I can't wait to keep going on this rereading streak, still going strong after a year and a half!
