Regret was for people with nothing to defend, people who had no water.
Lynn knows every threat to her pond: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and, most importantly, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn't leave at all.
Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. Having a life means dedicating it to survival, and the constant work of gathering wood and water. Having a pond requires the fortitude to protect it, something Mother taught her well during their quiet hours on the rooftop, rifles in hand.
But wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it….
With evocative, spare language and incredible drama, danger, and romance, debut author Mindy McGinnis depicts one girl’s journey in a barren world not so different than our own.
My Review:
This book was slightly confusing at first, what with the names, and the way things were arranged. But once I had that down, things were going! I just loved this book, because the threat of clean water, or lack of it, it's one of the most primal one. We can survive just 3 days without water, which is the average, which means some can survive more, some less. Plus I think that's in optimum conditions, And life hardly ever gives optimum conditions, does it?
I enjoyed Lynn's story, because it's more then that. It's also something of a romance story, and about building a community after the world pretty much has ended. Because Lynn doesn't stick to all that her mom taught her. Because some things are more important to her.
I enjoyed how Lynn would help the boy, and the baby, and how she grow to care for both of them. Speaks for why it ended like it did! And then the old guy with his place nearby, and how they communicated, that was just awesome!
The ending hurt a bit. I mean, he was killed. And she loved him, and now lost him. And that sucks. But life's hard, and then there's still the baby girl to take care of. But the plus side, is that this ending has that community coming together, and that there's a sequel, yeah!
I enjoyed this book so much, it was just so entertaining and good! Can't wait for the sequel!
