Week 46 Reviews: The Brokenhearted, The Invisible

From Goodreads:
A teenage girl is transformed into a reluctant superhero and must balance her old life with the dark secret of who she has become.

Prima ballerina Anthem Fleet is closely guarded by her parents in their penthouse apartment. But when she meets the handsome Gavin at a party on the wrong side of town, she is immediately drawn into his dangerous world. Then, in a tragic accident, Anthem falls to her death. She awakes in an underground lab, with a bionic heart ticking in her chest. As she navigates her new life, she uncovers the sinister truth behind those she trusted the most, and the chilling secret of her family lineage…and her duty to uphold it.

From Goodreads:
In the riveting sequel to the reimagined superhero story The Brokenhearted, Anthem Fleet takes on a powerful new villain and makes some startling discoveries about her family and her past that will forever change her.

Taking up where The Brokenhearted ended, the sequel finds Anthem Fleet attempting to return to a normal life after an experimental surgery that left her with a bionic hummingbird heart and a terrifying new strength. But she can't shake her suspicions about her father's connection to the Syndicate and she can't ignore the cries of help in the crime-ridden city of Bedlam. She finds new promise in her relationship with Ford, but after his lifesaving surgery, the Ford Anthem knew slips away.

When a mysterious new group called "The Invisible" starts attacking the privileged North Siders, Anthem has to step up and be the New Hope that Bedlam needs, or Bedlam will fall…once and for all.

My Review:
So, funny story around this. I really wanted to read The Brokenhearted. It sounded fantastic. And then I forgot about it. Skip to about a month ago, and I was going through the books I'd downloaded from Edelweiss, to set up an alert from my calender a week before the book was published, so I could review it around then. And when I was looking at The Invisible, I saw it was book #2, so then I had to read book #1, and it turned out to be The Brokenhearted! So I was really excited!

These were superhero books to me. I mean, she has the ability to run really fast, heal really fast, gains heightened hearing, and the ability to defy gravity a bit. And all because of a new heart that she gets because her original one stopped for 40 minutes in the river. And the new one is robotic, with hummingbird DNA, meaning that it beats 10 times faster.

One big comment I want to make is, who in the world would name a city Bedlam? I mean, the definition of the word is "a scene or state of wild uproar and confusion." That's not really something that you'd name a city. And I couldn't tell, if this was like Batman with Gotham, or if this was set in an alternate world, or even on a different planet sometime in the future! And that question of where it is, is a question I'd love answered in a future book!

Adding to the Gotham feel of the book, is that there's a criminal organization called the Syndicate, and it's the cause of most of the bad things that happen in the city, it's infiltrated or bought off the police, it takes "stay in business" bribes from the big companies so to let said companies go on. And yeah, then comes Anthem. Because they killed her boyfriend. But then yeah, turns out the boyfriend orchestrated it, was conning her. And is in fact, the "Boss" of the Syndicate. Thus, The Brokenhearted as the title. Not fun for her to learn that, but better learning it, then never have!

Oh, and there was a guy, 16 years ago, called The Hope, that started to take down members high up in the Syndicate, and got the people to rise up with riots. And now, Anthem, with her powers, is New Hope, for all the good she's done for the city!

The Invisible built on the foundations of that, with the group going after the rich and powerful, to even the scales, but seeing as their members are people from an insane asylum, and are on drugs, violence is inevitable, causing personal harm to Anthem, and unveiling some secrets.

I really enjoyed the chapters that we got, of the past, from The Hope, Regina, and then finally, Anthem's dad, which unveils a new secret-Anthem's parents aren't the Fleets, they're The Hope and Regina, and those that raised her are actually her grandparents. Oh, and her grandfather accidentally killed her mom. And then had a hit and run with her dad. Yeah. Not something that you'd want to learn, but opens it up for her meeting her real dad, another reason for a sequel!

Yes, loved these books so much, and I'd really love more in this series, like a bad guy of the week, format thing, each book! That'd be awesome!
