Thea Galehouse has always known how to take care of herself. With a flighty club-owner mom and a standoffish, recovering-alcoholic dad, Thea has made her own way in her hometown of New York, attending the prestigious and competitive Stuyvesant High School. But one chat with Will, a handsome and witty senior, and she's a goner—completely hooked on him and unable to concentrate on anything else.
Always worried that she loves Will more than he loves her, Thea is pleasantly surprised when their romance weathers his move to college and Will goes out of his way to involve her in his life. But then, Thea misses a period. And that starts Thea and Will on a wild ride that neither of them could have possibly prepared for. When they decide to keep the baby, their concerned parents chip in what they can to keep Will in school and give both teenagers a comfortable place to raise their child. But when a freak accident leaves Thea shaken and threatens to upend their little family altogether, Thea is forced to turn to the last place she would have chosen for comfort: her stiff, uncompromising father.
This smart, touching first novel brims with realistic, beautifully drawn characters, and reminds us that love is never as easy or predictable as we might like it to be.
My Review:
Wow. This book deals with a pretty tough issue, teenage pregnancy, (and the timing of me reading it, just a week after reading Bumped, is just weird) and it has a pretty positive ending, and yeah, I really liked that! Thea was just so strong, with having her baby when she was just around 18 or so, just after graduating high school, well, that would be hard for anybody, just having a baby, but Thea does it on top of all these other things, like the fact that her life was just really starting, and the freak accident, well, she and the baby survive, and she's just really strong, and I loved that!
Thea is, like I said, strong, and she's smart, she's resourceful, and practical. She was raised in what can't be considered a stable environment, with her mom owning a strip club with Thea was young, and her dad was an alcoholic, and yeah, Thea had to fend for herself a bit. And so when she realizes that she's pregnant, well, she figures out that she has to keep her baby, because it's a bit of her and Will, her boyfriend. And keeping and raising a baby when you've just left HS takes a lot of guts. And Thea has them. And she works out her problems.
I honestly think that the freak accident, well, was a bit of an overreaction on the one character's part. Especially since it tears the family apart, and it's a pretty pivotal point in the book, I really enjoyed it, even if it was a bit sad, and heartbreaking. But Thea gets through it, and proves her strength.
This was just an awesome book, and I loved it, and I can't wait to see what Catherine Greenman writes next!
