Week 44 Reviews: Justice Buried, Lexan's Pledge

From Goodreads:
The people need Justice, but she's not listening. One hundred years before, the Great Sickness reduced the world to three cities. Now the community of Asphodel is trapped underground, waiting for the prophesied maiden of Justice to return and save them from their Fates. Sixteen-year-old Astrea is supposed to be this savior - too bad for them she isn't a believer. Trea fights against her false destiny: she rebels against her family and friends, then refuses her arranged marriage to the charming but deceitful Lexan. Learning her life is in danger, Trea is forced to trust Lexan - until she discovers a power she never knew she had, and one he already knew he did. As betrayal closes every door, Trea decides she must submit to her stars and accept her fate. Then a handsome stranger offers her an unexpected escape and the chance to create her own destiny.

From Goodreads:
There will come three...
A child of peace, born in a place of war.
A child of right, born in a place of many wrongs.
A child of lawfulness, born in a place with no laws.

The secrets of Asphodel continue to spill as Lexan tells his side of the story. Lexan has been pretending for so long that he barely remembers why. All he knows is that it's getting harder to be the image of perfection that everyone expects. With Keirna plotting murder, Saloman having visions, and Trea throwing tantrums, Lexan just might be ready to risk his world for the chance at a better one.

My Review:
So yeah, I really enjoyed this book-I wasn't expecting too much, honestly, from the description, because it just sounded weird, not knowing what the importance in the stars these people have. Even though they've never seen them, or the sun, or the moon.

The book this most reminded me of, was The City of Ember, an underground city, with resources starting to not keep up with the population, teens basically being assigned jobs, and it's the job of the heroine to be getting them out (forced on Trea, self appointed for Lina) yep. And yeah, I really enjoyed comparing them, and noting the differences!

So the religion, it seemed to be drawn from Greek stuff, what with the names of the cities, and then the Fates were mentioned in a prayer thing, and yeah, that was pretty awesome, and interesting, because they didn't seem to know where those roots came from. Though they could, the story wasn't really focused there!

I found it a bit funny, the chapter thing, at the top, of chapter 8 on Justice Buried, was an extended and changed version of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, where the first 2 lines are how they are, but then the next, is different, then there's 3 more. Just a little bit hilarious!

I really enjoyed Lexan's Pledge, because we got to have a look into his head, why he did what he did, when we were in Trea's head, we pretty much thought he was a womanizing (technically girlalizing) charmer, yeah, it was great to see why he was acting like that!

Favourite lines from Justice Buried: "I don't know what's going on with you two, but you made that boy mad." Yes, most assuredly, she did!

Yes, fantastic start to the series, and my review of book 2 is already up, so yeah, I've really enjoyed this series thus far!

  1. Thanks for the nice reviews! And on the Twinkle Little Star - there are several older versions of this floating around! I liked how well it seemed to fit with the word "wanderer" and Stian's name.
