Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.
And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.
Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages--not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.
When one of the strangers--beautiful, haunted Akiva--fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?
My Review:
This book was plotted in a way that ensures that I'll remember it always. At first it's Karou and Akiva in the present day in Prague, and Marrakesh, and some flashbacks of this previous life, and around halfway through, it's the main story of the previous life, and some current time of what Karou is doing, and as everything comes together, the links between the lives, that the past life is Karou's and the reason why baby teeth were wanted, was to make a new body, for this soul to be put into the body of Karou, so she could grow up as a human, and not like the rest of her fellow Sons and Daughters made of Smoke and Bone and pain and magic because Brimstone had to protect her-she wasn't supposed to be brought back. Because of her and Akiva. Yep. It was really quite complex! And I loved it!
Karou is a mysterious character, both to the people she lets be with her, and to herself. She doesn't know where she comes from, and she is the messenger to this strange creature called Grimstone, with friends who are very strange to her. And then when she's cut off from this world, she tries to bring it back, meanwhile balancing this with the strange guy, Akiva, who tried to kill her, and and then when it goes to the flashback, with the wishbone, and Akiva and the romance, and well, that led to a shocking end.
But the war was kinda pointless, the angels weren't winning, and the other side was just barely surviving, and that's because they had the magic, but due to both vital information being told to Akiva, and then him being released, that leads to the cut off of Earth to the other side, and then it's going to lose because it can't get more teeth. And it's because Akiva told his brothers and sisters and they started the plan, and that was what cut Karou off. Yep.
The ending was spectacular, because there was still 1 way to get to the angel/creature world, and Karou was going there. And the next book will be just as good, I'm betting, and hoping for, this was just a wonderful book!
If you haven't read The Daughter of Smoke and Bone, well, you better soon, because it is 400 + pages of greatness! And addicting, and just an awesome book! Read it, like, now!!!!
