When you're being hunted, who can you trust?
For the first time since she escaped from her school many months ago, Eve can sleep soundly. She's living in Califia, a haven for women, protected from the terrifying fate that awaits orphaned girls in The New America.
But her safety came at a price: She was forced to abandon Caleb, the boy she loves, wounded and alone at the city gates. When Eve gets word that Caleb is in trouble, she sets out into the wild again to rescue him, only to be captured and brought to the City of Sand, the capital of The New America.
Trapped inside the City walls, Eve uncovers a shocking secret about her past--and is forced to confront the harsh reality of her future. When she discovers Caleb is alive, Eve attempts to flee her prison so they can be together--but the consequences could be deadly. She must make a desperate choice to save the ones she loves . . . or risk losing Caleb forever.
My Review:
Gah, this was a really great book! I enjoyed spending more time with Eve and Caleb, though it was mostly Eve, since Caleb wasn't really there, they were separated! Which wasn't fun for them, but oh, did it cause some conflict!
This is the book where we really got to see the world from the perspective of someone who isn't running from the government. When someone isn't running, then they have the time to take in the details, and that change added so much world building! So perfect in the middle book!
Loved the developments in this book, from learning more about this world, meeting quite a few new characters, and yeah, while all this was going on, well, Caleb and Eve didn't have much time together, which really sucked for them!
But, oh, that ending! Because she was desperate, and didn't have enough time to really make a plan that had a better chance of succeeding. And what happened because it failed, that Caleb is gone (though he can't really be!) horrible for Eve!
Such a great, epic book, and I just want Rise now, I want to know how it's going to end!
