In the Community, there is no more pain or war. Implanted computer chips have wiped humanity clean of destructive emotions, and thoughts are replaced by a feed from the Link network.
When Zoe starts to malfunction (or "glitch"), she suddenly begins having her own thoughts, feelings, and identity. Any anomalies must be immediately reported and repaired, but Zoe has a secret so dark it will mean certain deactivation if she is caught: her glitches have given her uncontrollable telekinetic powers.
As Zoe struggles to control her abilities and stay hidden, she meets other glitchers including Max, who can disguise his appearance, and Adrien, who has visions of the future. Both boys introduce Zoe to feelings that are entirely new. Together, this growing band of glitchers must find a way to free themselves from the controlling hands of the Community before they’re caught and deactivated, or worse.
My Review:
This is a world that I'd never want to live in. But this book, oh, wow, it's a book that I know I'll reread, because it was really amazing, and extra amazing in that it's a DAC book. I just loved going on this journey with Zoe, Adrien, and Max!
The idea that humans as a group, are prevented by feeling their emotions, even seeing real colour, by chips in their heads, is just a horrible idea. Of course it would occur to an author, whose job is to give us conflict, but that humans do that to others, well, that's just horrible! (Besides the author, of course, because we need conflict in our books!)
The idea of glitchers, well, that's fantastic in this world, that there are people that can rebel, because this is a society that needs some rebelling, for some change for some good! And the powers the glitchers have, that's pretty cool!
Yeah, she got out! At least, kinda! That's a positive, for now, after the disaster that was her first attempt outside. And the disaster that was Max's feelings for her, and what he did because of them! That was not nice!
All in all, a really wonderful book, with a world that I want to spend more time in!
