When beautiful but aloof Claire Harkness is found dead in her dorm room one spring morning, prestigious Armitage Academy is shaken to its core. Everyone connected to school, and to Claire, finds their lives upended, from the local police detective who has a personal history with the academy, to the various faculty and staff whose lives are immersed in the daily rituals associated with it.
Everyone wants to know how Claire died, at whose hands, and more importantly, where the baby that she recently gave birth to is a baby that almost no one, except her small innermost circle, knew she was carrying.
At the center of the investigation is Madeline Christopher, an intern in the English department who is forced to examine the nature of the relationship between the school's students and the adults meant to guide them. As the case unravels, the dark intricacies of adolescent privilege at a powerful institution are exposed, and both teachers and students emerge as suspects as the novel rushes to its thrilling conclusion.
My Review:
This book took me a while to read. It had mostly entertaining parts, but there were parts that dragged, which overall, pulled down the whole book. I did enjoy it, but yeah, it did have it's down moments! But I really liked the mystery!
So Claire was the most important character in this book. She's the murder victim, the one that seems to have had a finger in every pot, and lot of secrets, and this book is about unveiling them-like the pregnancy that almost no one knew about. And yeah, that was really interesting! Oh, and the group, Reign of Terror! They deviated from their original goal, and that kinda sucked for everyone!
There were a lot of fascinating characters, from Madeline, who is similar to Claire in having rich, divorced parents. Then there's Fred, the grandson of a previous headmaster of the school, learning secrets about the man he thought was pretty honourable. And then Matt, a detective working Claire's case, who was a scholarship student there, and was falsely accused of cheating when it was his rich room mate who was. And yeah, the room mate was believed, not him. So yeah, it was fascinating to have all these connections!
Really enjoyed this book, and finding out whodunit, and yeah, pretty great ending!
