Week 39 Review: So Let Them Burn

From Goodreads:
Whip-smart and immersive, this Jamaican-inspired fantasy follows a gods-blessed heroine who's forced to choose between saving her sister or protecting her homeland.

Faron Vincent can channel the power of the gods. Five years ago, she used her divine magic to liberate her island from its enemies, the dragon-riding Langley Empire. But now, at seventeen, Faron is all powered up with no wars to fight. She's a legend to her people and a nuisance to her neighbors.

When she's forced to attend an international peace summit, Faron expects that she will perform tricks like a trained pet and then go home. She doesn't expect her older sister, Elara, forming an unprecedented bond with an enemy dragon—or the gods claiming the only way to break that bond is to kill her sister.

As Faron's desperation to find another solution takes her down a dark path, and Elara discovers the shocking secrets at the heart of the Langley Empire, both must make difficult choices that will shape each other’s lives, as well as the fate of their world.

My Review:
Reading this book was so fantastic! The synopsis sounded so good, and the story proved the potential-I'm just obsessed, I loved these characters, and I hated the situation that they were put into! Learning more about this world and the magic and the politics, I had to know more!

This is the story of two sisters, Faron, who when she was a child, prayed to the gods, and they granted her a link to them, so she could use their power, which she used to free her country from under the thumb of the Langley Empire. But now she's grown, and people don't really see her as a person. She was such a great character, and as the novel tells us at the start, she's a liar, and a good one, which is good, given the pressures that are on her. Oh, and her banter with Reeve, traitor son of the commander of the empire? Yeah, that was so great!

Elara is the older sister, the responsible one, but also who wants to be celebrated for her own merit, not stand in her sister's shadow. That she ends up bonded to a dragon-creatures that come from the empire that had colonized their island home, yeah, it's complicated. That the gods want Faron to kill Elara because of that? Not great.

I really enjoyed getting to know these girls and their story, as two girls who loved each other fiercely. This world of the magic of the gods and of summoning ancestors, a country that they liberated when they were kids, was so interesting, and it definitely raised my emotions, as I rooted for these characters to find the best way out. But as the situation intensified, and new information came to light, well, that ending was evil, and I need to know what's going to happen next!

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait for the sequel!
