Week 44 Review: Zenn Diagram

From Goodreads:
Eva Walker is a seventeen-year-old math genius. And if that doesn't do wonders for her popularity, there's another thing that makes it even worse: when she touches another person or anything that belongs to them — from clothes to textbooks to cell phones — she sees a vision of their emotions. She can read a person's fears and anxieties, their secrets and loves … and what they have yet to learn about calculus. This is helpful for her work as a math tutor, but it means she can never get close to people. Eva avoids touching anyone and everyone. People think it's because she's a clean freak — with the emphasis on freak — but it's all she can do to protect herself from other people's issues.

Then one day a new student walks into Eva's life. His jacket gives off so much emotional trauma that she falls to the floor. Eva is instantly drawn to Zenn, a handsome and soulful artist who also has a troubled home life, and her feelings only grow when she realizes that she can touch Zenn's skin without having visions. But when she discovers the history that links them, the truth threatens to tear the two apart.

My Review:
I enjoyed reading this book! I wasn't sure what it was going to be, what with Eva's ability, but I really enjoyed going on this journey with Eva and Zenn! They both had scars, they both grew up without at least one biological parent. They also are both hard workers, and both pretty smart, and they were a really good couple!

This is a story of these two meeting and falling in love. There were some cute and funny moments, like with the church's van that he painted, some awkward moments like when he met her family. I really enjoyed reading about their journey!

The history that links them, that could tear them apart, yeah, it's personal for both of them. And we slowly get hints of what it is, but when it all comes out, it's still pretty shocking. Given that the reveal is only one sided, it does add complications until they both know. Yeah.

I really enjoyed that ending, with that article about the two of them, and what they were looking forward to in the future, and the story about the money that they'd both turned down, so the other could have it. Yeah. So sweet!

This book was really nice and sweet and I really enjoyed reading it!

Week 23 Review: The Devil's Footprints

From Goodreads:
The footprints were etched in the snow for miles, passing through walls and crossing rivers...appearing on the other side as though no barrier could stop them. In 1922 a farmer in Adamant, Arkansas, awakes to a noise on his roof and finds his snow-blanketed yard marked with thousands of cloven footprints. The prints vanish with the melting snow...only to reappear seventy years later near the gruesome killing of Rachel DeLaune.

Years after her sister's unsolved murder, New Orleans tattoo artist Sarah DeLaune is haunted by the mysteries of her past. Sarah has always believed that her sister was killed by a man named Ashe Cain. But no one else had ever seen Ashe. He had "appeared" to Sarah when she needed a friend the most, only to vanish on the night of her sister's murder. The past bleeds into the present when two mutilated bodies are found near Sarah's home, the crime scene desecrated by cloven footprints.

My Review:
I really enjoyed rereading this book! I kinda remembered what happened, but I wasn't sure how it all worked out, so it was really great to read this book again! It was just so enjoyable, and I'm glad that I did! Just a fantastic read!

The whole premise of the book, the title, the synopsis, the Devil's Footprints, is totally creepy. And with the murders, that just added to the creepy atmosphere, which I delighted in reading! Besides the fact that all the books that I've read written by Amanda Stevens has that atmosphere!

Sarah has had it rough. Her sister was the one her dad liked more, and he was really harsh with Sarah. And when Sarah died...yeah, things got worse. He blamed her, and she kinda blamed herself because of her friend Ashe. And then to have the current murders come up, and it was like they were speaking to her, the tattoos and such, that wasn't good for her!

I really enjoyed the whole process to finding out who the bad guy was! It wasn't as easy as "this guy is the bad guy" because he ad multiple identities, and that confused the matter, but when things were figured out, that was tense, but such a great ending!

I really enjoyed this book, and I need to read more of her books!

Week 9 Review: The Cost of All Things

From Goodreads:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind meets We Were Liars in this thought-provoking and brilliantly written debut that is part love story, part mystery, part high-stakes drama.

What would you pay to cure your heartbreak? Banish your sadness? Transform your looks? The right spell can fix anything…. When Ari's boyfriend Win dies, she gets a spell to erase all memory of him. But spells come at a cost, and this one sets off a chain of events that reveal the hidden—and sometimes dangerous—connections between Ari, her friends, and the boyfriend she can no longer remember.

Told from four different points of view, this original and affecting novel weaves past and present in a suspenseful narrative that unveils the truth behind a terrible tragedy.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! It was strange and different, what with the spells, and how this world worked. There was also the mystery that unfolded as we got these 4 perspectives, and yeah, I just wanted to know what was going to happen!

I enjoyed having these different perspectives. They all added something different to the story. These were different people, and while they were friends, they had secrets, that affected some or all of the others, and I loved connecting all the dots!

It was said that there was a side effect to the spells, and if you had more than one, the side effects would be compounded. Which was something of an issue in this book, because Ari had one back in Boston, and she just got another. But it was more complicated than that!

I just really wanted to know what was going on! I knew something was up, and we were getting clues, but I wasn't sure what. And when things came together, that was a great moment to read! Things made sense! Loved it!

This was a strange and wonderful book and just so great!

Week 52 Review: My Step-Dad's Brother

From Goodreads:
He's a globe-trotting photo-journalist.
And her new step-dad's brother.

She's 18.
He's 30.

We don't really need to say more, right?
Admit it... You're already hooked!

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! It was unexpected and it was just a little bit short, but it was really fantastic to read! I only wish that it'd been longer, so that we could've seen her mom and his brother's reactions to the pregnancy!

I honestly wasn't expecting to read this book! I hadn't heard of it or this author, until I saw it on the 19th, and it looked really good, so I read it, and yeah, it was pretty fantastic! While it won't be for everyone, it is a pretty great book!

This relationship came on pretty quickly! Like, they meet and there's immediately an attraction. And then their respective sides of the wedding party getting married actually do and take off-leaving them behind for them to fall into bed together and planning for the future!

I really enjoyed these two together! She's had to grow up quickly to take care of her absent-minded mom, and he's spent his working life basically traveling the world, which is pretty darned cool! And yeah, they fit, and I really liked watching them together!

Yeah, this book was great, and I need to read a few more Fiona Davenport books!

Week 51 Review: Things I Should Have Known

From Goodreads:
From the author of Epic Fail comes the story of Chloe Mitchell, a Los Angeles girl on a quest to find love for her autistic sister, Ivy. Ethan, from Ivy's class, seems like the perfect match. It's unfortunate that his older brother, David, is one of Chloe's least favorite people, but Chloe can deal, especially when she realizes that David is just as devoted to Ethan as she is to Ivy.

Uncommonly honest and refreshingly funny, this is a story about sisterhood, autism, and first love. Chloe, Ivy, David, and Ethan, who form a quirky and lovable circle, will steal readers' hearts and remind us all that it's okay to be a different kind of normal.

My Review:
I absolutely loved reading this book! Claire LaZebnik's books have been really fantastic, and so was this one! Reading it was an absolute pleasure, and it was something of a learning experience, because it was a great look at autism.

Both Chloe and David were mad at how people reacted when they noticed Ivy or Ethan. And I can understand that, people are awful! But from my side, I would be scared-of upsetting or hurting Ivy or Ethan. I don't do the best socially because of my issues, and I would be afraid for them. Which is my explanation, but it still sucks all around!

Chloe wanted what was best for her sister, setting her up with a support network so that in the future, she could be self-dependent, or at least, more so than she is right now. Of course, she did misread things, and this resulted in something of a catastrophe, but she meant well!

I loved how Ethan and Ivy went on dates, and they had to have their siblings with them! Well, more Ivy than Ethan, especially as time went on, but yeah, it allowed the four of them to start bonding, and that was really great! It was really heart-warming!

This book was an absolute pleasure to read and I loved it!

Week 51 Review: Life by Committee

From Goodreads:
Some secrets are too good to keep.

Tabitha might be the only girl in the history of the world who actually gets less popular when she gets hot. But her so-called friends say she's changed, and they've dropped her flat.

Now Tab has no one to tell about the best and worst thing that has ever happened to her: Joe, who spills his most intimate secrets to her in their nightly online chats. Joe, whose touch is so electric, it makes Tab wonder if she could survive an actual kiss. Joe, who has Tabitha brimming with the restless energy of falling in love. Joe, who is someone else's boyfriend.

Just when Tab is afraid she'll burst from keeping the secret of Joe inside, she finds Life by Committee. The rules of LBC are simple: tell a secret, receive an assignment. Complete the assignment to keep your secret safe.

Tab likes it that the assignments push her to her limits, empowering her to live boldly and go further than she'd ever go on her own.

But in the name of truth and bravery, how far is too far to go?

My Review:
Reading this book was really great! Tab isn't a perfect person, she makes mistakes. But she does learn from them as the book goes on, so that was really great! Really enjoyed watching her go on this journey!

Honestly, the idea of LBC is tempting. To have assignments to make your life better, with the threat of your secrets coming out as incentive to carry out the assignments, sounds pretty good. Well, the first half. But the way that the assignments were created, and the way that the next anything had to be bigger, not cool!

I felt bad for Tabitha that her friends dumped her because she developed and became interested in make up and boys, saying that she changed and not in a good way. Because that's totally not cool! Body changes like this are based on factors out of your control, and make up and boys are fairly healthy interests for high school ladies!

The way that she brought up all of her issues to light, that was really courageous! And what it sparked was really fantastic! That outpouring of people's thoughts and actions that aren't the best parts of them, was just great, a burden lifted and really emotional! It was great!

Yeah, this book was really fantastic and enjoyable!

Week 51 Review: Every Last Word

From Goodreads:
If you could read my mind, you wouldn't be smiling.

Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class. But hidden beneath the straightened hair and expertly applied makeup is a secret that her friends would never understand: Sam has Purely-Obsessional OCD and is consumed by a stream of dark thoughts and worries that she can't turn off.

Second-guessing every move, thought, and word makes daily life a struggle, and it doesn't help that her lifelong friends will turn toxic at the first sign of a wrong outfit, wrong lunch, or wrong crush. Yet Sam knows she'd be truly crazy to leave the protection of the most popular girls in school. So when Sam meets Caroline, she has to keep her new friend with a refreshing sense of humor and no style a secret, right up there with Sam's weekly visits to her psychiatrist.

Caroline introduces Sam to Poet's Corner, a hidden room and a tight-knit group of misfits who have been ignored by the school at large. Sam is drawn to them immediately, especially a guitar-playing guy with a talent for verse, and starts to discover a whole new side of herself. Slowly, she begins to feel more "normal" than she ever has as part of the popular crowd . . . until she finds a new reason to question her sanity and all she holds dear.

My Review:
This book was so great to read! I loved everything about it, it was so freaking great! It does deal with having OCD, which is not pleasant, no matter how much the term is thrown about for basically nothing. This was the real deal, and it wasn't easy to actually live with it.

So Sam was a part of a very popular group of girls, girls that had been friends for like ever, though their number had decreased over time. But they weren't always the nicest people, you know? And they caused a lot of work for her therapist!

I loved when Caroline introduced Sam to the Poet's Corner! That really changed her life, and it was good for her, though there were a few bumps in the road! And a tidbit, is that Tamara Ireland Stone gave Sam coping mechanism of writing from her own life. So yeah, that was cool!

Sam did go through a lot in this book! And yeah, it wasn't easy to deal with, there were some really rough patches! But once she was through, her life was so much better! Not that her life was perfect, but that it was better. And yeah, that was a really great journey to read!

This book was really moving, and I loved reading it!

Week 51 Review: Fragile Line

From Goodreads:
When I'm asleep, I'm afraid someone else might take my place.

It can happen in a flash. One minute she's kissing her boyfriend, the next she's lost in the woods. Sixteen-year-old Ellie Cox is losing time. It started out small…forgetting a drive home or a conversation with a friend. But her blackouts are getting worse, more difficult to disguise as forgetfulness. When Ellie goes missing for three days, waking up in the apartment of a mysterious guy—a guy who is definitely not her boyfriend—her life starts to spiral out of control.

Perched on the edge of insanity, with horrific memories of her childhood leaking in, Ellie struggles to put together the pieces of what she's lost—starting with the name haunting her, Gwen. Heartbreakingly beautiful and intimately drawn, this poignant story follows one girl's harrowing journey to finding out who she really is.

My Review:
Yeah, I really enjoyed reading this book! It was slightly creepy, and I loved the mystery! And it initially felt like it could be a paranormal book, but it wasn't, and that worked! Because that question of what the heck was going on was so compelling to read!

This book had a lot of similarities to The Half Life of Molly Pierce by Katrina Leno, though this book came out about 3 or 4 months before. But I read that one first, so yeah. It's kinda a spoiler for this book if you've read that one, but oh, well, it's been two years since they both came out!

Ellie hasn't had it easy growing up. She was adopted when she was young-but she remembers little from that time. She has scars that she plays with when she's nervous. And then she finds out her parents probably gave her those scars, and that they died in a fire only she survived. Yeah.

I really enjoyed how this story was told. We had Ellie tell her story, and then Gwen, and then the fallout. And yeah, that was really great, because that gave us the mystery and trying to figure it out, and then it explained it, and then got to deal with it! So yeah, that was really great!

Yeah, this was a really fantastic book to read, and I loved it!

Week 51 Review: The Secrets of Lily Graves

From Goodreads:
With the intrigue of Pretty Little Liars and plenty of romance, bestselling author Sarah Strohmeyer weaves a story of secrets and lies—set in a funeral parlor.

Growing up in a house of female morticians, Lily Graves knows all about buried secrets. She knows that perfect senior-class president Erin Donohue isn't what she seems. She knows why Erin's ex-boyfriend, hot football player Matt Houser, broke up with her. And she also knows that, even though she says she and Matt are just friends, there is something brewing between them—something Erin definitely did not like.

But secrets, even ones that are long buried, have a way of returning to haunt their keeper.

So when Erin is found dead the day after attacking Lily in a jealous rage, Lily's and Matt's safe little lives, and the lives of everyone in their town of Potsdam, begin to unravel. And their relationship—which grew from innocent after-school tutoring sessions to late-night clandestine rendezvous—makes them both suspects.

As her world crumbles around her, Lily must figure out the difference between truth and deception, genuine love and a web of lies. And she must do it quickly, before the killer claims another victim.

My Review:
This was a really fantastic book! I loved the mystery, and the romance, and yeah, how everything came together in this book! There were hints of what was going on, but they didn't seem like they were connected. That they were details added to give depth, not details to give depth connected to the mystery! Loved it!

I really enjoyed the way that this story was told! We got the present, with Erin's death, and the investigation into said murder. And then we got the past summer, where Lily was tutoring Matt, and they formed a connection. Of course things weren't as they seemed, and that came out in the present, but yeah, it was awesome to read!

Loved the investigation! There was the whole "Matt lied" thing. And then there was the way that Erin was killed, and that the police considered Lily a suspect. And then there were the hidden, dropped clues, that were just so freaking great!

This book was just really wonderful! I only wish that it was longer, so we could've gotten more story, and to have these characters have a bit more depth. Because yeah, what reader doesn't want a longer book, if the book is good?

Loved reading this book, it was so great, can't wait to read more by Sarah Strohmeyer!

Week 51 Review: Falling into Place

From Goodreads:
On the day Liz Emerson tries to die, they had reviewed Newton's laws of motion in physics class. Then, after school, she put them into practice by running her Mercedes off the road.

Why? Why did Liz Emerson decide that the world would be better off without her? Why did she give up? Vividly told by an unexpected and surprising narrator, this heartbreaking and nonlinear novel pieces together the short and devastating life of Meridian High's most popular junior girl. Mass, acceleration, momentum, force—Liz didn't understand it in physics, and even as her Mercedes hurtles toward the tree, she doesn't understand it now. How do we impact one another? How do our actions reverberate? What does it mean to be a friend? To love someone? To be a daughter? Or a mother? Is life truly more than cause and effect? Amy Zhang's haunting and universal story will appeal to fans of Lauren Oliver, Gayle Forman, and Jay Asher.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! I've been meaning to read it for a while. I think scheduled to read this and her second book last December. Which says something about my reading list psychology when I push down a book, and then it's hard to bring it back up because somehow, my brain thinks because I pushed it down that the book isn't as good. Yeah. It's weird. Here's a post explaining it better!

This story was told from a few perspectives. Of the various people after the "accident." Of the events leading up to Liz deciding to do this which became the minutes leading up to the crash. And some snapshots of when she was a young child. All of which have the strange narrator commenting or looking on. It was pretty strange, but it was a good choice! And they told back and forth, mostly, and there were moments of "ah-ha, that's what happened!" So that was really awesome!

Liz thought that she created so much damage to those around her, that the world didn't deserve her. That kind of thinking is messed up. No matter how bad you are for the people around you, you still deserve to live. (Even in prison. Because life matters.)

I loved how physics was used in this book! Like, the 3 laws of momentum. And how the choices and events that happened in the past led to her present and affect her future. So that was really great! And yeah, with her understanding of the 3 laws, made for a really fantastic ending!

This book was just really great, and was a really fantastic read!

Week 51 Review: Little Peach

From Goodreads:
What do you do if you're in trouble?

When Michelle runs away from her drug-addicted mother, she has just enough money to make it to New York City, where she hopes to move in with a friend. But once she arrives at the bustling Port Authority, she is confronted with the terrifying truth: she is alone and out of options.

Then she meets Devon, a good-looking, well-dressed guy who emerges from the crowd armed with a kind smile, a place for her to stay, and eyes that seem to understand exactly how she feels.

But Devon is not what he seems to be, and soon Michelle finds herself engulfed in the world of child prostitution where he becomes her "Daddy" and she his "Little Peach." It is a world of impossible choices, where the line between love and abuse, captor and savior, is blurred beyond recognition.

This hauntingly vivid story illustrates the human spirit's indomitable search for home, and one girl's struggle to survive.

My Review:
To start off this review, I'll say that this book is fantastic, and it's not going to be for everyone. It's a look at what it's like in the world of child prostitution. Which is something that should never happen, but it does. And for me, it sparked outrage that it actually happens, and that it hasn't been stopped yet!

This book was hard to read! It starts right off with Michelle at the hospital, fearing for her life. Then it flashes back to her childhood, to the point where she's homeless and is picked up by Devon who promises safety and a home and a family. He lied.

Even as she is pulled into this world without really knowing what was going on, she liked parts of it. Like that if she cried out for help with a "trick" then she would be helped. And that her mom's boyfriend couldn't hurt her anymore. But there was the threat of the gang that she worked for. So it was a double edged blade, and the situation quickly deteriorated after one of the girls had a miscarriage.

My rating looks negative on this book. But it's not because I didn't like it! The heart is how much I liked it, the book is how likely I'll be to buy it, and the star is how likely it is that I'll reread it. And since I have a copy of it, I don't need to buy one. And like I said, this was a hard book to read, which is why there's a lower chance that I'll reread it. Yeah.

This book was really fantastic, and a great picture of this situation!

Week 51 Review: How to Win at High School

From Goodreads:
Using Scarface as his guide to life, Adam Higgs is going from zero to high school hero.

Adam Higgs is a loser, and he's not okay with it.

But starting as a junior in a new high school seems like exactly the right time to change things. He brainstorms with his best friend, Brian: What will it take for him to take over Nixon Collegiate?

Adam searches for the A-listers' weak spot and strikes gold when he gets queen bee Sara Bryant to pay him for doing her physics homework. One part nerd, two parts badass, Adam ditches his legit job and turns to full-time cheating. His clients? All the Nixon Collegiate gods and goddesses.

But soon his homework business becomes a booze business, which becomes a fake ID business. Adam's popularity soars as he unlocks high school achievements left and right, from his first kiss to his first rebound hookup. But something else is haunting him—a dark memory from his past, driving him to keep climbing. What is it? And will he go too far?

How to Win at High School's honest portrayal of high school hierarchy is paired with an adrenaline-charged narrative and an over-the-top story line, creating a book that will appeal to guys, girls, and reluctant readers of every stripe. Adam's rocket ride to the top of the social order and subsequent flameout is both emotionally resonant and laugh-out-loud funny.

My Review:
Yeah, this was a really fantastic book! But you know that things aren't going to end well. And by things, I mean his business and popularity. But you know, in the gaining of that, he lost something, that he didn't really regain until everything he was working for came falling down!

So I think that this is Owen Matthews' writing style, since he did it here and in his second book, where there's short chapters to tell the story. Which means a lot of pages. But yeah, it works, and I really enjoy it!

This was a really great look at high school. Those kids, the popular ones, the gods and goddesses, yeah. And the desire to not be a loser, to be one of the popular kids. And you wanted to root for Adam, but knowing that what he was doing was wrong, and it was hurting him!

You could almost call this a warning book, like a guide of what not to do. But it's more than that, which is the almost. Because there's his family, and the warnings, and the beating up. And yeah, it's not a book with the happily ever endings, but one with a solid reasoning and going into life from a better place.

This book was weird and awesome, and I really enjoyed reading it!

Week 50 Review: The Nerdy and the Dirty

From Goodreads:
His classmates may consider him a nerd, but Benedict Pendleton knows he's destined for great things. All he has to do is find a worthy girlfriend, and his social station will be secured. Sure, Benedict is different--but that's what he likes about himself.

Pen Lupo is sick and tired of hiding who she is. On the outside, Pen is popular, quiet, and deferential to her boyfriend. On the inside, however, Pen is honest, opinionated--and not sure that she's quite like other girls. Do they have urges like she does?

When fate intervenes, Pen and Benedict end up at the same vacation resort for winter break. Despite their differences, the two are drawn together. But is there such a thing as happily ever after for this unlikely pair?

My Review:
This book was utterly hilarious! I loved reading about Pen and Benedict, they were real and they were crazy, and they were really fantastic to read about! I really enjoyed their story, there were ups and downs, and it was just fantastic!

These are teenagers. Pen's a popular girl who stays in the shadows-and who doesn't say what's on her mind, and then berates herself over her fakeness. Benedict, whose dad wrote a book on being perfect, and who is really book-intelligent, but has low social intelligence! On appearances, they look like a bad couple, but they absolutely weren't!

Of course, they are teenagers, so sex is big part, talking about it, thinking about it, and everything related to it. And they think that makes them weird. But it's a weird subject, and it seems to be different for everybody, so yeah, really enjoyed their journey!

One awesome thing to note, is the acknowledgements at the end of this book. Because they involved the characters talking to the author, and them writing bits and pieces, and the request to be though of as real, and B.T. Gottfred and us readers were characters and Pen and Benedict and others were writing about us, and about being real. Yeah. Really awesome!

Loved this book, so awesome, and now I really need to read his first book!
