Random Reads #511, September 2nd

Random Reads is a monthly meme (that I'm going to do weekly) hosted by I'm Loving Books to read some books that have been on our TBR piles for a long time. OK, so I got 21 posts in 7 days, which was a pretty fantastic week, I enjoyed lots of great books, and cuddled with my doggies, and yeah, I'm happy with it! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Flesh and Blood, Bad Blood, Out for Blood, Last Blood, Dreamfall, Neverwake, Heretics Anonymous, The Looking Glass, The Other Side of Lost, and These Rebel Waves.

With the Ring of Sorrows still missing, and the covenant between othernaturals and mortals broken, Chrysabelle's life outside the realm of vampire nobility is about to take another downhill slide. Week 31 Review: Sword and Verse

Raisa was just a child when she was sold to work as a slave in the kingdom of Qilara. Despite her young age, her father was teaching her to read and write, grooming her to take his place as a Learned One. In Qilara, the Arnathim, like Raisa, are the lowest class, and literacy is a capital offense. What's more, only the king, prince, tutor, and tutor-in-training are allowed to learn the very highest order language, the language of the gods. So when the tutor-in-training is executed for teaching slaves this sacred language, and Raisa is selected to replace her, Raisa knows any slipup on her part could mean death.

Keeping her secret is hard enough, but the romance that's been growing between her and Prince Mati isn't helping matters. Then Raisa is approached by the Resistance—an underground army of slave rebels—to help liberate Arnath slaves. She wants to free her people, but that would mean aiding a war against Mati. My Review:
I really enjoyed this book! One of the main things that it's about is the power of words. In a world where only the Qilarites should have writing, and only the king, his heir and the royal tutors are allowed to know the higher writing, yeah, words have power in this book!

The lead god dude, yeah, I really hated him. First he raped his sister, and then he was an over all power-hunger and awful dude. What he further did to Sotia, yeah, horrible. But I did enjoy the story of the gods at the beginning of each chapter, that was really great to read!

I don't know how to feel about Raisa and Mati's relationship. On one hand, I don't think he appreciated the danger that she was in. On the other, I don't think I realized just how little power he had. Especially when he was only king for a short while when everything went down!

The beginning was a bit slow, but it set the stage, and then once the middle hit, things were rolling full steam! It made that ending so great, so much happened, so quickly, emotionally between trust and betrayal, and physically with the attack on the place. But that big twist, wow, that was so great!

This book was really fantastic, and I can't wait for the sequel!
