Bout of Books:

OK, so I got 50 posts in 7 days, and I got a bit behind, finishing up this post about 3 days after it posted. Opps. But I read some really great books, and I have some really great ones coming this week that I can't wait to read! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read The Betrayed and Grace and Glory

Kiera Cass brings another sparkling romance to a stunning conclusion in this sequel to the instant #1 New York Times bestseller The Betrothed.

Can you follow your heart when it's already broken?

After fleeing Coroa and leaving the memory of her beloved Silas behind, Hollis is unsteadily adjusting to life in Isolte. The Eastoffe family's affection is a balm on her weary spirit, though Etan, a surly cousin with a deep distaste for Coroans, threatens to upset the uneasy peace she's found.

While tensions at home ratchet up, disquiet in the kingdom of Isolte is reaching a fever pitch. The Eastoffes may have the power to unseat a tyrannical king—but only with Hollis's help.

Can a girl who's lost it all put the fate of her adopted homeland over the secret longings of her heart?
Danger, betrayal, and enticing forbidden love clash in book three of #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout's Harbinger trilogy!

When Angels Fall

Trinity Marrow has lost the battle and her beloved Protector. Even with both demons and Wardens on her side, Trin may not win the war against the Harbinger.

Bringing Lucifer back to the world to fight the Harbinger is probably a really, really bad idea, but they're out of options—and the world’s ultimate fallen angel is the only being powerful enough to impact the outcome.

As Trin and Zayne form a new and more dangerous bond and Lucifer unleashes Hell on earth, the apocalypse looms and the world teeters on the end of forever. Win or lose, one thing is certain—nothing will ever be the same.

Week 19 Review: A Summoning of Souls

At the dawn of the twentieth century, New York City houses both the living and the dead. And when it comes to crimes of an otherworldly nature, it falls to the psychics and spirits of the city's finest secret agency—The Ghost Precinct—to serve justice beyond the earthly realm . . .

The ethereal denizens of New York owe a great debt to Eve Whitby, the young talented medium who leads the all-female spiritualists in the police department's Ghost Precinct. Without her team's efforts on behalf of the incorporeal, many souls would have been lost or damned by both human and inhuman means.

But now Eve faces an enemy determined to exorcise the city's ghostly population once and for all. Albert Prenze is supposed to be dead. Instead he is very much alive, having assumed the identity of his twin brother Alfred, and taken control of the family's dubiously made fortune. With unlimited wealth at his disposal, Albert uses experimental technology to banish ghosts to an eternal darkness forever.

To achieve his vicious ends, Albert plots to manipulate Eve and twist her abilities into a psychic weapon—a weapon that not only poses a threat to spirits but to everyone she cares for, including her beloved Detective Horowitz . . .

My Review:
Oh, man, this was an excellent to this series! I'm sad to say goodbye to these characters-or at least, of Eve narrating, but yeah, I had a great time reading this book! Loved how everything wrapped up and it was an amazing read!

I love Eve and the rest of the Ghost Precinct members! I adore how close they are, how tight their friendships are, and how well they work together. It's all just so great to read about, and they're all such great characters!

There is still a bit of a slow burn romance with Detective Horowitz, but there are rightfully developments, and they were so sweet to read, and have me picturing a pretty bright future for them. And I'm glad, after what they've been through, they deserve it!

Loved how everything wrapped up with the bad guy! He caused so much damage, and deserved to be taken down, so that was really enjoyable! Yeah, all in all, that ending was really satisfying, and I really enjoyed how everything turned out!

I had such a blast reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by Leanna Renee Hieber!

OK, so I got 63 posts in 7 days, I read a good deal, and had a good chunk of free time, so got a lot of blogging done as well, so it was a really great week! And Dobby is doing well, and he gets his stitches out on the 2nd, so I'm very happy with that! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Emerald Blaze, The Mysterious Study of Doctor Sex, Harrow the Ninth, The Inheritance Games, No Offense, Vicious, and You.

As Prime magic users, Catalina Baylor and her sisters have extraordinary powers—powers their ruthless grandmother would love to control. Catalina can earn her family some protection working as deputy to the Warden of Texas, overseeing breaches of magic law in the state, but that has risks as well. When House Baylor is under attack and monsters haunt her every step, Catalina is forced to rely on handsome, dangerous Alessandro Sagredo, the Prime who crushed her heart.

The nightmare that Alessandro has fought since childhood has come roaring back to life, but now Catalina is under threat. Not even his lifelong quest for revenge will stop him from keeping her safe, even if every battle could be his last. Because Catalina won't rest until she stops the use of the illicit, power-granting serum that's tearing their world apart.
Each of the Empire's houses keeps secrets, even from themselves. For the bookish academics of the Sixth, every secret is a mystery, and every mystery is a puzzle to be solved or a paper to be published. Deep in the bowels of their house, one such secret is about to reveal itself. The study of the famed academic Donald Sex, sealed since the moment of his death, is about to open, and archivists are ready to dissect what he left behind. They are not ready for the macabre surprise that awaits them.

Enter Palamedes Sextus and Camilla Hect, age thirteen.
Harrow the Ninth, the sequel to the sensational, USA today best-selling novel Gideon the Ninth, turns a galaxy inside out as one necromancer struggles to survive the wreckage of herself aboard the Emperor's haunted space station.

She answered the Emperor's call.

She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend.

In victory, her world has turned to ash.

After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem. Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the Emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman's shoulders.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her Emperor to fight an unwinnable war. Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath — but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her.

Sealed in the gothic gloom of the Emperor's Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?
A Cinderella story with deadly stakes and thrilling twists, perfect for fans of One of Us is Lying and Knives Out.

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why--or even who Tobias Hawthorne is. To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch--and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes.

Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.
New York Times -bestselling author Meg Cabot's returns with a charming romance between a children's librarian and the town sheriff in the second book in the Little Bridge Island series.

Welcome to Little Bridge, one of the smallest, most beautiful islands in the Florida Keys, home to sandy white beaches, salt-rimmed margaritas, and stunning sunsets—a place where nothing goes under the radar and love has a way of sneaking up when least expected...

A broken engagement only gave Molly Montgomery additional incentive to follow her dream job from the Colorado Rockies to the Florida Keys. Now, as Little Bridge Island Public Library's head of children’s services, Molly hopes the messiest thing in her life will be her sticky-note covered desk. But fate—in the form of a newborn left in the restroom—has other ideas. So does the sheriff who comes to investigate the "abandonment".  When John Hartwell folds all six-feet-three of himself into a tiny chair and insists that whoever left the baby is a criminal, Molly begs to differ and asks what he's doing about the Island's real crime wave (if thefts of items from homes that have been left unlocked could be called that). Not the best of starts, but the man's arrogance is almost as distracting as his blue eyes. Almost…

John would be pretty irritated if one of his deputies had a desk as disorderly as Molly's. Good thing she doesn't work for him, considering how attracted he is to her. Molly's lilting librarian voice makes even the saltiest remarks go down sweeter, which is bad as long as she's a witness but might be good once the case is solved—provided he hasn’t gotten on her last nerve by then. Recently divorced, John has been having trouble adjusting to single life as well as single parenthood. But something in Molly's beautiful smile gives John hope that his old life on Little Bridge might suddenly hold new promise—if only they can get over their differences.

Clever, hilarious, and fun, No Offense will tug at readers' heartstrings and make them fall in love with Little Bridge Island and its unique characters once again.
A masterful, twisted tale of ambition, jealousy, betrayal, and superpowers, set in a near-future world.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn't automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.
When a beautiful aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.

There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she'll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a "chance" meeting.

As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck's life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck's perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.

A terrifying exploration of how vulnerable we all are to stalking and manipulation, debut author Caroline Kepnes delivers a razor-sharp novel for our hyper-connected digital age.

Week 35 Reviews: A Sanctuary of Spirits

From Goodreads:
As the twentieth century approaches, New York's Ghost Precinct crosses a threshold into the land of the dead in this paranormal gaslamp mystery.

New York City, 1899. The NYPD's Ghost Precinct, an all-female team of psychics and spiritualists led by gifted young medium Eve Whitby, is unconventional to say the least. And now they're stepping even further outside the bounds of normal police work--into an otherworldly realm known as the Ghost Sanctuary. It's a place where the dead can provide answers. But will Eve and her colleagues pay a price for venturing beyond the land of the living?

Investigating a mortician's sudden disappearance, Eve encounters a charismatic magician and mesmerist whose abilities are unlike any she's seen before. Is he connected to the mysterious deaths around the city--or a link to the Ghost Sanctuary? Torn between the bonds of her team and her growing relationship with the dashing Detective Horowitz, Eve must discern truth from illusion and friend from foe before another soul vanishes into the ether.

My Review:
This book was another fantastic read in this series! I enjoyed spending more time with these characters, getting deeper into the mystery with the Undertaker and the Prenze family. Plus there's the Sanctuary of Spirits, which I enjoyed learning about!

I learned in time time that I was reading this book, that there's another series connected to this world, the Eterna Files, which I haven't read. So I'm probably going to be reading those two series soon, though I'm not sure if it'll be before or after reading A Summoning of Souls. But this fact, now it makes sense, the comments Natalie made of Jonathon being dragged into the supernatural business when Eve was a child!

There were two parts of this book. The main part was the investigation into the undertaker, the one who had the pack of ghost kids clamoring for attention. I didn't expect it to go where it did, that was pretty horrific! And the minor part was Eve's relationship with Detective Horowitz, which was pretty full of misunderstandings. Really enjoyed how it worked out!

That ending though! We knew some of it, that the one brother was still alive. But I didn't expect how it would play out, and while I'm not quite sure of how it worked out, well, I can't wait to find out, and have this bad guy taken down!

Loved this book, and I'm so excited to see how it all ends in the final book!

Teaser Tuesday #489, August 25th

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Ambrosia of The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Today's teaser comes from A Sanctuary of Spirits by Leanna Renee Hieber, page 11.

"That he could slightly see and barely hear fragments from Maggie was incredible progress. Just weeks before he'd been a confirmed skeptic."

Yeah, sounds like a good thing, given that this is a world with ghosts in them, so not being a skeptic means being more open to the world! Must read more! What about you guys? Happy reading!

OK, so I got 63 posts in 7 days, it was a pretty great week, I read a good number of books and I really enjoyed them! Plus Dobby is healing well from surgery, and I've had him the past couple of nights, because when he was by himself, he was waking up the parents up at 5 because he was lonely. But with me, he's getting up around 7 or 8. I love cuddling with him, but the cone of shame, not so much! And poor Jax, because now he's by himself. Can't wait for the 2nd when he gets his stitches out! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read the last few books left on my N.E.W.T.'s TBR!

Week 34 Review: The Spectral City

From Goodreads:
Solving crime isn't only for the living.

In turn-of-the century New York City, the police have an off-the-books spiritual go-to when it comes to solving puzzling corporeal crimes . . .

Her name is Eve Whitby, gifted medium and spearhead of The Ghost Precinct. When most women are traveling in a gilded society that promises only well-appointed marriage, the confident nineteen-year-old Eve navigates a social circle that carries a different kind of chill. Working with the diligent but skeptical Lieutenant Horowitz, as well as a group of fellow psychics and wayward ghosts, Eve holds her own against detractors and threats to solve New York's most disturbing crimes as only a medium of her ability can.

But as accustomed as Eve is to ghastly crimes and all matters of the uncanny, even she is unsettled by her department's latest mystery. Her ghostly conduits are starting to disappear one by one as though snatched away by some evil force determined to upset the balance between two realms, and most important—destroy the Ghost Precinct forever. Now Eve must brave the darkness to find the vanished souls. She has no choice. It's her job to make sure no one is ever left for dead.

My Review:
I had a great time reading this book! I enjoyed being in this world again, and it's about the kind of the characters of another series, so we did get to see them again. It was a bit bittersweet, because while they have a loving relationship, her parents are scarred from what happened then.

I found out while I was getting ready to read this book, that there was a series between the one about her parents, and this one. And I wish I'd reread her parent's series and read that series, because it's all in the same world. I don't think I'm missing any plot points, but it's not quite as rich as it could've been. Oh, well.

I really enjoyed getting to know Eve and her struggles. Being female and trying to use her abilities to help solve crime, it's an uphill battle. And now that she has her  Ghost Precinct, well, opposing forces are trying to take it away, so she has a lot to deal with. But she does have her fellow members, I loved the group that has formed around her, and I can't wait to get to know them more in the future!

The mystery that was introduced in the beginning with the ghost trying to bring attention to the photos wasn't resolved in this book, which makes it look like that's going to be a big part of the series story plotline, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here!

This was a really great read, and I can't wait to read more!
