Clean Sweep ARC Challenge Update 40 and Wrap Up

Ok, so I read Of Silver and Shadows! And that was my last read of this month, for this challenge. And since my goal was 25 books, well, I made that goal, so I'm really pleased with how much I read, and while I still have over 100 ARC's to read, well, there's ARC August, and I'm debating to myself doing another month of ARC reading in November, maybe. Like, Next to Be Published November. Can't wait for August for a month of ARC reading!

Wrote that Review Update #303, May 31st

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!
If you want to participate, set a certain amount of reviews to write, and once you make that goal, you can get a reward!

My reviews to reward is writing all of the reviews of the week, and I motivated myself to write my review for Every Step She Takes, The Beholder and The Boundless, Seeing Darkness and
Deadly Touch, The Light Between Worlds, Alien Secrets, Something to Talk About, so I have 6 of 6 reviews written!

And as always, I want to review this week's reviews!

What about you guys? Happy reading!

How Well I Stuck to It #306, May 31st

So I decided that I should have accountability on sticking to what should be in a week, so I'm doing How Well I Stuck to It every Sunday, because my schedule should be fixed in by now!

Week 23:
My Calamity Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows, The Persuasion by Iris Johansen, Shadows & Surrender by Deborah Wilde

Tour Books: NA.

Review Books: NA.

NetGalley: NA.

Old NetGalley: NA.

Edelweiss: NA.

Old Edelweiss: NA.

Rereads: NA.

New Books: 3. Check.

I have a few other books that I want to read, but I've already made review posts for them, so just the new books this week, and there's only 3, so I should be able to read all of them this week!

Week 22:
Nothing Planned!

vs.

Every Step She Takes by Kelley Armstrong, The Beholder by Anna Bright, The Boundless by Anna Bright, Seeing Darkness by Heather Graham, Deadly Touch by Heather Graham, The Light Between Worlds by Laura E. Weymouth, Alien Secrets by Ian Douglas, Something to Talk About by Meryl Wilsner

Yeah, I had a free week, so that I read 8 books, I'm happy with that! Can't wait for next week!

Wheel of TBR #1, May 31st

I saw Codie's Book Corner doing the Wheel of TBR, and I thought that sounded like a great way to pick what to read from your TBR, so I'm going to try it out. So thanks to her!

Using a Wheel Picker, I'll have 7 spins each week. I'll fiddle around with how I'm going to do this, since I'll be using an online wheel. Once a prompt is used, I'll change it out using a random generator. If there's more than 2 books that I haven't read in that week, then I'll have to unhaul at least one of them, which is kinda scary since I've never really unhauled books before. Though I think I need to unhaul my Goodreads Want to Read shelf. Codie had if you hit a colour 3 times, then you'd add an extra spin, but the wheels I found only had up to 8 colours, so at the end of each month, if a colour comes up more then 4 times, then I'll add an extra spin for the next month. I'd already done this week what I wanted to read, but I manged to use 2/3 of those books, so I'm happy there!

The Reward Challenge Update #454, May 31st

The Reward Challenge is almost the complete opposite to a book buying ban as you'll end up buying lots of new books throughout the challenge but only after you've completed a certain amount of reading. It was hosted by Good Golly Miss Holly, so thanks to her for starting it!

OK, so I read Every Step She Takes which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, SAC 2020 Book and a WoW Book, The Beholder which counts 5 times as a DAC Book, Edelweiss Book, Historical Fiction 2020 Book and a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book, The Boundless which counts 7 times as a Edelweiss Book, End of Series 2020 Book, Historical Fiction 2020 Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book, Sophomore Challenge Book and WoW Book, Seeing Darkness which counts 4 times as a Edelweiss Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book and WoW Book, Deadly Touch which counts 4 times as a Edelweiss Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book and WoW Book, The Light Between Worlds which counts 4 times as a DAC Book, Edelweiss Book and a SAC 2020 Book, Alien Secrets which counts 4 times as a Edelweiss Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2020 Book and a WoW Book, Something to Talk About which counts 4 times as a DAC Book, NetGalley Book and a SAC 2020 Book.

So I have 36 counts which translates to $18 this week! I'll use it to buy books!

Week 22 Review: Something to Talk About

From Goodreads:
A showrunner and her assistant give the world something to talk about when they accidentally fuel a ridiculous rumor in this debut romance.

Hollywood powerhouse Jo is photographed making her assistant Emma laugh on the red carpet, and just like that, the tabloids declare them a couple. The so-called scandal couldn't come at a worse time—threatening Emma's promotion and Jo's new movie.

As the gossip spreads, it starts to affect all areas of their lives. Paparazzi are following them outside the office, coworkers are treating them differently, and a "source" is feeding information to the media. But their only comment is "no comment".

With the launch of Jo's film project fast approaching, the two women begin to spend even more time together, getting along famously. Emma seems to have a sixth sense for knowing what Jo needs. And Jo, known for being aloof and outwardly cold, opens up to Emma in a way neither of them expects. They begin to realize the rumor might not be so off base after all…but is acting on the spark between them worth fanning the gossip flames?

My Review:
This book was a wonderful read! I heard that this is Berkley's first F/F romance novel, and I was really excited to read it! And it was so easy and short to read, and I just devoured it, it was a really great story and so entertaining to read!

This book deals with one major issue, sexual harassment in Hollywood. It mentions the lack of diversity as well, which is a small part of a bigger problem, but it's an underpinning part of the book, that Jo is Asian, not a active part of the book, like the situation that Emma has to deal with.

I just really enjoyed their relationship, they worked well together, boss and assistant, and that showed in the picture that made people think that they were dating. I was so glad that it didn't show people looking down on them for their supposed romantic relationship. They had to deal with other issues.

Like the fact that people think Emma was sleeping with her boss to get her job. And the complexities of the fact that Emma does work for Jo. And the misunderstandings! Oh, man, the misunderstandings! I loved all the emotional drama, especially since it ultimately ends with a happy ending!

This book was so cute and precious and amazing to read, and I really enjoyed it!

Week 22 Review: Alien Secrets

From Goodreads:
In the first novel in New York Times bestselling author Ian Douglas' Solar Warden series, government conspiracy theories, UFO history, and thrilling space combat come together in an unforgettable interstellar military science fiction adventure.

THE TRUTH HAS ALWAYS BEEN HERE

In the final days of World War II, the Allies ransacked Berlin. Third Reich scientists were highly sought- out prizes for Americans and Russians desperate to possess the Nazi knowledge of nuclear firepower. But they failed to capture one of the most vital members of Adolf Hitler's inner circle: SS Obergruppenfuhrer Hans Kammler. One of the engineers of Auschwitz, Kammler was also a liaison with the Nazis' silent partners whose technological wonders nearly helped the Axis win the war—the alien species the Germans called the Eidechse.

More than seven decades later, U. S. Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander Mark Hunter has witnessed the impossible. On a mission in North Korea, an unidentified flying object destroyed a compound developing weapons of mass destruction. Now, he has been recruited to join a government agency that has been harboring a secret alliance with extraterrestrials since 1947. Selected to lead an elite force of soldiers, Hunter will travel across the stars to help humanity stake its claim among greater intelligent life in the universe.

But the aliens who have infiltrated Earth and guided war mongering nations since the twentieth century have their own agendas…

My Review:
Wow, this book was really great! It was a little confusing at times, because of all of the military jargon and acronyms. They were explained, but there were so many to keep track of. Plus there were a few side characters who we'd see in a scene without the main character, to add to the story, and it was hard to keep track of everything. But getting past those hurdles, this was a really excellent read!

The way this book was written was interesting. We'd start the chapter off with an important part of Human-Alien history. There were a lot of presidents! Sometimes we'd get a scene or two with a side character, not always the same one. And then we had the main story of Hunter, thrust into this world, and the adventures he has.

Yeah, this book is sci fi as heck! Aliens, space-time, oh, my! I don't know much about alien conspiracy theories, but the way they play out here, the mix of truth and fiction, was interesting to read. And the facts of these aliens were pretty intriguing, and I can't wait to read more!

I'm really excited to see where this book will go, there's a lot of opportunities, and so many places that this series could explore, and we had a really great ride in this book, and I can't wait to see where we go in the future!

This book was a really great read, and I can't wait for more of this series!

Week 22 Review: The Light Between Worlds

From Goodreads:
Five years ago, Evelyn and Philippa Hapwell cowered from air strikes in a London bomb shelter. But that night took a turn when the sisters were transported to another realm called the Woodlands. In a forest kingdom populated by creatures out of myth and legend, they found temporary refuge.

When they finally returned to London, nothing had changed at all—nothing, except themselves.

Now, Ev spends her days sneaking into the woods outside her boarding school, wishing for the Woodlands. Overcome with longing, she is desperate to return no matter what it takes.

Philippa, on the other hand, is determined to find a place in this world. She shields herself behind a flawless exterior and countless friends, and moves to America to escape the memory of what was.

But when Evelyn goes missing, Philippa must confront the depth of her sister's despair and the painful truths they've been running from. As the weeks unfold, Philippa wonders if Ev truly did find a way home, or if the weight of their worlds pulled her under.

My Review:
This book was a really great read, of finding a place where you belong, and wanting to get back to it. And it's very reminiscent of the story Prince Caspian, of the characters having been to a different world, lived years there, and returned right back to when and where they left. Well, the untold story between The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian, because they're in England, and Ev wants to go back.

The way this was told was really great. We got the present of Ev, struggling to live the life that doesn't fit her anymore, she has a Woodlands heart, she doesn't belong in our world anymore. And we got the past, of her going to Woodlands, and her adventure there.

Then we got to be in Philippa's head, in the present, and then in all sorts of moments, after they came back to our world, and some moments from the Woodlands. It was really great to see the differences between the two sisters!

This book isn't an action packed romp. Sure, there's the war the Woodlands were fighting. Instead, this book was about finding that place you belong, dealing with the issues of having lived in another world for a while. It was introspective, and I enjoyed it, though it's not usually my thing.

This was a really wonderful read, and I really enjoyed it!

Week 22 Reviews: Seeing Darkness, Deadly Touch

From Goodreads:
She's being murdered.

It was supposed to be a fun girls' weekend in Salem, but when a past-life regression session instead sends a terrifying vision of murder to Kylie Connelly, she's shaken and doesn’t know what to think. Worse, later she identifies the attacker from her vision: he's a prominent local politician.

Special Agent Jon Dickson of the FBI's Krewe of Hunters is on the trail of a suspected serial killer based on the scantest of clues and unreliable witness testimony. When he realizes Kylie's vision might be his best lead, he must gain her trust and get close enough to guide her new talent. Though she doubts herself, the danger Kylie sees is all too real—and the pair will have to navigate a murderer's twisted passions and deceptions to stop the killer from claiming another victim.

From Goodreads:
SHE KNOWS WHERE TO FIND THE BODY

When Raina Hamish tries on a dress in a Miami boutique, she has a terrifyingly accurate vision of a murdered corpse in the murky shadows of the Everglades. She wants to help, but who would believe her when she can hardly believe herself?

Special Agent Axel Tiger has returned to Florida to help hunt a serial killer, but the investigation doesn't have much to go on. Raina's vision is their best chance to uncover more. Axel's experience with the FBI's elite paranormal team will nurture Raina's abilities, and she may be able to help save a life—but it puts her directly in the crosshairs of a killer who is closer than they would ever suspect.

My Review:
It was really great to read these books! I do kinda miss the original style of the original books, where there was a team all together, instead of one of the main characters, sometimes both, with some in person backup by another member of the Krewe and significant other, and Angela and the team of researchers back in Virginia. Just a little bit lonely, you know? We haven't seen some of the cast in a while, and it'd be a way to introduce these leads before they're leads. I liked getting to know all of them before their stories.

These books both were pretty unique, though. Since Kylie was having her past regressed, it was like she was the person getting murdered, at the time it was happening, which seemed to unlock her ability to see ghosts. And Raina touched an item that the victim wore, and suddenly she saw where the victim was, saw the past. So that was interesting to read!

Both of these mysteries was intriguing to read, of a serial killer-or a copy cat. But because of Kylie, they knew who the bad guy was, it was more of a matter of finding evidence that would hold up in court. And the cold blooded executions spanning years, with bodies dumped in the Everglades, both of these mysteries were great and I really enjoyed how they all played out!

Of course there was romance in both of these books. I really enjoyed Kylie and Jon together, and Raina and Axel. And their differing stories, that Jon was just in the right place at the right time after Kylie put the pieces together. That Raina and Axel met when they were kids, on a school trip. Yeah for happy endings!

Really enjoyed these books, they were really entertaining to read!

Week 22 Reviews: The Beholder, The Boundless

From Goodreads:
Selah has waited her whole life for a happily ever after. As the only daughter of the leader of Potomac, she knows her duty is to find the perfect match.

But after an excruciatingly public rejection, Selah's stepmother suggests an unthinkable solution: Selah must set sail across the Atlantic to visit a series of potential suitors—and if she doesn't come home engaged, she shouldn't come home at all.

From the gardens of England to the fjords of Norge, Selah's quest will be the journey of a lifetime. But her stepmother's schemes aren't the only secrets hiding belowdecks…and the stakes of her voyage may be higher than any happy ending.

Lush landscapes, dazzling romance, and captivating intrigue await in this stunning alternate historical YA debut—perfect for fans of The Selection or Caraval.

From Goodreads:
This breathtaking sequel to The Beholder will take you on a journey into a darkly sparkling fairy tale, perfect for fans of The Selection and Caraval.

When Selah found true love with Prince Torden of Norway, she never imagined she'd have to leave him behind. All because the Beholder's true mission was a secret Selah's crew didn't trust her to keep: transporting weapons to the rebels fighting against the brutal tsarytsya, whose shadow looms over their next port of Shvartsval'd. A place Selah hoped she'd never go.

But gone is the girl who departed Potomac filled with fear. With a stockpile of weapons belowdecks and her heart hanging in the balance, Selah is determined to see the Beholder's quest to its end.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading these books! I felt bad for Selah, being told to venture into the world to find a spouse, that if she failed, she wouldn't be welcomed back. And she was the Seneschal-Elect, meaning she was their next leader. Urgh, politics!

This was an interesting world, an alt-history in which the revolution against England's empire wasn't what became the USA, but another country. So that was really interesting, and it set up this world and the threats that were looming, like the Tsarytsya. I think this would be the equivalent of the 18th or 19th centuries in our time, they had radio, and they had guns, but they also had monarchies and such, but that could be because of the different history then us.

This is a story told in parts, the parts broken up into where she was at the time. So basically 4 parts, England, Norge, Shvartsval'd, and the mystery of the 4th place. We watch Selah learn and grow, from her mistakes in England to her happiness in Norge. I really enjoyed watching her journey!

The second book was less about the romance, and more about the politics. Because of the choice to help the rebels, and all the entanglements there. Selah has to sharpen her claws, become a wolf, which is kinda important to the story. I really enjoyed it all and how well it wrapped up!

These books were really great to read, I really enjoyed them!

Week 22 Review: Every Step She Takes

From Goodreads:
A gripping new thriller by the author of the instant bestseller Wherever She Goes.

Sometimes there's no use running from your past. . . .

Genevieve has secrets that no one knows. In Rome she can be whoever she wants to be. Her neighbours aren't nosy; her Italian is passable; the shopkeepers and restaurant owners now see her as a local, and they let her be. It's exactly what she wants.

One morning, after getting groceries, she returns to her 500-year-old Trastevere apartment. She climbs to the very top of the staircase, the stairs narrowing the higher she goes. When she gets to her door, she puts down her bags and pushes the key into the lock . . .

. . . and the door swings open.

It's unlocked. Sometimes she doesn't lock it because break-ins aren't common in Rome. But Genevieve knows she locked the door behind her this morning. She has no doubt.

She should leave, call the police. What if someone is in her apartment, waiting for her? But she doesn't.

The apartment is empty, and exactly as she left it, perfectly tidy and not a thing out of place . . . except for the small box on her kitchen table. A box that definitely wasn't there this morning. A box postmarked from the US. A box that is addressed to "Lucy Callahan."

A name that she hasn't used in ten years.

Edge-of-your-seat riveting, K.L. Armstrong's new book will keep you turning the pages until the very end.

My Review:
Man, this was a fantastic book! I just love Kelley Armstrong's writing, and the story was just so enticing! I just couldn't wait to dive into this story, of Genevieve, and why she hasn't used the name Lucy in 10 years. I just had to read it!

One thing that I really enjoy about her writing is that the characters are smart, they have common sense, and they're practical. As in, when there's something wrong, they're not going to be idiots about it and make things worse. They might make mistakes, but they're human. I just love this quality!

The way this story was told-back and forth between the present with Genevieve getting a package addressed to her old name onward, and the past, the reason why she hasn't used that name in 10 years The way things were intertwined was fantastic to read!

This was a bit of a mystery thriller, at least the present was. And on multiple levels, I really enjoyed that one twist with who the one guy was. And that ending, oh, that was clever! The whole thing was just a little sad, that everything happened, but it was a really satisfying ending!

Loved reading this book, it was amazing, and I'm really glad that it's the book I chose to read on my birthday!

Book Blogger Hop #138, May 29th

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer's permission, I relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013. Check out the hop here

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop's purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

The Question of the week is: What social media sites do you visit? Please leave your links so we can follow. (submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver's Reviews)

I visit Youtube and don't post videos, and have links to follow with Facebook and Twitter, though I don't visit it all that often. What about you guys? Happy reading!

First Lines Friday #472, May 29th

First Lines Friday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie of Precision Reviews. We encourage all of our fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

-Grab your current read(s)
-Share the first line(s)
-Include the title and author so that other FLF participants can add the book to their TBR Lists!

"Jo Jones in the running for Silver gig, the headline on the screen said. Right beneath that, in italics, it read, But should she be?" -Something to Talk About by Meryl Wilsner

Well, that doesn't sound good, sounds a bit negative. Must read more! What about you guys? Happy reading!

I read my first book, Deadly Touch, and I'm going to be reading The Light Between Worlds next! Well, I had a late start, I tried finishing a book last night, but it didn't work out. But since my work schedule for tomorrow changed, well, I'm going to make this a 2 day thing, reading the rest of today, and all of tomorrow after work. But the next update should be soon, since I've been reading The Light Between Worlds a bit, and I'm already halfway done, so that'll be soon!
