Waiting on Wednesday #618, March 15th

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

Both Feet in the Grave by Jeaniene Frost
Expected Publication: April 18th, 2023
From Goodreads:
If you thought you learned more about the dangerous and sexy alpha vampire, Bones, in The Other Half of the Grave, you haven't seen anything yet...

Cat disappeared from Bones’ life to protect him, but this Master vampire will keep his promise to find her.

Two hundred years of bounty hunting made Bones the best at what he does, yet it's still taken him four long years to find Cat, the half vampire now known as the "Red Reaper." There's a price on Cat's head, and not even her job as a secret government agent can save her. Only Bones can. But has time hardened Bones too much to love again? Or will his passion for Cat burn through every obstacle—alive, undead, or otherwise—between them?

The Song of Wrath by Sarah Raughley
Expected Publication: April 18th, 2023
From Goodreads:
Penny Dreadful meets The Gilded Wolves in this captivating sequel to young adult historical fantasy The Bones of Ruin that follows immortal Iris as she desperately tries to thwart her destructive destiny.

Iris Marlow can’t die. For years, she was tormented by her missing memories and desperate to learn her real identity. So when the mysterious Adam Temple offered to reveal the truth of who she was in exchange for her joining his team in the Tournament of Freaks, a gruesome magical competition, it was an offer she couldn’t refuse. But the truth would have been better left buried.

Because Adam is a member of the Enlightenment Committee, an elite secret society built upon one fundamental idea: that the apocalypse known as Hiva had destroyed the world before and would do it again, and soon. But what the Committee—and Iris—never guessed is that Hiva is not an event. Hiva is a person—Iris.

Now, no matter how hard Iris fights for a normal life, the newly awakened power inside her keeps drawing her toward the path of global annihilation. Adam, perversely obsessed with Iris, will stop at nothing to force her to unlock her true potential, while a terrifying newcomer with ties to Hiva’s past is on the hunt for Iris.

All Iris wants is the freedom to choose her own future, but the cost might be everything Iris holds dear—including the world itself.

From the Grave by Kresley Cole
Expected Publication: April 18th, 2023
From Goodreads:
The final breathtaking installment of the New York Times bestselling Arcana Chronicles Series by Kresley Cole. . . .

To defeat the Emperor and Fortune, Evie, the great Empress of Arcana, has united with a sea witch, a band of roving warriors, and more than a couple of rogues. But can her unusual alliance defeat an unimaginable evil? Or will blood and hellfire reign on earth forever? May the best hand win. . . .

Pieces of Me by Kate McLaughlin
Expected Publication: April 18th, 2023
From Goodreads:
The next gut-punching, compulsively readable Kate McLaughlin novel, about a girl finding strength in not being alone.

When eighteen-year-old Dylan wakes up, she’s in an apartment she doesn’t recognize. The other people there seem to know her, but she doesn't know them – not even the pretty, chiseled boy who tells her his name is Connor. A voice inside her head keeps saying that everything is okay, but Dylan can’t help but freak out. Especially when she borrows Connor’s phone to call home and realizes she’s been missing for three days.

Dylan has lost time before, but never like this.

Soon after, Dylan is diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder, and must grapple not only with the many people currently crammed inside her head, but that a secret from her past so terrible she’s blocked it out has put them there. Her only distraction is a budding new relationship with Connor. But as she gets closer to finding out the truth, Dylan wonders: will it heal her or fracture her further?

Bewitched by Laura Thalassa
Expected Publication: April 18th, 2023
From Goodreads:
Come to me, Empress …

It was supposed to be a simple magic quest, one that would get a witch like me accepted into Henbane Coven. I was never supposed to survive a plane crash, nor was I supposed to discover an ancient tomb and the beautiful, sleeping man trapped inside it.

I knew you would come, my queen. I knew it wasn’t true. It couldn’t be. A love like ours defies everything. I am yours forever …

I definitely wasn’t supposed to wake Memnon the Cursed.
I probably shouldn’t have kissed him either.
Oops.

You were my everything, and you betrayed me …

Now I fear I’ve unleashed an ancient evil on the world, one who has set his wicked sights on me. And despite his good looks and the beguiling pull of his magic, this terrifying, supernatural man thinks I’m some long-dead wife who betrayed him, and as payback, he’s determined to take every last thing I care about from me—my heart included.

Unless I stop him first.

A Hunger of Thorns by Lili Wilkinson
Expected Publication: April 18th, 2023
From Goodreads:
Maude is the daughter of witches. She spent her childhood running wild with her best friend, Odette, weaving stories of girls who slayed dragons and saved princes. Then Maude grew up and lost her magic—and her best friend.

These days, magic is toothless, reduced to glamour patches and psychic energy drinks found in supermarkets and shopping malls. Odette has always hungered for forbidden, dangerous magic, and two weeks ago she went searching for it. Now she’s missing, and everyone says she’s dead. Everyone except Maude.

Storytelling has always been Maude’s gift, so she knows all about girls who get lost in the woods. She’s sure she can find Odette inside the ruins of Sicklehurst, an abandoned power plant built over an ancient magical forest—a place nobody else seems to remember is there. The danger is, no one knows what remains inside Sicklehurst, either. And every good story is sure to have a monster.

There's some really great books, series, and authors in there, that I can't wait for these books to come out! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Week 10 Review: Both Feet in the Grave

From Goodreads:
If you thought you learned more about the dangerous and sexy alpha vampire, Bones, in The Other Half of the Grave, you haven't seen anything yet...

Cat disappeared from Bones' life to protect him, but this Master vampire will keep his promise to find her.

My Review:
I adored reading this book! I love this series so much, and I've read that Cat's version of this book was what Jeaniene Frost imagined first at the start of the series, and then had to go and write what became the first book. So seeing it from Bones' perspective was fantastic!

That sequence of scenes when they're reunited after all this time, it's a favourite from the series. To see it from Bones' perspective, and to learn all that he knew beforehand, what he put into place, that was so great! In the authors note beforehand, it mentions that technology was updated, and that couples see things differently, but oh, there was a lot of that Cat didn't know!

It was interesting to see Tate, because of his infatuation with Cat, and boy does it peeve Bones! But he is Cat's friend, which puts him in an awkward position. The amount of times he thinks about killing Tate was hilarious!

To see things from behind the scenes, as everything was pulling together for the plot against Ian, it was a big strange, now that Ian's had his own series and found his happy ending. But it was really satisfying to see Cat win her fight, and their wedding!

I loved reading this book, and I hope we continue to get these books from his perspective!

Week 14 Review: The Other Half of the Grave

From Goodreads:
From the New York Times bestselling author of the Night Huntress series comes a thrilling new look at the iconic origin story of Cat and Bones, as experienced by Bones…from the other half of the grave.

There are two sides to every story–and the sizzling British alpha vampire, Bones, has a lot to say…

Ever wondered what Bones was thinking and feeling when he and half-vampire Cat Crawfield first met? Or how their story might differ if he were the one telling it? Now, relive the beginning of Cat and Bones' bestselling love story through Bones' point of view, which reveals a darker, sexier take on their early days, as well as a deeper dive into Bones' past, the vampire world, and other things that Cat didn't see when their story was told only through her eyes in Halfway to the Grave.

Cat had her say. Now, it's Bones' turn.

My Review:
Oh, this was such a fantastic read! I did read what Jeaniene Frost initially posted of Bone's perspective of the first book, but this is the whole book, and yeah, I loved it! It was interesting to see what Bones was thinking-and what he knew. It was so great to get the other half of the story!

Of course I was excited to learn what Bones was thinking in these moments, besides the steamy stuff, because of course, it's Bones, there's going to be steam. But I didn't realize how quickly everything would happen. And some things that he knew, well, it was really interesting to learn that information!

Bones is very different from Cat, and I had a great time seeing her from the outside, because it's different from being inside her head. And her hatred of vampires, of herself, is a pretty big deal for him, not just for his romantic chances, but for her self-esteem and self worth. I felt bad, but knowing it would get better helped!

That ending, knowing it was coming, was hard. But it was one of the moments that I especially am glad that we got this book to be in Bone's head, because Cat wasn't there for this. So it was really fantastic to see what happened then, even though it hurt! Plus knowing what was coming (and the epilogue!) helped!

I loved this book, and I can't wait to see what Jeaniene Frost writes next!

When A Princess Proposes by Kerrelyn Sparks
Expected Publication: April 26th, 2022
From Goodreads:
Aerthlan’s five Embraced queens have reigned for twenty years, in peace secured by the power of their magic. But now a new and insidious threat has appeared, to test a new generation.

DESIRE AND DECEPTION

All Princess Eviana needs is an escape. Possessed of an unfortunate and unusual Embraced gift, which she’s been banned from using, she required no training. Now, her overprotective parents want her to wed. As a result, the palace is crammed with obnoxious noblemen. . . . Until Quentin, the enigmatic eagle shifter and royal spy, maneuvers several of the unsuitable suitors into revealing their most embarrassing secrets before the court. Finally, Eviana has an excuse to free herself. If only her family knew the blow that’s shaken her: golden-eyed Quentin’s refusal to let her near . . .

Heroic, but low born, Quentin’s infatuation with Eviana is as inappropriate as it is unshakable. He must keep away from her, for his own sake. But after a series of suspicious deaths, and the princess’s narrow escape from kidnapping, Quentin knows that only together can they expose the danger stalking Aerthlan’s Embraced. On foot, in disguise, they’ll need trust and quick wits to uncover the vicious conspiracy closing around them. But finding the truth might break down their own defenses as well . . .

The Discord of Gods by Jenn Lyons
Expected Publication: April 26th, 2022
From Goodreads:
he Discord of Gods marks the epic conclusion to Jenn Lyons's Chorus of Dragons series, closing out the saga that began with The Ruin of Kings, for fans of Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss.

THEIR CONFLICT COULD END THEM ALL.

Relos Var's final plans to enslave the universe are on the cusp of fruition. He believes there's only one being in existence that might be able to stop him: the demon Xaltorath.

As these two masterminds circle each other, neither is paying attention to the third player on the board, Kihrin. Unfortunately, keeping himself classified in the 'pawn' category means Kihrin must pretend to be everything the prophecies threatened he'd become: the destroyer of all, the sun eater, a mindless, remorseless plague upon the land. It also means finding an excuse to not destroy the people he loves (or any of the remaining Immortals) without arousing suspicion.

Kihrin's goals are complicated by the fact that not all of his 'act' is one. His intentions may be sincere, but he's still being forced to grapple with the aftereffects of the corrupted magic ritual that twisted both him and the dragons. Worse, he's now tied to a body that is the literal avatar of a star — a form that is becoming increasingly, catastrophically unstable. All of which means he's running out of time.

After all, some stars fade — but others explode.

4 books that I'm so excited for! I love these authors and these series and I can't wait to read them! April is wrapping up with some really amazing reads! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Week 27 Review: Hex on the Beach

From Goodreads:
Girls Night Out has never been so much fun–but what are they going to do with all these bodies?

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Authors Kelley Armstrong, Jeaniene Frost, and Melissa Marr deliver a sexy summer read with this novel-length anthology containing three all-new stories from their Cursed Luck, Night Huntress, and Faery Bargains worlds. Kennedy, Cat, and Gen are just trying to enjoy their respective getaways, but when immortals, vampires, and witches come out to play, things are bound to go awry. Let the supernatural hijinks begin!

A GRAVE GIRLS' GETAWAY by Jeaniene Frost

Vampire Cat Crawfield Russell is looking forward to a little down time with her best friend, Denise. But when witches crash the party, a fun getaway turns into a paranormal showdown.

GODDESS OF SUMMER LOVE by Kelley Armstrong

The goddess of love sets her sights on the Bennett sisters for a little Memorial Day matchmaking. The plan is to resurrect a local unsolved mystery for the sisters–and their love interests–to solve. But, of course, nothing goes according to plan.

DAQUIRIS AND DAGGERS by Melissa Marr

A fun spa weekend away with friends in a city free of monsters, what could be better? Gen's necromancy had been on the fritz, so a recharge sounds perfect–until she arrives in San Diego to discover that either the spa is too steps beyond weird or there's magic afoot.

My Review:
I had such a great time reading this anthology! I love all these authors, and I love all these series that these stories were in, and I had a blast reading all these stories! I'm so glad that it exists! All these stories added something to their worlds,  just by existing!

I loved having a story narrated by Vanessa, seeing Kennedy and Aiden from an outsider's perspective.  I enjoyed this story, of a mystery in Kennedy's hometown, because of course it'd be interesting for them to investigate! I loved the romance and the mystery, and I can't wait for the next book in the Cursed Luck series!

For A Grave Girls' Getaway, it was so great to see the world post-Wicked All Night, and all the changes that that book had on the world. We had Cat who was worried about her parenting, about how she thought she was messing up. So I really enjoyed this time with her, and taking a vacation that quickly turned deadly!

Finally, for Daquiris and Daggers, it was great to have some girl time with the gang, as well as that bonding time with the King, which was really great! I had a great time with the girls, and I'm interested to see where that romance goes!

This anthology was so great, and it has me desperate for more from all of these worlds!

The Warlord by Gena Showalter
Expected Publication: February 23rd, 2021
From Goodreads:
New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter begins a dark, sexy new series - Rise of the Warlords - with a fan-favourite character from her beloved Lords of the Underworld series, Taliyah Skyhawk. The ice maiden faces off with her greatest enemy, a villain brutal beyond imagining.

For centuries, Taliyah Skyhawk has prepared to become Harpy General, leader of the deadliest female army in existence. One of the requirements? Remain a virgin. But, for a chance to save her people, she must wed the fearless leader of the Astra Planeta, Alaroc Phaethon.

The time has come for Roc to sacrifice another virgin bride to his god. There has never been a woman alluring enough to tempt him from his path. No warrioress powerful enough to overcome his incredible strength. No enchantress desirable enough to make him burn beyond reason. Until now.

With the clock ticking, war between husband and wife ignites. Except Taliyah never expected the merciless king to challenge the future she once envisioned. She certainly never anticipated the thrill of their battles turning into games... The problem is, only one spouse can survive.

Love is a battlefield in Showalter's The Warlord.

Calculated Risks by Seanan McGuire
Expected Publication: February 23rd, 2021
From Goodreads:
The tenth book in the fast-paced InCryptid urban fantasy series returns to the mishaps of the Price family, eccentric cryptozoologists who safeguard the world of magical creatures living in secret among humans.

Just when Sarah Zellaby, adopted Price cousin and telepathic ambush predator, thought that things couldn’t get worse, she’s had to go and prove herself wrong. After being kidnapped and manipulated by her birth family, she has undergone a transformation called an instar, reaching back to her Apocritic origins to metamorphize. While externally the same, she is internally much more powerful, and much more difficult to control.

Even by herself. After years of denial, the fact that she will always be a cuckoo has become impossible to deny.

Now stranded in another dimension with a handful of allies who seem to have no idea who she is–including her cousin Annie and her maybe-boyfriend Artie, both of whom have forgotten their relationship–and a bunch of cuckoos with good reason to want her dead, Sarah must figure out not only how to contend with her situation, but with the new realities of her future. What is she now? Who is she now? Is that person someone she can live with?

And when all is said and done, will she be able to get the people she loves, whether or not they’ve forgotten her, safely home?

The rich live here, along with those whose job it is to make their lives easier. And somebody knows what happened to Nina one rainy night ten years ago.

Her son Aarav heard a chilling scream that night, and he’s determined to uncover the ugly truth that lives beneath the moneyed elegance…but no one is ready for the murderous secrets about to crawl out of the dark.

The Initial Insult by Mindy McGinnis
Expected Publication: February 23rd, 2021
From Goodreads:
Welcome to Amontillado, Ohio, where your last name is worth more than money, and secrets can be kept… for a price.

Tress Montor knows that her family used to mean something—until she didn’t have a family anymore. When her parents disappeared seven years ago while driving her best friend home, Tress lost everything. She might still be a Montor, but the entire town shuns her now that she lives with her drunken, one-eyed grandfather at what locals refer to as the “White Trash Zoo,” – a wild animal attraction featuring a zebra, a chimpanzee, and a panther, among other things.

Felicity Turnado has it all – looks, money, and a secret that she’s kept hidden. She knows that one misstep could send her tumbling from the top of the social ladder, and she’s worked hard to make everyone forget that she was with the Montors the night they disappeared. Felicity has buried what she knows so deeply that she can’t even remember what it is… only that she can’t look at Tress without having a panic attack.

But she’ll have to.

Tress has a plan. A Halloween costume party at an abandoned house provides the ideal situation for Tress to pry the truth from Felicity – brick by brick – as she slowly seals her former best friend into a coal chute. With a drunken party above them, and a loose panther on the prowl, Tress will have her answers – or settle for revenge.

In the first book of this duology, award-winning author Mindy McGinnis draws inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe and masterfully delivers a dark, propulsive mystery in alternating points of view that unravels a friendship . . . forevermore.

Constantly at odds and left with no other choice, they team up to conduct an investigation of their own. But when Doug’s past comes back to haunt them, Jarli fears that there’s little hope in getting out of this one alive.

Prepped by Bethany Mangle
Expected Publication: February 23rd, 2021
From Goodreads:
For fans of Jeff Zentner and Katie Henry comes a thrilling and funny debut about a teen raised in a doomsday community who plots her escape with the boy from the bunker next door.

Always be ready for the worst day of your life.

This is the mantra that Becca Aldaine has grown up with. Her family is part of a community of doomsday preppers, a neighborhood that prioritizes survivalist training over class trips or senior prom. They’re even arranging Becca’s marriage with Roy Kang, the only eligible boy in their community. Roy is a nice guy, but he’s so enthusiastic about prepping that Becca doesn’t have the heart to tell him she’s planning to leave as soon as she can earn a full ride to a college far, far away.

Then a devastating accident rocks Becca’s family and pushes the entire community, including Becca’s usually cynical little sister, deeper into the doomsday ideology. With her getaway plans thrown into jeopardy, the only person Becca can turn to is Roy, who reveals that he’s not nearly as clueless as he’s been pretending to be.

When Roy proposes they run away together, Becca will have to risk everything—including her heart—for a chance to hope for the best instead of planning for the worst.

Yeah, the end of February is going out with a bang, there's so many fantastic books coming out on the 23d, and I can't wait to read these books! Well, the ones I haven't read yet. What about you guys? Happy reading!
