Whatever-You-Want-A-Thon:
Update 25

Clear Your S**t Readathon:

Random:

OK, so I got 36 posts in 7 days, and it was a pretty good week, not much going on, the Thursday was the first day at work that we didn't have mandatory masks in 2 years so that was nice! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Girls of Storm and Shadow and Girls of Fate and Fury!

In this mesmerizing sequel to the New York Times bestselling Girls of Paper and Fire, Lei and Wren have escaped their oppressive lives in the Hidden Palace, but soon learn that freedom comes with a terrible cost.

Lei, the naive country girl who became a royal courtesan, is now known as the Moonchosen, the commoner who managed to do what no one else could. But slaying the cruel Demon King wasn't the end of the plan---it's just the beginning. Now Lei and her warrior love Wren must travel the kingdom to gain support from the far-flung rebel clans. The journey is made even more treacherous thanks to a heavy bounty on Lei's head, as well as insidious doubts that threaten to tear Lei and Wren apart from within.

Meanwhile, an evil plot to eliminate the rebel uprising is taking shape, fueled by dark magic and vengeance. Will Lei succeed in her quest to overthrow the monarchy and protect her love for Wren, or will she fall victim to the sinister magic that seeks to destroy her?
The epic romance of Lei and Wren comes to a breathtaking conclusion in the explosive finale to the acclaimed, New York Times bestselling Girls of Paper and Fire series.

'Don't struggle, Lei-zhi. It's time to take you back to the Hidden Palace. You're going home.'

The jaw-dropping conclusion to Girls of Storm and Shadow left the fates of Lei and Wren hanging in the balance. There's one thing Lei knows - she can never return to the Hidden Palace. The trauma and tragedy she suffered behind those opulent walls will plague her forever. She cannot be trapped there with the sadistic king again, especially without Wren.

The last time Lei saw the girl she loved, Wren was fighting an army of soldiers in a furious battle to the death.

With the two girls torn apart and each in great peril, will they reunite at last, or have their destinies diverged forever?

Week 24 Review: Throwing Shade

From Goodreads:
Middle-aged. Divorced. Hormonally imbalanced. Then she got magic.
Underestimate her. That'll be fun.

My best friend got tangled up with some vamps and now she's missing. As if that wasn't scary enough, I snapped, and in a cold dark rage, unleashed a rare and powerful shadow magic. So, I won't be having that second date, but in all fairness, he got what he deserved. My only regret is that I may have put a target on me and my kid. I'll fix it, that's what moms do.

Now, with only a mouthy golem and a grumpy-yet-sexy French wolf shifter to help me navigate this world of hidden magic, I'm in a race against time to rescue my friend and keep my loved ones safe from the skeletons in my past.

Sure, I'm caught in a spiderweb of supernatural power plays, but I'm a librarian, I'm over forty, and I'm definitely done with being sidelined in my own life. If anyone can survive this dangerous adventure, it’s me. New to-do list: kick butt and rediscover the woman who got lost along the way.

I’m turning my invisibility into strength; they'll never see me coming.

Throwing Shade features a sassy, slow burn romance, and is perfect for fans of K.F. Breene, Darynda Jones, and Shannon Mayer.

My Review:
I had such a great time reading this book! I really enjoy Deborah Wilde's writing, and these worlds are so interesting, I really enjoy these Jewish magical worlds, since I basically know nothing about them. And they're all so different!

Miri was so fantastic to read about, she's divorced with a teenager, and she has magic that she's hidden away, given what happened to her parents. But now her friend is missing, and Miri is pulled into the magical world.

I had such a great time watching her and Laurent interact, there was some pretty great banter between the two of them! They both have their issues from their pasts, but oh, it was so much fun watching these two interact!

The investigation into her missing friend-and her dive into this world that she's kept out of-was really interesting to read. I loved learning about this world, and hoping that she'd find her friend. It was just a great adventure to read!

This was a wonderful read, and I can't wait to continue the series!

Waiting on Wednesday #543, October 6th

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

A Shade Too Far by Deborah Wilde
Expected Publication: October 18th, 2021
From Goodreads:
Miriam’s hot flashes leave her shvitzing, and 10PM is the new midnight, but she still craves an adventure, sexytimes, (and maybe a nap.)

When I stole a demon artifact for a client, I never expected it to result in a magic curse. Failure to reverse it will result in the death of someone close to me, the end of my uneasy alliance with the head vampire, and open season on my family.

As if that didn’t suck enough, my screw-up on a dangerous fact-finding mission may have kicked my sexual tension with the wolf shifter in the balls. At least I’m not obsessing over it, since fighting through a maze of mind games, tested loyalties, and secrets is consuming all my energy.

So, glass half-full.

Now armed with my trusty to-do list, I’m determined to multitask my way to victory like a magic badass.

Yaas, Queen.

A Shade Too Far is perfect for fans of K.F. Breene, Shannon Mayer, Victoria Danann, Brenda Trim, and Heloise Hull.

Get it now!

A Shadow in the Ember by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Expected Publication: October 19th, 2021
From Goodreads:
The Flesh and Fire series is set in the beloved Blood and Ash world.

Born shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierel’s future has never been hers. Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort.

However, Sera’s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasania—she’s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one mission—one target. Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and then…end him. If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot.

Sera has always known what she is. Chosen. Consort. Assassin. Weapon. A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood. A monster. Until him. Until the Primal of Death’s unexpected words and deeds chase away the darkness gathering inside her. And his seductive touch ignites a passion she’s never allowed herself to feel and cannot feel for him. But Sera has never had a choice. Either way, her life is forfeit—it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death.

Little Thieves by Margaret Owen
Expected Publication: October 19th, 2021
From Goodreads:
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful, kind princess who was betrothed to the prince of a faraway kingdom. When she set off for her new home, her mother gave her a maid for a companion on the journey.

But instead of serving the princess, the wicked maid stole her place.

For a year the true princess toiled away like a common goose girl, while the wicked maid lived high in the palace, fooling the kingdom. But the truth came out. The princess took back her name, her crown, and her husband, and the imposter died for her crimes.

Then one day, the wicked maid...

...told her own story.

Bad Girls Never Die by Jennifer Mathieu
Expected Publication: October 19th, 2021
From Goodreads:
From the acclaimed author of Moxie comes a gripping gender-flipped reimagining of The Outsiders that explores the deep bonds of female friendship and what it takes to be a "bad girl."

1964. Houston, Texas.

Evie Barnes is a bad girl. So are all her friends. They’re the sort who wear bold makeup, laugh too loud, and run around with boys. Most of all, they protect their own against the world. So when Evie is saved from a sinister encounter by a good girl from the "right" side of the tracks, every rule she's always lived by is called into question. Now she must redefine what it means to be a bad girl and rethink everything she knew about loyalty.

In this riveting story of murder, secrets, and tragedy, Jennifer Mathieu puts a female twist on S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders. Bad Girls Never Say Die has all the drama and heartache of that teen classic, but with a feminist take just right for our times.

Fumiko and the Finicky Nestmate
Expected Publication: October 22nd, 2021
She could make a mess of everything. Especially him.
The Junzi—also known as the Four Gentlemen—are a set of ancient weapons fashioned from remnants. Dragons refer to them as the Four Storms, and Hisoka Twineshaft believes they will make a difference in the hunt for the rogue. But someone else is interested in gathering up these crystal masterpieces. The so-called Gentleman Bandit is responsible for two thefts already, and Hisoka is concerned for the Bamboo Stave. So he deploys an elite taskforce to guard the treasure. And to catch a thief.

Juuyu Farroost and his teammates regroup at a safehouse tucked under the boughs of one of the oldest—and most heavily fortified—orphan trees in the Americas. Fumiko and her tree twin have enough rooms for all of them. If they can shift enough of the woman’s clutter to set up their equipment. Juuyu’s expertise is essential to the success of their mission, but he can barely focus thanks to Fumiko, her messes, and Akira, who apparently owes Boon a favor.

Yeah, this week sounds really great for book releases! These are some really great books that I can't wait to read! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Waiting on Wednesday #523, May 19th

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

Made in the Shade by Deborah Wilde
Expected Publication: June 7th, 2021
From Goodreads:
Miriam Feldman’s got a murder to solve, a mouthy golem to corral, and her name to clear. Quite frankly, she’s swamped.

Her new gig as a fixer for the magic community is a lot like being a full-time mom to someone else’s kids… they get annoying faster but don’t respond to guilt trips. And sure, maybe she feels kind of grumpy and stabby about these irritating jobs, but that doesn’t mean she killed her latest client!

As far as the magic police are concerned, Miri with her particular powers and her wolf shifter friend Laurent might as well have “guilty of murder” tattooed on their foreheads. If Miri and Laurent lose this fight, it’ll be a one-way trip to Deadman’s Island. Talk about a real buzzkill for their easy banter and deepening chemistry.

Even worse, the non-magic cops are also investigating the crime—and Miri’s ex-husband is the lead detective. This wasn’t how she meant to pop his cherry about the existence of magic, but the time for foreplay is over.

To unmask the real killer, Miri will have to navigate hidden agendas, lies, and the undead. But hey, she’s faced worse; she used to be on the PTA.

Made in the Shade features a sassy, slow burn romance, and is perfect for fans of K.F. Breene, Darynda Jones, and Shannon Mayer.

Get it now!

The Bullet by Iris Johansen
Expected Publication: June 8th, 2021
From Goodreads:
Eve Duncan and Joe Quinn must protect the life of a brilliant scientist so that she can live long enough to bring her discovery to the world, in this fast-paced thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen.

Diane Connors is a dedicated doctor with the world’s biggest secret, a discovery that could have shocking global ramifications.  But while conducting private research trials, word has gotten out. The wrong people have heard the news and now want to hide Diane’s achievement for their own ends.

With nowhere else to turn, Diane finds herself on the doorstep of the last man she wants to ask for help: her ex-husband, Joe Quinn. Joe has remarried, and he and his wife, Eve Duncan, seem blissfully happy in their quiet, rural life until they are faced with the challenge of risking it all—even their marriage itself—for the greater good …

Now Eve is trapped in a web of murder and deceit as powerful enemies rush to cover up the truth, determined that Diane’s discovery goes with her to the grave—even if Eve and Joe get buried with her.

Seasons of Chaos by Elle Coimano
Expected Publication: June 8th, 2021
From Goodreads:
Perfect for fans of Holly Black and Victoria Schwab, this enthralling duology follows Jack and Fleur, star-crossed lovers trapped in an endless cycle of death.

As immortal Seasons, Jack and Fleur wielded powerful magic in their roles as a Winter and a Spring. Yet there wasn’t magic strong enough to keep them apart, and they risked everything for their love, for the freedom to live their lives as they choose—together.

That choice came at a cost. Jack sacrificed his Winter magic—and his immortality—to ensure their survival. Although he’d do anything for Fleur, he can’t deny the emptiness he’s felt since. Or the fear that his choice to give up his magic may have doomed them after all.

The world they thought they left behind is still dealing with the fallout of the rebellion they started. With Professor Lyon as the new Chronos, Seasons are free to do as they please. But not everyone is happy with the change in leadership. When an old enemy seeks revenge, the world’s most powerful magic runs wild and unchecked, creating global chaos.

Thrust into the middle of a new war, Jack and Fleur are faced with the aftermath of their choices. But are they strong enough to save the world from a storm that’s spinning out of control.

Monstrous Design by Kat Dunn
Expected Publication: June 10th, 2021
From Goodreads:
Following the thrills and spills of Dangerous Remedy, the Battalion of the Dead return in a dazzling new adventure, set amid the opulence and squalour of 18th-century London and Paris.

1794, London: Camille and Al are desperately hunting Olympe's kidnapper. From the glamorous excesses of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens to the city's seedy underbelly, they are caught in a dangerous game of lies and deceit. And a terrible new enemy lies in wait with designs more monstrous than they could ever imagine... Can Camille play on to the end or will she be forced to show her hand?

In Paris, the Duc is playing his own dangerous games. With Ada in his thrall, old loyalties are thrown into question. The Battalion are torn apart as never before, and everything – Ada's love for Camille, her allegiance to the battalion itself – is under threat.

Girls at the Edge of the World by Laura Brooke Robson
Expected Publication: June 8th, 2021
From Goodreads:
Set in a world on the edge of an apocryphal flood, this heart-stoppingly romantic fantasy debut is perfect for fans of Rachel Hartman and Rae Carson.

In a world bound for an epic flood, only a chosen few are guaranteed safe passage into the new world once the waters recede. The Kostrovian royal court will be saved, of course, along with their guards. But the fate of the court's Royal Flyers, a lauded fleet of aerial silk performers, is less certain. Hell-bent on survival, Principal Flyer, Natasha Koskinen, will do anything to save the Flyers, who are the only family she's ever known. Even if "anything" means molding herself into the type of girl who could be courted by Prince Nikolai. But unbeknownst to Natasha, her newest recruit, Ella Neves, is driven less by her desire to survive the floods than her thirst for revenge. And Ella's mission could put everything Natasha has worked for in peril.

As the oceans rise, so too does an undeniable spark between the two flyers. With the end of the world looming, and dark secrets about the Kostrovian court coming to light, Ella and Natasha can either give in to despair . . . or find a new reason to live.

Clear Your S**t Readathon 2020:

Random:

OK, so I got 56 posts in 7 days, I had a few readathons going on, though some are now over, and I read a lot, so yeah, lots of posts about that. And it was a pretty great week, and I can't wait for next week! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Blink of an Eye, The Bone Maker, Capturing the Earl, White Night, It's My Birthday, Too, Heorot, Mike, Small Favor, The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry, and Wicked All Night.
A #1 New York Times bestselling author and an Edgar Award winner, Iris and Roy Johansen, team up to deliver a gripping new novel featuring investigator Kendra Michaels -- whose observational skills are worthy of a modern-day Sherlock Holmes.

Delilah Winter is one of the hottest pop stars on the planet, so how in the world was she kidnapped right in the middle of a show at the famous Hollywood Bowl? If anyone can figure it out, it's Dr. Kendra Michaels, who works with local and federal authorities on only the most impossible cases. Blind for the first twenty years of her life until a revolutionary surgical procedure allowed her to regain her sight, Kendra uses her powers of observation -- honed during her years in the dark -- to detect what other investigators don't. She agrees to lead the race to rescue the young singer before time runs out.

Joined by Jessie Mercado, the singer's former bodyguard and a military hero, Kendra closes in on the hideout location but not before casualties mount up. Desperate for leads, Kendra must set aside her personal feelings when agent-for-hire Adam Lynch also volunteers his special skills to aid in the search.

But as the abductor's true purpose becomes clear, the trio uncover a plot they never could have imagined -- leading to a showdown they won't soon forget.
From award-winning author Sarah Beth Durst, a standalone epic fantasy set in a brand-new world of towering mountains and sparkling cities, in which a band of aging warriors have a second chance to defeat dark magic and avenge a haunting loss.

Twenty-five years ago, five heroes risked their lives to defeat the bone maker Eklor—a corrupt magician who created an inhuman army using animal bones. But victory came at a tragic price. Only four of the heroes survived.

Since then, Kreya, the group's leader, has exiled herself to a remote tower and devoted herself to one purpose: resurrecting her dead husband. But such a task requires both a cache of human bones and a sacrifice—for each day he lives, she will live one less.

She'd rather live one year with her husband than a hundred without him, but using human bones for magic is illegal in Vos. The dead are burned—as are any bone workers who violate the law. Yet Kreya knows where she can find the bones she needs: the battlefield where her husband and countless others lost their lives.

But defying the laws of the land exposes a terrible possibility. Maybe the dead don't rest in peace after all.

Five warriors—one broken, one gone soft, one pursuing a simple life, one stuck in the past, and one who should be dead. Their story should have been finished. But evil doesn't stop just because someone once said, "the end."
The friendship of four young ladies has created an indestructible bond to protect one another from the perils of love and marriage...

After the demise of her friend's disastrous marriage, Mercedes Parsons isn't about to let the widowed Wallflower of West Lane, Lady Aurora Radcliff, undertake another perilous trip to the altar. At least, not before the bridegroom-to-be is thoroughly investigated. If only Mercy could stop her uncharacteristic daydreaming about Wesley Renshaw's charm, his intellect, his dashing good looks. After all, the earl has already set his sights on her best friend! She must keep her wits about her and avoid giving into temptation.

Wesley is both irritated and intrigued by the machinations of Mercy—He cannot let her cleverness and beauty distract him. He needs to marry her friend, Aurora, so he can reclaim his family's ancestral home. A wrong he has hoped to right his entire life. Besides, who is penniless spinster Mercedes Parsons to decide whom he can and cannot marry? Yet while he admires her unwavering loyalty to her friends, he decides it's high time the misguided woman had a dose of her own medicine. Two can play at this spying game. But they are both embarked on a dangerous charade. And it won’t be merely Mercy's reputation at risk—or her heart on the line—as Wesley comes to the inescapable conclusion that he has found the right woman at exactly the wrong time.
A sensational addition to the Dresden Files adventures-from a USA Today bestselling author. Professional wizard Harry Dresden is investigating a series of deaths in Chicago. Someone is killing practitioners of magic, those incapable of becoming full-fledged wizards. Shockingly, all the evidence points to Harry's half-brother, Thomas, as the murderer. Determined to clear his sibling's name, Harry uncovers a conspiracy within the White Council of Wizards that threatens not only him, but his nearest and dearest, too...increasingly significant threat to Western power.
Harry and Molly's mission to deliver Thomas' birthday gift goes awry.
Harry teams up with Miss Gard to find a missing bride.

A visit to the mechanic.  Set between White Night and Small Favor–shortly after the graphic novel Wild Card.
Harry Dresden's life finally seems to be calming down-until a shadow from the past returns. Mab, monarch of the Sidhe Winter Court, calls in an old favor from Harry-one small favor that will trap him between a nightmarish foe and an equally deadly ally, and that will strain his skills-and loyalties-to their very limits.
A charming historical fantasy with a tender love story at its core, from the author of Unnatural Magic.

Hard-drinking petty thief Dellaria Wells is down on her luck in the city of Leiscourt—again. Then she sees a want ad for a female bodyguard, and she fast-talks her way into the high-paying job. Along with a team of other women, she's meant to protect a rich young lady from mysterious assassins.

At first Delly thinks the danger is exaggerated, but a series of attacks shows there's much to fear. Then she begins to fall for Winn, one of the other bodyguards, and the women team up against a mysterious, magical foe who seems to have allies everywhere.
Set in New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress World, ancient deities are poised to wreck havoc, unless vampires Veritas and Ian can stop them … in this thrilling Night Rebel novel!

A gift from the gods…

Veritas and Ian have finally defeated their worst enemy, but the power it took to pierce through to the netherworld has unexpected consequences. Soon, Veritas is forced to rely on the last person she trusts---a golden deity named Phanes, who seeks far more than a temporary alliance with the beautiful vampire.

Can unleash hell…

But an escape from the netherworld soon pits Veritas and Ian against supernatural beings seeking to rule over mortals once again. Now, they must rally friends and foes alike—if the vampire council doesn't execute Veritas first. Plus, a wedge between Veritas and Ian threatens to destroy their love. Can they stand together against the unearthly powers about to be unleashed? Or does their love—and humanity—not stand a chance?

Week 44 Review: Revenge & Rapture

From Goodreads:
Ash is tightening the noose on her enemies…
… and losing her grip on reality.

Ash's revenge plans for Chariot and Isaac Montefiore take a surreal turn when Isaac's wife hires Ash to retrieve an item that Isaac is obsessed with finding. Ash takes the job, but this quest throws her back into Levi's path and puts Rafael in grave danger.

Meanwhile, Ash runs across a crime victim who possesses mysterious magic. Ash's search for the attacker once again pits her against the Queen of Hearts and sends Ash down the rabbit hole of what's real. Sanity is highly overrated, anyway, right?

To top it all off, Ash's mother is being blackmailed by someone threatening to expose Ash as a Rogue unless Talia resigns from her political career for good. Talk about putting the "fun" in family dysfunction.

Secrets, vengeance, and magic collide in the final chapter of The Jezebel Files. With love, family, and her enemy's immortality on the line, a con set in motion fifteen years ago comes to an explosive conclusion, and Ash only has one chance to come out alive.

My Review:
Yeah, I loved reading this book! It was a really fantastic end to the series, a lot happens, and I just enjoyed it so much! I loved seeing these characters work and fight for the world and for their happiness, it was just so fantastic!

Of course, the main plot is dealing with the Jezebel stuff, finding a way to take down Levi's dad, which takes a few different routes. Then there's the case of Talia being blackmailed because Ash is supposedly a Rogue. Oh, and because of the above, a bit of a clash with the Queen of Hearts, just to make things interesting!

But it's also Ash's relationship with Levi, which really took a hit with the ending of the last book. It was hard to watch them interact with each other here, they've really done a number on one another. But I really enjoyed that they made it out Ok!

That ending was really great! I loved how well planned it was, for how short a time that they had to pull it all together. And I didn't really expect where it would end, but it's so satisfying, and I'm excited for Ash and her future!

This was such a great read, and I'm excited to pick up Deborah Wilde's next series!
