Week 31 Reviews: North and South, Part 1, North and South, Part 2, North and South, Part 3

From Goodreads:
From National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, Eisner Award winner, and #1 New York Times bestseller Gene Yang!

When Aang leaves to aid Zuko with the Kemurikage, Katara and Sokka return to the Southern Water Tribe by themselves. Katara is shocked to find that her beloved village has become a bustling city, with none other than their father, Hakoda, in charge! A northerner named Malina seems to be behind this change, pushing the North and South to be more unified . . . but what are her true goals?

After attempting to kidnap Katara and Sokka, Southerner Gilak leaves a haunting note for Hakoda: "Soon you will see the truth, chieftain". The vow leaves everyone on edge--including Katara, who remains wary of the two tribes' integration. As Northerner Malina announces a partnership with the company owned by Toph Beifong's father, her own brother comes forward to defame her. Have Katara's worst fears been confirmed?

From Goodreads:
Fire Lord Zuko and Earth King Kuei arrive in the Southern Water Tribe amid protests of Gilak's imprisonment. While the leaders hold council to solidify Malina and Hakoda's unification plans, Gilak breaks free and leads a powerful rebellion! In the face of these two opposing tribes, Katara will have to make peace with her nostalgia and distrust to save the home she loves from being permanently torn apart.

My Review:
I loved reading this story arc so much! It was really great to go back to the Southern Water Tribe, where we haven't been since the very beginning of the show, at least to my knowledge, in Aang's time, since Korra started there.

And this story is of the start of the progress from what it was like, to what it'll become. This is the 2nd big story about progress, and the growing pains between what is traditional, and the future technologies. It was really great to see the Southern Water Tribe's story!

Of course the main focus was on Katara and Sokka, and over time, the rest of Team Avatar trickled in for various reasons. That Katara doesn't really want things to change, for the tribe, and for her father to find someone new, who is helping orchestrating those changes in the tribe, really gives her a person to focus her dislike on.

There was plenty of twists and turns and action, and I loved watching everything unfold, and how some one off mentions of things came together for that final action scene to beat the bad guys! That was delightful to read!

This was such a great read, and I can't wait to continue!

Week 10 Review: Smoke and Shadow, Part 1, Smoke and Shadow, Part 2, Smoke and Shadow, Part 3

From Goodreads:
The Fire Nation is threatened by a prophecy told by the Kemurikage--mysterious figures thought only to exist in legend--remove Zuko from the throne or the country will perish! Avatar Aang and his friends escort Zuko and his family back to the capitol completely unaware of the looming threat growing in the city. Unrest is brewing as the New Ozai Society prepares to make its move against the crown, and children begin to go missing from their homes under mysterious circumstances!

With the disappearances of children in the Fire Nation capital, Avatar Aang and his friends are doing everything they can to find out who—or what—is responsible.

Aang and Zuko must work together to keep the peace, but the emergence of the New Ozai Society, and the appearance of the mysterious Kemurikage of legend, may prove to be too much even for the Avatar when the true culprit of the kidnappings is revealed!

Children are disappearing in the Fire Nation capital! Avatar Aang and his friends are doing everything in their power to save them—but will it be enough?

And worse, when Azula—the mad sister of Fire Lord Zuko—appears on the scene, Zuko locks down the city to catch her, igniting fear and riots in the streets! Will Zuko follow in his evil father's footsteps in order to save those he holds dear?

My Review:
I had a great time reading this latest graphic novel story arc! I love the world of Avatar: the Last Airbender, and spending this time with these characters after the show ended has been really great! And I really enjoyed this story!

This story arc was really fantastic to read! We really get to focus on the Fire Nation, and on Zuko's methods of rulership. That kids are getting abducted by spirits-and the uprising that follows, and Zuko's response to it...it was a compelling plot,

Because one hand, there's protecting your people. On the other, there's giving into fear. There's also doing what the bad guy wants, and oh, once we knew what was going on, I was cheering for Zuko to overcome the obstacles!

This had hardly any of Team Avatar. We do get Aang, but not a lot. And we briefly see Katara and Sokka, but reading further along, we're going to get the adventures that they're having in the next story arc, and I can't wait to read it!

These were really fantastic to read, and I can't wait to continue on in this world!

Week 4 Reviews: The Rift, Part 1, The Rift, Part 2, The Rift, Part 3

From Goodreads:
Avatar Aang asks his friends to help him honor Yangchen's Festival—one of the highest Air Nomad holidays, which hasn't been celebrated in over one hundred years.

But cryptic visits from the spirit of Avatar Yangchen herself lead Aang to discover a jointly owned Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom refinery—operating on land sacred to the Airbenders! Is this the cause of the pollution Aang finds there, or is a more mysterious menace afoot?

Team Avatar find themselves up to their necks in trouble as mysterious forces threaten to destroy land once sacred to the Airbenders! While Aang journeys to the spirit world in search of clues, Toph faces off against her own past!

The spirits are restless!

As Avatar Aang and his friends confront an ancient spirit determined to destroy a town on land sacred to Air Nomads, Toph and Aang find themselves on opposing sides in a battle of gigantic proportions. If Toph and Aang don't put aside their differences, there's more at stake than just their friendship!

My Review:
I had a really great time reading this graphic novel! It's the first story arc that I'm reading for the first time, and I'm so excited to continue on, see what Team Avatar is doing after the events of the show! Spending time with these characters is just so great!

One thing that I loved, was the return of the Cabbage Man! He was a running gag in the series, and how his cabbages just kept being destroyed by Team Avatar's adventures. So it was really great for him to make an appearance in this media!

This story arc focused on traditions, and why we do the things we do, in two ways-Aang and this festival, and Toph with her dad. The former provided a lot of the external conflict, and the later provided the internal conflict. I loved watching Toph stand up for herself, she's done some amazing things!

The Rift draws it's title from the rift between the Human world and the Spirit Realm, that the Avatar is supposed to bridge the gap. Unfortunately, with Aang's century sleep, things have been forgotten, which leads to the trouble. I loved the message this story gave us about progress, but it is still a bit bittersweet!

These were such great reads, and I can't wait to continue on!

Week 26 Reviews: The Search, Part 1, The Search, Part 2, The Search, Part 3

From Goodreads:
Yang and Gurihiru will return for a second "Avatar: The Last Airbender" graphic novel series called "The Search," which explores the biggest unsolved mystery in "Avatar" lore: what happened to Prince Zuko's mother?

In search of their long-lost mother, Fire Lord Zuko and his deadly and insane sister Azula have brought Avatar Aang and his friends into a mysterious forest, but what they discover within may be more than they can face. Will they too be lost in these woods forever?

The Fate of the Fire Lord!

Avatar Aang travels to the spirit world to parlay with an ancient power, bringing Fire Lord Zuko ever closer to discovering the truth about his mother's fate—and his own past. Yet Zuko's sister Azula is becoming increasingly dangerous, threatening to ruin everything that Zuko, Aang, Katara, and Sokka have struggled to achieve on their search!

My Review
:
It was really great to reread this series! I love the show, and I'm loving the graphic novels, and while I did read this back around the time that it came out, I mentally didn't consider graphic novels to be a part of my blog, so I don't know exactly when. But I know I enjoyed them the first time, as well!

This is the story of Zuko's mom is the focus of this series, and this is the one big question from the show. I did remember most of what when down, but oh, it was really great to watch it unfold, to see Zuko following in his mom's path!

We do switch between Team Avatar in the present, and his mom in the past, and I really enjoyed seeing that, to get her story first hand, and seeing what the gang were doing along the way. It kept the pace up, and gave us the information that we needed!

This really is a bittersweet story, she was taken from the love of her life to marry into the royal family, and then because of his actions, she had to kill the Fire Lord-and be sent away. So there were some really tough choices, but I'm glad for how things worked out in the end! Though Azula might be a problem in the future...This is as far as I read, so everything after this is new, and I can't wait!

Loved reading these again, and I can't wait to continue with the graphic novels series!
