Week 39 Review: Truth
Nina Oberon's life has changed enormously in the last few months. When her mother was killed, Nina discovered the truth about her father, the leader of the Resistance. And now she sports the same Governing Council ordered tattoo of XVI on her wrist that all sixteen-year-old girls have. The one that announces to the world that she is easy prey to predators. But Nina won't be anyone's stereotype. And when she joins an organization of girls working within the Resistance, she knows that they can put an end to one of the most terrifying secret programs the GC has ever conceived. Because the truth always comes out . . . and the consequences can be deadly.
My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! Things are more complicated then there were after XVI, and yeah, it was really great to see how Nina dealt with that! The whole thing with the tattoos, well, yeah, sucks, and is horrible, but they're fighting it!
So now that Nina has the tattoo, well, she also has the surrounding one, too, her life hasn't changed as much as she thought it would. Because she's not the stereotypical girl with the tattoo. But then it turns out that there are quite a few girls who aren't like that!
It feels like the government is out to get Nina and her sister. Her grandparents are declared unfit parents, and her grandfather is arrested by B.O.S.S., which really sucks! And then there's the whole mystery that is running through this book, because the government is horrible, we know that, but proving that is another thing entirely!
Really enjoyed how it ended! They might have succeeded in their mission-only time will tell. There were losses, but ending with Nina with her dad, well, yeah, that's a pretty great ending! I can't wait for the 3rd book! I want more!
I enjoyed this book so much, it was such a great sequel, and I really need that 3rd book now!

Last Letter, First Letter Reading Challenge Update 27
OK, so I have I've been doing some more reading, and I read Truth, Destiny and Deception, Catching Jordan, The Calling, Pretty Crooked.

Then you take that last letter, and search you TBR piles for a book starting with the last letter, so coninuting the example, someone could read "Rotters" next, and then a title that starts with "s."

3. The last letter of the book you read must be the first letter of the next book you read.
4. Words like "the," "a," "and," and those such don't count as the first letter.

Ok, 29 posts in 7 days, so I'm happy with that. Wish I could've read more for the read-a-thon, though!

I didn't get it. So I decided to level the playing field, though I actually might have leveled the whole play. You see, since there aren't any Success in Getting to Be Juliet in Your High School Play spells, I thought I'd cast the next best—a Fame spell. Good idea, right?
Yeah. Instead of bringing me a little fame, it brought me someone a little famous. Shakespeare. Well, Edmund Shakespeare. William's younger brother.
Good thing he's sweet and enthusiastic about helping me with the play...and—ahem—maybe a little bit hot. But he's from the past. Way past. Cars amaze him—cars! And cell phones? Ugh.
Still, there's something about him that's making my eyes go star-crossed....
Penelope (Lo) Marin has always loved to collect beautiful things. Her dad's consulting job means she's grown up moving from one rundown city to the next, and she's learned to cope by collecting (sometimes even stealing) quirky trinkets and souvenirs in each new place--possessions that allow her to feel at least some semblance of home.

Week 42 Review: XVI
Nina Oberon's life is pretty normal: she hangs out with her best friend, Sandy, and their crew, goes to school, plays with her little sister, Dee. But Nina is 15. And like all girls she'll receive a Governing Council-ordered tattoo on her 16th birthday. XVI. Those three letters will be branded on her wrist, announcing to all the world-even the most predatory of men-that she is ready for sex. Considered easy prey by some, portrayed by the Media as sluts who ask for attacks, becoming a "sex-teen" is Nina's worst fear. That is, until right before her birthday, when Nina's mom is brutally attacked. With her dying breaths, she reveals to Nina a shocking truth about her past-one that destroys everything Nina thought she knew. Now, alone but for her sister, Nina must try to discover who she really is, all the while staying one step ahead of her mother's killer.
My Review:
Loved this book so much! So good, so moving, and so "I don't want this to really happen" kind of book. Most definitely the sex-teen thing. That would be really, really bad!
I really loved the story, Julia Karr really hit important issues of the sexuality of teens my age-not me, I definitely wouldn't fit the bill!-and really made me think about it. I wish there was a way that we could politely shake them silly to get them to see that sex isn't something so casual, that it's important and meaningful, and not something to be rushed.
It really made me mad, something that Nina was afraid of, because of this one incident, where this girl was 16, she'd just gotten her tattoo, and then she was at a party that was 18 year old boys, and her. And when she caught on fire, they just got community service. Because they said she was asking for it. She wasn't. The raped her, and they got off virtually spotless. I just wish I could castrate them, that would scar them, and then maybe they'd think twice about the rape.
This was just an excellent book that was thought-provoking, and I loved it, so you guys just need to check it out!
