23 Books to Read in 2023 Update 4

So I read my next book for the 23 Books to Read in 2023 Challenge!

So I read Fragile Destiny by Suzanne Lazear from the NetGalley list!

Yep. Happy reading!

Here's the link to this year's post with my journey.

But to recap, I wanted to do a version of These Books Will Self Destruct in 12 months without the self destruct. I wanted to read books that I've had for a while, that I really needed to get read, but maybe I forgot about them or that I had them. So I made 2 lists, one for each way I have them, as physical books, and as ARC's, half from NetGalley, and half from Edelweiss.

Monthly ARC's Update 44

So I read my next book for Monthly ARC's and it was Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong and Their Vicious Games by Joelle Wellington from the July list, and Transmogrify! Anthology from the May list.

Here's the link to this month's post with my journey.

How it Works:
This is my monthly ARC accountability challenge, to list out the books that I have as ARC's that are being published in the coming month, rounding them up at the start of the month, and seeing how well I did at the end, as well as rounding up the next month's books.

Monthly Series July Round Up

In 2023, I want to make a focus on continuing series. So each month, I'll either draw, or chose, a series that I was current on in a previous year, but has since been continued. A series that I started or continued, but didn't catch up with what was currently published. 2 series that I haven't touched since 2020. A series that I read from this year, but still need to continue. The goal is to finish out as many series as I can, and keep current on the series that are still ongoing.

So how did I do last month?
I read Arcana Rising by Kresley Cole, The Dark Calling by Kresley Cole, From the Grave by Kresley Cole, A Sinister Revenge by Deanna Raybourn, Innocent Darkness by Suzanne Lazear, Charmed Vengeance by Suzanne Lazear, Weather Witch by Shannon Delany, Godslayers by Zoe Hana Mikuta,
Fragile Destiny by Suzanne Lazear, and I'm reading Stormbringer by Shannon Delany and Thunderstruck by Shannon Delany today, so I'm counting that, since today is the last day of June. So I finished 4 series, and stayed current with the 5th, so I'm happy with that!

This month I'm going to draw/I've chosen which series, and the ones that got chosen and I'm going to be reading this month are:
Current in a Previous Year:
Temperance Brennan by Kathy Reichs

Unfinished in a Previous Year:
Kricket by Amy A. Bartol

Untouched Since 2020:
Conquered Earth by J. Barton Mitchell
Alienated by Melissa Landers

Series from This Year:
Semiosis Duology by Sue Burke

Monthly ARC's August Round Up

This is my monthly ARC accountability challenge, to list out the books that I have as ARC's that are being published in the coming month, rounding them up at the start of the month, and seeing how well I did at the end, as well as rounding up the next month's books.

So how did I do last month?
I read 2 of 2 books. Yeah! I know it was a short month, but I did read them all!

So the ARC's that I have coming out in August are
NetGalley:
Guardians of Dawn: Zhara by S. Jae-Jones - August 1st, 2023
The Bone Hacker by Kathy Reichs - August 1st, 2023
The Salt-Black Tree by Lilith Saintcrow - August 8th, 2023
Hellfinder by Paula Stokes - August 9th, 2023
Secrets Never Die by Vincent Ralph - August 29th, 2023
What Happened on Hicks Road by Hannah Jayne - August 29th, 2023
Pride and Prejudice and Pittsburgh by Rachael Lippincott - August 29th, 2023
Sign of the Slayer by Sharina Harris - August 29th, 2023

Edelweiss:
Creeping Beauty by Andrea Portes - August 22nd, 2023
Talulah's Back in Town by Brenda Novak - August 22nd, 2023
Cursed at Dawn by Heather Graham - August 22nd, 2023
A Multitude of Dreams by Mara Rutherford - August 29th, 2023

12 books. Which is not great, but there's some authors and series that I love, so hopefully I read as many of these as I can this month! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Book Blogger Hop #299, June 30th

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer's permission, Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013. Check out the hop here

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop's purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

The Question of the week is: What review rating system do you employ? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

I mainly use the star system, but on my blog, my reviews have 3 icons-heart is enjoyment, book is how much I want to buy it, and star is how likely I think I could reread it. What about you guys? Happy reading!

First Lines Friday #633, June 30th

First Lines Friday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie of Precision Reviews. We encourage all of our fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

-Grab your current read(s)
-Share the first line(s)
-Include the title and author so that other FLF participants can add the book to their TBR Lists!

"'I am not quite myself of late,' Lady Cynthia Astraea, once ranked Fifth of the Nine, complained to her head servant, Laura. Not that a great variety of servants remained for a lady to choose from, as there were currently many better households to find oneself aligned with. Yet Laura had a mission and a mission was enough to keep someone rooted when others fled." -Stormbringer by Shannon Delany

That doesn't sound good! Must read more now! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Random Reads #606, June 29th

Random Reads is a monthly meme (that I'm going to do weekly) hosted by I'm Loving Books to read some books that have been on our TBR piles for a long time. Using Random.org, I got 2577 which turned out to be Fat Girl on a Plane by Kelly deVos! It's been on my TBR pile since November 21st, 2020, and I added it because I love her writing and it sounded really good! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Third Sentence Thursday #620, June 29th

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!

Third Sentence Thursday is a weekly meme which likes to watch fireworks especially while eating a cookie!
1) Take the book you are currently reading and open it to a random page. Share the third full sentence on that page. (If there isn't a third one – like at the end of a chapter or a blank page – you can share the third sentence of the book or just choose another random page.) Feel free to share more than one sentence, if you feel the need to do so.
2) Review this sentence anyway you want (funny and silly reviews encouraged)
3) Post a link to your sentence at Words I Write Crazy (This Blog)
4) Visit one or two of the other blogs to check out their third sentences!

"Not a soul was in sight." -Fragile Destiny by Suzanne Lazear, page 4.

That could be good, that could be bad! Must read more now! What are your guy's 3rd lines? Link up below!

Will the Time Come #630, June 29th

Every Thursday I am going to list a book which I really want to read/keep meaning to get to. These are mostly books which have been on my shelf for awhile now but don't have to be, maybe you got it two weeks ago and really want to read it! Thanks to Jodie from Books for Company for this meme!

In an America split into the genetically superior and inferior, a fiercely ambitious ballerina and a boy from the wrong side of the tracks must stop a deadly virus that is spreading quickly.
Determined to escape from TOR-N, a corrupt Narxis research center, Davis meets another recovered patient, Mercer, whose sweet smile and quirky sense of humor give her hope in humanity again—and a way out. As they make a perilous journey seeking clues that could lead to a cure, Davis and Mercer's friendship begins to evolve into something more... but she's still struggling to let go of her feelings for Cole, whom she believes is dead.

Meanwhile, Cole has plans to change his identity in order to compete in the Olympiads—where Imps have now been invited to compete against Priors. He begins training with Mari, the intense and rebellious daughter of a retired fighter, but through trials and tests that are both exhausting and exhilarating, he finds himself in over his head—literally.

Will both Davis and Cole have the strength to resist temptation? Will they have the courage to face the answers they're seeking? Will their love survive across the divide?

Why the time hasn't come yet...
I don't know, I'm pretty sure I own it, it's the end of the duology, and I enjoyed the first book. So I really should read it! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Waiting on Wednesday #633, June 28th

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

Mister Magic by Kiersten White
Expected Publication: August 1st, 2023
From Goodreads:
Who is Mister Magic? Former child stars reunite to uncover the tragedy that ended their show—and discover the secret of its enigmatic host—in this dark supernatural thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Hide.

Thirty years after a tragic accident shut down production of the classic children’s program Mister Magic, the five surviving cast members have done their best to move on. But just as generations of cultishly devoted fans still cling to the lessons they learned from the show, the cast, known as the Circle of Friends, have spent their lives searching for the happiness they felt while they were on it. The friendship. The feeling of belonging. And the protection of Mister Magic.

But with no surviving video of the show, no evidence of who directed or produced it, and no records of who—or what—the beloved host actually was, memories are all the former Circle of Friends has.

Then a twist of fate brings the castmates back together at the remote desert filming compound that feels like it’s been waiting for them all this time. Even though they haven’t seen each other for years, they understand one another better than anyone has since.

After all, they’re the only ones who hold the secret of that circle, the mystery of the magic man in his infinitely black cape, and, maybe, the answers to what really happened on that deadly last day. But as the Circle of Friends reclaim parts of their past, they begin to wonder: Are they here by choice, or have they been lured into a trap?

Because magic never forgets the taste of your friendship. . . .

The Bone Hacker by Kathy Reichs
Expected Publication: August 1st, 2023
From Goodreads:
#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with her twenty-second high-stakes thriller featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan who, following a series of bizarre disappearances on the islands of Turks and Caicos, enters a sinister labyrinth in which a new technology may wreak worldwide havoc.

Called in to examine what is left of a body struck by lightning, Tempe traces an unusual tattoo to its source and is soon embroiled in a much larger case. Young men—tourists—have been disappearing on the islands of Turks and Caicos for years. Seven years ago, the first victim was found in a strange location with both hands cut off; the other visitors vanished without a trace. But, recently, tantalizing leads have emerged and only Tempe can unravel them.

Maddeningly, the victims seem to have nothing in common—other than the strange locations where their bodies are eventually found, and the fact that the young men all seem to be the least likely to be involved in foul play. Do these attacks have something to do with the islands’ seething culture of gang violence? Tempe isn’t so sure. And then she turns up disturbing clues that what’s at stake may actually have global significance.

It isn’t long before the sound of a ticking clock grows menacingly loud, and then Temper herself becomes a target.

The Narrow by Kate Alice Marshall
Expected Publication: August 1st, 2023
From Goodreads:
A ghost haunting her boarding school uncovers a teen girl's best kept secrets in the Queen of Scream's deliciously terrifying new novel.

Everyone has heard the story of the Narrow. The river that runs behind the Atwood School is only a few feet across and seemingly placid, but beneath the surface, the waters are deep and vicious. It’s said that no one who has fallen in has ever survived.

Eden White knows that isn’t true. Six years ago, she saw Delphine Fournier fall into the Narrow—and live.

Delphine now lives in careful isolation, sealed off from the world. Even a single drop of unpurified water could be deadly to her, and no one but Eden has any idea why. Eden has never told anyone what she saw or spoken to Delphine since, but now, unable to cover her tuition, she has to make a her expenses will be paid in return for serving as a live-in companion to Delphine.

Eden finds herself drawn to the strange and mysterious girl, and the two of them begin to unravel each other’s secrets. Then Eden discovers what happened to the last girl who lived with she was found half-drowned on dry land. Suddenly Eden is waking up to wet footprints tracking to the end of her bed, the sound of rain on the windows when the skies are clear, and a ghostly silhouette in her doorway. Something is haunting Delphine—and now it’s coming for Eden, too.

Kiss the Girl by Zoraida Cordova
Expected Publication: August 1st, 2023
From Goodreads:
A modern tale of unexpectedly falling in love and finding your voice, Kiss the Girl is the highly anticipated third installment in the acclaimed and best-selling Meant to Be collection.

Ariel del Mar is one of the most famous singers in the world. She and her sisters—together, known as the band Siren Seven—have been a pop culture phenomenon since they were kids. On stage, wearing her iconic red wig and sequined costumes, staring out at a sea of fans, is where she shines. Anyone would think she’s the girl who has everything.

But lately, she wants more . Siren Seven is wrapping up their farewell tour, and Ariel can’t wait to spend the summer just living a normal life—part of a world she’s only ever seen from the outside. But her father, the head of Atlantica Records, has other begin her breakout solo career immediately, starting with a splashy announcement on a morning talk show.

The night before, Ariel and her sisters sneak out of their Manhattan penthouse for a night of incognito fun at a rock concert in Brooklyn. It’s there that Ariel crosses paths with Eric Reyes, dreamy lead singer of an up-and-coming band. Unaware of her true identity, Eric spontaneously invites her on the road for the summer. And for the first time in her life, Ariel disobeys her father—and goes with him.

Caught between the world she longs for and the one she’s left behind, can Ariel follow her dreams, fall in love, and, somehow, find her own voice?

The Boy You Always Wanted by Michelle Quach
Expected Publication: August 1st, 2023
From Goodreads:
From Not Here to Be Liked author Michelle Quach comes a smartly funny, heartfelt story told in dual POV about a young woman roping in her childhood crush to act as an honorary male heir to fulfill her grandfather's dying wish. A story about first love, familial duties, and finding yourself--perfect for fans of Emiko Jean and Loan Le.

Francine loves her grandfather, but their time together is running out. He has one final wish: to see a male heir carry on the family traditions. Francine knows his ideas are outdated, but she would do anything for him. Her solution? Ask Ollie Tran, a family friend (and former crush, not that it matters), to pretend to be ceremonially adopted and act like the grandson her A Gung never had.

Ollie has always made a point of avoiding the odd, too blunt (and fine, sort of cute) Francine, whose intensity has always made him uncomfortable. So when she asks him to help deceive her dying A Gung, Ollie's definitely not down. He doesn't get why anyone would go to such lengths, even for family. Especially with a backwards (and sexist, Ollie keeps stressing) scheme like this.

Francine, however, is determined to make it work, and soon Ollie finds himself more invested in her plan--and in her--than he ever thought possible. But as the tangled lies and feelings pile up, Francine will have to discover what exactly she needs for herself--and from Ollie. Because sometimes the boy you always wanted isn't what you expected.

Oh, man, some really amazing authors and series here that I'm so excited for to kick off the month, and I can't wait for them to come out! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Wheel of TBR #161, June 25th

I saw Codie's Book Corner doing the Wheel of TBR, and I thought that sounded like a great way to pick what to read from your TBR. So thanks to her! I'll only do 3 spins, because I'm doing this every week, and so it won't make up my total TBR of the week, but it'll be a start!

Rules:
1. For each week of the month, I'll do 3 spins each week to read each week though I do have the rest of the month to read them. Once a prompt is used, I'll randomly choose one from the list, keeping track of how often a colour comes up. If colour comes up 3 or more times in month, I'll do another spin once it comes up 3 times.
2. If I don't read a book that week or at least start it before the end of the month, then for my next week of spins, I have to add a punishment for each book unread. I'll roll for each unread book, and have to apply each and every punishment chosen to the week.
3. Each month I'll get a prompt from my Binge Read Wheel (either specifically picking the prompt, or spinning the wheel) and I have to read at least 9 books, though I can read more!

Of the books from the last week, I read Godslayers by Zoe Hana Mikuta, Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong, Recovery Road by Christine Feehan.

Binge Read Wheel:
For this month, the wheel chose Dying to Read. I read The Brightest Fell by Seanan McGuire, Night and Silence by Seanan McGuire, The Unkindest Tide by Seanan McGuire, The Killing Frost by Seanan McGuire, When Sorrows Come by Seanan McGuire, Be the Serpent by Seanan McGuire, Godslayers by Zoe Hana Mikuta, Beyond the Black Door by A.M. Strickland, so I've read 26/9+.

For this coming week, the wheel chose Reread.

Prompts Used This Week:
Treat Yo' Shelf, A-Z Random, Physical Collection, WTC Book.

Treat Yo' Shelf-Orange-A Touch of Ruin by Scarlett St. Clair-I bought this book for my birthday, so I'm counting that!

Physical Collection-Cyan-YA Paperbacks collection-Seafire by Natalie C. Parker-This is a YA book that I have physically, so that works!

Bonus Spin for Yellow-WTC Book-Red-Their Vicious Game by Joelle Wellington-I've featured this book in a WTC Book so that works!

The Reward Challenge Update #614, June 25th

Week 25 Review: Beyond the Black Door

From Goodreads:
Kamai was warned never to open the black door, but she didn't listen ...

Everyone has a soul. Some are beautiful gardens, others are frightening dungeons. Soulwalkers―like Kamai and her mother―can journey into other people's souls while they sleep.

But no matter where Kamai visits, she sees the black door. It follows her into every soul, and her mother has told her to never, ever open it.

When Kamai touches the door, it is warm and beating, like it has a pulse. When she puts her ear to it, she hears her own name whispered from the other side. And when tragedy strikes, Kamai does the unthinkable: she opens the door.

A.M. Strickland's imaginative dark fantasy features court intrigue and romance, a main character coming to terms with her asexuality, and twists and turns as a seductive mystery unfolds that endangers not just Kamai's own soul, but the entire kingdom...

My first review of Beyond the Black Door
My Review:
Oh man, I loved reading this book again! This world with Soulwalkers was so interesting, and I love Kamai, and her story as her world is rocked, and she finds a place for herself! Plus the ace rep was so great to read!

Kamai sees a black door in every soul that she walks in. Her mom told her not to open it, but when she does, well, it kickstarts another set of elements to the plot. Learning about her magic-and the history of it, on this island, was just so great!

I just got so frustrated with some of the characters that were surrounding her. Like her father, who only really took her in because he had to, not because he wanted to, and didn't treat her very well. Same goes for her "step-brother" since their parents didn't actually marry.

Seeing all the pieces come together again, yeah, that ending was so fantastic! And I loved where we left it, it was in a good place for these characters, with some tidbits, that, alongside knowing who they are, gave us an idea of what their future looks like!

Reading this book again was so great, and I can't wait to read more by A.M. Strickland!

Week 25 Reviews: Boyfriend Material, Husband Material

Luc O'Donnell is tangentially - and reluctantly - famous. His rock-star parents split when he was young, and the father he's never met spent the next 20 years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad's making a comeback, Luc's back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything.

To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice normal relationship...and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He's a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and someone who has never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words, he's perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately, apart from being gay, single, and really really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust settles. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened.

But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. And that's when you get used to someone...start falling for them...don't ever want to let them go.

Wanted:
One (very real) husband
Nowhere near perfect but desperately trying his best

In BOYFRIEND MATERIAL, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to fall in love, fell in love for real, dealt with heartbreak and disappointment and family and friends…and somehow figured out a way to make it work. Now it seems like everyone around them is getting married, and Luc's feeling the social pressure to propose. But it'll take more than four weddings, a funeral, and a bowl full of special curry to get these two from I don't know what I'm doing to I do.

Good thing Oliver is such perfect HUSBAND MATERIAL.

This Summer 2022, you're invited to the event(s) of the season.

My Review:
I had a fantastic time reading these books! I loved reading this story about one chaotic guy and a very precise guy, at first fake dating, but developing real feelings. It was just so good, and I loved reading about the pair of them!

That they get into this situation of fake dating is a bit hilarious, but it sucks that Luc had to go to these lengths because of his job and family. But I'm glad it happened, because it meant that he ended up spending all this time with Oliver, which I loved, they were so great together!

Traditionally, once a relationship is stable, the next step is marriage. and I loved all the shenanigans that happened as Luc and Oliver went down that road, after being surrounded by so many other weddings. Side note, I love their friend group so, so much!

I'm not sure if this series is over now or not. I really enjoyed where Husband Material left them, they're in a really good spot. But I wouldn't mind seeing more of their lives and what adventures that they might get into!

These were such great reads, and I can't wait to read more from Alexis Hall!

Week 25 Review: Godslayers

From Goodreads:
Godslayers--Zoe Hana Mikuta's high-octane sequel to Gearbreakers--is perfect for fans of Pacific Rim, Pierce Brown's Red Rising Saga, and Marie Lu's Legend series.

The only way to kill a god is from the inside...

The Gearbreakers struck a devastating blow against Godolia on Heavensday, but the cost of victory has been steep. Months later, the few rebels who've managed to escape the tyrannical empire's bloody retribution have fled to the mountains, hunted by the last Zenith--Godolia's only surviving leader.

Eris has been held prisoner since the attack on the capital city, which almost killed her. And she begins to wish it had when she discovers Sona--the girl she loves, the girl she would tear down cities for--also survived, only to be captured and Corrupted by the Zenith. The cybernetic brainwashing that Sona has forcibly undergone now has her believing herself a loyal soldier for Godolia, and Eris' mortal enemy.

With the rebellion shattered and Godolia moving forward with an insidious plan to begin inducting Badlands children into a new Windup Pilot program, the odds have never been more stacked against the Gearbreakers. Their last hope for victory will depend on whether Eris and Sona can somehow find their way back to each other from opposite sides of a war...

My Review:
I loved reading this book so much! I loved the first one, and I had to know how things would end! With that ending of the previous book, I didn't know how they'd get back together and help Sona out of her brainwashing. This book got into things so quickly!

I did feel like this book was slightly disjointed, because there were sections, where Sona is still brainwashed, to coming out of it, and then stuff with Godolia, so that was a bit strange. But I still really enjoyed the story!

Sometimes, the actions of Enyo just didn't make sense to me, and sometimes it didn't to the characters, either. Thought in the end, it didn't matte to much, given what he decided to do, though on the other hand, some of his actions did lead to their victory.

There were so many great moments in this book, with Sona and Eris together, and Jenny being her wild and inventive self. There were also some hard moments, like that one betrayal, and some of that ending was hard. But I loved where the story went!

This was such a great read and I can't wait to read more by Zoe Hana Mikuta!

Week 25 Review: The Charm Offensive, A Charmed Christmas

In this witty and heartwarming romantic comedy—reminiscent of Red, White & Royal Blue and One to Watch—an awkward tech wunderkind on a reality dating show goes off-script when sparks fly with his producer.

Dev Deshpande has always believed in fairy tales. So it's no wonder then that he's spent his career crafting them on the long-running reality dating show Ever After. As the most successful producer in the franchise's history, Dev always scripts the perfect love story for his contestants, even as his own love life crashes and burns. But then the show casts disgraced tech wunderkind Charlie Winshaw as its star.

Charlie is far from the romantic Prince Charming Ever After expects. He doesn't believe in true love, and only agreed to the show as a last-ditch effort to rehabilitate his image. In front of the cameras, he's a stiff, anxious mess with no idea how to date twenty women on national television. Behind the scenes, he's cold, awkward, and emotionally closed-off.

As Dev fights to get Charlie to connect with the contestants on a whirlwind, worldwide tour, they begin to open up to each other, and Charlie realizes he has better chemistry with Dev than with any of his female co-stars. But even reality TV has a script, and in order to find to happily ever after, they'll have to reconsider whose love story gets told.

A Charmed Christmas, a Charlie and Dev holiday short story.

My Review:
Oh, these were such great reads! I loved getting to know Dev and Charlie, who are very different people, Dev, who believes in that Prince Charming and happily Ever After, and Charlie, who needs to clean up his image, because apparently you can't be different. They were so cute together!

Charlie is very much not your typical bachelor on these dating shows. He's a geek, he's not an outgoing person, and social interaction is not to his taste (which is I can relate with!) He doesn't like basically everything that comes along with a dating show. But he's on it!

Watching the pair of them fall in love, when Dev was supposed to be helping Charlie fall in love with one of the female contestants, was so cute! That he was going on these practice dates with Dev, and these real ones with the ladies, and in these different locations, I couldn't get enough!

A Charmed Christmas, I'm so glad that we got this look into their lives, and their proposals, and how fitting it was for the both of them! It was just so darned cute to read! Plus seeing them in the holidays was so comfy and adorable!

Week 25 Reviews: The Brightest Fell, Of Things Unknown, Night and Silence, Suffer a Sea-Change, The Unkindest Tide, Hope is Swift, A Killing Frost, Shine in Pearl, When Sorrows Come, And With Reveling, Be the Serpent, Such Dangerous Seas

From Goodreads:
For once, everything in October "Toby" Daye's life seems to be going right. There have been no murders or declarations of war for her to deal with, and apart from the looming specter of her Fetch planning her bachelorette party, she’s had no real problems for days. Maybe things are getting better.

Maybe not.

Because suddenly Toby's mother, Amandine the Liar, appears on her doorstep and demands that Toby find her missing sister, August. But August has been missing for over a hundred years and there are no leads to follow. And Toby really doesn't owe her mother any favors.

Then Amandine starts taking hostages, and refusal ceases to be an option.

This is an April O'Leary Novella. In it, April, as well as her living mother Li Qin have finally come to terms with the need to deal with all of the dead left in the aftermath of the earlier events in Tamed Lightning. For this plan, they will need to call a certain Blood Worker by the name of October Daye to assist them.

From Goodreads:
The twelfth installment of the Hugo-nominated, New York Times-bestselling Toby Daye urban fantasy series!

Things are not okay.

In the aftermath of Amandine's latest betrayal, October "Toby" Daye's fragile self-made family is on the verge of coming apart at the seams. Jazz can't sleep, Sylvester doesn't want to see her, and worst of all, Tybalt has withdrawn from her entirely, retreating into the Court of Cats as he tries to recover from his abduction. Toby is floundering, unable to help the people she loves most heal. She needs a distraction. She needs a quest.

What she doesn't need is the abduction of her estranged human daughter, Gillian. What she doesn't need is to be accused of kidnapping her own child by her ex-boyfriend and his new wife, who seems to be harboring secrets of her own. There's no question of whether she'll take the case. The only question is whether she's emotionally prepared to survive it.

Signs of Faerie's involvement are everywhere, and it's going to take all Toby's nerve and all her allies to get her through this web of old secrets, older hatreds, and new deceits. If she can't find Gillian before time runs out, her own child will pay the price. One question remains:

Who in Faerie remembered Gillian existed? And what do they stand to gain? No matter how this ends, Toby's life will never be the same.

From Goodreads:
Follows Gillian's POV through some of the events of Night and Silence, and afterwards.

From Goodreads:
Hundreds of years ago, the Selkies made a deal with the sea witch: they would have the sea for as long as she allowed it, and when the time came, she would call in all their debts at once. Many people assumed that day would never come. Those people were wrong.

When the Luidaeg—October "Toby" Daye's oldest and most dangerous ally—tells her the time has come for the Selkies to fulfill their side of the bargain, and that Toby must be a part of the process, Toby can't refuse. Literally. The Selkies aren't the only ones in debt to the Luidaeg, and Toby has to pay what she owes like anyone else. They will travel to the fabled Duchy of Ships and call a convocation of the Selkies, telling them to come and meet the Luidaeg's price...or face the consequences.

Of course, nothing is that simple. When Dianda Lorden's brother appears to arrest Dianda for treason against the Undersea, when a Selkie woman is stripped of her skin and then murdered, when everything is falling apart, that's when Toby will have to answer the real question of the hour.

Is she going to sink? Or is she going to swim?

From Goodreads:
When October is informed that Simon Torquill—legally her father, due to Faerie's archaic marriage traditions—must be invited to her wedding or risk the ceremony throwing the Kingdom in the Mists into political turmoil, she finds herself setting out on a quest she was not yet prepared to undertake for the sake of her future.... and the man who represents her family's past.

Toby's getting married! Now in hardcover, the fifteenth novel of the Hugo-nominated, New York Times-bestselling October Daye urban fantasy series.

It's hard to be a hero. There's always something needing October "Toby" Daye's attention, and her own desires tend to fall by the wayside in favor of solving the Kingdom's problems. That includes the desire to marry her long-time suitor and current fiancé, Tybalt, San Francisco's King of Cats. She doesn't mean to keep delaying the wedding, it just sort of...happens. And that's why her closest friends have taken the choice out of her hands, ambushing her with a court wedding at the High Court in Toronto. Once the High King gets involved, there's not much even Toby can do to delay things...

...except for getting involved in stopping a plot to overthrow the High Throne itself, destabilizing the Westlands entirely, and keeping her from getting married through nothing more than the sheer volume of chaos it would cause. Can Toby save the Westlands and make it to her own wedding on time? Or is she going to have to choose one over the other?

Includes an all-new bonus novella!

Toby and Tybalt's wedding reception, and the blessing that they need to receive from their wedding guests.

From Goodreads:
October Daye is finally something she never expected to be: married. All the trials and turmoils and terrors of a hero's life have done very little to prepare her for the expectation that she will actually share her life with someone else, the good parts and the bad ones alike, not just allow them to dabble around the edges in the things she wants to share. But with an official break from hero duties from the Queen in the Mists, and her family wholly on board with this new version of "normal," she's doing her best to adjust.

It isn't always easy, but she's a hero, right? She's done harder.

Until an old friend and ally turns out to have been an enemy in disguise for this entire time, and October's brief respite turns into a battle for her life, her community, and everything she has ever believed to be true.

The debts of the Broken Ride are coming due, and whether she incurred them or not, she's going to be the one who has to pay.

My Review:
I wasn't planning on rereading these books. But I just read the 2 2023 October Daye releases, the joint story of Toby and Tybalt, and  I had to reread at least some of it. And I'm so glad that I did, because so much happens!

These are the books where thing have really gotten serious. It starts with Toby being forced to look for her sister that she's only recently known about her existence, and it goes until Titiana pokes her head up and causes trouble. These are game changers in the world, and it was so great to read!

I love how close that these characters have grown, the family that Toby has gathered around her. And how supportive and progressive they are. I love seeing Toby comment on how things are, how right or wrong it is, things that make commentary on life.

So there's a few things that I would really like to see. Like Toby creating something to replace Home, for changelings to have a safe place to go. I want to see if the theories that I agree with, that Marcia is Maeve, is correct or not. And I'm pretty sure we're going to see why Faerie needs Seers-I need to see why!

This series is just so fantastic, and I can't wait for more!
