Charlie Grant's older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can't wait for the first time in years, all four of her older siblings will be under one roof. Charlie is desperate for one last perfect weekend, before the house is sold and everything changes. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with longstanding crush Jesse Foster all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect.
The only problem? The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute disaster. There's the unexpected dog with a penchant for howling, house alarm that won't stop going off, and a papergirl with a grudge.
There are the relatives who aren't speaking, the (awful) girl her favorite brother brought home unannounced, and a missing tuxedo. Not to mention the neighbor who seems to be bent on sabotage and a storm that is bent on drenching everything. The justice of the peace is missing. The band will only play covers. The guests are all crazy. And the wedding planner's nephew is unexpectedly, distractedly cute.
Over the course of three ridiculously chaotic days, Charlie will learn more than she ever expected about the family she thought she knew by heart. And she'll realize that sometimes, trying to keep everything like it was in the past means missing out on the future.
My Review:
I loved reading this book! Sometimes I have a hard time with contemporaries, because it's about an even bag of the conflict being internal, emotional and such, then external. And yeah, while this book is a mix of both, the external, all the problems popping up, threatening the wedding, those were hilarious and I couldn't put it down!
I loved the fact that Charlie's mom had written a comic strip about a fictionalized version of her family. Charlie's grown up with it, and now that it's ending when others things are, like they've sold the house, and she's going to college soon, yeah, Charlie's putting a lot of emotional weight on the whole family being together for the wedding. (Minus her brother Mike, because of the whole situation over a year ago.)
This book takes place in the course of 3 days, mainly. The day before, the day of, and the day after, the wedding. And things are pretty hectic, because the wedding planner turned out to be horrible and had to be replaced, which kinda turned out to be a good thing, because it meant that she met Bill, as well as have all the problems fixed.
Over the course of this book, Charlie learns a few things. Like that even though she loves them, her family isn't perfect, and isn't the fictionalized version in the comic strip. And that was something she needed to learn, however hard it was. But they are still family, still loving and hilarious!
Yeah, this book was so freaking great, and I'm so glad that I found it (second hand and heavily discounted, whoot!) and that it's a signed first edition! So happy and lucky!
