Week 27 Review: The Beast is an Animal

From Goodreads:
A girl with a secret talent must save her village from the encroaching darkness in this haunting and deeply satisfying tale.

Alys was seven when the soul eaters came to her village.

These soul eaters, twin sisters who were abandoned by their father and slowly morphed into something not quite human, devour human souls. Alys, and all the other children, were spared—and they were sent to live in a neighboring village. There the devout people created a strict world where good and evil are as fundamental as the nursery rhymes children sing. Fear of the soul eaters—and of the Beast they believe guides them—rule village life. But the Beast is not what they think it is. And neither is Alys.

Inside, Alys feels connected to the soul eaters, and maybe even to the Beast itself. As she grows from a child to a teenager, she longs for the freedom of the forest. And she has a gift she can tell no one, for fear they will call her a witch. When disaster strikes, Alys finds herself on a journey to heal herself and her world. A journey that will take her through the darkest parts of the forest, where danger threatens her from the outside—and from within her own heart and soul.

My first review of The Beast is an Animal
My Review:
Yeah, it was so great to read this book! I just love this world and these characters, to rage at the unfairness of the situation that the kids were in. The writing was excellent, and I felt really connected with Alys and the threats that she was facing.

Alys fears that she's a bad person, because she's what they call a witch, and maybe a soul eater. And that fear is technically a good one, but not that she's a bad person. Because what she isn't necessarily bad, that's just what the town has taught her. And they're a bunch of zealot cowards.

That middle though! It's been a while since I read this book, so I didn't quite remember what happened, so when the journey mentioned in the synopsis happens, well, I just couldn't wait to see what would happen, I wanted to go along with her, and we did, yeah!

Honestly, I still don't quite understand how that ending worked. I know what happened, what we saw, but I don't know how it happened, what rules of the world that explain it. What did they do? I'm just a little bit confused!

I enjoyed reading this book so much, it was such a great read!

First Lines Friday #477, July 3rd

First Lines Friday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie of Precision Reviews. We encourage all of our fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

-Grab your current read(s)
-Share the first line(s)
-Include the title and author so that other FLF participants can add the book to their TBR Lists!

"Way back in the beginning, there were two sisters. They were born minutes apart, each with a velvet coat of black hair on the top of her perfect head. The mother had labored for two full days, and it was a miracle she survived. At least hourly the midwife feared she'd lose the mother and the babies with her. But the girls were born with lusty cries, and the mother wept with relief." -The Beast is an Animal by Peternelle van Arsdale

Well, that's tense, but ultimately happy. I wonder how it's going to go wrong!

Week 22 Review: The Beast Is an Animal

My Review:
This book was so fantastic! It was dark and thrilling, and I enjoyed reading it so much! The world was so detailed, and I really enjoyed getting to know Alys and the others! Just a really amazing book! I mean, come on, it's wonderful!

We first get the story of the twins-and it's not very pleasant. The times were very superstitious, and having twins who were mirrors of the other, well, that's beyond the acceptance levels of community. The father was grateful that they weren't killed-but being sent to the forest was kinda like a death sentence. And yeah, their dad became an asshole parent!

I enjoyed getting to know Alys. She had her secrets, and she's had a fairly tough life. She was interesting to read about, and boy, did she have a story to tell! She was pretty darned smart, and yeah, I loved reading about her!

A lot happens in this book. It's a stand alone, and it flows so well! Things just kept happening, and learning more and more, and then it was over, and I was like, it can't end! Because while it ended in a great place, I just want more!

Loved reading this book, it was incredible!
