Flame in the Dark: Review and Excerpt

From Goodreads:
Set in the same world as Faith Hunter's New York Times bestselling Jane Yellowrock novels, the third, thrilling Soulwood novel stars Nell Ingram, who draws her powers from deep within the earth.

Nell Ingram has always known she was different. Since she was a child, she's been able to feel and channel ancient powers from deep within the earth. When she met Jane Yellowrock, her entire life changed, and she was recruited into PsyLED—the Homeland Security division that polices paranormals. But now her newly formed unit is about to take on its toughest case yet.

A powerful senator barely survives an assassination attempt that leaves many others dead—and the house he was visiting burns to the ground. Invisible to security cameras, the assassin literally disappears, and Nell's team is called in. As they track a killer they know is more—or less—than human, they unravel a web of dark intrigue and malevolent motives that tests them to their limits and beyond.

My Review:
Yeah, another book in this series! I really hope we get a 4th one*, because I'm really enjoying this series and these characters! The mysteries are intriguing, and this world, I just absolutely love being in it!

I really enjoy being in Nell's head. She has a different way at looking at things, and I enjoy seeing things how she does! One great thing for this book, is we learn more about what she is, and how to help avoid her sister facing a similar fate by learning from her mistakes, so that was really awesome!

The mystery in this book was really intriguing! That the guy basically disappeared, that he left a trail of dying things in his wake, it doesn't add up to anything good! This family just doesn't have any luck, having all this death and destruction follow them! The mystery was a fantastic element of this book, and I absolutely loved it! We got a bit more of this world and the Arcinels, so that was just great!

I really enjoyed how things ended, because facing the bad guy wasn't as close to the end as other books! There was one plotline that's been carried across all 3 books, and it's kinda a two-parter-the church guy she feed to her land, and the vampire tree. And I loved how she dealt with both! Oh, and her relationship with Occam, it takes a definite turn to somewhere it's been hinting since the beginning! It made the ending so satisfying!

This was such a great book, and I can't wait for Nell's next adventure, and Jane's next one, too!

*I knew this, have since January, but I forgot, that Soulwood is going to be a 5 book series at least! Yeah!

"Ten-ninety-ones are to stay in place until CSI and the MEs are finished."

"Medical Examiners are here?"

"I know, right? Weird."

Ten-ninety-ones were dead bodies, in Knoxville PD radio codes. The stink of gunfire and burned hair and scorched building fouled the air. I looked around for fire trucks and decided they trucks must have pulled up to the restaurant from the back, from the street on the other side. EMS units were lined up in the roadway, uniformed officers standing guard at the door to the restaurant, visible in the glaring headlights. Heavily armed SWAT officers were inside and out. Shadows flickered on the walls and the asphalt, oversized, bulked, armed.

"Over here." The uniformed cop jerked on my sleeve, pulling me against a marked vehicle. She pointed to a black limo across the street. "In that one." It wasn't a long limo, but a short one. The vehicle looked heavy, as if armored. "Don't expect me to get any closer to the fangheads," she said.

"I like the blood in my veins where it belongs. Maintain cover position until we clear the street and the buildings."

"Thanks," I said, "and I feel the same way about vampires. But you don't say no to Ming of Glass."

Snared: Review and Excerpt

From Goodreads:
The sixteenth book in the New York Times bestselling Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series that RT Book Reviews calls, "An extraordinary series…[containing] one of the most intriguing heroines in the genre."

If you don’t know Gin "the Spider" Blanco, you don't know dangerous female heroines.

Irony 101—The Spider herself snared in someone else's web…

Another week, another few clues trickling in about the Circle, the mysterious group that supposedly runs the city's underworld. Gathering intel on my hidden enemies is a painstaking process, but a more immediate mystery has popped up on my radar: a missing girl.

My search for the girl begins on the mean streets of Ashland, but with all the killers and crooks in this city, I'm not holding out much hope that she's still alive.

A series of clues leads me down an increasingly dark, dangerous path, and I realize that the missing girl is really just the first thread in this web of evil. As an assassin, I'm used to facing down the worst of the worst, but nothing prepares me for this new, terrifying enemy—one who strikes from the shadows and is determined to make me the next victim.

My Review:
I just absolutely loved reading this book! This series has been so incredible, and Gin faces a lot in this book! She's facing off against the Circle, except there's more than meets the eye! This book was so complicated and intricate!

Gin knows more about the Circle now, she's been looking into them for a little while now. So when she learns about this missing girl, it was almost like a fast forward button was pushed, so many things were going on!

In this book, we learn more about Hugh Tucker. And not all of it was easy for Gin to learn, not how she learned it, but what she learned! Because it showed him to be much more complicated than just the enforcer bad guy of the Circle.

Of course, the revelations didn't stop until the book ended! That ending packed a heck of a doozy, from how Elissa and her situation was resolved, to Hugh Tucker and the Circle. It was just a fantastic ending, and I can't wait to see where things will go from there!

Such an amazing book, and I can't wait to read more!

Excerpt:
Still, I tensed as the guard wandered closer and closer to my position. I was standing at the corner of a gray stone house, set in the very back corner of the yard, several hundred feet from the main mansion. Trees clustered all around the house, their branches arching over the black slate roof and making the shadows here particularly dark, giving me the perfect hiding spot to watch and wait out the guard.

No doubt the man who lived in the mansion charitably referred to this house as a caretaker’s cottage, or something else equally dismissive, even though the house was almost large enough to be its own separate mansion. Even Finnegan Lane, my foster brother, would have been impressed by the spacious rooms and expensive, antique furniture that I’d glimpsed through the windows when I’d been sneaking around the house and getting into position—

“So are you actually going to break into the mansion or are we just going to stand around out here all night in the dark?” a low, snide voice murmured in my ear.

Speak of the devil, and he will annoy you.

I looked to my right. Fifty feet away, a tall, man-shaped shadow hovered at the edge of the tree line. Like me, Finn was dressed all in black, although I could just make out the glimmer of his eyes, like a cat’s in the darkness.

“I’m waiting for the guard to turn around and go back in the other direction,” I hissed. “As you can bloody well see for yourself.”

The transmitter in my ear crackled from the force of Finn’s snort. “Mr. Cell Phone Video Game?” He snorted again. “Please. You could do naked cartwheels across the lawn right in front of him, and he still wouldn’t notice.”

Heart of Stone: Book Blitz

From Goodreads:
A CHILD FATED TO START A WAR.

A LOVE SHE'LL RISK EVERYTHING TO PROTECT.

Set in New 2, a dangerous and lush alternate New Orleans, the fourth book in Keaton's Gods & Monsters series, finds the God-killer Ari and Mistborn Sebastian on the hunt for Archer, infant son of Athena, a child fated to bring about the Blood Wars, the ultimate showdown between the gods and the monsters they created, a war that will trap mankind in the middle of a destructive conflict thousands of years in the making.

As Ari and Sebastian attempt to rescue the child, forces pull them apart, sending Sebastian on a perilous journey to the desert sands of Egypt and into the lair of a dark, enthralling entity, and Ari to the Halls of Olympus and, darker still, the very heart of the Underworld where Death awaits with a bargain that brings Ari's worst nightmares into sharp and heart wrenching focus.

Excerpt:
Excerpt from a scene featuring Sebastian in HEART OF STONE by Kelly Keaton

The Dark Mother's power crept over him like a heavy black sludge, sinking into his pores, snaking around the inside of his skull and into his brain, eating away his will and self control.

"Come closer," she said.

God, that voice . . . her lure, her scent, her unbelievable ability to inspire in him devotion, loyalty, and desire was so strong he wanted to weep.

Mine.

She was his and he'd kill anyone who got close to her. The magnitude of that thought, the utter faith and strength of it made him stumble back and shake his head. He blinked hard. Sweat beaded on his skin. He saw a flash of surprise in Phillip's gaze. Saw the advisor's brows knit with worry.

Yeah, he was pretty sure not many vamps stepped back when the Dark Mother said come closer.

As he stayed there, shaking from the weight of her lure, trying to regain control and force her dirty drug from his system, he saw her creepy eyes light with curiosity. No, they sparked, ignited. She stilled like the predator she was. Her hands gripped the sides of her cold throne and she leaned forward slightly. Eagerly.

And then she was on him, slamming into him so hard he flew back with her clutched to him, her nails digging into his arms as he hit the ground hard. Pain exploded through his neck as she sank long, ancient fangs into his skin and muscle and vein.

She angled his head to the side, holding it down hard against the floor, her palm flat against his forehead, her nails ripping into his scalp and skin as she drank.

Her presence, her power suffocated him. It was too much. He was overdosing. Losing it. She was sucking him dry. Every tug of her mouth and every movement she made against his skin elicited a bewildering mix of wild need and deep stomach-clenching disgust.

Everything in him fought. He squirmed under her, fighting to be free, yet his hands were gripping her hips tightly, pulling her closer.

His delirious gaze flew to her court as they watched in total shock.

No one was going to save him. He was alone on a sinking ship. And his fate was sealed. Just as it had been sealed with Athena's vampire servant Zaria, who'd tortured him relentlessly. Never a chance, never a choice. Neither one gave him a choice. He'd killed Zaria, killed her good. He ground his hips against the Dark Mother. Pleasure shot through him. He'd kill her, too, kill her dead and good.

Her hair brushed over his face. It smelled so good and yet in another instant it reeked of sweat, blood, and years of oil and dirt.

Jesus. What was on him? Eating him alive...

A shot of fear plugged him in the heart and he lurched against her, all his faculties returning in a blinding moment of reality. He screamed, a guttural roar, as if fear itself had reached down and yanked it out of the deepest part of him.

And then he was fading again, sinking, being sucked down into the vortex of a beautiful lie.

She was all lies.

And he loved her so much.

Such was the power of his goddess, his Dark Mother.

He closed his eyes and let his muscles go slack, accepting her love.

The Betrayal: Review and Excerpt

From Goodreads:
One brother races against time to save the other before it's too late. When Matt has a dream, it sends two brothers on a hunt for a cave. Matt doesn't know why they have to go there; he just knows they have to go. When they arrive, Matt finds out that the vision turns out to be a trap. A Darkness like no other wants to control Matt and kill Zack. When a demon asks Zack a question, "How far will you go to save your brother," Zack replies, "As far as I have to." Now something like they've never faced before is on a deadly mission to destroy everything the brothers hold dear and if they are not careful, neither of them will be able to escape.

My Review:
This was a really fantastic book! Though I don't know why Matt would listen to a dream, especially when it has such bad consequences! But I think that the lesson was learned by the end, after all that they went through!

I don't think most siblings have as close a relationship as these two did. Because while they might love each other, it's something more then that, they know each other, it's not a love that is forced, just because you're family, but something more.

There were a few problems with this book. Like, while it says that it's a series, that it's the first book, things didn't feel new, they felt more from a middle of a series then anything else. And the fact that it seemed like everything that was happening to them was pretty similar.

In a way, I could see some similarities to the TV supernatural, about two brothers, and the supernatural stuff, but this is a book, and not a TV show, and yeah, all the other differences. But there was that similarity that I liked!

Really awesome book, I enjoyed it a lot! Great story about brothers!

Excerpt:
He roamed through the cave, listening to the sounds around him. Water dripped into an underground pool further down, the drops spaced several seconds apart and the splash echoing off the rocks. Sand and pebbles crunched under his feet, and wind whistled across the cave opening, all of it familiar. He’d walked that cave a million times for a million reasons. His domain — where he drew his strength — also became his weakness at times, for the cave was alive.

His name, Alanya, meant The Destroyer. He wandered the ages, seeking to slaughter people who held special gifts. He fed on them for their strength and power, each special power offering a distinctive flavor. Their cries resonated in the cave’s memory; their blood splattered on its walls and drenched its floors. If he closed his eyes and concentrated, he could still smell the coppery tang.

Strolling to the mouth of the cave, he looked at but didn't see the forest. His mind seethed in his hatred for the brothers Zachariah and Matthew McCannon.

Matt Archer: Monster Hunter, Matt Archer: Monster Summer: Review, Giveaway, and Excerpt

From Goodreads:
Fourteen-year-old Matt Archer spends his days studying Algebra, hanging out with his best friend and crushing on the Goddess of Greenhill High, Ella Mitchell. To be honest, he thinks his life is pretty lame until he discovers something terrifying on a weekend camping trip at the local state park.

Monsters are real. And living in his backyard.

But that's not the half of it. After Matt is forced to kill a strange creature to save his uncle, he finds out that the weird knife he took from his uncle's bag has a secret, one that will change Matt's life. The knife was designed with one purpose: to hunt monsters. And it's chosen Matt as its wielder.

Now Matt's part of a world he didn't know existed, working with a covert military unit dedicated to eliminating walking nightmares. Faced with a prophecy about a looming dark war, Matt soon realizes his upcoming Algebra test is the least of his worries.

His new double life leaves Matt wondering which is tougher: hunting monsters or asking Ella Mitchell for a date?

From Goodreads:
In this companion short-story to Matt Archer: Monster Hunter, fifteen-year-old Matt Archer finds himself in the Australian Outback on the trail of his latest targets...and hunting hyper-intelligent, mutated Dingoes is not his idea of a great summer vacation.

Making things more complicated, Matt's Uncle Mike--aka Major Tannen--is his C.O. for this mission. To Matt's consternation, the major's new fiancée, Captain Julie Hunter, is also along for the trip.

When Captain Hunter disappears during a routine scouting trip, it's up to Matt to help his uncle find her before it's too late.

My Review:
I really enjoyed this book, Monster Hunter, that I found the novella and added it to my post. Added work, but this series is worth it, because I really, really, really enjoyed reading about Matt Archer! The world was just fantastic, and the plot idea was really original, and the writing was just so good, this book just flew by, and yeah, I just really, really, really, really, really enjoyed reading this book, and then the novella!

The whole "special monster hunting knife" idea is pretty darn original to me, and then adding the way different monsters, and then adding the military, well, that just added great action, and a great number of ways for conflict, especially since Matt's 14 and having his 15th birthday, so of course he has a pretty protective family. I loved his sister, and that she wore down the guy in 19 hours. So hilarious!

The romance plotline, well, that was very cute, and sweet, with bumbling, and monster hunting getting in the way, and then helping. And it was just sweet the way that they slowly got together, from fighting about her boyfriend, to helping her heal, and such, and then her figuring out what he does...fantastic!

And then there's the short story, which picks up a month after MH, and we get to see Uncle Mike and Captain Hunter interact, and who they were as a couple, after finding out that she exists at the end of MH. Plus, we get all sorts of tidbits to advance the plot, like advanced talking monsters (and in English, too, which was really nice, because I have a very basic, basic Spanish vocab) and an up coming move. So yeah, this was a great novella!

I just really enjoyed this series, it was funny, and it was interesting, and it was entertaining, and what more can you ask for a book?

Excerpts:
Before I had a chance to dig out some marshmallows for s’mores, the air turned sharp and the wind gusted cold into the campfire, sending up sparks. Uncle Mike rose to his feet, with an intense, alert expression I’d never seen before—like he could eat a brick and enjoy the crunch.

Without looking at me, he said, “Weather’s changing; best to get inside the tent, where it’s warmer.”

With nothing else to do, we packed it in for the night. Mike didn’t allow me to bring a cell phone or anything else electronic on our trips. I could’ve played cards or something, but being outside always made me tired and I went to sleep early because, yes, I’m just that exciting. On the plus side, I had the craziest dream: Ella Mitchell ditched her boyfriend for me. That’s not weird—that’s plain, old wishful thinking. The weird part was that she hopped up on stage during assembly and stole the microphone from Principal Stevens to do it. Then I ran down the aisle to thunderous applause, swept her in my arms and….

“Get back!” Mike yelled.

I sat up in surprise to see shadows moving across the tent’s walls. One shadow was Mike's, distorted in the bright moonlight. The other…heck if I knew what it was. Bulky, taller than Mike by a long shot, it grunted and snorted like an angry pig. Was it a bear? I rubbed my eyes and squinted. No, definitely not a bear. The thing was much too big and shuffled along on two legs.

When it roared, it didn’t sound like any animal I’d ever heard, but more like a bulldozer’s engine. Every hair on my scalp stood up. Whatever this thing was, it wasn’t natural.

*A Few Lines Later after Matt catches whatever it is's attention*
I watched the creature’s shadow get bigger and bigger as it headed my way. It didn’t creep. It didn’t barrel toward me. It strolled, like it wasn’t the least bit worried about what it would find inside the tent. Terrified or not, something about its arrogance filled me with cold fury. My muscles burned and my heart beat double-time; I probably didn't have a prayer, but I wasn't going down without a fight. I sure as hell wasn’t going to sit by and let this thing kill my uncle.

Uncle Mike usually brought a rifle with him, just in case we met a bear, and he’d made sure I could use it. I dug around in our bags, throwing clothes everywhere, but the rifle wasn’t in the tent. The only thing I came up with was a wicked-looking knife with a smooth bone handle. I pulled it out of the leather sheath, shocked by its weight. It was much heavier than it looked and my fingers buzzed, like the knife was vibrating in my hand. I must’ve been shaking really hard.

I gripped the handle of the knife, hoping I didn’t end up stabbing myself by accident. The blade was longer than most hunting-knives I’d ever used—maybe eight or nine inches—and honed to a sharp edge. I had no idea where Mike would buy something like this, but one thing was for sure: no one would want to be on the receiving end of this weapon. It looked like it could gut a buffalo.

The creature walked the perimeter of the tent, brushing up against the nylon, and a rancid scent wafted through the walls. I gagged and threw up a little in my mouth. The stench reminded me of how the vent in my room smelled after my guinea pig got loose and bought the farm in the air duct. Seriously freaked out, I held still, clutching the knife so hard my knuckles ached. I was planning to let the beast stalk around outside as long as it wanted. One thing Mike taught me during paintball was to make your target do the work. If you could be patient, you’d get the better strike, and I’d only have one shot.

The beast paused and I took a gulp of cold air, knowing I wouldn’t have to wait much longer. With a blur of claws, dark fur and sharp teeth, the thing crashed into the tent, ripping the nylon with one slash. I didn’t have time to think or even get a good look at it. When it pounced on top of me, I thrust the blade into its stomach and twisted. The handle burned in my hand, glowing a faint green.

The beast howled and struggled against me, until I thought I’d drown in the reek of its fur. Somehow, I squirmed out from underneath it just before it collapsed on the floor of the tent. Once it was down, I stabbed it in the back, over and over, swearing at the top of my lungs. Some kind of red-rage took control, and I didn’t stop slashing until the thing shuddered and was still.

In the quiet, I fell to my knees, shaking all over.

When I could finally breathe without wheezing, I gathered up the last shreds of my courage and found our lantern in the wreckage. Scared pissless or not, I wanted to see what attacked me. Squaring my shoulders, I turned on the light.

Then bit my own tongue trying to hold back a scream.

The creature was misshapen, with a huge head, pointy ears and narrow snout, and it had to be at least eight feet tall. Teeth like tusks protruded from its lower jaw. It had brown fur like a grizzly’s and its paws looked like a bear’s too, except bigger, with those brutal, velociraptor claws. If that wasn’t weird enough, the thing’s arms and legs were long, like a man’s. It was like some mad scientist threw a bunch of DNA into a blender and this is what came out.

What the heck could it be? Was it some kind of alien? A scientific experiment gone horribly wrong? Did we have a Dr. Frankenstein living in Billings? Seriously, the creature looked like a resurrected Wookiee made from spare parts.

Utterly creeped out, I pulled the knife out of the beast’s back and dropped it on the ground. My hands had blood on them, dark stains glistening in the moonlight, and now that I wasn’t fighting for my life, I shivered, half-freezing and clueless about what to do next.

The Twilight Saint: Review

From Goodreads:
In a land torn apart by violence, the fragile peace of the world lays in the hands of one tattered warrior.

It has been thousands of years since the fall of the great nations and the tribes that remain in the ashes of the fallen must fight to survive in the shadows. In this desperate landscape, Ailive has spent her entire life fighting for the honor of her tribe and she has grown weary of war. When Ailive sees a chance to escape her fate, she flees into a chaotic landscape where death and darkness lurk behind every friendly face until she finds refuge in the peaceful city at the center of her world. In this city, Ailive finds everything she's ever dreamt of, but news of a strange prophet from the South brings whispers of war to Ailive's peaceful home. Now Ailive alone can stop the genocide of an entire tribe of people. Ailive alone holds the key to bringing peace to the world and destroying the monstrous man whom she once loved, if she can only gain the courage to pick up her sword again and make herself fulfill the destiny she's fought her entire life.

My Review:
Reading this book was a bit weird. It's a pretty big book, and there was a lot going on. It also takes place over a long period of time, which just made things feel a bit...hazy, out of focus, that it was hard to believe that this was just one person's life, you know, that they had this much going on!

I liked this book a lot! I had a bit of trouble reading it, the font was pretty small on my reader, but the story was pretty engrossing, so I ignored the strain on my eyeballs, because I had to know what was going to happen next, because I wanted to know!

It seems like Ailive doesn't have much luck! There were a lot of not so nice things that happened to her, and yeah, she makes the best choices for her. But I wouldn't want to live in this world, it's not nice to people!

This is the first book in the series. And the second book stars her daughter, from the ending. So yeah, with that ending, and knowing that her sacrifice in the end, isn't going to end up doing any good, sucks, but without conflict, books wouldn't be entertaining!

Yeah, this was a pretty great book, and I enjoyed it a lot, and I'm going to have to read the sequel!

Excerpt:
I walk the way of the storm. It is all I have ever known. In the haze of early childhood memories, there exists brief moments before the storm, but now it has consumed everything. Every piece of me has been lost and all I can remember is fire and smoke and the remains of old dreams singed by death.  Even as I sat high above the city, looking down on the magnificent beauty of my tribe, the smell of death lingered. Our tribe’s city was alive, vibrant, and prosperous, but to me it was nothing.

I sat perched on top of the highest tower of the karash, looking down on what most people in our tribe would call the real world. I was a Xenderian. I was part of the most powerful tribe of its time. I was more than part of it, I was the sword that cut the path to its glory. I was a karake. I was born to fight for the glory of my people, but as I looked through the icy air, I felt dead inside. My scars were long and my nightmares haunted my every moment.

The Last Degree: Review and Excerpt

From Goodreads:
The Last Degree is a fictionalized account of how Freemasons and other secret societies set up the world for takeover. Ancient writings foretell a 'Shining One' who emerges as the world's prophet. A murder of a Most Worshipful mason resembles a secret oath. A cop gets too close to solving the crime. Paranoid preppers go underground, preparing for war.

Headlines such as the Norway massacre, meltdown of the European Union, unscrupulous media, animal die-offs, Middle Eastern unrest, and U.S. shrinking power make the plot relevant to present day.

My Review
:
So reading this book, it was a little scary. Just the synopsis? The "world for takeover" thing sounds ominous! And yeah, secret societies, as in plural? Doesn't really sound good for the common person! And yeah, it just played out so well!

I have a bit of a beef with the second paragraph of the synopsis, myself. Because news stories, well, most of the time, they're only relevant for a short period of time. The stuff happening in this book, they ranged from mid, to upper, levels of those events, so while up for longer, yeah.

Typically in literature, the Masons are portrayed as the good guys. And in this book, they weren't. And this change, I'm a bit iffy on. It's unique, but it's not a take that I want to think about, you know. Because if they have that much history and people knowing about them, well, yeah.

I enjoyed how it ended, it made sense, and it was really great, bringing everything in, and yeah, it was a pretty good ending! This book wasn't really for me, there were little bits, here and there, and some pretty big bits, that just clashed with me!

I did enjoy this book a lot, it just wasn't the one for me! It will be for others, I know it!

Excerpt:
Dwight took off his crown, signifying he was no longer playing King Solomon.

“Sacrifice is expected for ones that you love.  Do you love me?” Dwight shouted.  “Then bow down before me and offer praise!”

Everyone knelt and laid their head down to the floor, chanting ‘Most Worshipful,

Most Worshipful’ several times before Dwight commanded them to get up.

In a manic energetic state, Dwight vociferated, “Et vitam impendere vero!”  All repeated, with the three new pledges joining in.  Minutes later, he began to calm down.  “To sacrifice life for truth – that is what we must always do!  You must trust me as your Most Worshipful and sacrifice at my command!  Are you prepared to do this?”  All three pledges nodded.

Dwight pulled the content baby out of Arthur’s arms and threw it high into the air.  As the baby began to descend, Dwight took his sword and hacked through its neck, decapitating it before it hit the floor.  Only the three pledges shrieked in horror.  He sinisterly smiled as he picked up the head and body, revealing it was only a doll.

“Don’t believe with your eyes, but believe with your knowledge.  We are his chosen and will soon be exalted.”

The three men looked down at their hands and tried not to scream.  They were covered in blood.

“Sacrifice, my brothers, sacrifice.  I will teach you well.  You are all Chiefs of the Tabernacle!  Let us go and celebrate!” Dwight gleamed.

Wish I Could Have Said Goodbye: First Chapter and Giveaway

From Goodreads:
Before my older sister Francesca died, I worked at the bakery and wrote songs, but now I write lists. Lists like ten reasons why it's my fault Francesca's dead, or five reasons why I should try and win Howie back, or one reason why I need to stop lying to everyone, including myself.

Wish I Could Have Said Goodbye is an extraordinary novel about one family's struggle to make sense of their world after losing a family member to addiction. Through sixteen-year-old Carmella's eyes, we witness the courage and strength it takes to overcome the consequences of grief, guilt and co-dependency. With conviction and determination, Carmella shows us what can happen when we're open to love, feel the pain of our loss, and find the courage to accept the truth of our lives.

First Chapter:
October
I hug Francesca’s purse tight against my chest and rest my head against the corner of my closet. This is me since my big sister died four weeks ago. Francesca was six years older than me, and at twenty-three she became one of those people you read about in the tabloids, only she wasn’t an actor in Hollywood. She was my big sister who accidentally overdosed at her own party and now she’s not here to help me get over the fact I let her down, or to give me one reason why I should keep on living since my universe exploded and turned to dust.

I close my eyes and make a list, the kind Francesca and I would make when the lights were out and we were supposed to be sleeping.

Why I should live the rest of my life in my closet
1. I don’t have to talk to anyone.
2. I don’t have to listen to Mom and Dad fight.
3. I don’t have to face the rest of my life without my big sister.

Francesca and I had a pact to keep the lists just between us and we swore each other to secrecy before we made our first one. When Francesca went to college and was home for a break or a visit, we didn’t make many lists.  And then when she graduated, the lists stopped. I forgot all about the lists until I found one in her purse the night she died. It was her Monday to do list.

“Carmella?” My mother taps on the door. “Could you—?”

I slide the closet door open and squint up at my mother.

“We need you to come out. Your father’s got his coat on. He’s waiting.”

“I’m not going.”

“Carmella, don’t do this.” She pushes up the sleeves of her burnt orange pullover and folds her arms in front of her. “We need you.”

I want to tell Mom I can’t reduce my big sister’s life to twelve boxes and stuff them underneath the steps of my parents’ basement. But I won’t say what I’m thinking. I don’t want to make things worse for her and Dad.

My mother’s eyes are a million miles away. They’ve been like that ever since we got the news. “I know this is hard, Carmella, but Father Carlucci says packing up her things and moving her out of the apartment will help us start to heal.”

“What if I don’t want to move her things out of there? I want everything to stay the same.”

“Please, I don’t have the energy to fight.” Mom’s hair is tucked behind her ears, all messy, and her make up is rubbed off of her puffy eyes.

“Fine.” I set Francesca’s purse down on top of my red Converse shoes and drag myself towards the steps.

When I get into the kitchen, Mom hands me my coat.

My father’s pacing in front of the sink, crunching on corn chips. The veins in the side of his head pop out while he chews.

Mom grabs her purse from the scratched up wooden kitchen table they’ve been talking about replacing since Francesca started middle school.

“The owners from Lincoln Distributors sent flowers to the office Friday. How did they find out?” Mom asks.

My father stops in front of the door and rubs his forehead with his left hand. “I don’t know. Obviously, someone at the office told them. We never should have let the truth get past the family.”

“What are you talking about?” Mom squeezes the strap of her black leather purse tight.

“Yesterday, Mary at Davenport Motor Works asked what happened to Francesca. I told her she died of a fatal arrhythmia. From here on in, if anyone asks, that’s the story. And when you go back to school, you tell everyone the same thing.” He points to me.

“But most of them know what happened.” I zip my jacket.

“Not all of them. Tell Anna and your other friends to keep quiet too.”

Dad doesn’t know I haven’t spoken to anyone but Anna in the last year. My only friends lately were Francesca and Donny. Mom and Dad don’t know much about me at all now. When Francesca started having problems in middle school, I disappeared.

“You lied? You told a customer our daughter died from a fatal heart condition?” Mom swipes her hair behind her ear.

“Gina, our daughter died at a party where kids were doing drugs. People see that as a reflection on us. Since my father passed away and I took over the business two years ago, I’ve been working my ass off. I don’t want anything to jeopardize our reputation and I don’t want all my hard work to go to hell.”

My mother’s eyes glass over, her face drops like all her muscles turned into water and poured out.

“Joe, this is our daughter. How can you talk like this? People will understand. It was an accident.”

“This type of shit only happens to kids who are on drugs. Francesca was in the wrong place at the wrong time, that’s all. If she didn’t move in with that asshole Donny, she’d be alive right now.” My father stabs his finger in the air.

“I don’t believe this. So when I talk to people at work, I’m supposed to lie about how my daughter died?” My mother’s eyes glass over.

“Say it was a heart thing and you don’t want to talk about it. People won’t push. And that goes for you too.” My dad plucks his keys out of his coat pocket. “Let’s go.”
***
The three of us head up the creaky steps to Donny and Francesca’s third floor apartment. We had to walk two blocks struggling to hold onto the flattened boxes and packing tape. Parking on city streets is always a pain, especially on Saturdays when everyone is home from work. Most people work Monday through Friday in this neighborhood, except for Francesca and Donny.

Donny works weekends at the bar down the street. That’s how they got this apartment. A year ago, Donny met a guy who was transferred to China for a four-year assignment and needed to rent out his top floor condo in a cool brownstone building. Francesca was so excited; she thought they got lucky. The place was only a few blocks from the famous Second City Theatre in Chicago. Francesca thought she was going to move in here and get her life back on track.

Francesca worked at different restaurants for a while, but last summer she didn’t work at all. Around middle of August, she stopped returning my calls. When she finally called me back it was the first week in September to ask me to go to an AA meeting with her. It was a week before she died and the last time I ever heard her voice.

Dad sets his stack of boxes down and knocks. Mom starts to cry. She pulls a tissue out of her purse. She hands one to me, but I’m not gonna cry. I’m gonna be strong for Mom and Dad because that’s what families do for each other.

Donny opens the door and we get a whiff of rotten food like moldy cheese. We haven’t seen him since the funeral.

“Hi,” Donny says. He combs his messy dishwater blond hair with his fingers, like he just woke up. His green T-shirt is all wrinkled.

“C’mon in.” He steps back and holds out his hand. “Hey, sis.” He smiles.

“Hi.” I almost walk towards the kitchen, but I stop myself. Francesca loved to cook. I kept her company in the kitchen while she made stuff. They were always broke, so she cooked a lot of pasta.
Everywhere I look I see Francesca. Like her favorite fake painting of a sunrise on the beach she bought from a guy on the street for ten bucks when she first moved in with Donny. Francesca and I dreamed of living near the ocean, where the air is always warm and people are more relaxed. She was sure the painting meant good luck for her. I run my finger along the tacky gold frame.

“We were supposed to be awesome career women, get married, have kids and live next door to each other, two blocks from the beach,” I whisper. “That was our plan.”

I remember thinking how much I liked Donny and was so happy for Francesca. We were both sure her life was going to finally get better.

Donny leads us into the bedroom.

He points to the closet. “I boxed up her shoes, just the hanging stuff needs to be done.”

I think I might puke. I push past my parents, who are stiff like statues. I run straight to the bathroom where Francesca and I hung out when we wanted to talk in secret. I close and lock the door, taking my usual seat on the side of the tub, staring at the toilet where Francesca parked her foot as she blew cigarette smoke out the tiny frosted paned window. I rock back and forth and howl into my sleeve.
I bend down and run my fingers across the tiny tiles on the floor. I imagine her lying here, taking her last breaths, all alone. I grab my chest. I wish she hadn’t died in here alone. I wish I could have been with her, to hold her hand or to hug her. I wish I could have said goodbye.

“Carmella.” My mother knocks on the door. “Are you okay?”

I stand up and turn the cold water on full blast. “I’m fine,” my voice cracks. I clear my throat. “I’ll be right out.”

I open the door, and I hear Dad shout. “How can you live with yourself? This is all your fault.”
“Don’t go blaming me. All I did was try and love her,” Donny stomps out of the apartment, the door slamming behind him.

I walk into the bedroom. My father is mumbling over the high-pitched scream of the packing tape as he seals the top of a box.

Mom sniffles as she takes Francesca’s clothes off the hangers, folds them and puts them carefully in the box on the floor next to her.

Dad stands in the middle of the room, staring at the dresser, the tape dispenser dangling from his right hand.

“Where’s Donny?” I ask.

Mom turns towards me. “He left. He shouldn’t be here.” She folds Francesca’s blue and white plaid shirt.

“Wait,” I say. “Can I have that one?”

Mom clutches the shirt. “This old thing? Why would you want this?”

“Because. It was her favorite.”

Mom passes me the shirt. “Okay.” She shakes her head.

Holding it up to my nose, I smell Francesca and for a tiny fraction of a second, I get her back.

I put the shirt down next to my purse on the bed. “What should I do?”

Dad hands me a small box. “Donny says there’s a few things out there.”

I take the box from him and walk into the kitchen, pretending she’ll be standing at the sink, excited to see me as usual, throwing her arms around me in one of her over-the-top hugs.

I turn my head. There’s a small magnet on the side of the fridge in the shape of an old potbelly stove with red letters that say “Francesca’s Kitchen” across the belly. Donny bought it for her and she loved the stupid thing. I shove the magnet into my pocket.
***
I stretch my red and white tiny-flowered comforter over my crossed legs and try not to look over at Francesca’s empty bed, still made up with the matching bedspread. My guitar sits in the stand and stares at me like an abandoned dog. I haven’t been able to go near it since we got the call. Francesca talked my parents into giving me the guitar for my eighth grade graduation, a gift from all three of them. It’s the same style of acoustic guitar John Lennon had. She knew I’d go ballistic over it. I used a black Sharpie marker to copy his famous character sketch, just like the one he had on the guitar he used during the Bed-In for Peace. My parents had a fit when they saw the drawing. They thought I’d ruined the guitar.

I tried to explain how much I admired John Lennon, how I want to be an artist who changes the world like he did. In the middle of my explanation, the phone rang. The office called with an emergency. We were supposed to finish talking later, but never did.

I was playing “Imagine” when my mother stormed through the door screaming that Francesca was dead. Then she fainted.

I glance over at Francesca’s empty bed and turn out the light. Staring at the moon outside my window, missing Francesca so bad I want to curl up and die, I wonder how Donny’s surviving.

I close my eyes. A replay of the day flashes through my head. I start to drift into the still black waters of the night.

Then I smell cigarette smoke.

I see Francesca in her bathroom, standing with her foot on the toilet, blowing smoke out the window, making fun of all our goofy distant relatives that were at her wake and funeral.

I’m sitting on the side of the tub, laughing.

Francesca smiles at me, taking a long drag from her cigarette. Then she tells me she’s okay.
My eyes fly open.

I sit up.

My heart jumps into my throat. I grab for the lamp and miss. My water glass falls onto the carpet. I reach for the lamp again and turn it on. I stare at the end of my bed. No Francesca. I fly out of bed. I blink, rub my sweaty forehead and look around the room. My legs shake as I crawl back into bed.

The cigarette smoke chokes me.

I scream but nothing comes out.
