Week 5 Review: Shade Me

From Goodreads:
Nikki Kill does not see the world like everyone else. In her eyes, happiness is pink, sadness is a mixture of brown and green, and lies are gray. Thanks to a rare phenomenon called synesthesia, Nikki's senses overlap, in a way that both comforts and overwhelms her.

Always an outsider, just one 'D' shy of flunking out, Nikki's life is on the fast track to nowhere until the night a mysterious call lights her phone up bright orange—the color of emergencies. It's the local hospital. They need Nikki to identify a Jane Doe who is barely hanging on to life after a horrible attack.

The victim is Peyton Hollis, a popular girl from Nikki's school who Nikki hardly knows. One thing is clear: Someone wants Peyton dead. But why? And why was Nikki's cell the only number in Peyton's phone?

As she tries to decipher the strange kaleidoscope of clues, Nikki finds herself thrust into the dark, glittering world of the ultra-rich Hollis family, and drawn towards Peyton's handsome, never-do-well older brother Dru. While Nikki's colors seem to help her unravel the puzzle, what she can't see is that she may be falling into a trap. The only truth she can be sure of is that death is a deep, pulsing crimson.

Shade Me is award-winning author Jennifer Brown's first book in a thrilling suspense series about Nikki Kill.

My Review:
This book was different from most books! It was darker, and there was no happy ending for now-the ending was pretty dark, and with a lot of questions, some answers, and some darker times coming in the future!

One thing that I have to comment on, is the cover! It's so beautiful, and I love the colours, it's so wonderful to look at! And it's a great representation of the book, what with Nikki's synesthesia. So really great cover!

Nikki wasn't the easiest to like for me. She was enjoyable to read about, not not likeable at first. She was harsh and straight to the point, and she had some bad habits, like smoking. I really don't like the idea of smoking! But she grew on me!

Loved the mystery, and the clues that were left behind by Peyton, and the reasons why. Family is complicated, and I thought that things might go bad in places that they didn't, and vice versa. And all those twists and revelations at the end? Shocking, and I can't wait to see some reactions in the next book!

This book was wonderful, and I really can't wait to read more!

Week 5 Review: Burn

From Goodreads:
After helping to rescue Princess Aislynn, Elanor has finally rejoined the rebel camp she calls home. Stolen from her parents at a young age and forced into service by the Wicked Queen, Elanor now wants nothing more than to see the queen removed from power. But Elanor has secrets, mistakes she's spent years trying to forget, and the closer the rebels get to the throne, the harder it is for Elanor to keep her past hidden away.

With fellow rebels on her side—including Princess Aislynn, Thackery, and the handsome and mysterious Matthias—it is time for Elanor to make a decision. Will she protect her secrets? Or risk everything to save the people she loves?

The thrilling companion to Elissa Sussman's masterful and original fairy tale, Stray, that will appeal to readers of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and fans of Wicked, Into the Woods, and the Disney princess movies.

My Review:
Gah, it was so great to read this book! I'd only recently read Stray, so it was really great to just dive into this book!  It was great to really get to know Elanor, and see Aislynn and Thackery again! Just an awesome book!

Really enjoyed seeing things from the side that wasn't clouded by the "path" and all that nonsense. Though maybe a different type of clouding, with what the Wicked Queen did to to all of them. But there was a few major twists there!

My one complaint, is that I wish that this book was longer! We could've had more time to explore what was going on, and learn more, and just plain have more time with them! But there's always the next book, yeah!

So my suspicions from the first book, about Aislynn and her Fairy Godmother and the wolf, well, are continued on in this book, and added to them, is Elanor and her fox! This series is called the Four Sisters, and we got the other version of the story. And we had the power objects. So yeah, things are starting to take shape!

Loved this book, it was so freaking great, and I can't wait to read more, the next girl, the next "sister"!

Week 5 Reviews: Being Jamie Baker, Kissing Jamie Baker, More Than Jamie Baker

From Goodreads:
An accident that should end in tragedy instead gives seventeen-year-old Jamie Baker a slew of uncontrollable superhuman abilities. To keep her secret safe Jamie socially exiles herself, earning the title of Rocklin High's resident ice queen. But during a supercharged encounter with star quarterback Ryan Miller she literally kisses anonymity goodbye. Now the annoyingly irresistible Ryan will stop at nothing to melt the heart of the ice queen and find out what makes her so special. Unfortunately, Ryan is not the only person on to her secret. Will Jamie learn to contain her unstable powers before being discovered by the media or turned into a government lab rat? More importantly, can she throw Ryan Miller off her trail before falling in love with him?

From Goodreads:
A short story that retells Jamie and Ryan's first kiss from Ryan's point of view.

From Goodreads:
Jamie Baker, the only girl in the world with superpowers, has now accepted who she is and learned to control her power. Not to mention she has the best boyfriend on the planet. Life is finally looking good. But the day she witnesses an accident and decides not to save the guy out of fear of being exposed, she realizes that simply being Jamie Baker isn't enough.
After seeing Jamie so wrecked with guilt, the ever-helpful Ryan Miller decides it's time to make all of his fantasies about turning his girlfriend into an honest-to-goodness superhero become a reality.

Of course, coming up with a decent Super Name and fending off all of Ryan's attempts to get her into spandex aren't the only problems Jamie faces. The more her alter ego starts to make headlines, the harder it becomes for Jamie to hide her extracurricular activities from her best friend, the government, radical scientists, and the mysterious new guy who is determined to steal her from her boyfriend.

My Review:
I wasn't expecting to read these books. Before I saw on Facebook that Being Jamie Baker was free on various book-selling sites, I hadn't even heard of it. But I'm so glad that I have, because they were just so fantastic and amazing books!

I loved reading about Jamie, she was such an incredible character, her story was so captivating, and I just loved her voice! And the story she had to tell, oh wow, so entertaining to read! I loved her, Ryan, and all the others! So fantastic to read these books!

Being Jamie Baker, we really got introduced to this world and to these characters. And it was really awesome to have that, because that makes this series a bit of a YA/NA series, between the high school setting, and then the college setting!

More Than Jamie Baker, well, the threats were expanded upon, and there were lies and secrets and stuff. And people weren't who they seemed to be and other times, people grew and changed. Which was something of a good thing, in one case, and a bad thing in another.

Oh, that cliffhanger ending of More Than Jamie Baker! That was pure evil, and has me begging for the final book in the series! Though I feel sorry for those who've read it before me, and have been waiting for it and dealing with the pain longer!

This is such a fantastic series, so enjoyable ,and I'm going to have to check out Kelly Oram's other books out!

Week 5 Review: Feverborn

From Goodreads:
In Karen Marie Moning's latest installment of the epic #1 New York Times bestselling Fever series, the stakes have never been higher and the chemistry has never been hotter. Hurtling us into a realm of labyrinthine intrigue and consummate seduction, FEVERBORN is a riveting tale of ancient evil, lust, betrayal, forgiveness and the redemptive power of love.

When the immortal race of the Fae destroyed the ancient wall dividing the worlds of Man and Faery, the very fabric of the universe was damaged and now Earth is vanishing bit by bit. Only the long-lost Song of Making—a haunting, dangerous melody that is the source of all life itself—can save the planet.

But those who seek the mythic Song—Mac, Barrons, Ryodan and Jada—must contend with old wounds and new enemies, passions that burn hot and hunger for vengeance that runs deep. The challenges are many: The Keltar at war with nine immortals who've secretly ruled Dublin for eons, Mac and Jada hunted by the masses, the Seelie queen nowhere to be found, and the most powerful Unseelie prince in all creation determined to rule both Fae and Man. Now the task of solving the ancient riddle of the Song of Making falls to a band of deadly warriors divided among—and within—themselves.

Once a normal city possessing a touch of ancient magic, Dublin is now a treacherously magical city with only a touch of normal. And in those war-torn streets, Mac will come face to face with her most savage enemy yet: herself.

My Review:
This book! Oh man, it was just so great! Another fantastic book in this series that it just so incredible, and just keeps getting better! After the cliffhanger ending of Burned, this book was something of a need to read-I had to have more!

This book dealt with a lot of the threads that carried on from Burned. And then it mentioned some of the others, though I don't think all of them were. But I know that they'll be a part of Feversong! And I can't wait to read them!

One big part of this book was dealing with what was left of the Hoar Frost King's leftovers, or regurgitated messes. Because the black holes could wipe out the earth, and that would be really bad, since the Nine (well, now Ten) died on earth (though as pointed out in a Q&A, that doesn't mean that the original Nine were born on earth!

Another thing this book brought up was Mac's fear that she'd never gotten free of the Sinsar Dubh and all that was happening was just part of the illusion. Which is kinda freaking scary, but since we have POV's of other characters, well, we know that's unlikely, but Mac doesn't have that!

A lot happens in this book, and all the little bits are starting to come together (though it hasn't taken it's true shape) and it was just so fascinating to read, why things happened, what's going to happen as a result of them, what was revealed, and, oh, yeah, THAT CLIFFHANGER ENDING!!!!! That was just evil! I need more!

Such a fantastic book, and I really, really need Feversong! Which might not be the end of the series, yeah, but just the end of this story arc! Yeah! Though apparently this is not set in stone. Boo. I want and desperately need more!

Waiting on Wednesday #246, January 27th

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

Firstlife by Gena Showalter
Expected Publication: February 23rd, 2016
From Goodreads:
ONE CHOICE.

TWO REALMS.

NO SECOND CHANCE.

Tenley “Ten” Lockwood is an average seventeen-year-old girl…who has spent the past thirteen months locked inside the Prynne Asylum. The reason? Not her obsession with numbers, but her refusal to let her parents choose where she’ll live—after she dies.

There is an eternal truth most of the world has come to accept: Firstlife is merely a dress rehearsal, and real life begins after death.

In the Everlife, two realms are in power: Troika and Myriad, longtime enemies and deadly rivals. Both will do anything to recruit Ten, including sending their top Laborers to lure her to their side. Soon, Ten finds herself on the run, caught in a wild tug-of-war between the two realms who will do anything to win the right to her soul. Who can she trust? And what if the realm she’s drawn to isn’t home to the boy she’s falling for? She just has to stay alive long enough to make a decision…

Bitter Bite by Jennifer Estep
Expected Publication: February 23rd 2016
From Goodreads:
Which is stronger: blood ties or a battle-tested friendship?

It’s not easy being queen bee of an underworld abuzz with crooks and killers. Wielding my potent Ice and Stone elemental magic will only get me so far—my real secret is my tight-knit makeshift family, a motley crew of cops and criminals, dwarves and playboys. My foster brother Finnegan Lane is my right-hand man, but when his suddenly not-dead relative comes back into the picture, I’m the one on the outside looking in.

It’s funny how life works: one minute your best friend is rock-steady, and the next he’s doe-eyed and buying into this whole loving-relative routine to the point of ignoring you. I’d like to be happy for Finn, I really would. But all of my instincts are telling me that beneath the syrupy sweet demeanor and old-fashioned charm, this sudden interloper is planning something. The whole shtick leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. This person might have avoided the grave once, but I’ll put anyone who hurts Finn in the ground—for good.

The Power by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Expected Publication: February 23rd, 2016
From Goodreads:
With any great change, there is always strife, and the Covenant University has become the frontline between pure-bloods who want the Breed Order reinstated and the half-bloods who want the right to control their own destinies.
Fate has other plans.

The violence is escalating and war between the races seems inevitable, and it couldn’t come at a worse time. Hyperion may be out of commission, but Josie and Seth know they have only earned a reprieve. Seth must get Josie fully prepared, which means controlling her newfound abilities, and they need to find the other demigods before the Titans do.
But the gods are sensing a greater threat.

Only one thing is more dangerous than a bunch of starved Titans, and that’s an out-of-control Apollyon. The aether in Josie is drawing Seth in deeper, and when lust mixes with love and gives way to power, he knows being close to her is not only dangerous to her, but to everyone around them, but letting her go requires a level of selflessness that just isn’t Seth’s style.

The paths taken in the past are becoming the roads of the future.

Just as chaos breaks out, familiar faces from the past return, complicating the already strained bond between Josie and Seth, and when the danger from the Titans erupts with devastating consequences, the dark allure of power calls to Seth again, but this time Josie might not be able to pull him back.

And when the struggle between power and love becomes the deadliest battleground, there may be no salvation.

Kingdom of Ashes by Rihannon Thomas
Expected Publication: February 23rd, 2016
From Goodreads:
Asleep for a hundred years, awoken by a kiss, Aurora’s life was supposed to be a fairytale. But since discovering that loyalty to the crown and loyalty to her country are two very different things, Aurora knows she can only dream of happily ever after. Once the enchanted princess, savior of her people, she is now branded a traitor.

Aurora is determined to free her home from the king’s tyrannical rule, even if it means traveling across the sea to the kingdom of the handsome and devious Prince Finnegan—someone who seems to know far more about her magic than he should. However, Finnegan’s kingdom has perils of its own, and any help he gives Aurora will come at a price.

As Aurora and Finnegan work together to harness her power—something so fiery and dangerous that is as likely to destroy those close to Aurora as it is to save them—she begins to unravel the mysteries surrounding the curse that was placed on her over a century before…and uncover the truth about the destiny she was always meant to fulfill.

Brimming with captivating fantasy and life-threatening danger, the sequel to A Wicked Thing takes Sleeping Beauty on an adventure unlike any she’s ever had before.

Behold the Bones by Natalie C. Parker
Expected Publication: February 23rd, 2016
From Goodreads:
Candace “Candy” Pickens has been obsessed with the swamp lore of her tiny Louisiana town for . . . forever. Name any ghostly swamp figure and Candy will recite the entire tale in a way that will curl your toes and send chills up your spine.

That doesn’t mean Candy’s a believer, however. Even though she and her friends entered the swamp at the start of summer and left it changed, Candy’s the only one who can’t see or feel the magical swamp Shine. She’s also the only one who can’t see the ghosts that have been showing up and spooking everyone in town ever since. So Candy concentrates on other things—real things. Like fighting with her mother and plotting her escape from her crazy town.

But ghosts aren’t the only newcomers in Sticks, Louisiana. The King family arrives like a hurricane: in a blur and unwanted—at least by Candy. Mr. King is intent on filming the rumored ghostly activity for his hit TV show, Local Haunts. And while Candy can’t ignore how attracted she is to eighteen-year-old Gage King and how much his sister, Nova, wants to be friends, she’s still suspicious of the King family.

As Candy tries to figure out why the Kings are really in town and why the swamp that had previously cast her aside now seems to be invading every crack in her logical, cynical mind, she stumbles across the one piece of swamp lore she didn’t know. It’s a tale that’s more truth than myth, and may have all the answers . . . and its roots are in Candy’s own family tree.

Romance and action come crashing together when a teenage boy with incredible powers is brought to the attention of the government.

Jake Lukin just turned 18. He's decent at tennis and Halo, and waiting to hear on his app to Stanford. But he's also being followed by a creep with a gun, and there's a DARPA agent waiting in his bedroom. His secret is blown.

When Jake holds a personal object, like a pet rock or a ring, he has the ability to "tunnel" into the owner. He can sense where they are, like a human GPS, and can see, hear, and feel what they do. It's an ability the government would do anything to possess: a perfect surveillance unit who could locate fugitives, spies, or terrorists with a single touch.

Jake promised his dad he’d never tell anyone about his ability. But his dad died two years ago, and Jake slipped. If he doesn't agree to help the government, his mother and sister may be in danger. Suddenly he's juggling high school, tennis tryouts, flirting with Rachel Watkins, and work as a government asset, complete with 24-hour bodyguards.

Forced to lie to his friends and family, and then to choose whether to give up everything for their safety, Jake hopes the good he's doing—finding kidnap victims and hostages, and tracking down terrorists—is worth it. But he starts to suspect the good guys may not be so good after all. With Rachel's help, Jake has to try to escape both good guys and bad guys and find a way to live his own life instead of tunneling through others.
