Week 13 Reviews: Tamed by a Laird, Seduced by a Rogue, Tempted by a Warrior

From Goodreads:
National bestselling author Amanda Scott sweeps readers back to the turbulent fourteenth-century Scottish Borders, where valiant men and women risk everything for their land.

Jenny Easdale is ready to accept her fate. She's agreed to marry a man she will never love—yet not before slipping away for one last adventure. Following a traveling minstrel troupe, she's whisked into a world of intoxicating freedom. Then, all too soon, she finds herself in danger—from a vengeful political plot against Scotland and from the man who has come to take her home.

Duty bound to return with his brother's wayward bride, Sir High Douglas is not prepared for how her quick wit, courage, and laughing eyes touch his warrior heart.

Now, as the merry minstrels play matchmaker and passion sparks between Hugh and Jenny, the conspiracy against Scotland builds... and threatens all they hold dear.

A fair-haired beauty at 19, Lady Mairi is heiress apparent to her father Lord Dunwythie's rich barony. He has carefully taught her how to manage their estates, but a feud between his clan and the Maxwell clan is brewing as the two families edge toward a clan war - their dispute over money owed. Mairi's father believes he owes nothing, and of course Mairi sides with him.

When the impulsive and blue-eyed Rob Maxwell chances to meet Mairi in a barley field, they feel instant attraction, despite their families' antagonisms. Knowing he must put his clan first, Rob enacts a plan to force Dunwythie to pay his debt: Rob kidnaps Mairi, making the abduction appear the work of a stranger; then he and his sheriff-brother offer to help Dunwythie rescue his daughter IF, and only if, he will pay them the monies due. Yet after Rob captures Mairi's body, she captures his heart. When Dunwythie summons the aid of the most powerful clan in all Scotland (the Douglases), clan-tensions rise to a fever pitch. Love takes its own feverish course, as Mairi and Rob join forces to prevent a clash between hot-headed clans, and to protect their budding love.

From Goodreads:
TEMPTED BY A WARRIOR

Before her marriage, it was whispered that Lady Fiona Jardine was a young woman no man could control. Now the rumors are more threatening. Her cruel and womanizing husband has vanished into the battle-scarred Scottish borderlands without a trace, and everyone thinks Fiona is to blame.

Sir Richard Seyton, Laird of Kirkhill and a powerful knight and baron, is honor-bound to be Fiona's guardian until her husband is found. Kirkhill strives to keep her safe --- while her enemies plot to prevent her from ever being the mistress of the Jardine lands. But can he protect her from the desire that ignites at their slightest touch? For the suspicions mounting and tensions along the Borders rising, surrendering to their passion could cost Fiona and Kirkhill their very lives ...

First Lines Friday #724, March 28th

First Lines Friday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie of Precision Reviews. We encourage all of our fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

-Grab your current read(s)
-Share the first line(s)
-Include the title and author so that other FLF participants can add the book to their TBR Lists!

"Minstrels had been playing music in the minstrel gallery from the time the first guests of the new laird had entered the ancient castle hall to take dinner with him. Since then, a juggler had juggled, dancers had danced, and now a harpist was plucking merry tunes from his wee harp. As the harpist performed in a cleared space below the dais, men swiftly set up trestles behind him and laid stout planks across them, an indication that the best of the entertainment was about to begin."-Tamed by the Laird by Amanda Scott

That sounds nice! Must read more now! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Show the Books Showcase #11, May 9th

There are a ton of books out there! So here's a chance to organize some books and show them off in various ways!

So this week's theme is Covers! I chose to do Covers Without a Human Figure On Them!

Lichgates by S. M. Boyce
Publisher: Immortal Ink Publishing
Published: October 1st, 2011
From Goodreads:
The final page will leave you breathless.

When Kara Magari uncovers a secret door in the middle of the forest, she discovers (and trips through) a portal to a hidden world full of terrifying things: Ourea. She just wants to go home, but the natives have other plans for her. She clashes with immortal shapeshifters, is carried off by a dragon, nearly dies on several occasions, and somehow becomes the master of an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire. Every time she thinks she's safe, her new "friends" show their true colors.

Kara needs an ally, or she might not survive Ourea's monsters. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn't know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.

For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this stranded girl, there's something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.

Welcome to Ourea, where only the cunning survive.

What's Interesting: Finding a secret door! A strange and terrifying world, Ourea! A place where only the cunning survive!

Rudiger doesn't kill because he wants to. He kills because he needs to.

When the sadistic Preacherman stole the last bit of Rudiger's already troubled childhood soul, Rudiger lost himself forever. As an adult, Rudiger has committed atrocities even he cannot explain and he yearns for the End of Days to release him from his pain. God has told him he must crucify The One to bring about the Final Judgment, but Rudiger is left to his own special abilities to figure out who The One is. Thus sets off Rudiger's horrifying journey across continents in hopes of bringing an end to the world, one nail at a time.

One man remembers what Rudiger is capable of. Jonas Osborne, an Army Ranger and Senatorial Chief of Staff, saw first-hand what Rudiger is capable of during a terrifying firefight in Somalia almost two decades earlier. Now Jonas himself could be a target on Rudiger's quest, and he enlists the help of a beautiful psychic criminologist to understand where Rudiger will erect his next cross. And only on the biggest international stage--a summit for Middle East peace talks--will Jonas and Rudiger meet again for one final confrontation.

Week 30 Review: Seduced by a Rogue

A fair-haired beauty at 19, Lady Mairi is heiress apparent to her father Lord Dunwythie's rich barony. He has carefully taught her how to manage their estates, but a feud between his clan and the Maxwell clan is brewing as the two families edge toward a clan war - their dispute over money owed. Mairi's father believes he owes nothing, and of course Mairi sides with him.

When the impulsive and blue-eyed Rob Maxwell chances to meet Mairi in a barley field, they feel instant attraction, despite their families' antagonisms. Knowing he must put his clan first, Rob enacts a plan to force Dunwythie to pay his debt: Rob kidnaps Mairi, making the abduction appear the work of a stranger; then he and his sheriff-brother offer to help Dunwythis rescue his daughter IF, and only if, he will pay them the monies due.

My Review:
I loved that there were strong women in this book. I didn't like the men demeaning the strong women, though. Guess I have to be more careful about choosing historical novels, though I didn't pick this one up myself (it's a book that my granny gave me for my birthday)

My favourite characters were Herself (Rob's grandmother) and Mairi. They were the strong women I was talking about, but only Mairi was kidnapped, and actually apologized for trying to escape said kidnapper.

But he let her go, so that's a plus. And I liked the book besides that part. It was good, even if I read it a bit slowly, at least I'm all caught up now!

It was a good book, and one that you should read if you can get past the unfairness of the position of women at the time.
