Week 43 Review: Whiteout

From Goodreads:
Atlanta is blanketed with snow just before Christmas, but the warmth of young love just might melt the ice in this novel of Black joy, and cozy, sparkling romance--by the same unbeatable team of authors who wrote the New York Times bestseller Blackout!

As the city grinds to a halt, twelve teens band together to help a friend pull off the most epic apology of her life. But will they be able to make it happen, in spite of the storm?

No one is prepared for this whiteout. But then, we can't always prepare for the magical moments that change everything.

From the bestselling, award-winning, all-star authors who brought us Blackout--Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon--comes another novel of Black teen love, each relationship within as unique and sparkling as Southern snowflakes.

My Review:
Oh, this was a lot of fun to read! I recently read Blackout by these authors, and I was really excited to read this one, to see if it was told in a different way from other anthologies, and it was, with the various teens narrating different chapters, in one cohesive, connected story! With an added twist that the authors of each story aren't outright stated, but given hints as to who wrote what!

The same concept that made Blackout great, with these characters, with some sort of shut down, slowly coming together, with great representation and diversity, it's all present in this book, this time with a whiteout snowstorm. I really enjoyed watching these characters stories play out!

The overarching story that was supported by the others, was of Stevie and Sola. Stevie messed up and needs to make an apology to Sola, but there's this big storm that shuts down the city pretty much. But she has a great group of friends to help her!

This book is more connected then Blackout, since they are all friends. I really enjoyed how one flowed to the next, with this group of characters, and the romances and the adventures they're having to help Stevie, it was so entertaining to read!

Loved reading this book, and if they put out any other anthologies like this one, I'll read it!

Week 42 Review: Blackout

From Goodreads:
Six critically acclaimed, bestselling, and award-winning authors bring the glowing warmth and electricity of Black teen love to this interlinked novel of charming, hilarious, and heartwarming stories that shine a bright light through the dark.

A summer heatwave blankets New York City in darkness. But as the city is thrown into confusion, a different kind of electricity sparks…

A first meeting.

Long-time friends.

Bitter exes.

And maybe the beginning of something new.

When the lights go out, people reveal hidden truths. Love blossoms, friendship transforms, and new possibilities take flight.

Beloved authors—Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon—celebrate the beauty of six couples and the unforgettable magic that can be found on a sweltering starry night in the city.

My Review:
This was a really fantastic collection of stories! I loved watching these various characters deal with the blackout, and all that happened! It was a really fun anthology idea, and it has me even more excited for Whiteout, I think from all of these authors again!

The way that this book was told, with Tiffany D. Jackson's split into parts-between all the other stories-was pretty interesting! We started with their story, paused, had the girl's brother's story, resumed, paused, had another story, and repeat. And we did get slight mentions of what was going on in the others, which I loved.

There were two main connections in this book, in the backdrop of this city-wide blackout. The first was that they all were connected in some way to this block party that's being thrown, though Angie Thomas's characters didn't know that, and only ended up there because the bus driver is Tammie and Tremaine's dad. Sometimes it was a little difficult keeping how everyone was connected straight in my head.

The other was the emotional romantic journeys that these characters went on. From exes working things out to strangers meeting, to best friends in love with one another, to a relationship where there's dissatisfaction, between the representation in race and sexualities, this book had it all!

This was a really great read, and I can't wait to read Whiteout now!

OK, so I got 35 posts in 7 days, it was a decent reading week, but it wasn't the best, we had a death in the family, and the funeral was yesterday. What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Everything, Everything, The Power of Hades.
The Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller

If you love Eleanor and Park, Hazel and Augustus, and Mia and Adam, you’ll love the story of Maddy, a girl who’s literally allergic to the outside world, and Olly, the boy who moves in next door . . . and becomes the greatest risk she’s ever taken. This innovative and heartfelt debut novel unfolds via vignettes, diary entries, illustrations, and more.

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He's tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.
I've been kidnapped by Zeus. Plucked from the streets of Manhattan and frightened half to death by a freaking Olympian god.

And now I'm trapped in the Underworld, being forced to compete in a series of deadly trials for the position of Queen of the Underworld. Which would mean marrying Hades, the utterly terrifying Lord of the Dead. Who the hell wants a husband at all, let alone one made of smoke and riddled with death?

I have to get back home, to New York and my brother. But I can't leave without completing the trials and they've been designed for a godly Queen, not Persephone - barista and botanical garden enthusiast.
I'm surrounded by lethal, all-powerful maniacs. Sexy-as-hell maniacs, sure, but as dangerous as they come. And I'm going to have to prove to all of them that there's a goddess of hell inside me. It's the only way I'll survive the Hades Trials. But then what? And why, why, why am I so desperate to see under Hades smoky exterior and find out what he's hiding from me?

If I win the trials, I have to marry the devil himself. But losing might mean losing my life.

Week 3 Review: Concrete Rose

From Goodreads:
International phenomenon Angie Thomas revisits Garden Heights seventeen years before the events of The Hate U Give in this searing and poignant exploration of Black boyhood and manhood.

If there's one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it's that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad's in prison.

Life’s not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav's got everything under control.

Until, that is, Maverick finds out he's a father.

Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. But it's not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child. So when he's offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. In a world where he's expected to amount to nothing, maybe Mav can prove he's different.

When King Lord blood runs through your veins, though, you can't just walk away. Loyalty, revenge, and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. He'll have to figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.

My Review:
Yeah, I loved reading this book! It was so fantastic to spend this time, at this time, with Maverick at this time, when he finds out he's the father of the baby he renames Seven. So a pretty tumultuous time! And he was in such a tough place, between his newfound fatherhood and his being in a gang.

I have to say, it was interesting to see these characters who were the adults in The Hate U Give, but who are the teens right now. And it's so interesting to see, because they  have the experiences that shape them and grow into the adults that we know and love, but they don't start out that way.

I'm an anxious person. And throughout this book, I was so worried about Maverick making decisions that would end poorly, from drug dealing to going after his cousin's killer. I mean, we know it turns out all right in the end, but I still worried, because what's a book without conflict? But it was so great to read!

Just one little side note, with having this set in the past, well, Kobe is mentioned in this book. I don't know anything about sports, but I'm pretty sure that this is the basketball player how tragically died last year. So that was bittersweet!

I really love that ending. Maverick proved himself to be the better person, even though it would be so tempting to go the other way. He has responsibilities that he's been taking seriously, but he really focuses to do the right thing for him and his family, and that was really great to read!

I loved reading this book, and I loved spending this time with the characters!

Waiting on Wednesday #501, December 16th

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

Blood Heir by Ilona Andrews
Expected Publication: January 12th, 2021
From Goodreads:
From Ilona Andrews, an all-new novel set in the Kate Daniels World and featuring Julie Lennart-Olsen, Kate and Curran's ward.

Atlanta was always a dangerous city. Now, as waves of magic and technology compete for supremacy, it’s a place caught in a slow apocalypse, where monsters spawn among the crumbling skyscrapers and supernatural factions struggle for power and survival.

Eight years ago, Julie Lennart left Atlanta to find out who she was. Now she’s back with a new face, a new magic, and a new name—Aurelia Ryder—drawn by the urgent need to protect the family she left behind. An ancient power is stalking her adopted mother, Kate Daniels, an enemy unlike any other, and a string of horrifying murders is its opening gambit.

If Aurelia’s true identity is discovered, those closest to her will die. So her plan is simple: get in, solve the murders, prevent the prophecy from being fulfilled, and get out without being recognized. She expected danger, but she never anticipated that the only man she'd ever loved could threaten everything.

One small misstep could lead to disaster. But for Aurelia, facing disaster is easy; it’s relationships that are hard.

Every Single Lie by Rachel Vincent
Expected Publication: January 12th, 2021
From Goodreads:
In this gripping YA novel about social media bullying and half-truths, one girl's discovery of a dead baby in her high school locker room rocks an entire community.

Nobody in Beckett's life seems to be telling the whole story. Her boyfriend Jake keeps hiding texts and might be cheating on her. Her father lied about losing his job before his shocking death. And everyone in school seems to be whispering about her and her family behind her back.

But none of that compares to the day Beckett finds the body of a newborn baby in a gym bag-Jake's gym bag -on the floor of her high school locker room. As word leaks out, rumors that Beckett's the mother take off like wildfire in a town all too ready to believe the worst of her. And as the police investigation unfolds, she discovers that everyone has a secret to hide and the truth could alter everything she thought she knew.

Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire
Expected Publication: January 12th, 2021
From Goodreads:
A young girl discovers a portal to a land filled with centaurs and unicorns in Seanan McGuire's Across the Green Grass Fields, a standalone tale in the Hugo and Nebula Award-wining Wayward Children series.

“Welcome to the Hooflands. We’re happy to have you, even if you being here means something’s coming.”

Regan loves, and is loved, though her school-friend situation has become complicated, of late.

When she suddenly finds herself thrust through a doorway that asks her to "Be Sure" before swallowing her whole, Regan must learn to live in a world filled with centaurs, kelpies, and other magical equines―a world that expects its human visitors to step up and be heroes.

But after embracing her time with the herd, Regan discovers that not all forms of heroism are equal, and not all quests are as they seem…

The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry by C.M. Waggoner
Expected Publication: January 12th, 2021
From Goodreads:
A charming historical fantasy with a tender love story at its core, from the author of Unnatural Magic.

Hard-drinking petty thief Dellaria Wells is down on her luck in the city of Leiscourt—again. Then she sees a want ad for a female bodyguard, and she fast-talks her way into the high-paying job. Along with a team of other women, she’s meant to protect a rich young lady from mysterious assassins.

At first Delly thinks the danger is exaggerated, but a series of attacks shows there’s much to fear. Then she begins to fall for Winn, one of the other bodyguards, and the women team up against a mysterious, magical foe who seems to have allies everywhere.

Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas
Expected Publication: January 12th, 2021
From Goodreads:
International phenomenon Angie Thomas revisits Garden Heights seventeen years before the events of The Hate U Give in this searing and poignant exploration of Black boyhood and manhood.

If there’s one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it’s that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad’s in prison.

Life’s not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav’s got everything under control.

Until, that is, Maverick finds out he’s a father.

Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. But it’s not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child. So when he’s offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. In a world where he’s expected to amount to nothing, maybe Mav can prove he’s different.

When King Lord blood runs through your veins, though, you can't just walk away. Loyalty, revenge, and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. He’ll have to figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.

Soul of Cinder by Bree Barton
Expected Publication: January 12th, 2021
From Goodreads:
The Twisted Sisters are coming home.

Prince Quin has returned to the river kingdom, ready to spearhead a rebellion and reclaim the throne. He vows to destroy Mia, Pilar, and Angelyne if they oppose him—even if he must use his newfound magic to set the world aflame.

Across the four kingdoms, the elements have been tipped askew. Volcanoes erupt, glaciers collapse, and cities sink into the western sands. After losing Angie, Mia and Pilar journey to the glass kingdom to seek help, though soon their fragile bonds of sisterhood begin to fray. Mia’s sensations are creeping back, and with them, a deep and searing grief. Pilar, terrified of being broken, once again seeks comfort in her fists. But when they hear rumors of a misty island that promises to erase all pain, they suddenly find themselves with an answer—if they are willing to pay the cost.

As tensions mount, the sisters are drawn back to the river kingdom for a final reckoning with the boy they each loved. The shattering conclusion to Bree Barton’s Heart of Thorns trilogy challenges why we grieve, whom we love—and how to mend a broken heart.

Week 29 Review: On the Come Up

From Goodreads:
Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least make it out of her neighborhood one day. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died before he hit big, Bri's got big shoes to fill. But now that her mom has unexpectedly lost her job, food banks and shutoff notices are as much a part of Bri's life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it—she has to make it.

On the Come Up is Angie Thomas's homage to hip-hop, the art that sparked her passion for storytelling and continues to inspire her to this day. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; of the struggle to become who you are and not who everyone expects you to be; and of the desperate realities of poor and working-class black families.

My Review:
Man, this book was so fantastic! It is set about a year about The Hate U Give, and Bri mentions that she wrote a song about what happened. So that was really great! I really enjoyed getting to know this new cast of characters, and dealing with their problems!

Personally, I'm not a listener to rapper music. My idea of it is mostly that it's spoken words to a beat. And I like music to be sung, you know? So while it's not my think, I  loved seeing Bri's passion! And her strong suit, her lyrics, were fantastic!

So it's a little hard to write this review, it's an important book about what what it's like for Black people, and I'm white. There were a few moments where Bri was making decisions, and I was like, oh, no, something bad is going to happen. Of course, not as bad as my worried brain worried about, but there were some consequences that were unintentional.

My one question is, who was the one who tweeted about Bri in the end? I mean, it sounds like that person could change Bri's life, as long as it's on Bri's terms. Is it meant to be open, to whomever, so each person could have their interpretation, or it is someone specific, just not named?

Really enjoyed this book, and I'm excited for The Hate U Give prequel book!
