Week 48 Review: Murtagh

From Goodreads:
MURTAGH transports readers into an electrifying adventure, with danger and intrigue around every corner. The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror. Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society. But when Murtagh discovers something wicked lurking in the shadows of Alagaësia, so begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untraveled, where he and Thorn must use every weapon in their arsenal, from brains to brawn, to find and outwit a mysterious witch. A witch who is much more than she seems . . .

My Review:
Reading this book was really great! I am really glad that I reread the series before jumping into this book, because I'd forgotten Murtagh as a character, that he was in book 1. But now I came in fresh with knowledge from the first portion of this series, which made it much easier going into this book!

It was really great to be back in this world. With the short story collection, things have been building to set up another story arc in this world, and this book is the big start of that, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Murtagh has been through a lot. Now that Eragon has gone off with the dragon eggs to establish the Dragon Riders, Murtagh doesn't have a lot of allies, and given what he did when he was under the thumb of the king, people don't view him kindly, no matter what he did to take down said king.

Getting a whole book from Murtagh's perspective was really great, I really enjoyed getting to know him as he knows himself, his bond with Thorn, not to mention as they were going on this quest! I'm really excited to see what's going to happen next!

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Christopher Paolini!

Week 47 Reviews: Inheritance, The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm

From Goodreads:
It began with Eragon...
It ends with Inheritance.

Not so very long ago, Eragon--Shadeslayer, Dragon Rider--was nothing more than a poor farm boy, and his dragon, Saphira, only a blue stone in the forest. Now the fate of an entire civilization rests on their shoulders.

The Rider and his dragon have come further than anyone dared to hope. But can they topple the evil king, Galbatorix, and restore justice to Alagaesia? And if so, at what cost?

THE FINAL STUNNING BOOK IN THE WORLDWIDE BESTSELLING INHERITANCE CYCLE.

From Goodreads:
It's been a year since Eragon departed Alagaësia in search of the perfect home to train a new generation of Dragon Riders.

Now he is struggling with an endless sea of tasks: constructing a vast dragonhold, wrangling with suppliers, guarding dragon eggs and dealing with belligerent Urgals and haughty elves. Then a vision from the Eldunarí, unexpected visitors and an exciting Urgal legend offer a much-needed distraction and a new perspective.

This volume features three original stories set in Alagaësia, interspersed with scenes from Eragon's own unfolding adventure. Included is an excerpt from the memoir of the unforgettable witch and fortune-teller Angela the herbalist, penned by Angela Paolini, the inspiration for the character, herself!

Relish the incomparable imagination of Christopher Paolini in this thrilling new collection of stories based in the world of the Inheritance Cycle.

My first review of Inheritance
My Review:
It was so great to read these books! I've read Inheritance, but I had to reread for the latest book, it's been so long since I read it (I read it at the end of my first year blogging and being on Goodreads) and I'd only read it the once. And of course reading The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm!

These were so great to read, and I can't wait to read the newest installment in the world!

"The dragon Saphira roared, and the soldiers before her quailed. 'With me!' shouted Eragon. He lifted Brisingr over his head, holding it aloft for all to see. The blue sword flashed bright and iridescent, stark against the wall of black clouds building in the west. 'For the Varden!' An arrow whizzed past him; he paid it no mind"-Inheritance by Christopher Paolini

Well that's an engaging and blood-pumping opening! Must reread more now! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Phase Out Your TBR:

OK, so I got 43 posts in 7 days, it was a pretty good week. It was hard, because it's now been a month since Dobby's passing, and that was a bit rough. But I currently get Jax for almost 2 weeks, so I'm getting in lots of cuddles. And I'm looking forward to this week! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Defiant!

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson comes the final book in an epic series about a girl who will travel beyond the stars to save the world she loves from destruction.

Spensa made it out of the Nowhere, but what she saw in the space between the stars has changed her forever. She came face to face with the Delvers, and finally got answers to the questions she's had about her own strange Cytonic gifts.

The Superiority didn't stop in it's fight for galactic dominance while she was gone, though. Spensa's team, Skyward Flight, was able to hold Winzik off, and even collect allies to help with the cause, but its only a matter of time until humanity–and the rest of the galaxy–falls.

Defeating them will require all the knowledge Spensa gathered while in the Nowhere. But being Cytonic is more complicated than she ever could have imagined. Now, Spensa must ask herself: how far is she willing to go for victory, if it means losing herself–and her friends–in the process.

The final book in the Skyward series will free humanity, or see it fall forever.

Week 46 Reviews: Eldest, Brisingr

From Goodreads:
Darkness falls…
Despair abounds…
Evil reigns.

Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesméra, land of the elves, for further training in magic and swordsmanship, the vital skills of the Dragon Rider. It is a journey of a lifetime, filled with awe-inspiring new places and people, each day a fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and Eragon isn't sure whom he can trust.

Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle back home in Carvahall–one that puts Eragon in even graver danger.

Will the king's dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life. . .

From Goodreads:
The Empire is at war and the stakes have never been higher in Book Three of the Inheritance Cycle, perfect for fans of Lord of the Rings! This New York Times bestselling series has sold over 40 million copies and is an international fantasy sensation.

"Christopher Paolini is a true rarity." — The Washington Post

Oaths sworn . . . loyalties tested . . . forces collide... Eragon is the greatest hope to rid the land of tyranny. Can this once simple farm boy unite the rebel forces and defeat the king? Following the colossal battle against the Empire's warriors, Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have narrowly escaped with their lives. Still, there is more adventure at hand for the Rider and his dragon, as Eragon finds himself bound by a tangle of promises he may not be able to keep.

When unrest claims the rebels and danger strikes from every corner, Eragon must make choices-choices that will take him across the Empire and beyond, choices that may lead to unimagined sacrifice.

My Review:
Reading these books again was really fantastic! It has been so long since I read these books for the first time, I think this has been my largest gap in rereading a book, so it almost perfectly was like reading them for the first time, knowing just a little bit of the story to come.

I remembered that Roran had a growing story from his persepective, back in Carvahall and onwards, and that Eragon was going to spend time with the Elves, and I was going to feel awful and embarassed on his behalf because of his feelings for Arya, and how I know they're not going to work.

Really, I haven't read most, if any, of the classic fantasy stories, but I went in rereading this series knowing that the first book really following along on the Hero's Journey story beats. It's in these books that the story diverged and became it's own thing, and I loved that, seeing where it was going!

A lot happens in these books, and it's building up to the big battle! Alongside learning more about this world and magic via Eragon and Saphira's training, events are having consequences and rippling outward. I'm so excited to read Inheritance again!

Loved reading these books again, and I can't wait to continue on!

"Eragon stared at the dark tower of stone wherein hid the monsters who had murdered his uncle. Garrow. He was lying on his belly behind the edge of a sandy hill dotted with sparse blades of grass, thornbushes, and small, rosebud-like cactuses. The brittle stems of last year's foliage pricked his palms as he inched forward to gain a better view of Helgrind, which loomed over the surrounding land like a black dagger thrust out from the bowels of the earth. OK, so I got 46 posts in 7 days, I had a decent week, I read an OK amount, I'm taking November a bit slow, but there's plenty to read still! Can't wait for next week! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Dark Heir

In this riveting sequel to the New York Times bestselling novel Dark Rise, Will and his allies have survived the Dark's first assault, but at a terrible cost.

A new threat from the past is rising, and only a handful of heroes remain to fight. Pursued by dark forces, Will and his allies must leave the safety of the Hall and travel to the heart of the ancient world, making new and dangerous alliances, and revealing the shocking secrets of the past.

But Will is carrying a dark secret of his own—his true identity. Drawn to the beautiful and deadly James St. Clair, Will is pulled ever deeper into the web of the past, and finds himself tempted by the darkness within. As the ancient world threatens to return, can Will and his friends fight their fate? Or will the truths they learn tear their world apart?

Dark Heir is the explosive and highly anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestselling Dark Rise, from global phenomenon C. S. Pacat.

Week 45 Review: Eragon

From Goodreads:
One boy...
One dragon...
A world of adventure.

When Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Overnight his simple life is shattered, and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic, and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds.

Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands.

My Review:
It was so fantastic to read this book again! The first (and maybe online time?) I read it, was before I was blogging and keeping track of my reading, back in spring 2011. So it's been a long time since I read the first half of the series! So I'm glad to be back in this world!

This book is very much the classic hero's journey, inspired by countless giants of fantasy before it, but given that it was written when Christopher Paolini was young, and I think it was his first book, yeah, it's pretty impressive, especially with how long it is!

Watching Eragon go on this journey, finding Saphira's egg, on a quest after those that killed his uncle, was so entertaining! I loved watching him travel the land, learn to be a dragon rider, and channel his emotions into the quest.

It's kinda amazing what Eragon accomplished in this first book, with only a beginning of training, and with only a few people plus Saphira with him. But boy, does he have his work cut out for him in the future, with the huge task he still has to deal with, dealing with the empire!

It was so good to read this book again and I can't wait to continue on!

Waiting on Wednesday #647, October 4th

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

To Bind a Dark Heart by Kathryn Ann Kingsley
Expected Publication: November 3rd, 2023
From Goodreads:
“Run, Gwen. Run as far and as hard as you can. Because when I catch you… You will belong to me.”

When she shattered the Iron Crystal and returned magic to Avalon, Gwen also shattered Mordred’s heart. Torn between her passion for Mordred and his rage at her betrayal, she fled into the wilds.

Gwen’s choice has transformed Avalon, and the island teems with magical wonders freed from the crystal. But Gwen also released the vicious and chaotic elementals . Desperate for revenge against Mordred, some of them see Gwen as an ally, others as a hostage.

Now, the Prince in Iron hunts Gwen relentlessly, though at night he visits her in dreams, unable to break the desire that binds them . She is his weakness. If his enemies captured her, he knows that he would make any deal, break any vow to return her to his side.

As the elementals prepare for battle, Gwen will face an impossible choice . Can she stand by as Avalon’s magic is destroyed once again? Or will she fight to overthrow the man she loves?

Building from slow-burn to steam, the Iron Crystal series is packed with alluring villains, dark magic and heart-stopping twists. If you’re a fan of Sarah J. Maas, Laura Thalassa and Carissa Broadbent, To Bind a Dark Heart will have you reading late into the night.

From Goodreads:
“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.

Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree
Expected Publication: November 7th, 2023
From Goodreads:
When an injury throws a young, battle-hungry orc off her chosen path, she may find that what we need isn't always what we seek.

In Bookshops & Bonedust, a prequel to Legends & Lattes, New York Times bestselling author Travis Baldree takes us on a journey of high fantasy, first loves, and second-hand books.

Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned.

Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it.

What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do?

Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.

Still, adventure isn't all that far away. A suspicious traveler in gray, a gnome with a chip on her shoulder, a summer fling, and an improbable number of skeletons prove Murk to be more eventful than Viv could have ever expected.

Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood
Expected Publication: November 7th, 2023
From Goodreads:
In this clever and swoonworthy YA debut from the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis, life's moving pieces bring rival chess players together in a match for the heart.

Mallory Greenleaf is done with chess. Every move counts nowadays; after the sport led to the destruction of her family four years earlier, Mallory's focus is on her mom, her sisters, and the dead-end job that keeps the lights on. That is, until she begrudgingly agrees to play in one last charity tournament and inadvertently wipes the board with notorious "Kingkiller" Nolan Sawyer: current world champion and reigning Bad Boy of chess.

Nolan's loss to an unknown rook-ie shocks everyone. What's even more confusing? His desire to cross pawns again. What kind of gambit is Nolan playing? The smart move would be to walk away. Resign. Game over. But Mallory's victory opens the door to sorely needed cash-prizes and despite everything, she can't help feeling drawn to the enigmatic strategist....

As she rockets up the ranks, Mallory struggles to keep her family safely separated from the game that wrecked it in the first place. And as her love for the sport she so desperately wanted to hate begins to rekindle, Mallory quickly realizes that the games aren't only on the board, the spotlight is brighter than she imagined, and the competition can be fierce (-ly attractive. And intelligent...and infuriating...)

The longer he spends in her presence, the more he begins to question if his heart is the next thing she’ll steal.

Then to complicate it all, there is still only one person who can help her: Jay Friday, the boy with plenty of problems all his own.

As bodies and secrets pile up around town, Winnie finds herself questioning what it means to be a true Wednesday and a true Luminary—and also where her fierce-hearted loyalties might ultimately have to lie.

Mallory Viridian would rather not be an amateur detective, and fled to outer space to avoid it…but when one of the new human arrivals on a space shuttle is murdered, she’s back in the game.

Mallory Viridian would rather not be an amateur detective, thank you very much. But no matter what she does, people persist in dying around her—and only she seems to be able to solve the crime. After fleeing to an alien space station in hopes that the lack of humans would stop the murders, a serial killer had the nerve to follow her to Station Eternity. (Mallory deduced who the true culprit was that time, too.)

Now the law enforcement agent who hounded Mallory on Earth has come to Station Eternity, along with her teenage crush and his sister, Mallory’s best friend from high school. Mallory doesn’t believe in coincidences, and so she’s not at all surprised when someone in the latest shuttle from Earth is murdered. It’s the story of her life, after all.

Only this time she has more than a killer to deal with. Between her fugitive friends, a new threat arising from the Sundry hivemind, and the alarmingly peculiar behavior of the sentient space station they all call home, even Mallory’s deductive abilities are strained. From Goodreads:
This sparkling edition will include a special case stamping, bonus content, and a teaser to book two in this heart-pounding series!

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, this young adult fantasy follows the forbidden romance between a powerful prince and an ordinary girl as they try to survive their kingdom's grueling laws pitting them against each other.

She is the very thing he's spent his whole life hunting.
He is the very thing she's spent her whole live pretending to be.

Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be keenly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can to stay alive and out of trouble…easier said than done.

When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya’s princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites' powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don't kill her, the prince she's fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is…completely Ordinary.
