Week 1 Reviews:
Stranger Skies

Random:

OK, so I got 46 posts in 7 days, we had the end of one year and the start of another, with all the content that brings, that I'm still slowly working on, and I haven't even really touched the best books of the year post, which is always a lot of work. But it was a pretty good week, and I can't wait for this coming week! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Four Ruined Realms!

The King of Yusan may be the greatest liar of them all.

His sister's ring is in his sights, and he will do anything to get what he wants. Even manipulating the five blades to steal it...

Bonded by a common enemy, then divided by deceit, the blades must rely on their skills to pull off King Joon's pursuit or risk his legendary wrath.

A foreign rule of law stands between them and Quilimar, the Queen of Khitan. Now they have one month to steal the powerful Golden Ring of the Dragon Lord. But that impossible task might be easier than trusting one another, even though their lives, their families, and the realms depend on it.

They can all agree on one thing: the king can't win. But can they beat him at his own game?

Because for the blades, this time it's not just personal, it's revenge. Lies may have torn them apart, but now vengeance will bring them together.

Week 1 Review: The Afterdark

From Goodreads:
Queer horror at a boarding school with a Lovecraftian twist in this new YA novel from E. Latimer, author of the acclaimed The Strange and Deadly Portraits of Bryony Gray.

Northcroft is an elite boarding school with a deadly secret. Each night as the bell tolls and the shutters slam down, cutting off the outside world, the Afterdark descends, turning the surrounding old growth forest into a macabre copy of itself. A negative photograph crawling with horrors.

Evie Laurent is certain of one thing from the moment she sees Holland Morgan on the front steps of Northcroft: she wants to know everything there is to know about her. But there are some things about Evie herself that are better kept secret. Especially the fact that she let her sister drown. And that it's getting harder to ignore her dark impulses . . .

Holland Morgan knows falling for Evie is just one more terrible choice in her long history of terrible choices. The problem is, she's not sure she cares.

As attraction turns slowly to obsession, they find themselves playing a dangerous game. Something out there is calling to each of them. Beckoning to the shadows within.

Do they fight the call and protect one another, or answer, and embrace the darkness?

My Review:
This was such an incredible read! I've only read the one other book by E. Latimer as far as I'm aware, and I really enjoyed it, and I was excited to pick this one up! The synopsis sounded really fantastic, and oh, it was such a great read!

The beginning is pretty shocking, given that it starts off with her twin dying, and that she didn't help her. The story told us why, but it was still pretty shocking. It really set the tone for the rest of the book, creepy, off-putting, and so entertaining to read!

I loved the dual perspective, Evie who has family history with the school, and Holland, her crush, but also who was somehow involved with her sister. Which was a really complicated situation. Plus there was a good mix of rational and wild, and oh, when we got answers, and the balance started to tip? So good!

To find out what was going on, I really enjoyed the girls' invergation, into what the secret society was hiding, into Evie's dad and what was going on with him. It was such a thrilling story, and that ending, with that one big reveal, was awesome!

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by E. Latimer!

Waiting on Wednesday #710, December 18th

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear by Seanan McGuire
Expected Publication: January 7th, 2025
From Goodreads:
Giant turtles, impossible ships, and tidal rivers ridden by a Drowned girl in search of a family in the latest in the bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-Winning Wayward Children series from Seanan McGuire.

Nadya had three mothers: the one who bore her, the country that poisoned her, and the one who adopted her.

Nadya never considered herself less than whole, not until her adoptive parents fitted her with a prosthetic arm against her will, seeking to replace the one she'd been missing from birth.

It was cumbersome; it was uncomfortable; it was wrong.

It wasn't her.

Frustrated and unable to express why, Nadya began to wander, until the day she fell through a door into Belyrreka, the Land Beneath the Lake--and found herself in a world of water, filled with child-eating amphibians, majestic giant turtles, and impossible ships that sailed as happily beneath the surface as on top. In Belyrreka, she found herself understood for who she was: a Drowned Girl, who had made her way to her real home, accepted by the river and its people.

But even in Belyrreka, there are dangers, and trials, and Nadya would soon find herself fighting to keep hold of everything she had come to treasure.

For so long Benedek has felt nothing. Now, some dark art is compelling him to indulge in cravings he thought long buried. The Empress by Kristin Cast
Expected Publication: January 7th, 2025
From Goodreads:
He's a ruthless, battle-scarred warrior with a dark past, and she's stuck pretending to be his wife to save a fantasy kingdom.

From New York Times bestselling author Kristin Cast comes a new tarot-inspired fantasy series. Scarlett St. Clair meets Outlander in the seductive and spellbinding world of Towerfall, starting with The Empress, a high-heat, fake marriage romantasy with a swoon-worthy, morally-gray love interest.

The Arcana aren't just figures in a tarot deck—they're real. Terrifyingly real. That's what I learned when I found a tarot card in the snow and was yanked from my world and into Towerfall. The first thing the people of this harsh, cruel realm did was try to kill me, and they probably would have succeeded if Kane hadn't taken me to his hideout in the woods and nursed me back to health.

But I don't know if I can trust him. He's too hot to be good news, he's definitely hiding secrets, and I've already seen him kill two people to protect me. If I hadn't just been helplessly dumped into his world, the scars on his hands and his dark, brooding attitude would have me running in the opposite direction.

But right now, convincing the Kingdom of Pentacles that Kane and I are married is my best chance of getting into the palace, and back to my own world.

Because there's something wrong with Towerfall. Something deeply, terrifyingly wrong. And if anyone finds out Kane and I aren't really married?

Well, then both of us are dead.

Among Us Readathon:

Random:

OK, so I got 42 posts in 7 days, which is better than last week, though I read a little bit less, but I've about read about the same in these past two days as I did in this week! So I'm happy with that! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Call of Vultures, Red Wolf.

In this suspenseful and twisted thriller, an ex-con uses her unique skill set to fight for the justice of those who can't defend themselves. Kate Kessler's novels are "impossible to put down" (Hollie Overton).

Killian Delaney has a skewed moral compass, a high threshold for pain, an unstoppable will, and she's just joined the Network: a group of well-funded individuals who help the weakest among us.

Two sisters have gone missing, and Killian has been hired to track them down.

The plan is straightforward: follow the trail, find the girls, and kill whoever stands in her way.

They're living in a commune in upstate New York, one that looks a lot like a cult. And while one sister wants out, the other adamantly refuses.

Breaking them free will push every skill in Killian's arsenal to its limit. But she's determined to get them home.
This high stakes, pacey reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood is perfect for fans of Stephanie Garber and Megan Spooner.

For as long as sixteen-year-old Adele can remember the village of Oakvale has been surrounding by the dark woods—a forest filled with terrible monsters that light cannot penetrate. Like every person who grows up in Oakvale she has been told to steer clear of the woods unless absolutely necessary.

But unlike her neighbors in Oakvale, Adele has a very good reason for going into the woods. Adele is one of a long line of guardians, women who are able to change into wolves and who are tasked with the job of protecting their village while never letting any of the villagers know of their existence.

But when following her calling means abandoning the person she loves, the future she imagined for herself, and her values she must decide how far she is willing to go to keep her neighbors safe.

Week 4 Review: Witches of Ash and Ruin

From Goodreads:
Modern witchcraft blends with ancient Celtic mythology in an epic clash of witches and gods, perfect for fans of V.E. Schwab's Shades of Magic trilogy and CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA.

Seventeen-year-old Dayna Walsh is struggling to cope with her somatic OCD; the aftermath of being outed as bisexual in her conservative Irish town; and the return of her long-absent mother, who barely seems like a parent. But all that really matters to her is ascending and finally, finally becoming a full witch-plans that are complicated when another coven, rumored to have a sordid history with black magic, arrives in town with premonitions of death. Dayna immediately finds herself at odds with the bewitchingly frustrating Meiner King, the granddaughter of their coven leader.

And then a witch turns up murdered at a local sacred site, along with the blood symbol of the Butcher of Manchester-an infamous serial killer whose trail has long gone cold. The killer's motives are enmeshed in a complex web of witches and gods, and Dayna and Meiner soon find themselves at the center of it all. If they don't stop the Butcher, one of them will be next.

With razor-sharp prose and achingly real characters, E. Latimer crafts a sweeping, mesmerizing story of dark magic and brutal mythology set against a backdrop of contemporary Ireland that's impossible to put down.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! I mean, it sounded really interesting, the idea of witches in Ireland, and murder and I just wanted to get to know these characters and how the magic worked. And it was such a intriguing read!

We did get to be in multiple perspectives, and I enjoyed most of them. Sam was my least favourite, but he added outsider knowledge so I get why he's there, I just enjoyed reading his perspective the least. And Cora, oh, I felt so bad for her, how easily she was being manipulated.

This was a story about witches and magic, but it also deal with mental heath as well, since two of the leads, Daryna and Meiner deal with some OCD/related because I don't think Meiner said what she dealt with, only that she used similar coping mechanisms. On top of that, Meiner had a lot of rage, justifiably so, but she wasn't so great at letting it out, at least, letting it out appropriately, at the right time and place, at the right people. It just really built up who these characters were and that was really great!

Ok, this book can't be a stand alone, I need a sequel, I need more time in this world. I mean, there's so many questions that I have about the characters. What's up with the thing with Dayna and the Goddess I believe, with a similar name, combined with the familiarity that she'd felt? And Sam, sure, maybe it was just him making that choice, but I want to see what's going to come of it! And finally, there's that final scene. It just can't end there, I need more!

This was such a fantastic read, and I really, really hope that we get a sequel!

Third Sentence Thursday #494, January 28th

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!

Third Sentence Thursday is a weekly meme which likes to watch fireworks especially while eating a cookie!
1) Take the book you are currently reading and open it to a random page. Share the third full sentence on that page. (If there isn't a third one – like at the end of a chapter or a blank page – you can share the third sentence of the book or just choose another random page.) Feel free to share more than one sentence, if you feel the need to do so.
2) Review this sentence anyway you want (funny and silly reviews encouraged)
3) Post a link to your sentence at Words I Write Crazy (This Blog)
4) Visit one or two of the other blogs to check out their third sentences!

"We know he's got a Wikipedia page." -Witches of Ash and Ruin by E. Latimer, page 61.

That could be helpful, though that's a bit of a terrifying idea, that this person has a page, given the context of why!

But I had to read the beginnings and endings of these books after watching the show! Which lead to me fully reading The Book of Life now!
