Week 44 Review: Daughter of the Serpentine

From Goodreads:
As a young dragoneer moves through the ranks of the prestigious Serpentine Academy, her challenges grow greater and her time grows short to draw out a series of deadly threats, in this thrilling coming-of-age fantasy novel.

Sixteen-year-old Ileth is now an Apprentice Dragoneer, with all of the benefits and pitfalls that her elevation in rank entails. But her advancement becomes less certain after a she's attacked by an unknown enemy, and Ileth begins to suspect that someone deadly may be hiding within the walls of the academy.

Outside of the walls there is a different challenge. The Rari Pirates are strangling the Vale Republic. What they lack in dragon firepower, they make up for in the brutality of their ever-expanding raids, making hostages or slaves of the Republic's citizens. Surrounded by enemies, Ileth will need to learn what kind of dragoneer she wants to be. And as she makes decisions about her future, Ileth will have the chance to uncover the secrets of her past. Both will irrevocably change the course of her life.

My Review:
Wow, yeah, this book was so fantastic! It was still as dense as the first book, there still were very few, very long chapters, and it was still another great story! But now that we know this world, well, it was much easier for me to read, and just a bit quicker, too.

Ileth compares her problems to a hydra, that she keeps having to cut off heads and such. And that was pretty apt, because right away she has two tasks-to get a sash, and complete the commission she was given, to find a problem in town, and deliver a solution. And this is just first first part of the book! But it's a seed for what happens in the next two parts, and I really enjoyed watching it grow!

There was a minor plotline going on with Ileth and the injury she received when she did the tailer initiation. I enjoyed how it played out, it was minor, but it played a part in how things went down, and that was really great to read!

Ileth faces a lot of personal challenges in this book. Her parentage is a big question from the first book, and in this one, we got answers, and threads to follow to find more. But it came at a cost, and that's on top of campaign that got launched and what she saw and what happened there. So there's a lot going on for Ileth in this book. And I can't wait to see where it goes from here!

I loved reading this book, it was really fantastic, and I need a 3rd book!

Week 44 Review: Lightbringer

From Goodreads:
Queen Rielle, pushed away from everything she loves, turns to Corien and his promises of glory. Meanwhile, whispers from the empirium slowly drive her mad, urging her to open the Gate. Separated from Audric and Ludivine, she embraces the role of Blood Queen and her place by Corien's side, determined to become the monster the world believes her to be.

In the future, Eliana arrives in the Empire's capital as a broken shell of herself. Betrayed and abandoned, she fights to keep her power at bay—and away from Corien, who will stop at nothing to travel back in time to Rielle, even if that means destroying her daughter.

But when the mysterious Prophet reveals themselves at last, everything changes, giving Rielle and Eliana a second chance for salvation—or the destruction their world has been dreading.

The incredible conclusion to the trilogy that started with the instant New York Times bestsellers Furyborn and Kingsbane!

In this epic finale to the Empirium Trilogy from New York Times bestselling author Claire Legrand, two queens, separated by a thousand years must face their ultimate destinies.

My Review:
Wow, this book was so fantastic! I've really enjoyed this trilogy, and I had a great time reading this book! I was a little apprehensive, because both Rielle and Eliana are is really bad situations when Kingsbane ended. But I had to see how they would get out of them!

I think in this book we had the most perspectives. We started with Rielle and Eliana in the first book, we got a few more in the next, and this one, well, we had some side, but important characters, and I really enjoyed how the story came together!

Rielle hasn't been my favourite character, and she is the Blood Queen, there's a darkness in her. But the way Corien manipulates her, it's hard to blame her for what she does, and that she does break away is really fantastic, and if not, things could've been so much worse. It was still heartbreaking, but I'm glad that she did!

Oh, man, that ending! That was just killer, that climax, as well as the following chapters. It was bittersweet, because time travel does have a cost. As well as what Rielle had to do. But the things that she mentioned right before, well, makes me wonder if we're going to get a spin off book or series?

This was a really great read, and I need to read that 2.5 book! And more by Claire Legrand!

Week 44 Review: Bending the Paw

Make way for the long paw of the law as police officer Megan Luz and her K-9 partner Brigit investigate a baffling new mystery in Bending the Paw, by Diane Kelly.

A MURDER WITHOUT A BODY IS LIKE A DOG WITHOUT A BONE

A bloodbath is a shocking new challenge for Megan and Brigit when Detective Audrey Jackson calls them to the scene of what could only be a brutal murder. But the one thing the nightmarish scene is missing is a victim. The frantic homeowner's husband is gone, seemingly without a trace—and so is the money he was holding. Has a vicious killer committed what might just be the perfect crime?

Meanwhile, it's hailing cats and dogs all over Fort Worth, and roofing contractors have descended on the city in droves. With plenty of damage and continuing storms, work delays are building up like so much runoff, but Megan is suspicious that one roofer may be a scam artist. Determined to leash every lawbreaker she and her K-9 partner find, Megan is building a case for prosecution, all while Brigit has her nose to the ground for a murderer…

My Review:
I've really enjoyed this series, ever since I started it. I just love how we get a bad guy's perspective, Megan's, and then Brigit's. I love Megan and Brigit's relationship, and I love watching them solve crimes. It's a great cozy mystery read!

Once we have the prologue, which chapter 1 we dive right back where we ended with the previous book, which was really fantastic, I loved watching them tell her family their news! And watching the wedding planning in between solving crime was really great!

I had a suspicion about the main case. I just didn't want it to go one way, so I though of a possibility where it didn't. And when Megan thinks of it, well, I was pretty glad, because like I said, I didn't want it to go in that one direction!

The way that the smaller case was solved was pretty poetic, and I enjoyed how it, and the main mystery, were solved. Megan was smart and she was through, and I enjoyed seeing Megan get another win, to get more experience under her belt, to one day make her goal and dream of becoming a detective!

Oh, and one little side note. I don't read much contemporaries. So I don't know how much it'd mean to you to say that this is the first book I've read that's mentioned Covid. Given that it starts on Valentine's Day, and this mention, and it seemed to be in the early days, meaning it was this year, 2020, instead of 2021. So it was a little weird. But I just wanted to mention it!

This was a really great, fun read, I really enjoyed it, and I can't wait for the next installment!

Week 44 Reviews: Something Borrowed, Proven Guilty

From Goodreads:
Sinister forces interfere with Billy and Georgia's wedding.

There's no love lost between Harry Dresden, the only wizard in the Chicago phone book, and the White Council of Wizards, who find him brash and undisciplined. But war with the vampires has thinned their ranks, so the Council has drafted Harry as a Warden and assigned him to look into rumors of black magic in the Windy City.

As Harry adjusts to his new role, another problem arrives in the form of the tattooed and pierced daughter of an old friend, all grown-up and already in trouble. Her boyfriend is the only suspect in what looks like a supernatural assault straight out of a horror film. Malevolent entities that feed on fear are loose in Chicago, but it's all in a day's work for a wizard, his faithful dog, and a talking skull named Bob....

My Review:
Yeah, I really enjoyed continuing this series! The full length stories are just getting bigger and bigger, and they're causing the equivalent effort and damage in that increase to Harry. The poor dude is just getting put through the wringer, and what I'm trying to say with this is that it's getting worse.

This book gets pretty complicated. They've all been like that, but there's a bit less to explain now that we're 8 books in, and so more can happen. Well, plus there's a bigger page count. I can't believe that Harry can juggle all of these pieces!

I loved the role that the Carpenter ladies played in this book. Which is great, since Harry has been avoiding them since the last book they were in. Though I wasn't expecting the direction that it went! We learned a lot about Charity, and why she has animosity towards Harry. And Molly, well, I'm really excited to spend more time with her, and see Harry in a different role as teacher!

Between his new role as Warden, having to deal with dark magic, as well as the Fae, well, it wasn't unexpected all the shenanigan's that went down with this book. There's a few fallouts like with Murph, so I need to read the next book as soon as I can!

These were more fantastic reads in the series, and I can't wait to continue on!

Week 44 Review: Revenge & Rapture

From Goodreads:
Ash is tightening the noose on her enemies…
… and losing her grip on reality.

Ash's revenge plans for Chariot and Isaac Montefiore take a surreal turn when Isaac's wife hires Ash to retrieve an item that Isaac is obsessed with finding. Ash takes the job, but this quest throws her back into Levi's path and puts Rafael in grave danger.

Meanwhile, Ash runs across a crime victim who possesses mysterious magic. Ash's search for the attacker once again pits her against the Queen of Hearts and sends Ash down the rabbit hole of what's real. Sanity is highly overrated, anyway, right?

To top it all off, Ash's mother is being blackmailed by someone threatening to expose Ash as a Rogue unless Talia resigns from her political career for good. Talk about putting the "fun" in family dysfunction.

Secrets, vengeance, and magic collide in the final chapter of The Jezebel Files. With love, family, and her enemy's immortality on the line, a con set in motion fifteen years ago comes to an explosive conclusion, and Ash only has one chance to come out alive.

My Review:
Yeah, I loved reading this book! It was a really fantastic end to the series, a lot happens, and I just enjoyed it so much! I loved seeing these characters work and fight for the world and for their happiness, it was just so fantastic!

Of course, the main plot is dealing with the Jezebel stuff, finding a way to take down Levi's dad, which takes a few different routes. Then there's the case of Talia being blackmailed because Ash is supposedly a Rogue. Oh, and because of the above, a bit of a clash with the Queen of Hearts, just to make things interesting!

But it's also Ash's relationship with Levi, which really took a hit with the ending of the last book. It was hard to watch them interact with each other here, they've really done a number on one another. But I really enjoyed that they made it out Ok!

That ending was really great! I loved how well planned it was, for how short a time that they had to pull it all together. And I didn't really expect where it would end, but it's so satisfying, and I'm excited for Ash and her future!

This was such a great read, and I'm excited to pick up Deborah Wilde's next series!

Week 44 Review: Take Me With You

From Goodreads:
Eden, Eli, Marwan, and Ilanka barely know each other beyond having a class or two together. But when they are all summoned via messaging app to an empty classroom after school, they find a small cube sitting on a desk. Its sides light up with rules for them:

'Do not tell anyone about the device. Never leave the device unattended.'

And then, 'Take me with you... or else.'

At first they think it's some kind of prank or a social experiment orchestrated by the school administration. Still, they follow its instructions until the newly-formed group starts to splinter. Nobody has time for these games - their lives are complicated enough. But the device seems increasingly invested in the private details of their lives. And disobeying its rules has scary - even life-threatening--consequences...

My Review:
This book was such a wild ride! The synopsis was really intriguing, I wanted to find out what the device's purpose was, what it could do-and what the characters would do as a result. Plus there's the unknown threat that it hangs over their heads, it added a flavour of thriller to this book which was really great!

We did rotate on who was narrating this book, so we got to see all 4 of these guys as they navigated life with this device. I loved their various journeys, there's fear and there is racism, and it was just so great to read!

There were a number of tricky tricky situations in this book. The device was creepy, and I loved how this story was told, because we got manipulated, and things weren't exactly how they seemed, and that was just so great to read!

Honestly, I feel like this could use a sequel. There's a few unanswered questions as to who was behind this. We did get a lot answered in that ending, which was a bit brutal, by the way, but I would really like to have just a little bit more answered, but it's not 100% needed. I'm just a little weird like that!

This was such a great read, I really enjoyed it, and I'd be thrilled to read more by Tara Altebrando!

Week 44 Review: We Hunt the Flame

From Goodreads:
People lived because she killed. People died because he lived.

Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the king. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways. Both Zafira and Nasir are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya—but neither wants to be.

War is brewing in Arawiya, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the king on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds—and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine. Set in a richly detailed world inspired by ancient Arabia, We Hunt the Flame is a gripping debut of discovery, conquering fear, and taking identity into your own hands.

My Review:
This book was such a fantastic read! I loved this world, it was so interesting to read about, and the characters were amazing as well! I just couldn't put it down! I mean the mirrored statements about people living and dying because they were there, I just had to read it!

This world and characters were just amazing. I loved how well Hafsah Faizal wrote them, they were detailed and intricate and introduced me to a world with influences from the real one that I don't see too often, and it was just so easy to read!

This book had multiple slow builds. For the plot to get going, and for the romance, which makes total sense, this is the first book in the series. And it'll be interesting in the 2nd book, with everything established, how quickly the plot will progress in that book. I can't wait to find out!

And that ending! Man, was it so excellent! And then we got that epilogue, and I just can't wait to see how that whole situation is going to play out, because it's going to do a lot in the story, or else why would it be there? I'm so excited to find out!

This was a fantastic book, I enjoyed reading it so much, and I need to read book 2 as soon as possible!

Week 44 Review: In the Hall With the Knife

From Goodreads:
A murderer could be around every corner in this thrilling YA trilogy based on the board game CLUE!

When a storm strikes at Blackbrook Academy, an elite prep school nestled in the woods of Maine, a motley crew of students—including Beth "Peacock" Picach, Orchid McKee, Vaughn Green, Sam "Mustard" Maestor, Finn Plum, and Scarlet Mistry—are left stranded on campus with their headmaster. Hours later, his body is found in the conservatory and it's very clear his death was no accident. With this group of students who are all hiding something, nothing is as it seems, and everyone has a motive for murder. Fans of the CLUE board game and cult classic film will delight in Diana Peterfreund's modern reimagining of the brand, its characters, and the dark, magnificent old mansion with secrets hidden within its walls.

My Review:
Yeah, I loved reading this book! Clue is my favourite board game, and movie. I've seen that movie so many times! So having a version of it in book form, well, I really loved that! We have all of the named characters lined up from the other sources-the only one I couldn't match up was Orchid.

All of these characters had secrets, it seemed. And I really enjoyed being in all of their heads, learning about them. Because they could all potentially be the killer, though when you're in their heads, well, at least I didn't suspect them during those times, because I'm easily lead by what a character is thinking. And when we switch which character we're following, well, we change who could be suspected. So that's fun!

I was a little confused as to Vaughn and what happened with his twin. After all, when we're in the other character's perspectives, we don't know that he has a twin. So I'm not sure if I'm correct as to when the first switch happened, though I do know when the second did. And I have a poor memory for details, so I don't remember all of the conflict that he caused. This is more of a my poor memory thing, because this is a pretty great story device!

Wow, I was not expecting that ending! Once we had the clues, it all made sense, but we didn't get that one very big, vital clue, until right near the end. But it did make sense, and while it's a bittersweet ending, it was a satisfying one!

This was such a great read, and I can't wait to continue the series!

Week 44 Review: Ultraviolet

Once upon a time there was a girl who was special.

This is not her story.

Unless you count the part where I killed her.

Sixteen-year-old Alison has been sectioned in a mental institute for teens, having murdered the most perfect and popular girl at school. But the case is a mystery: no body has been found, and Alison's condition is proving difficult to diagnose. Alison herself can't explain what happened: one minute she was fighting with Tori -- the next she disintegrated. Into nothing. But that's impossible. Right?

My first review of Ultraviolet
My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! I vaguely remembered what happened from my first read, but I forgot the details, like that Sebastian Faraday was posing as a scientist, when in reality, on Earth he was a janitor. Loved getting those details again, which means that I can now read the sequel, which I'm so excited about!

So I knew that Alison wasn't crazy, and that Tori disintegrated, but that she wasn't dead, though Alison didn't know that. I just wasn't sure if Alison had synesthesia or if it was an supernatural ability that was very close. I'm glad that it was the former, because that's real, and is something that could be explained to her doctor to prove that she wasn't crazy. So that was great! And while her mom's explanation of why she acted like she did made sense, she still hurt her daughter a lot, which was hard to forgive.

Going on this journey with Alison, the wondering if she's a killer, if she's crazy, and learning about synesthesia, developing that relationship with Sebastian, I just really enjoyed reading it! Of course, while she's spilling her secrets, he's keeping his pretty close to the chest, at least for most of this book.

Oh, man, that ending! It's a little heartbreaking, that she and Sebastian were separated like that, but I have read the synopsis of Quicksilver, and he's back, so I hope that they're able to reunite, because I want them to be happy, darn it!

Loved this book, and I can't wait to see where things go from here!
