Week 17 Review: Fat Girl on a Plane

Fat.

High school senior Cookie Vonn's post-graduation dreams include getting out of Phoenix, attending Parsons and becoming the next great fashion designer. But in the world of fashion, being fat is a cardinal sin. It doesn't help that she's constantly compared to her supermodel mother—and named after a dessert.

Thanks to her job at a fashion blog, Cookie scores a trip to New York to pitch her portfolio and appeal for a scholarship, but her plans are put on standby when she's declared too fat to fly. Forced to turn to her BFF for cash, Cookie buys a second seat on the plane. She arrives in the city to find that she's been replaced by the boss's daughter, a girl who's everything she's not—ultrathin and superrich. Bowing to society's pressure, she vows to lose weight, get out of the friend zone with her crush, and put her life on track.

Skinny.

Cookie expected sunshine and rainbows, but nothing about her new life is turning out like she planned. When the fashion designer of the moment offers her what she's always wanted—an opportunity to live and study in New York—she finds herself in a world full of people more interested in putting women down than dressing them up. Her designs make waves, but her real dream of creating great clothes for people of all sizes seems to grow more distant by the day.

Will she realize that she's always had the power to make her own dreams come true?

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! I've really enjoyed Kelly deVos's other books, and this story about a teenager's self image and problems with weight for herself and those that she interacts with, yeah, I had to pick it, considering how much I could relate to that! 

It is honestly hard to weigh more then is considered healthy, something that I've struggled with for most of my life, basically since I became aware of it. So it was a bittersweet hurt to watch Cookie go on this journey, because the non-physical issues you had before you lost the weight, there's still going to be there when you lose it, you have to work on yourself as well to be happy in your own skin.

That Cookie put in all this effort to lose the weight and get skinny, and then her life isn't what she wanted, I just wanted to give her a hug, That she wants to get into the fashion world, that's about the worst place to be for self-confidence.

I loved the dual time line of Cookie before and after the weight loss. We got to see why she did it, but we also got to see what thing s were like afterwards. I really enjoyed her going on this journey, and finding a way to get what she wants and be happy.

This was an amazing read and I can't wait to read more by Kelly deVos!

Will the Time Come #620, April 20th

A YA thriller about a kickass group of teens battling a ravenous group of zombies.

In the next few hours, one of three things will happen.

1--We'll be rescued (unlikely)

2--We'll freeze to death (maybe)

3--We'll be eaten by thin and athletic zombies (odds: excellent)

Vivian Ellenshaw is fat, but she knows she doesn't need to lose weight, so she's none too happy to find herself forced into a weight-loss camp's van with her ex-best friend, Allie, a meathead jock who can barely drive, and the camp owner's snobby son. And when they arrive at Camp Featherlite at the start of the worst blizzard in the history of Flagstaff, Arizona, it's clear that something isn't right.

Vee barely has a chance to meet the other members of her pod, all who seem as unhappy to be at Featherlite as she does, when a camper goes missing down by the lake. Then she spots something horrifying outside in the snow. Something...that isn't human. Plus, the camp's supposed "miracle cure" for obesity just seems fishy, and Vee and her fellow campers know they don't need to be cured. Of anything.

Even worse, it's not long before Camp Featherlite's luxurious bungalows are totally overrun with zombies. What starts out as a mission to unravel the camp's secrets turns into a desperate fight for survival--and not all of the Featherlite campers will make it out alive.

Why the time hasn't come yet...
I don't know, I love her writing and it sounds good and it's a standalone, and I'm pretty sure I own it. Hopefully I read it soon! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Wacky Witches Readathon October 2022 Sign Up

OK, so I got 33 posts in 7 days, and it was a pretty good week, things have settled down, my kitchen isn't finished yet, but the countertop has to be ordered, so things are on pause for right now. But it was nice to take things a bit easier. There's some really amazing books coming out tomorrow that I'm dying to read, eek! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read After the Bite and The Golden Enclaves.

Week 38 Review: Go Hunt Me

My Review:
This book was spooky and fantastic! I've enjoyed Kelly deVos's books before, and I was excited what she would do with a mystery, and she didn't disappoint! Set in the backdrop of the house where the inspiration for Dracula lived, this book had all the atmosphere it needed to make an amazing book!

We meet this group of friends who are making a short film, all of them in some way aiming to use it to get into college. But only some of them do. But when a go fund me and a famous actress come together, they get a chance to lengthen their film for a better chance to get into college. But things start going wrong as soon as they arrive in Romania. 

A big part of this book was of monsters, of the guys in the movie industry and the power that they have, and how the girls who have to work twice as hard to accomplish half as much. How Jax got in with a recut version of her movie, and she didn't, since he cut the monologues that pointed out this power dynamic out. 

Almost all of these characters were holding secrets, some more deadlier than others. And as the bodies started to pile up, some questionable choices were made, and I loved watching the chaos unfold, I had to know what was going to happen next! 

That final reveal? That was stunning, and I loved how that turned everything that we thought we knew on its heels. I would've really liked more details about how it was all done, and how things worked out, but loved that ending! 

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by Kelly deVos!
