Random Reads #460, September 10th

Random Reads is a monthly meme (that I'm going to do weekly) hosted by I'm Loving Books to read some books that have been on our TBR piles for a long time. Using Random.org, I got 1149 which turned out to be Deception's Princess by Esther Friesner! It's been on my TBR pile since January 2nd, 2013, and I added it because I enjoy her writing! The Story: I got Spirit's Princess from NetGalley, and while it took me a while to get around to reading it, I did, and then yeah, I really loved it, and yeah, then I had to read the intertwined series Princess of Myth, each duology a series in and of itself! So good! I can't wait for more!

OK, so I got 42 posts in 7 days, and yeah, it was a fantastic week, and a fantastic year! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read How to Be Popular, Pants on Fire, Fallen, At Grave's End, Avalon, Bad Attitude, Fire, and Murder Game.

It is not a peaceful time in the Dells. The young King Nash clings to his throne while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him. The mountains and forests are filled with spies and thieves and lawless men.

This is where Fire lives. With a wild, irresistible appearance and hair the color of flame, Fire is the last remaining human monster. Equally hated and adored, she had the unique ability to control minds, but she guards her power, unwilling to steal the secrets of innocent people. Especially when she has so many of her own.

Then Prince Brigan comes to bring her to King City, The royal family needs her help to uncover the plot against the king. Far away from home, Fire begins to realize there's more to her power than she ever dreamed. Her power could save the kingdom.

If only she weren't afraid of becoming the monster her father was.

Week 1 Review: Spirit's Chosen

From Goodreads:
Himiko's world is falling apart. An attack by the Ookami clan has left many from her tribe dead or enslaved. And those who remain in the ransacked Matsu village are certain they've angered the gods. Amid the chaos and fear, Himiko hatches a plan to save her beloved tribe. Traveling through the treacherous wilderness with her best friend Kaya, their only goal is to free her clanfolk from the Ookami. At every turn she encounters other tribes and unforeseen challenges. But just when it seems that she will outwit Ryu, the cruel Ookami leader, she is captured. Held agains her will, Himiko starts to realize that not all of the Ookami are her enemies and every step of her unconventional journey has prepared her for something greater than life as a princess. Though she may not see her path as clearly as the spirits seem to, there's more adventure (and even unexpected love) for this young shamaness and warrior.

My Review:
Oh, I really enjoyed this book! It did break my heart, because that "unexpected love" Daimu, he dies, and somehow he was connected to the guy that she's been dreaming about before, and yeah, that was really sad, that Ryu, was stubborn, and didn't listen to her warnings about the coming disaster, and that's why Daimu died!

This was a really great book, and the outrages that Ryu caused, from his treatment of Daimu's uncle's bones, and of her people, and the ones that Ryu saw as slaves, that was just hard to read. But his family was comparably kind to her brother, so that was a small mercy, though he was used against Himiko.

I loved how Himiko grows up in this book, to see beyond the prejudices of different tribes, of the one that killed so many of her family, becoming the shaman and leader of her tribe, and her mom, being broken over all that the Ookami did to her family.

I loved how it ended with her going to basically rule all the tribes, to bring them together, but that they'd all have their individual leaders like her dad and Ryu, but that they were all together, and that it was a fulfilment of her and Daimu's dream of better things!

I really enjoyed this book, and I don't know why it took me so long to read it!! So good!!

Week 1 Review: Nobody's Prize

Helen quickly faces all sorts of danger. There are battles to be fought, as well as an encounter with a terrifying murderous princess. With her beauty blossoming, Helen's journey takes her beyond the mythology of the Golden Fleece to Athens, where her very future as Queen of Sparta is threatened.

My Review:
This was a really fantastic book! There were hard parts to read, and some really great parts, but when it all came together, it was just really great! Struggles, triumphs, and just plain growing up, all featured in this book!

Loved that she wanted to go on the trip with her brothers on The Argo with Jason, and how she starts having her period, which brings about the end of her pretending to be a guy. And that princess that she meets, well, she's a bit crazy! So glad that worked out in the end!

I just don't see how she goes on to marry the guy, after all, how he treated that guy with over the mirror, that was really horrible, and that kind of character flaw, well, it doesn't go away easily, and seeing that he was nobility, he didn't have any reason to actually work on it!

I still don't know how this Helen could grow to be the Helen that inspired that war. Sure, she's grow up since the last book, and will continue to grow, but with a war like that, she'd still do something, and while I know hardly anything about the war (like it's name) I don't think that Helen did anything except be the one that they fought over. Yeah. But that is a plus on the book's side!

Enjoyed this book so freaking much, so good! Now I just want more of the overarching Princesses of Myth series!

Week 52 Review: Nobody's Princess

She is beautiful, she is a princess, and Aphrodite is her favorite goddess, but something in Helen of Sparta just itches for more out of life. Not one to count on the gods—or her looks—to take care of her, Helen sets out to get what she wants with steely determination and a sassy attitude. That same attitude makes Helen a few enemies—such as the self-proclaimed "son of Zeus" Theseus—but it also intrigues, charms, and amuses those who become her friends, from the famed huntress Atalanta to the young priestess who is the Oracle of Delphi.

In Nobody's Princess, author Esther Friesner deftly weaves together history and myth as she takes a new look at the girl who will become Helen of Troy. The resulting story offers up adventure, humor, and a fresh and engaging heroine you cannot help but root for.

My Review:
Really fantastic book! I loved reading about Helen, though this girl? I don't know how she's going to grow to be Helen of Troy, who was the one that they fought over, not someone who would so do something. And this girl seems like she'd do something!

Loved Helen's attitude towards life, going full force after it, not sitting there and letting it happen to her. Gets her into a few situations, but yeah, she is a princess, who's going to be Queen, which gives her a bit of privilege!

These characters were awesome, what they did, was really great! Like when the greeter guy before the Oracle said something to her brothers along the lines of their inheritance, and their were horrified and angry, because in their royal family, Helen is to inherit-they'd only inherit if something happened to her. Of course, I'm sure the guy didn't know that, because it's not the common practice. But, oh, well! That was them being great overprotective and sweet brothers!

Just love the mix of history and fact, and entertaining book that this book, and this series, and all books that I've read by Esther Friesner, are! It's just what makes these books special, and so great to read! Loved it!

Such a great book, I really need to read more!

OK, so I got 28 posts in 7 days, which was nice, and lots of great books. Though I wonder why I'm piling so much on myself. Starting to get really worn out, but I love reading. Not fun. But oh, well. What about you guys? Happy reading!
