Week 48 Review: Devils Unto Dust

Life out here is hard.
So you have to be harder.

 Willie has always survived. No matter what life in Glory, Texas, has thrown at her. The sickness that swept through the state and turned most living creatures into terrifying shakes. Her own mother succumbing to the disease. Her father disappearing into saloons and gambling and liquor. Willie survives. And she'll make sure her younger brothers and sister do, too.

 Then her good-for-nothing father steals a fortune from one of the most merciless shake hunters in town, and Willie is on the hook for his debt. With two young hunters as guide, Willie sets out across the desert to find him, and make him pay up.

 But the desert holds many dangers—and the shakes are only a few of them. This is no place for the weak.

My Review:
I had such a great time reading this book! This was such a great read, and that it's a historical dystopian was pretty cool. That this world got wrecked basically by zombies was really entertaining to read! And this quest for her father for the money that he stole, well, he put her and their entire family at risk.

Willie was such a great character to read about! She's a fighter, but she's also the one who has had to manage the family, since their mom died, and their dad is off working, but mostly drinking away his profits. She's also living in a town run by a sexist, horrible dude. And then she's made to go after her dad to get this money that he stole. Not a fun time! 

Most of this book is the journey there and back. It's a tough time, because between towns, the shakes are out of control there, and it's really unsafe. But she does have guides, brothers, who help her across, even though she might have lied about how much she has to pay them.

I really enjoyed the relationships that she had, with her brother, with Curtis and Ben. They were really great, and I loved watching the newer ones develop, Which was all the more needed, given everything that happened in the end, that was pretty emotional! But a really good, fitting end to the sory! 

This was such a great read, and I can't wait to read more by Emma Berquist!
