Waiting on Wednesday #777, April 1st

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

Cast in Blood by Michelle Sagara
Expected Publication: April 28th, 2026
From Goodreads:
DO NOT MEDDLE IN THE AFFAIRS OF BARRANI

Kaylin has been warned to steer clear of the lords of the Barrani High Court. She’d be more than happy to oblige, but it’s a bit difficult considering she lives with ten of them, all sent to the green to gain power or die. With Kaylin’s help, they finally escaped their imprisonment. But their attempts at freedom had devastating consequences—and a price that has yet to be paid.

The first warning sign is the Consort’s invitation to visit the High Halls—a Barrani invitation, which means an immediate visit.

The second sign is less Kaylin finds Nightshade’s unresponsive body. He hovers on the edge of death, beyond saving through Kaylin’s healing power. No one can explain his state, nor why she’s powerless to save him. And if she and her Barrani friends can’t figure out a way to bring him back, he’ll be lost forever.

Yet even as Kaylin struggles to keep Nightshade from death, there is deeper magic at play, a growing threat with the potential to affect the entire Barrani race. Factions are shifting, new lines are being drawn—and Nightshade’s near assassination is only the beginning. Can Kaylin uncover the nebulous forces that threaten the balance of Barrani—and their entire world—before it’s too late?

Hell to Pay by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Expected Publication: April 28th, 2026
From Goodreads:
When the Devil’s son gets kicked out of Hell, all Hell breaks loose—on Earth.

Lucian “Luke” Teivel isn’t just any exile—he’s Lucifer’s son, freshly banished from Hell with no forwarding address and zero explanation. Now he’s stuck in the human world, paying cosmic penance by working for Infernal Affairs, a secret task force that polices supernatural crime and decides whether the guilty belong in prison…or back in the Pit.

Luke’s doing his best to blend in and not burn his petty annoyances when a new partner storms into his life: Detective Sorcha O’Malley. She’s sharp, stubborn, suspicious—and assigned to keep him from indulging in his more demonic tendencies. But Sorcha carries shadows even Luke can’t read.

Just as they’re settling into their begrudging partnership, college students start dropping across Savannah, Georgia. And every clue points directly at Luke. Someone is framing him—someone with a grudge, a plan, and a very personal reason to send him back to Hell.

To survive the setup, Luke and Sorcha must team up against enemies both infernal and annoyingly human. But as the danger escalates and Sorcha’s secrets inch closer to the surface, Luke faces the worst dilemma

Hand over his new partner to the devil…
Or be relegated to earth forever.

And if he’s not careful? Savannah might wind up with a fresh vacancy in its homicide department—and one very pissed-off Prince of Hell.

We Burned So Bright by T.J. Klune
Expected Publication: April 28th, 2026
From Goodreads:
A heart-wrenching standalone novel by #1 New York Times bestselling author TJ Klune, We Burned So Bright follows an elder gay couple on an end-of-the-world road-trip.

The road stretched out before them. No other cars, just the headlights on the blacktop. Above, the cracked moon in a kaleidoscope sky….

Husbands Don and Rodney have lived a good long life. Together they’ve experienced the highest highs of love and family, and lows so low that they felt like the end of the world.

Now, the world is ending for real. A rogue black hole is coming for Earth and in a month everything and everyone they’ve ever known will be gone.

Suddenly, after 40 years together, Don and Rodney are out of time. They’re in a race against the clock to make it from Maine to Washington State to take care of some unfinished business before it’s all over.

On the road they meet those who refuse to believe death is coming and those who rush to meet it. But there are also people living their final days as best they know how—impromptu weddings, bright burning bonfires, shared meals, and new friends.

And as the black hole draws near, among ball lightning and under a cracked moon in a kaleidoscope sky, Don and Rodney will look back on their lives and ask if their best was good enough.

Is it enough to burn bright if nothing comes from the ashes?

Ms. Mabel Goes Back to the Chopping Block by Jesse Q. Sutanto
Expected Publication: April 28th, 2026
From Goodreads:
A nearly divorced housewife enrolls in culinary school to win back her husband, only to start questioning the strange antics of her classmates in this new novel from the USA Today bestselling author of Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers.

Retirement should mean long-awaited trips to the sapphire waters of Santorini or careening down a sand dune in Dubai. For sixty-three-year-old Mebel, retirement means her husband of more than forty years announcing that he's leaving her for their private chef. Mebel isn’t sure who's the bigger loss.

Not to worry, Mebel has the perfect plan: she’s going to win back her husband. No one knows what he needs better than her—after all, she's been anticipating his needs their whole marriage. And if he wants a wife who can cook (why else would he leave her for a chef?), she will simply go to cooking school. Luckily, class at the renowned Saint Honoré School of Culinary Arts in France starts in just four days!

However, Mebel quickly realizes that her culinary school is not in illustrious Paris but rather in England—and some small village outside of Oxford no less. Despite the less-than-warm welcome from her much younger classmates, Mebel manages to befriend Gemma, the breakout star of the program, who offers to help Mebel on their first day. When Gemma stops showing up to class, Mebel knows she must figure out what—or who—caused her friend’s sudden disappearance. After all, Mebel may not know the first thing about how to cut a potato, but she certainly knows how to identify a fraud, and there’s definitely something fishy going on.

Starlight and Storm by Rachel Greenlaw
Expected Publication: April 28th, 2026
From Goodreads:
Mira is trapped in a deadly situation which could see the end of everything she has fought for. She must enter into one final desperate bargain, but this time, it’s with her greatest enemy, the ruling council. To save her life, her home, and the people she loves most, Mira is forced to compete in a series of terrifying trials filled with dark magic and dangerous monsters.

Her allies are scattered, her people without a home. With Eli lost in another world, Mira must shape herself into a weapon in order to survive. But with the true nature of the ruling council and their ambitions finally revealed, the battle for the future of the Fortunate Isles has become a war. And in war, there is only ever one victor . . .

Our Rogue Fates by Sarah Glenn Marsh
Expected Publication: April 28th, 2026
From Goodreads:
On the hunt for hidden treasure, two former best friends turned adversaries must put the past behind them if they hope to make it home.

This enemies-to-lovers male/male romantic fantasy in the tradition of Tusk Love and Sara Raasch crackles with tension and heat.

When he isn’t training as a Warden to become half the hero his father was, Griff Sayer is in the business of breaking hearts all across the town of Mayfair, although that slows down after settling in with his current boyfriend. Griff's ex-best-friend, Mal Pryce, meanwhile, is in business with whatever or whoever puts good money in his hands. Now in their mid-20s, Griff and Mal have only exchanged scathing looks and carefully barbed jabs since the fight that sent them their separate ways years ago. But all that begins to change when an attack Mal plotted for his shady boss leaves Griff near death and their childhood friend Alys is his savior, forcing them back into each other’s orbit.

Livid at his boss, Mal makes a deal to earn his freedom and Griff’s safety. He has just four weeks to retrieve an ancient treasure from Rotrose Mire, a remote swamp known for its ghostly and beastly dangers, the same treasure Alys’s beloved father Rhun had been searching for when he disappeared for good. Armed with a map and a broken blade of Rhun’s, Mal sets off—with Alys and a reluctant and newly single Griff in tow.

Yet the explosive tension between the two men—along with the dangers of the mire pressing in around them—make for a more difficult journey than any of them could have anticipated. As Griff and Mal peel back their tough facades, and shared feelings heat up in unexpected ways as they learn to trust again, they also realize that someone—or something—seems to be following their path. Someone who doesn’t want them to succeed, no friend to their parents’ old enemies, but also no friend to would-be heroes…

Our Rogue Fates is a second-chance spicy Achillean romance with the questing spirit of Dungeons & Dragons, perfect for fans of Critical Role.

April is ending with some really fantastic books, I love these authors and series, and I'm so excited for them all! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Week 25 Review: Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!

From Goodreads:
An android who knows nothing besides his work in a factory, is given one final week to explore the world before he is forced to undergo mandatory reprogramming, in this bittersweet precursor to TJ Klune's 'In the Lives of Puppets,' now available in trade paperback!

My Review:
I had such a great time reading this story! I didn't know that it existed when I read In the Lives of Puppets, because it isn't technically a series on Goodreads, and I listened to an audiobook from my library. So it wasn't until more recently, when I got my paperback of In the Lives of Puppets, and saw this story on Goodreads, that I picked it up, and loved it!

Loved reading this story and I can't wait to read more by T.J. Klune!

Week 46 Review: The Bones Beneath My Skin

From Goodreads:
A spine-tingling thriller by New York Times bestselling author TJ Klune, about a 10-year-old girl with an impossible power, her father, and an unlikely stranger, who come together to confront the dangerous forces that want her at all costs. A strange story of family, love, comets, and bacon. Perfect for fans of Stranger Things.

In the spring of 1995, Nate Cartwright has lost everything: his parents are dead, his older brother wants nothing to do with him, and he's been fired from his job as a journalist in Washington DC. With nothing left to lose, he returns to his family's summer cabin outside the small mountain town of Roseland, Oregon to try and find some sense of direction. The cabin should be empty. It's not. Inside is a man named Alex. And with him is an extraordinary little girl who calls herself Artemis Darth Vader. Artemis, who isn't exactly as she appears.

Soon it becomes clear that Nate must make a choice: let himself drown in the memories of his past, or fight for a future he never thought possible. Because the girl is special. And forces are descending upon them who want nothing more than to control her.

Week 44 Review: In the Lives of Puppets

From Goodreads:
In a strange little home built into the branches of a grove of trees, live three robots—fatherly inventor android Giovanni Lawson, a pleasantly sadistic nurse machine, and a small vacuum desperate for love and attention. Victor Lawson, a human, lives there too. They're a family, hidden and safe.

The day Vic salvages and repairs an unfamiliar android labelled "HAP," he learns of a shared dark past between Hap and Gio–a past spent hunting humans.

When Hap unwittingly alerts robots from Gio's former life to their whereabouts, the family is no longer hidden and safe. Gio is captured and taken back to his old laboratory in the City of Electric Dreams. So together, the rest of Vic's assembled family must journey across an unforgiving and otherworldly country to rescue Gio from decommission, or worse, reprogramming.

Along the way to save Gio, amid conflicted feelings of betrayal and affection for Hap, Vic must decide for himself: Can he accept love with strings attached?

Inspired by Carlo Collodi's The Adventures of Pinocchio, and like Swiss Family Robinson meets Wall-E, In the Lives of Puppets is a masterful stand-alone fantasy adventure from the beloved author who brought you The House in the Cerulean Sea and Under the Whispering Door.

My Review:
I had such a great time reading this book! I've really enjoyed each T.J. Klune book, and I was excited to pick this one up, of this world with robots that have hunted humans to extinction. I adored this family, they were such vibrant characters! Like how murderous Nurse Ratched was. They were so much fun to read on this adventure!

There are some things that don't make sense, like the origins of Vic and how that all worked. But it's not the type of story to make perfect sense, so if that's something that you need in stories then this one might be a pass. But if you don't mind, or prefer that kind of story, then this one is an option.

Watching as they go on this quest to reclaim his dad, I loved following along. I was rooting for these characters, their interactions were so much fun. Plus the big of romance between Vic and HAP, and how Vic was embarrassed by Rambo and Nurse Ratched. I just adored them!

That ending, man, it was so bittersweet! Just that these memories might not be there, yeah, that was sad. But there was hope, that the future would be better then it was, and that possibility was enough to make up for what they'd lost.

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by T.J. Klune!

Magical Readathon: Orilium:

SeasonAthon Academy:

Phase Out Your TBR:

OK, so I got 50 posts in 7 days, and it was pretty busy, I read a lot, and I read some pretty good books, and I'm happy with this week, and I'm looking forward to this coming week! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Buried Deep and Other Stories!

A thrilling anthology of thirteen short stories that span the worlds of the New York Times bestselling author of the Scholomance trilogy, including a sneak peek at the land where her next novel will be set.

From the dragon-filled Temeraire series and the gothic magical halls of the Scholomance trilogy, through the realms next door to Spinning Silver and Uprooted, this stunning collection takes us from fairy tale to fantasy, myth to history, and mystery to science fiction as we travel through Naomi Novik's most beloved stories. Here, among many others, we encounter:

• A mushroom witch who learns that sometimes the worst thing in the Scholomance can be your roommate.

• The start of the Dragon Corps in ancient Rome, after Mark Antony hatches a dragon's egg and bonds with the hatchling.

• A young bride in the Middle Ages who finds herself gambling with Death for the highest of stakes.

• A delightful reimagining of Pride & Prejudice, in which Elizabeth Bennet captains a Longwing dragon.

• The first glimpse of the world of Abandon, the setting of Novik's upcoming epic fantasy series—a deserted continent populated only by silent and enigmatic architectural mysteries.

Though the stories are vastly different, there is a unifying theme: wrestling with destiny, and the lengths some will go to find their own and fulfill its promise.

Week 37 Review: Somewhere Beyond the Sea

From Goodreads:
Somewhere Beyond the Sea is the hugely anticipated sequel to TJ Klune' The House in the Cerulean Sea, one of the best-loved and best-selling fantasy novels of the past decade. Featuring gorgeous orange sprayed edges!

A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything.

Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one.

He's the master of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there.

Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department In Charge of Magical Youth. And there's the island's sprite, Zoe Chapelwhite, and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children.

But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve.

And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home—one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name that Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from—Arthur knows they're at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart.

Welcome back to Marsyas Island. This is Arthur's story.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea is a story of resistance, lovingly told, about the daunting experience of fighting for the life you want to live and doing the work to keep it.

My Review:
I utterly loved reading this book! I loved the first book, and I was really excited to read Arthur's story, to see things from his perspective. He had a lot of difficult things that happened in his past, and I needed to have his story!

There was some progress made from the first book, but people will be awful, and that public hearing, that was pretty heartbreaking, to hear the details of what happened to him in his own words. That a child was treated like that, was told that it was his fault? Argh!

The family dynamics are a little different, when they bring home a new child, one that uses the word monster as a shield, almost, and wants to be the fun kind of scary, like haunted houses. Which was a complication for them as a parents, especially with Lucy, when they told him he couldn't be a monster.

Oh, but that ending was so satisfying and epic! That truth about the island and the village, and about Zoe, was so wonderful, and I'm glad for that showdown. Sometimes it takes a lot, but having that proof that they were willing to hurt a child, is what is needed for meaningful change. That it ended with their wedding was just adorable!

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by T.J. Klune!
