So this week I want to read Bare Bones, Blaze Erupting, Winter Igniting, Broken, Dangerously Fierce, Obsidio, and Time Bomb.
A newborn's charred remains turn up in a woodstove. A small plane crashes in a North Carolina cornfield on a sunny afternoon. Both pilot and passenger are burned beyond recognition. Week 10 Reviews: Blight
When an agribusiness facility producing genetically engineered food releases a deadly toxin into the environment, seventeen-year-old Tempest Torres races to deliver the cure before time runs out.
Seventeen-year-old Tempest Torres has lived on the AgraStar farm north of Atlanta, Georgia, since she was found outside its gates at the age of five. Now she's part of the security force guarding the fence and watching for scavengers—people who would rather steal genetically engineered food from the Company than work for it. When a group of such rebels accidentally sets off an explosion in the research compound, it releases into the air a blight that kills every living thing in its path—including humans. With blight-resistant seeds in her pocket, Tempest teams up with a scavenger boy named Alder and runs for help. But when they finally arrive at AgraStar headquarters, they discover that there's an even bigger plot behind the blight—and it's up to them to stop it from happening again.
Inspired by current environmental issues, specifically the genetic adjustment of seeds to resist blight and the risks of not allowing natural seed diversity, this is an action-adventure story that is Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake meets Nancy Farmer's House of the Scorpion.
My Review:
This book was so great! The world where companies had exclusive rights to seeds and that they've basically subjugated humanity to work for them, yeah, it's pretty bad. Though there are people who are outside the system!
On one hand, it seems like there's so much to talk about! But on the other, it doesn't, or I can't pick and choose the things that I should mention, which is really hard! This story doesn't take place over a long period of time, the beginning, the rebels attack and the blight is released, the journey with the seeds, being in AgraStar's headquarters, the end!
Tempest thought that AgraStar was good, that they provided jobs and food for their employees. She was blind to their faults, but with Alder, she discovers them! That it turns out that she's the daughter of a highly placed employee at AgraStar complicates things, as does the cloning, but it made the story to good!
The way that this book ends, it's begging for a sequel! Sure, they have the seeds that are resistant to the blight and they aren't with AgraStar anymore, free or captive, either. It just feels like there should be more, especially with the cloning aspect of it all!
I absolutely enjoyed this book, it was so incredible!

Week 13 Review: Salvage
Salvage is a thrilling, surprising, and thought-provoking debut novel that will appeal to fans of Across the Universe, by Beth Revis, and The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood. This is literary science fiction with a feminist twist, and it explores themes of choice, agency, rebellion, and family.
Ava, a teenage girl living aboard the male-dominated, conservative deep space merchant ship Parastrata, faces betrayal, banishment, and death. Taking her fate into her own hands, she flees to the Gyre, a floating continent of garbage and scrap in the Pacific Ocean.
This is a sweeping and harrowing novel about a girl who can't read or write or even withstand the forces of gravity. What choices will she make? How will she build a future on an earth ravaged by climate change?
Named by the American Booksellers Association as a Spring 2014 Indies Introduce Pick.
My Review:
So I enjoyed this book a lot! It was just that the beginning, that world that she was in, was just so unfair, and she only understood the surface of that, that made the beginning hard to read. There was also the use of "so," but I got used to that!
The idea of multiple wives, after everything that's been happening after the past century, sucks. That Luck's dad was the one she was to marry, not Luck, is just horrible. But he was wrong when he said that mean thing. She's a human being, and she matters!
So I really enjoyed Ava's journey, of how she learned how different her world is from the rest of us, basically, from society's roles, and what she is truly capable of. Her grandfather's book, while horrible, did illustrate some differences!
I really with in that ending, that she had told Luck and the others that she was a captain. Because I thing that would've blown their minds more then her refusal to be his second wife! And she earned that!
Really great book, great touch on what she named the ship, and I can't wait for the companion book!

I just read After the End, and yeah, it was pretty spectacular! Loved it a lot, can't wait for book #2!
