The Story: I was prompted to read a book and Dear Haiti, Love Alaine fit so I read it, and loved it and loved every book I've read by Maritza and her sister, and I can't wait to read more by them! I'm doing a post for each of them, just in case they write books by themselves.

Week 14 Review: The Summer I Ate the Rich
Just add garlic, lemon, and a dash of the one percent.
This smart, biting novel, which features multicast narration, explores what happens when a Haitian American girl uses her previously hidden zombie abilities to exact revenge on the wealthy elites who've caused her family pain.
Brielle Petitfour loves to cook. But with a chronically sick mother and bills to pay, becoming a chef isn't exactly a realistic career path.
When Brielle's mom suddenly loses her job, Brielle steps in and uses her culinary skills to earn some extra money. The rich families who love her cooking praise her use of unique flavors and textures, which keep everyone guessing what's in Brielle's dishes. The secret ingredient? Human flesh.
Written by the storytelling duo Maika Moulite and Maritza Moulite, The Summer I Ate the Rich is a modern-day fable inspired by Haitian zombie lore that scrutinizes the socioeconomic and racial inequity that is the foundation of our society. Just like Brielle's clients, it will have you What's for dinner?
This was such a fantastic read! The concept set up in the synopsis was really intriguing, and I had to see where the story was going to go! I really enjoyed getting to know Brielle and her story! That we got little inserts from her sisters.
This story dealt with two main things, Brielle's story, as a Haitian American with an immigrant mother on the edge of poverty dealing with a insurance not paying for her mom's medical care, who wants to be a chef, and she's a zombie. Then there's the story of her mother, of her first husband, and then Brielle's father, as told by her sisters. At first, it was to show how these characters got to where they were, in America, how Brielle is a zombie/zonbi. But it became a pretty important part of the story at the end!
Her relationship with the rich was interesting, spending all this time so close to them, but definitely not being a part of them, and a definite feel of her being judged lesser because she's not rich. Then she gets a phone connected to the uber-rich, uses it to donate to charity, which gets her pulled into working for that company. Which gets her closer in orbit to Preston Banks, a part of the latest generation of the Banks family who her mom worked for, whose father's money she was donating. Yeah, that was so delightful!
The title is a bit misleading, because Brielle isn't the one eating the rich. Instead, she's taking it from the dead rich, cooking it, and serving it to the living rich. Which is on about the same level as if she'd been the one eating it, but from a different area. But it was still a fantastic story, and so satisfying to read, especially that ending, seeing her prosper!
Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by Maika Moulite and Maritza Moulite!

Week 36 Review: One of the Good Ones

Week 12 Review: The Black Girl Survives In This One

My Review:
This was such a great collection of stories! I've only read from a couple of these authors before, mainly Justina Ireland, but I had a fantastic time reading these stories-the theme of the black girls surviving in these horror stories was so great!
I don't read a lot of horror, or watch much, but the first few stories endings weren't my favourite. Like, the title is correct, they survived to the end of the story, but after the story ends? Are they going to survive much longer after that? They might not, and that kind of ending isn't my favourite, but right until the end they were fantastic!
I loved the variety of horrors there were, from the The Scottish Play, to zombies to demon deals. They were all so creepy and at times terrifying, and I was rooting for these characters even if I knew that they were going to survive, they deserved it!
I think my favourites were Black Pride by Justina Ireland, and Foxhunt by Charlotte Nicole Davis. In the former, the whole story, and what it turned out to be was so awesome to read. And the latter, yeah, it was just so satisfying, and I was cheering Flex on, I couldn't get enough! It was a great end to the anthology, I keep thinking about it!

Week 10 Reviews:
A River Enchanted
OK, so I got 36 posts in 7 days, and it was a pretty great week, though there was a hiccup. I dropped my tablet, and because the case was a bit broken, the screen broken. I dropped it off on last Friday. I was told it should be done by Tuesday. When I wasn't called Wednesday, I called, no answer, just a voice machine that said they were at limited hours. I called over 20 times over the next 3 days, and emailed on Thursday. Finally on Saturday, I called and was answered, and that the repair was half done, the old screen was out. So I tried to pick up that day-only to find they'd closed an hour early that day. When it's a 40 minute drive into town. And the car I can drive won't get here till Wednesday, and I won't get another ride in the car I can't drive sooner because that's how I got there Saturday and I won't get another chance. I just really want my tablet back! Plus it's going to cost half the price of the tablet, and it's just a really annoying and frustrating situation! What about you guys? Happy reading!

What she learns about Haiti's proud history as the world's first black republic (with its even prouder people) is one thing, but what she learns about her own family is another. Suddenly, the secrets Alaine's mom has been keeping, including a family curse that has spanned generations, can no longer be avoided.
It's a lot to handle, without even mentioning that Alaine is also working for her aunt's nonprofit, which sends underprivileged kids to school and boasts one annoyingly charming intern.
But if anyone can do it all…it's Alaine.
My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! Alaine was such a character, she was sassy and fun to be around, and I had a great time reading her story, of an alternative history where Marie-Louise made it back to Haiti, and how her descendents were cursed because of it. It was a really great read!
This is a epistolary novel, told from diary entries of Alaine, of text and postcard exchanges, of written school assignments. So while it's around 400 pages, it was really quick and easy to read, and I had a great time with it!
A good portion of the book happens before Alaine gets to Haiti, but it was setting up everything, her divorced parents, her mom's public, on camera slap, and Alaine as a character. I really enjoyed getting to know her and her world, but when she got to Haiti, boy did everything take off!
Almost all of the plot of this book is about what happened in the past-the curse, and of Alaine's parents and their friends trying to release them from the curse. Because of what's going on now, Alaine takes on the task that her parent's tried-and failed to do. It wasn't as easy as it looked, and boy were there setbacks. And that ending, was oh, so bittersweet! But it was such a great read!
This was a really great read, and I can't wait to see what these sisters write next!
