Week 36 Review: This Savage Song

From Goodreads:
The city of Verity has been overrun with monsters, born from the worst of human evil. In North Verity, the Corsai and the Malchai run free. Under the rule of Callum Harker, the monsters kill any human who has not paid for protection. In the South, Henry Flynn hunts the monsters who cross the border into his territory, aided by the most dangerous and darkest monsters of them all—the Sunai, dark creatures who use music to steal their victim's souls.

As one of only three Sunai in existence, August Flynn has always wanted to play a bigger role in the war between the north and the south. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate Harker, daughter of the leader of North Verity, August jumps on it.

When Kate discovers August's secret, the pair find themselves running for their lives and battling monsters from both sides of the wall. As the city dissolves into chaos, it's up to them to foster a peace between monsters and humans.

A unique, fast-paced adventure that looks at the monsters we face every day—including the monster within.

My Review:
I really enjoyed this book! I loved the world, and the characters, and of course I loved the writing! This was a really fantastic book, and I can't wait to read the sequel(s)! The ending was half triumphant, a tiniest bit of defeat, and the rest, cliffhanger! I need more!

August and his siblings, they were interesting. They were the rarest of all the monsters, Sunai, and the ones most capable of pretending to be human. Which August was the one that wanted that the most. And there were secrets, and strangeness, to them. So great to read!

I really enjoyed Kate, she wanted to be with her father, but there was also something of a mystery in her past. She was strong and confident, and worked for what she wanted! She was also pretty smart, even when things didn't go her way!

Really enjoyed how everything worked in this book, from the city of Verity, the politics and the monsters, and how the world is! And what that meant for this book, and how it all came together! Yeah, I can't wait to read more!

This book was so fantastic, and I love it, and I wants to reads the sequel!

Week 36 Reviews: The Night is Alive, The Night is Forever

From Goodreads:
Midnight in Savannah

It's a city of beauty, history & haunting's. And one of the most haunted places in Savannah is a tavern called The Dragonslayer, built in the 1750s. The current owner, Gus Anderson, is a descendant of the original innkeeper and his pirate brother, Blue.

Gus summons his granddaughter, Abigail, home from Virginia, where she's studying at the FBI Academy. When she arrives, she's devastated to find him dead. Murdered. But Abby soon learns that Gus isn't the only one to meet a brutal and untimely end; there've been at least two other victims. Then Captain Blue Anderson starts making ghostly appearances, and the FBI's paranormal investigation unit, The Krewe of Hunters, sends in Agent Malachi Gordon.

Abby and Malachi have a similar ability to connect with the dead and a similar stubbornness. Sparks immediately begin to fly: sparks of attraction and discord. But as the death toll rises, they have to trust each other or they, too, might find themselves among the dead haunting old Savannah!

From Goodreads:
A Ghost Rider in the Sky?

What happened here, on a historic ranch outside Nashville, during the Civil War? And what's happening now?

Olivia Gordon works at the Horse Farm, a facility that assists patients with mental and physical recovery; her specialty is animal therapy. She's always loved her job, always felt safe...until now.

People are dying, starting with the facility's founder, whose body is discovered in a ravine on the property-site of a massacre in 1862. And before every death, Liv sees a horse and rider, wearing a soldier's garb, in the night sky.... Warning? Omen? Or clue?

Liv calls in her cousin Malachi and his Krewe, an FBI unit of paranormal investigators, to discover the truth. New Krewe member Dustin Blake knows they need Liv's involvement in the case, yet he's worried about her safety. Because he and Liv quickly become more than colleagues...and he doesn't want to lose her to the endless night...

My Review:
Yeah, I loved reading these books! They were kinda connected, as Malachi and Liv are cousins! And yeah, of course they're Krewe of Hunters books, and so enjoyable, and these kept that up-they were just so great to read!

I really enjoyed how the ghosts were in these books! Her ancestor was a big help, he did all he could. And the group of ghosts, the murdered friends, and the soldier, yeah, they helped take down the bad guy! Loved it!

These mysteries were really great, because one had police support, and the other didn't at first. And there were all kinds of factors that helped find the bad guys, even when who the bad guys were, hurt. And they did in these books, so much, because it was people they knew, people they had trusted. Not fun!

Oh, and there were also the romances! Can't talk about these books without talking about the romances, because they were part of the characters story arc's! They added so much to these books, and it was sweet and steamy to read them!

Loved these books, they had great endings, and I can't wait to read more of this series!

Week 36 Review: Avenged

From Goodreads:
Avenged is the conclusion to the Vanished duology, an absorbing, psychological suspense story about friendship, deception, jealousy, and love.

Everyone believes Beth's death was an accident, except for Kalah. The girl she loved was stolen from her, and now Kalah's broken heart wants revenge. In order to crack Brit's perfect alibi, Kalah pretends to be Brit's best friend—with the sole mission to destroy her.

Kalah knows that playing Brit's game is deadly. One wrong move could cost someone their life, including her own…but the more lies Kalah tells, the closer she is to the twisted truth.

My Review:
Loved reading this book! I wanted Kalah to take down Brit, so badly, and yeah, it wasn't easy, the path that Kalah was going on! It was slippery, in doing the right thing, and hard that Brit had been playing it longer! So it was great to read about her journey!

Kalah had different approaches to nailing Brit throughout this book. Like, investigating where Brit had been when it was Brit dead and Beth running away. And pretending to be Brit's friend, though that didn't last as long as it could've, but it did some damage!

This is the second book in the duology. And we got to know these characters in the first book, but sometimes, there's more than meets the eye, and some of them showed different sides. And some of them have been growing, changing because of these experiences! It was great!

It was a pretty difficult, but great ending! I really enjoyed how Kalah worked everything! It was a spur of the moment plan, and it could've gone worse than it did, but it was just that moment, yeah, that was a great ending!

I enjoyed this book so much, it was a really great sequel to Vanished!

Week 36 Review: In a Handful of Dust

From Goodreads:
The only thing bigger than the world is fear.

Lucy's life by the pond has always been full. She has water and friends, laughter and the love of her adoptive mother, Lynn, who has made sure that Lucy's childhood was very different from her own. Yet it seems Lucy's future is settled already—a house, a man, children, and a water source—and anything beyond their life by the pond is beyond reach.

When disease burns through their community, the once life-saving water of the pond might be the source of what's killing them now. Rumors of desalinization plants in California have lingered in Lynn's mind, and the prospect of a "normal" life for Lucy sets the two of them on an epic journey west to face new dangers: hunger, mountains, deserts, betrayal, and the perils of a world so vast that Lucy fears she could be lost forever, only to disappear in a handful of dust.

In this companion to Not a Drop to Drink, Mindy McGinnis thrillingly combines the heart-swelling hope of a journey, the challenges of establishing your own place in the world, and the gripping physical danger of nature in a futuristic frontier.

My Review:
Oh, oh, oh, I don't know who I went this long without reading this book! I mean, I loved the first book. And I wanted to read this one, I just kept getting distracted, you know, by other books. Which happened, and I finally got a chance to read it, and I loved it!

I did start to read it, once. But there was this feeling, after they left their community to go out to California, that something was going to go wrong. And that feeling hung over the beginning, and made it slightly hard for me to read this book. But I got through it, and yeah, I enjoyed it so much!

This book was narrated by Lucy, the adopted daughter of Lynn, about 10 years after Not a Drop to Drink. And yeah, this book was a journey, as they traveled, and met new people, and wondered about survival.

There were some tough times, losing her friend to death, leaving her community and grandmother, and yeah, what happened in Las Vegas. But Lucy and Lynn persevered, and made it, and that was a pretty fantastic end, even with Lynn going back east. Loved it!

This book was so fantastic to read, a great sequel, and I can't wait to read more by Mindy McGinnis!

Week 36 Review: The Cresswell Plot

From Goodreads:
The woods were insane in the dark, terrifying and magical at the same time. But best of all were the stars, which trumpeted their light into the misty dark.

Castella Cresswell and her five siblings—Hannan, Caspar, Mortimer, Delvive, and Jerusalem—know what it's like to be different. For years, their world has been confined to their ramshackle family home deep in the woods of upstate New York. They abide by the strict rule of God, whose messages come directly from their father.

Slowly, Castley and her siblings start to test the boundaries of the laws that bind them. But, at school, they're still the freaks they've always been to the outside world. Marked by their plain clothing. Unexplained bruising. Utter isolation from their classmates. That is, until Castley is forced to partner with the totally irritating, totally normal George Gray, who offers her a glimpse of a life filled with freedom and choice.

Castley's world rapidly expands beyond the woods she knows so well and the beliefs she once thought were the only truths. There is a future waiting for her if she can escape her father's grasp, but Castley refuses to leave her siblings behind. Just as she begins to form a plan, her father makes a chilling announcement: the Cresswells will soon return to their home in heaven. With time running out on all of their lives, Castley must expose the depth of her father's lies. The forest has buried the truth in darkness for far too long. Castley might be their last hope for salvation.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! It was weird, and the beliefs that her dad pushed on the family were very unlikeable. And watching Castley and her siblings struggle between a regular life and the lives their dad want them to lead, was hard, but enjoyable!

I really enjoyed reading about Castley, she was the one that we saw the most, the one whose struggles we knew the most. And it was kinda gender-stereotyping, but hers were more emotional and physiological while the guys struggles were more physical. Not to say that they didn't have all 3 of these struggles, but those were the main ones for them.

I really didn't like their father. He was controlling, and scary, and not much of a parent. He had an average childhood, and then he created this life of power and control over his family. And he kept things hidden from him-he was either delusional, or hiding things from himself.

Loved how they broke free, of how the secrets were brought into the light, and yeah, that these kids got away from a bad situation! While their dad is still out there, they were building new lives for themselves, and that was really great!

I enjoyed reading this book so much, it was really fantastic!

Week 36 Review: Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit

From Goodreads:
Joanna Gordon has been out and proud for years, but when her popular radio evangelist father remarries and decides to move all three of them from Atlanta to the more conservative Rome, Georgia, he asks Jo to do the impossible: to lie low for the rest of her senior year. And Jo reluctantly agrees.

Although it is (mostly) much easier for Jo to fit in as a straight girl, things get complicated when she meets Mary Carlson, the oh-so-tempting sister of her new friend at school. But Jo couldn't possibly think of breaking her promise to her dad. Even if she's starting to fall for the girl. Even if there's a chance Mary Carlson might be interested in her, too. Right?

My Review:
I loved reading this book, it was so fantastic! There's not a lot of LGBT books out there, but this excellent book joins their ranks! And part of the reason that it's so excellent is because it's part of those ranks! I loved it!

Jo was pretty awesome. She was out, and then came back into the closet when she moved with her family. Which wasn't a very accepting thing to be asked to do. And yeah, life is easier this way, especially in the very closed off community that she moved to. Still.

She's torn in all these directions, of keeping her promise to pretend to be straight, of keeping true to herself, and falling in love with Marcy Carlson. Yeah. It was complicated, and she was a teenaged girl, and a human, so of course things went wrong!

But while it goes wrong, it also goes right! I loved the ups and downs of this book, and yeah, it all worked out in the end! It hurt for a while, but then things were worked out, and yeah, I just loved that, made for a really wonderful ending!

This book was fantastic, and I can't wait to read more by Jaye Robin Brown!

Week 36 Review: The Thousandth Floor

From Goodreads:
New York City as you've never seen it before. A thousand-story tower stretching into the sky. A glittering vision of the future, where anything is possible—if you want it enough.

Welcome to Manhattan, 2118.

A hundred years in the future, New York is a city of innovation and dreams. But people never change: everyone here wants something…and everyone has something to lose.

Leda Cole's flawless exterior belies a secret addiction—to a drug she never should have tried and a boy she never should have touched.

Eris Dodd-Radson's beautiful, carefree life falls to pieces when a heartbreaking betrayal tears her family apart.

Rylin Myers's job on one of the highest floors sweeps her into a world—and a romance—she never imagined…but will her new life cost Rylin her old one?

Watt Bakradi is a tech genius with a secret: he knows everything about everyone. But when he's hired to spy by an upper-floor girl, he finds himself caught up in a complicated web of lies.

And living above everyone else on the thousandth floor is Avery Fuller, the girl genetically designed to be perfect. The girl who seems to have it all—yet is tormented by the one thing she can never have.

Debut author Katharine McGee has created a breathtakingly original series filled with high-tech luxury and futuristic glamour, where the impossible feels just within reach. But in this world, the higher you go, the farther there is to fall…

My Review:
This book was fantastic! It combined some really great elements, like a futuristic tower built over Central Park, of power, complicated characters and a mystery that you know something was going to happen, but you didn't know how they got there! Loved it!

This book was narrated by a bunch of characters! And they were all important, and they all had their parts to play! I enjoyed getting to know them, they were very interesting, and they had their flawed, the secrets and their agendas. So fantastic to read!

Knowing what was coming, well, it left a lot of options as to how it got there-especially since we didn't get all the details. And that left a big amount of things unknown. And yeah, that added an level as to wanting to know what was going to happen!

It sucked, the way that things turned out. Because it was worse then it seemed for a lot of the characters, and things were not the same in the end. But this is a series, and there's going to be more, and I can't wait to read it!

This book was really fantastic, and I just want to read more of this series!

Week 36 Review: The Fixes

From Goodreads:
Eric Connelly is crumbling under the weight of his dad's expectations. He can't seem to live up to the "Connelly Man" standards—but when he meets the mysterious, free-spirited Jordan Grant, his dad's rules seem so much less important than they used to.

Jordan and Eric—now "E"—join up with two of the most popular girls in school to combat their rich-kid boredom by cruising their beachside hometown of Capilano. But as Jordan seduces E further into this depraved life, the group starts to kill time in more nefarious ways.

It's Jordan who escalates the pack's dares from mostly harmless jaunts like joyrides in boosted cars and Bling Ring–style luxury shoplifting sprees into more violent activities. Eric is intoxicated . . . swept up in the pack's activities, even as Paige and Haley start to have reservations about what they've been doing. When Jordan starts talking big—can E help him build a bomb, he wonders?—E must decide if he’s too far down the rabbit hole to back out now.

My Review:
This book was a little bit different. Almost every page was a new character, and there were some of those notes, where the place the note goes is marked, and the actual note is at the back of the book. And yeah, then there was the narration!

Loved the narration, it was so awesome, and I loved the voice, of things happening, and then this random voice interjecting comments, that explained things further, made fun of what was going to happen, foreshadowed or just flat out told what was going to happen. It was really awesome!

We know what was going to happen-we were told, in the synopsis, in the book. But we didn't know how things got to that point, and yeah, I really enjoyed going on that journey! It was a downward slide, but it sure as heck was enjoyable!

E basically ruins his life, makes the wrong decision again and again. While Paige and Haley were a part of things from the beginning, they started to back out. And yeah, that was smarter, given what happened in the end, which was, well, explosive!

Loved reading this book, it was so fantastic, and now I'll have to read Owen Matthews' How to Win at High School now, because this book was just so wonderful and well written!

Week 36 Review: A Perilous Undertaking

From Goodreads:
Veronica Speedwell returns in a brand new adventure from Deanna Raybourn, the "New York Times" bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries...

London, 1887. Victorian adventuress and butterfly hunter Veronica Speedwell receives an invitation to visit the Curiosity Club, a ladies-only establishment for daring and intrepid women. There she meets the mysterious Lady Sundridge, who begs her to take on an impossible task saving society art patron Miles Ramsforth from execution. Accused of the brutal murder of his artist mistress Artemisia, Ramsforth will face the hangman's noose in a week s time if Veronica cannot find the real killer.

But Lady Sundridge is not all that she seems, and unmasking her true identity is only the first of the many secrets Veronica must uncover. Together with her natural historian colleague Stoker, Veronica races against time to find the true murderer a ruthless villain who not only took Artemisia's life in cold blood but is happy to see Ramsforth hang for the crime. From a Bohemian artists colony to a royal palace to a subterranean grotto with a decadent history, the investigation proves to be a very perilous undertaking indeed...

My Review:
Oh, this book was so fantastic! I loved the first one, and this one was just as great! Loved being with these characters again and they worked this new case, gathered some pretty interested clues and yeah, dealt with a variety of situations!

Veronica is an awesome character! She's a woman who is beyond her times, and she doesn't totally hide it (like publishing under her name, but as V. Speedwell, so people make assumptions) and she doesn't flaunt it, but she is who she is. And I loved reading about her!

This mystery was different from the first-it wasn't itself personal. The motivations behind investigating it were, since it was brought to her attention by Lady Sundridge-and who she really is  is a big part of the motivation. And yeah, I loved watching her and Stoker investigate!

We learned more about the both of them, we met more of his brothers, which was pretty funny. Like one called her basically a whore, while another flirted with her. Yeah, there was that, and so much more! I loved it!

Loved this book, loved how everything worked out, and I can't wait to read more of this series!

Week 36 Review: Magic Binds

From Goodreads:
Mercenary Kate Daniels knows all too well that magic in post-Shift Atlanta is a dangerous business. But nothing she's faced could have prepared her for this…

Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their relationship official. But there are some steep obstacles standing in the way of their walk to the altar…

Kate's father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in his never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.

The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules…

My Review:
Oh, wow, this book was so fantastic! I loved reading it so, so much! I've loved this series once I started reading it, and yeah, this one was just so freaking great! So much happened, and I loved having more in this series!

Kate had a lot to deal with in this book. Planning for her wedding (of which got taken over when she didn't do it, in a hilarious way,) her father stealing Saiman, and oh, yeah, the prophecy about losing Curran if she marries him, and the one where her dad will take her son. Yeah, a lot going on!

This book, she kind went dark. Like, not bad, bad guy actions, but questionable, and yeah, a new idea that was a bit off the chain! But she learned a lot, of her history, Roland's history, and learned more about her powers-things that are going to help in the future!

That ending, was just a wow! It's something that we've been waiting for since almost the beginning, when we knew something had to happen. And yeah, it happened in this book, at least the start of it! Things are never going to be the same, and I can't wait to read about it happening!

This book was just utterly fantastic, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

In 1959 Virginia, the lives of two girls on opposite sides of the battle for civil rights will be changed forever.

Sarah Dunbar is one of the first black students to attend the previously all-white Jefferson High School. An honors student at her old school, she is put into remedial classes, spit on and tormented daily.

Linda Hairston is the daughter of one of the town’s most vocal opponents of school integration. She has been taught all her life that the races should be kept “separate but equal.”

Forced to work together on a school project, Sarah and Linda must confront harsh truths about race, power and how they really feel about one another.

Boldly realistic and emotionally compelling, Lies We Tell Ourselves is a brave and stunning novel about finding truth amid the lies, and finding your voice even when others are determined to silence it.

Why the time hasn't come yet...
I don't know, it sounds really good! Hopefully I'll be able to read it soon! What about you guys? Happy reading!
