Week 49 Reviews: The Clockwork Boys, The Wonder Engine

From Goodreads:
A paladin, an assassin, a forger, and a scholar ride out of town. It's not the start of a joke, but rather an espionage mission with deadly serious stakes. T. Kingfisher's new novel begins the tale of a murderous band of criminals (and a scholar), thrown together in an attempt to unravel the secret of the Clockwork Boys, mechanical soldiers from a neighboring kingdom that promise ruin to the Dowager's city.

If they succeed, rewards and pardons await, but that requires a long journey through enemy territory, directly into the capital. It also requires them to refrain from killing each other along the way! At turns darkly comic and touching, Clockwork Boys puts together a broken group of people trying to make the most of the rest of their lives as they drive forward on their suicide mission.

From Goodreads:
Pull three people out of prison--a disgraced paladin, a convicted forger, and a heartless assassin. Give them weapons, carnivorous tattoos, and each other. Point them at the enemy.

What could possibly go wrong?

In the sequel to CLOCKWORK BOYS, Slate, Brenner, Caliban and Learned Edmund have arrived in Anuket City, the source of the mysterious Clockwork Boys. But the secrets they're keeping could well destroy them, before the city even gets the chance...

My Review:
These were so great to read! I've really enjoyed T. Kingfisher's books, and this world of the White Rat, I'm so excited to dive in, and see all these different series that are a part of it, as well as the stand alone or two. They were so entertaining!

I was really excited to get to know this world, how it works, and given that the overarching series is called the White Rat, I wanted to know what was going on with that. Getting to know these characters ad this world was fantastic!

All of these characters came to life off the page, they aren't what you'd expect from heroes, they aren't swashbuckling, and that was to their advance, and made them really interesting to read about! I adored their banter, and how they dealt with things!

The whole thing with the Clockwork Boys and how they work, was so interesting to read about! I loved learning about this part of the world, and the secrets they were keeping-and just how to stop them to keep the world going!

Loved reading these books, and I can't wait to continue on with the world!

Week 49 Review: Wooing the Witch Queen

From Goodreads:
In a Gaslamp-lit world where hags and ogres lurk in thick pine forests, three magical queens form an uneasy alliance to protect their lands from invasion . . . and love turns their world upside down.

Queen Saskia is the wicked sorceress everyone fears. After successfully wrestling the throne from her evil uncle, she only wants one to keep her people safe from the empire next door. For that, she needs to spend more time in her laboratory experimenting with her spells. She definitely doesn't have time to bring order to her chaotic library of magic.

When a mysterious dark wizard arrives at her castle, Saskia hires him as her new librarian on the spot. "Fabian" is sweet and a little nerdy, and his requests seem a little strange – what in the name of Divine Elva is a fountain pen? – but he's getting the job done. And if he writes her flirtatious poetry and his innocent touch makes her skin singe, well . . .

Little does Saskia know that the "wizard" she's falling for is actually an Imperial archduke in disguise, with no magical training whatsoever. On the run, with perilous secrets on his trail and a fast growing yearning for the wicked sorceress, he's in danger from her enemies and her newfound allies, too. When his identity is finally revealed, will their love save or doom each other?

'Stephanie Burgis is a fresh new voice and I can't wait to see what she does next' – Ilona Andrews, No. 1 New York Times bestselling author

My Review:
Oh, this was a fantastic read! I've read a few books by Stephanie Burgis, and while I didn't make the connection that this was the same author until after I'd been approved for a copy of this book until I made this review, I was thrilled to know a book that sounded really good was by an author that I'd previously loved!

We know straight off the bat that what people thought was the Archduke, was the actions of his former Regent. He didn't want to give up power, and we learn this because we were in Felix's perspective, right before he escaped to Saskia, since she was someone the guy was afraid of.

I adored their dynamics, she was prickly, life hasn't been kind of her, but neither was it to him. They were adorable, I loved watching them fall in love, though I knew there was the truth about his identity hanging over their heads.

This world with magic and magical creatures-and humans who aren't the most accepting of those that are different, who have power that they don't have...yeah, that was pretty aggravating! So it was pretty satisfying how things ended up!

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Stephanie Burgis!

Week 49 Review: Schemes & Scandals

From Goodreads:
It's Mallory Atkinson's first Christmas in Scotland. Victorian Scotland, that is. Also, as the twenty-first-century detective learns, Christmas really isn't a thing in Victorian Scotland. It's all about Hogmanay. But her boss, Dr. Duncan Gray, treats her to an early gift of tickets to the event of the season: a Charles Dickens reading. There, they bump into Lady Inglis—the lovely widow who has sent Gray sexy letters trying to entice him back to her bed.

Lady Inglis introduces Mallory to Dickens—the meeting of a lifetime—but in return she wants their help. She's being blackmailed. Someone stole letters she wrote to another lover and is threatening to publish them.

Mallory isn't sure what to make of Lady Inglis, but no woman deserves that, so she insists on taking the case with or without Gray's help. Growing tension between them soon tells Mallory that Gray is hiding a secret of his own. She has until Hogmanay to uncover the blackmailer…and, hopefully, to put things right with Gray so they can enjoy the holiday together.

My Review:
I loved reading this book! I've wanted to read it since the physical release, but the ebook only just came out, and I picked it up straight away! I love this series and Kelley Armstrong's writing, and this latest story was such a blast to read!

That this case deals with Duncan's ex-lover, one who sent a letter that Mallory's body's previous occupant had swept away with as potential blackmail material, well, that's complicated enought. But given that she's being blackmailed for letters to another guy, the one that caused her and Duncan to stop their fling, yeah, not a fun situation.

Watching this pair investigate, they're both dealing with sensitive temperaments, him because of who is being blackmailed, and her because she saw Charles Dickens, and knows that he's going to die soon. That the case was fairly simple, with only a small number of suspects, I loved watching how it would turn out! I guessed the culprit a little bit earlier in the text, not from the clues that they used because I missed them, but because the mention of the ransom amount in another context, and that raised alarm bells. So that was satisfying to read!

The fact that Christmas was illegal in Scotland for a period of time, that's such a fascinating fact! That they have Hogmanay, which I'd never heard of before, was great. That ending with the gift-giving-including donuts, I loved that!

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by Kelley Armstrong!

Week 49 Review: It's a Love/Skate Relationship

From Goodreads:
A sapphic enemies-to-lovers romance between a hotheaded hockey player and the ice princess at the figure skating rink next door.

Charlie Porter is a force to be reckoned with, both on and off the hockey rink. When she accidentally starts a brawl after a game, she's suspended from school, meaning no hockey this season—and no chance to play in front of college scouts.

Alexa Goldstein's pairs skating partner was hurt in the fight, and with only four months until their next competition, pickings for a replacement are slim. So she strikes a deal with Charlie—skate with her at the competition well enough to place, and her Olympian mother will use her formidable connections to get Charlie in front of scouts at D-1 schools, even without her team.

It seems impossible, and not just because Charlie has never figure skated before. Where Charlie is powerful, Alexa is elegant; where Charlie is quick to blow up, Alexa is cold as ice. But as the frostiness between them starts to thaw, they begin to wonder if they've found a partner for more than just skating.

My Review:
This was such a fun read! I'm not much one for sport romances, but this sounded really adorable, and I love the idea of hockey player and figure skating people having to work together, but make it queer. It was so much fun to read!

I know that here in Canada, hockey is beloved, but I don't really like sports. But both Charlie and Alexa are passionate about their sports, and it's not like I'm stopping them from playing them, I just don't want to watch their competitions, but oh, I had a great time reading their story!

These two were the top-tier best, I adored their banter, and how of course they didn't get along at first, but working together moved them to the lovers side of enemies to lovers. That they're queer representation, was so great!

Of course there was the pressure about scouts and competitions with their futures, so performing well was a cause of tension. But that was offset with the humor, I mean, the title alone is so funny! So there was a good balancing of elements in this story.

Really enjoyed reading this book and I'd love to read more by Carli J.Corson!

Week 49 Review: The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year

From Goodreads:
Knives Out gets a holiday rom-com twist in this rivals-to-lovers romance-mystery from New York Times bestselling author Ally Carter.

The bridge is out. The phones are down. And the most famous mystery writer in the world just disappeared out of a locked room three days before Christmas.

Meet Maggie Chase and Ethan

She's the new Queen of the Cozy Mystery.

He's Mr. Big-time Thriller Guy.

She hates his guts.

He thinks her name is Marcie (no matter how many times she's told him otherwise.)

But when they both accept a cryptic invitation to attend a Christmas house party at the English estate of a reclusive fan, neither is expecting their host to be the most powerful author in the Eleanor Ashley, the Duchess of Death herself.

That night, the weather turns, and the next morning Eleanor is gone.

She vanished from a locked room, and Maggie has to Is Eleanor in danger? Or is it all some kind of test? Is Ethan the competition? Or is he the only person in that snowbound mansion she can trust?

As the snow gets deeper and the stakes get higher, every clue will bring Maggie and Ethan closer to the truth—and each other. Because, this Christmas, these two rivals are going to have to become allies (and maybe more) if they have any hope of saving Eleanor.

Assuming they don't kill each other first.

My Review:
This was such a fantastic read! I really enjoy her books, but this is the first adult book of hers (I really need to pick up The Blonde Identity!) And it was a fantastic adult mystery romance, set around the holidays? Yeah, sign me up!

Knives Out is one of my favourite movies, and Ally Carter is a favourite author, so I was really looking forward to this book. That they both are mystery authors, if different subgenres, and they're in a locked room mystery? I had to read it!

I really enjoyed watching them investigate, to spend that time together and find out what happened and what was going on. Getting to know them alongside that was just good storytelling. She has suffered some losses, and that's something that shapes her perspective in how she was viewing everyone there as suspects.

This is a standalone, but if we got more books with these characters, I would not be mad about it. The mystery was really well done, and I loved watching them solve it, and I love them! To get more time with them would be really great!

I loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by Ally Carter!

Week 49 Review: How My Neighbor Stole Christmas

From Goodreads:
A new winter holiday, enemies-to-lovers romance, from the undeniably funny and always spicy, USA Today bestselling author, Meghan Quinn.

Every Kringle in Kringletown loved Christmas a lot.
But Cole Black on Whistler Lane, unfortunately did not.

Cole was a recluse during the Kringle Christmas season.
No one knew why, no one could quite give a reason.

Martha said it was because he was alone and very single.
Mae believed it was because he was never named the town Kringle.

But to me, the reason is a storyline far too sad.
For at the age of eighteen, he lost both mom and dad.

Whatever the reason, his parents or being single,
He spends Christmas in the dark, hating the cheery people of Kringle.

More to come.

My Review:
This was such a fun read! I wasn't planning on reading it, but it was one that I could pick, and it sounded like it would be a good time, and it was, I had such a great time with this enemies-to-lovers romance set in the holidays!

This is exactly what a Christmas romance should be, it was lighthearted, and a lot of fun! Storee was the sunshine of the romance, and Cole was the grump, and with the holiday cheer, I really enjoyed their romance, it was just a delight!

Oh, but the fact that he went into this competition, to be everything he's not, to keep her from winning, that was icing on the cake. All the Christmas-themed competitions, it was joyful to read! And when you add in the fake dating, yeah, it added just the right element to the story!

There were some serious moments, because he does have a reason for his less-than-festive manner. Just a touch of seriousness, but enough that it wasn't overwhealmingly sweet, which is great, because that's not to my tastes.

Loved reading this book, and I'm really glad that I picked it up!

Week 49 Review: Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife

From Goodreads:
Every woman wants to be Elizabeth Bennet Darcy-beautiful, gracious, universally admired, strong, daring and outspoken-a thoroughly modern woman in crinolines.

And every woman will fall madly in love with Mr. Darcy-tall, dark and handsome, a nobleman and a heartthrob whose virility is matched only by his utter devotion to his wife.

Their passion is consuming and idyllic-essentially, they can't keep their hands off each other-through a sweeping tale of adventure and misadventure, human folly and numerous mysteries of parentage.

Hold on to your bonnets! This sexy, epic, hilarious, poignant and romantic sequel to "Pride and Prejudice" is not for Jane Austen purists. Self-published in 1999 as "The Bar Sinister," this sequel continues the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy through a sweeping tale of adventure.

My Review:
This was a fantastic read! It wasn't fully what I was expecting, with the writing style very much like the original, but of topics that were more in the erotica wheelhouse. The spice of these newlyweds, yeah, I had a great time with their newlywed bliss.

Once this book had me hooked on their present, it went back and told us how we got there, that period between when they got engaged and when they got married. Which was interesting, because of the standards of the time, but when they were that attracted to one other? Yeah, that was great.

One thing that got to me, was that we'd have this time with Darcy and Lizzie, and I'd want more, and then we'd be in another character's perspective. Overall it added to the story, but in the moment, I just wanted to go back to the main couple. And when you consider just how dense the writing style is, how much longer it took to get back to them, that wasn't my favourite, but I know why it was there.

There were a few things that marred their happiness, like the jealously of his previous experience, as well as a possible result of said experience. That there was someone who had ill-intent close by, I was nervous about what he was going to do.

This was such an enjoyable read, and I can't wait to continue on with the series!

Week 49 Review: The Dagger and the Flame

From Goodreads:
In the dark underbelly of a beautiful city, two rival assassins are pitted against each other in a deadly game of revenge, where the most dangerous mistake of all is falling in love in this searing young adult fantasy.

In Fantome, a kingdom of cobbled streets, flickering lamplight, beautiful buildings, and secret catacombs, Shade-magic is a scarce and deadly commodity controlled by two enemy guilds: the Cloaks and the Daggers—the thieves and the assassins. On the night of her mother's murder, seventeen-year-old Seraphine runs for her life. Seeking sanctuary with the Cloaks, Sera's heart is set on revenge. But are her secret abilities a match for the dark-haired boy whose quicksilver eyes follow her around the city?

Nothing can prepare Sera for the moment she finally comes face-to-face with Ransom, heir to the Order of Daggers. And Ransom is shocked to discover that this unassuming farm girl wields a strange and blazing magic he has never seen before. As the Cloaks and the Daggers grapple for control of Fantome's underworld, Sera and Ransom are consumed by the push and pull of their magic…and the deadly spark and terrible vengeance that keeps drawing them back together.

My Review:
I had such a great time reading this book! I really enjoyed the books that were written with Katherine Webber, so I was excited to pick this one up, it sounded really good, and it was, with characters who I was rooting for, in a world I wanted to know more about!

The premise sounded really interesting, with them being rivals, thieves vs. assassins, and that it is enemies to lovers? I loved that, they really didn't get along, and they are in opposing groups, so they had a reason not to like one another. But of course there is that romantic interest! I entirely loved their banter!

Their magic was really intriguing to learn more about. I always want to know more about everything, especially in first books where we're just getting to know these characters, their world, and this book did a good job of giving us these details. There's still plenty of learn, but it was a good introduction for the start of a series.

After what this book gave us in terms of story, I'm really looking forward to book 2, I can't wait to spend more time with Seraphine and Ransom, to see where their story will go. I really had such a great time reading this book and I can't wait for more!

Week 49 Review: Our Deadly Designs

From Goodreads:
The Shadows Between Us meets The Scorpio Races in the epic conclusion to NYT bestselling Kalyn Josephson's This Dark Descent, called "a fierce and darkly magical thrill ride" by acclaimed author Ava Reid.

The Illinir may be over, but the race for Enderlain's future has just begun. The hunt for the old king's lost heir is on, and the first to find them will win the throne.

Mikira has allied herself with the rebels in pursuit of the lost heir, but the deeper her search takes her, the closer she gets to the royal family's wicked past.

Ari is struggling to control her own growing power as she grapples with a dark secret that may be her undoing — and the truth behind Damien's greatest foe.

Damien, the new head of House Adair, joins the race to find the heir and secure the crown. But as his influence at court grows, so does his paranoia and hunger for power.

Reid is trying his best to stay true to the friend who's always had his loyalty — and the flame who has his heart — while trapped in a web of chaos and lies.

But a darker force is festering in Enderlain's underbelly, and Mikira, Ari, Damien, and Reid will need to find a way back to each other — and themselves — before the kingdom is torn apart. Hearts will be broken and new bonds will be forged in this explosive finale to This Dark Descent, where spellbinding fantasy meets Jewish mythology in a cut-throat race for the throne — and Enderlain's survival.

My Review:
Oh, this was such a fantastic read! I really fell in love with this series with the first book, I already knew that I enjoyed her writing (once I realized that this was the same author of The Storm Crow) and oh, the world and characters of this series were so superb!

The way things ended, with Mikira and Damien being on the outs, and Ari being possessed, probably by one of the Heretics, yeah, the gang is kinda broken up, which wasn't great for them, but was excellent conflict for us readers. Oh, and there was some romantic drama, because of the betrayals from the first book, so I really enjoyed all that, and all the representation that gave us, I was kinda expecting the one relationship!

The politics and magic of the world were in the forefront of the first book, but it was mainly focused on how it applied to what they were currently with, and just dropping tidbits of information. So having achieved their goals, the focus was broader in this book, and I loved learning more! We were briefly introduced to the rebellion in the first book, and all the reasons why it exists in the first place with the corruption of the current system, yeah, I was excited to see what they were going to do about it!

I really came to care for these characters, their situations kept changing, and the trouble just kept increasing. I had to know how they were going to get out of it all alive. That ending was absolutely spectacular, and I loved where it left them!

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Kalyn Josephson!

Monthly ARC's Update 100

So I read my next book for Monthly ARC's and it was The Queen's Spade by Sarah Raughley and It's a Love/Skate Relationship by Carli J. Corson from the January list, and The Dagger and the Flame by Catherine Doyle from the October list.

Here's the link to this month's post with my journey.

How it Works:
This is my monthly ARC accountability challenge, to list out the books that I have as ARC's that are being published in the coming month, rounding them up at the start of the month, and seeing how well I did at the end, as well as rounding up the next month's books.

Book Blogger Hop #374, December 6th

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer's permission, Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013. Check out the hop here!

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop's purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

The Question of the week is: Can you recommend a book that catches the spirit of year-end thoughts or generates a sense of nostalgia in you? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

Again, not the kind of prompt that I can fulfill, my brain doesn't work that way. What about you guys? Happy reading!

First Lines Friday #708, December 6th

First Lines Friday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie of Precision Reviews. We encourage all of our fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

-Grab your current read(s)
-Share the first line(s)
-Include the title and author so that other FLF participants can add the book to their TBR Lists!

"Gavilar Kholin was on the verge of immortality. He merely had to find the right Words. He walked a circle around the nine Honorblades, driven point-first into the stone ground. The air stank of burned flesh; he'd attended enough funeral pyres to know that scent intimately, though these bodies hadn’t been burned after the fighting but during it."-Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson

Oh that's pretty intense! Must read more now! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Random Reads #681, December 5th

Random Reads is a monthly meme (that I'm going to do weekly) hosted by I'm Loving Books to read some books that have been on our TBR piles for a long time. Using Random.org, I got 4635 which turned out to be The Bastard's Betrayal by Katee Robert! It's been on my TBR pile since August 25th, 2021, and I added it because I love her writing and it sounded really good!! What about you guys? Happy reading!
