Week 35 Review: Nothing Left to Burn

From Goodreads:
Dear Dad,

I promised Matt I'd do this—become a Junior Cadet. That I wouldn't let you break me down. I know you hate me. Blame me for everything you lost. But that day I lost my brother and my dad. You could never be proud of me, could you? I was too "different." So, just in case you haven't figured it out yet, I'm saying good-bye. Maybe someday you’ll miss me.

Reece

Reece's words make her ache. Amanda understands wanting to belong. As a foster kid, she only feels at home at the firehouse where she volunteers. She wants to help Reece, but his dad is her boss. And she won't risk her place as a Junior Cadet—it’s all that she has. But when a string of arsons points to Amanda's foster brother as the culprit, her whole world is about to go up in flames. And the only way for Amanda and Reece to save each other is to risk getting burned.

My Review:
Oh, this book was just so fantastic! I loved reading about these characters, and this situation! It wasn't easy, but it was just so fantastic to read, and I enjoyed reading it so much, especially after just recently reading Some Boys!

One thing that this book made me do, was appreciate those that are out there, fighting fire. They risk their lives, and they have keep a bunch of pertinent information about fires. It's complicated, and yeah, this book just made me appreciate them!

These characters, oh! They had their stories, and those were deep and personal! I loved reading about them, and their lives! Reece with his dad, and Amanda being a foster kid, these were parts of them. And they affected their romance, and I just loved reading about it!

The mystery! This was a bit of a small town, and yeah, we weren't given a lot of clues-they were kids, and this was out of what they should know. But they were involved, and they did find the bad guy-and yeah, that made it such a great read!

Loved reading this book, it was just so fantastic, and I can't wait to read more by Patty Blount!

Week 35 Reviews: Judas Kiss, The Cold Room

From Goodreads:
It was a murder made for TV: a trail of tiny bloody footprints. An innocent toddler playing beside her mother's bludgeoned body. Pretty young Corinne Wolff, seven months pregnant, brutally murdered in her own home.

Cameras and questions don't usually faze Nashville homicide lieutenant Taylor Jackson, but the media frenzy surrounding the Wolff case is particularly nasty…and thorough. When the seemingly model mommy is linked to an amateur porn Web site with underage actresses and unwitting players, the sharks begin to circle.

The shock is magnified when an old adversary uses the sexy secret footage to implicate Taylor in a murder—an accusation that threatens her career, her reputation and her relationship.

Both cases hinge on the evidence—real or manufactured—of crimes that go beyond passion, into the realm of obsessive vengeance and shocking betrayal. Just what the networks love.

From Goodreads:
Homicide detective Taylor Jackson thinks she's seen it all in Nashville — but she's never seen anything as perverse as The Conductor. Once his victim is captured, he contains her in a glass coffin, slowly starving her to death. Only then does he give in to his attraction.

Later, he creatively disposes of the body by reenacting scenes from famous paintings. Strangely, similar macabre works are being displayed in Europe. Taylor teams up with her fiancé, FBI profiler Dr. John Baldwin, and New Scotland Yard detective James "Memphis" Highsmythe — a haunted man who has eyes only for Taylor — to put an end to The Conductor's art collection.

Has the killer gone international? Or are there dueling artists, competing to create the ultimate masterpiece?

My first reveiw of The Cold Room
My Review:
I loved reading these books again! It's been so long since the first time, and yeah, I'd forgotten most of what happened in them. Of course, I remembered bits and pieces, but that's nothing compared to having the whole thing together!

Both of these books deal with some pretty nasty subjects-the killing of a pregnant woman and teenage sex rings and exploitation, and having sex with dead bodies. Not pleasant, and The Cold Room was creepier. Yeah.

After the events of 14, The Pretender is out there, and they haven't married quite yet. And their relationship takes some hits, especially in The Cold Room with Memphis and his flirting. Which was really uncool of him!

Loved how things wrapped up in the cases, even if they weren't the best, having the suspect die in front of you, and not being able to charge them without knowing which twin was which. But the demotion bit, yeah, that was hard to read! She was just awful!

Loved reading these books, they were just so fantastic, and I can't wait to read more of this series!

Week 35 Review: Gone Too Far

From Goodreads:
Keeping secrets ruined her life. But the truth might just kill her.

Piper Woods can't wait for the purgatory of senior year to end. She skirts the fringes of high school like a pro until the morning she finds a notebook with mutilated photographs and a list of student sins. She's sure the book is too gruesome to be true, until pretty, popular Stella dies after a sex-tape goes viral. Everyone's sure it's suicide, but Piper remembers Stella's name from the book and begins to suspect something much worse.

Drowning in secrets she doesn't want to keep, Piper's fears are confirmed when she receives an anonymous text message daring her to make things right. All she needs to do is choose a name, the name of someone who deserves to be punished...

My Review:
I just loved reading this book! I've enjoyed her other books, and I don't know why it took me so long to read this one! But I'm glad that I read it, because it was just so enjoyable, and great to read! This was definitely a different book!

The choices that Piper makes, well, they aren't the morally right ones, but they're the ones that most people would do in her position. Who doesn't want to get back at the people who get away with so much, who aren't punished? It's a very guilty pleasure!

I really enjoyed reading about Piper, she was determined, and she decoded the notebook. She figured out who her "partner" was, who was pulling off the bigger-than-pranks. And she was also falling in love, which was really cute!

I really enjoyed her with Nick, he was popular, but he wasn't mean about it. He was a nice person, and I was really glad that they got together! And that it all worked out, yeah, that was a really great ending! Though it did hurt!

This book was so fantastic and enjoyable, and I can't wait to read more by Natalie D. Richards!

Week 35 Review: Some Boys

From Goodreads:
Some girls say no. Some boys don't listen.

When Grace meets Ian, she's afraid. Afraid he'll reject her like the rest of the school, like her own family. After she accuses Zac, the town golden boy, of rape, everyone turns against her. Ian wouldn't be the first to call her a slut and a liar.

Except Ian doesn't reject her. He's the one person who looks past the taunts and the names and the tough-girl act to see the real Grace. He's the one who gives her the courage to fight back.

He's also Zac's best friend.

My Review:
This book was utterly fantastic to read! I loved to hate the subject matter-of rape, and how boys get away with it, that "boys will be boys" or athletes are deemed more important then the victims, and it either isn't believed, or it's swept under the rug. And it's very infuriating!

We knew something had happened. The synopsis tells us that. But Grace kept the whole story from us, and revealed bit by bit, until we had everything, and it wasn't a pleasant story. It sounds like it has-and will-happen, and with the way that society is, that it won't change anytime soon. Which is pretty horrible.

Grace and Ian were really interesting together. She was raped by his best friend-when she was interested in Ian. And that if Ian had gotten to the party earlier, it might not have happened. Yeah, they had an interesting dynamic!

When everything came out, that Zac was lying and manipulating things, there was a sense of relief-that things were righted, though not as much as they could've been, but were better than they had been. So it was a pretty great ending!

I enjoyed this book so much-I made a lot of aggravation sounds-and I need to read more by Patty Blount!

Week 35 Review: Dreaming of Antigone

From Goodreads:
Every star has its own path…

"I can't ever be the blazing star that Iris was. I'm still just a cold, dark satellite orbiting a star that went super nova."

Andria's twin sister, Iris, had adoring friends, a cool boyfriend, a wicked car, and a shelf full of soccer trophies. She had everything, in fact—including a drug problem. Six months after Iris's death, Andria is trying to keep her grades, her friends, and her family from falling apart. But stargazing and books aren't enough to ward off her guilt that she—the freak with the scary illness and all-black wardrobe—is still here when Iris isn't. And then there's Alex Hammond. The boy Andria blames for Iris's death. The boy she's unwittingly started swapping lines of poetry and secrets with, even as she tries to keep hating him.

Heartwrenching, smart, and bold, Dreaming of Antigone is a story about the jagged pieces that lie beneath the surface of the most seemingly perfect life…and how they can fit together to make something wholly unexpected.

My Review:
This book was really fantastic! It was sad, but there was also a sense of hope, too! This is the second of Robin Bridge's contemporary YA books that I've read, and I'm pretty sure that it was the first to be published, and yeah, I really enjoyed it!

Andria was interesting. She was the weaker sibling of the two, because of her medical history. And yet, Iris is the one that died. And it's hard for her to deal with it. She shouldn't have had to. But it wouldn't be a very good book if it didn't echo real life-things aren't fair.

I loved her star-gazing, and her connection with Alex, and how there's a push-pull tug between them. Because he dated Iris. And the drug thing. Which made things complicated, but didn't stop the things growing between them!

It was sad and aggravating to find out what had happened! That he would do that, to his step-daughter, was repulsive. And that Iris felt that she couldn't speak up, was just horrible. So yeah, I really enjoyed how things ended!

This book was just so fantastic, and I can't wait to read more by Robin Bridges!

Week 35 Review: Secrets of the Demon

From Goodreads:
Homicide detective Kara Gillian has a special talent: she can sense the "arcane" in our world, and there's quite a bit of it, even in Beaulac, Louisiana. She's also a summoner of demons, and works on a task force that deals with supernatural crimes. Her partners are attractive and smart FBI agents, but they're not summoners, and they're not telling Kara why they are on this special force with her.

To make things worse, Kara has pledged herself to one of the most powerful of demons-a Demon Lord-who helped save her partner's life, but now expects things in return. Meanwhile, she's trying to solve a string of murders that are somehow tied together by money, sex, rock music and...mud. But how can she concentrate on the case when she's not even sure who-or what-her partners are?

My Review:
I loved reading this book! This series has been getting better and better, and I loved watching Kara as she navigated this investigation! So wonderful to read, and being with these characters again was really amazing! They are just so epic!

This book started off with a bang, and then just kept going! There was politics and grabbing. And there was some new arcane developments-the power storing container thing, which means she'll be able to summon whenever, basically!

We also learned about Ryan and Zach, a little bit, because they aren't who they seemed. And how they were connected to this world, well, I'm itching to find out more! Plus, we got a new character, and I can't wait to see more of her!

The ending hurt a little bit, that those two would use her brother like that. Kara made the right choice, and a bit of information came out of that, and I can't wait to see how it's all going to work out! I just want to read more of this series!

This book was utterly fantastic, and I can't wait to read more of this series!

The Reward Challenge Update #258, August 26th

The Reward Challenge is almost the complete opposite to a book buying ban as you'll end up buying lots of new books throughout the challenge but only after you've completed a certain amount of reading. It was hosted by Good Golly Miss Holly, so thanks to her for starting it!

OK, so I read Secrets of the Demon which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2016 Book, Dreaming of Antigone which counts 3 times as a NetGalley Book and a SAC Book, Some Boys which counts 3 times as a NetGalley Book and a SAC 2016 Book, Gone Too Far which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, SAC Book and a WoW Book, Intertwined which counts 4 times as a DAC Book, Review Book and a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2016 Book, Judas Kiss which counts twice times as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2016 Book, The Cold Room which counts twice times as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2016 Book, Nothing Left to Burn which counts 3 times as a NetGalley Book and a SAC 2016 Book, Replica which counts 4 times as a Edelweiss Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2016 Book and a WoW Book, Hemlock which counts twice a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2016 Book, Thornhill which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2016 Book, Willowgrove which counts 5 times as a Edelweiss Book, End of Series 2016 Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2016 Book and a WoW Book.

So I have 36 counts which translates to $18 this week! I'll use it to buy some books!

First Lines Friday #267, August 26th

First Lines Friday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie of Precision Reviews. We encourage all of our fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

-Grab your current read(s)
-Share the first line(s)
-Include the title and author so that other FLF participants can add the book to their TBR Lists!

"Blood ran down my hands in thin rivers. I yanked on the chain-link fence, ignoring the pain, desperate to widen a gap at the bottom where someone had cut the wire. Puddle water soaked through my jeans as I knelled on the filthy pavement. Small things-don't think about mice and rats-scurried in the darkness." -Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock

Yeah, for me, this opening is about desperation, to live! Need to read more! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Random Reads #248, August 25th

Random Reads is a monthly meme (that I'm going to do weekly) hosted by I'm Loving Books to read some books that have been on our TBR piles for a long time. Using Random.org, I got 2089 which turned out to be The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielson! It's been on my TBR pile since December 27th, 2011, and I added it because it sounded good! Happy reading!

Feel free to share more than one sentence, if you feel the need to do so.
2) Review this sentence anyway you want (funny and silly reviews encouraged)
3) Post a link to your sentence at Words I Write Crazy (This Blog)
4) Visit one or two of the other blogs to check out their third sentences!

"We kept this up for an hour or so, with me reading the list and Bear quizzing me, and it was really working for me." -Nothing Left to Burn by Patty Blount, page 74.

That sounds like a good thing, so yeah!

In this humorous love story from the author of Two-way Street, an unlikely romance is the best sort of surprise—but the wrong secret can ruin everything.

Kelsey’s not going to let one mistake ruin her life. Sure, she got kicked out of prep school and all her old friends are shutting her out. But Kelsey’s focused on her future, and she’s determined to get back on track at Concordia High.

Isaac’s been expelled from more schools than he can count. Since his father’s a state senator, Isaac’s life is under constant scrutiny—but Concordia’s High’s his last stop before boarding school, so Isaac’s hoping to fly under the radar and try to stay put for a change.

When Kelsey and Isaac meet it’s anything but love at first sight. She thinks he’s an entitled brat, and he thinks she’s a stuck-up snob. So it surprises them both when they start to fall for each other. Kelsey’s happy for the first time in months, and Isaac’s never felt this way about anyone before.

But nothing’s ever completely perfect. Everyone has secrets, and Isaac and Kelsey are no exceptions. These two may have fallen hard, but there’s one thing that can ruin it all: the truth.

Why the time hasn't come yet...
I don't know! I want to read it, and it sounds good! I'll find time to read it soon...hopefully! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Intertwined: Review

From Goodreads:
Quiet seventeen-year-old Elizabeth Parker is looking forward to another mellow summer with her goofy relatives: sun tanning at the beach and staying out of trouble. Which is why the thought of her younger cousin participating in what is, clearly, a setup disguised as an initiation, worries her to the point of intervention.

One that backfires … big time …

Mistaken for her cousin, Elizabeth finds herself transported to an abandoned plantation, a place deeply haunted with unresolved mystery and where horror reigns every summer between July 20 and August 13.

It is there, locked in the pitch dark, where she finds herself paired with the strange and mysterious Adam Hunt—an unexpected trespasser with his own agenda. Together, they find a list of instructions—follow the clues to various possessions in the house, store them in the backpack provided, and find the key that will grant escape.

Having snuck in to document the haunting, Adam offers to help her find the key so long as she helps him record paranormal activity along the way. But as they make their way through the house, they soon discover unexplained anomalies…

For the first time in the plantation's recorded history, the haunting deviates from its known cycle of events, thrusting Elizabeth and Adam in a series of perilous circumstances that ensue long after the night is over.

As the last day of the haunting draws nearer, and as forces beyond their control ignite their growing attraction, Elizabeth and Adam must work together to uncover the plantations mysterious past before its too late.

Or die trying.

My Review:
This book was pretty awesome! It was creepy, and I loved the mystery and the curse and working things out! And that ending! Plus these characters were pretty great, like Elizabeth who was a worrywart with anxiety-but in this situation, when she should've been totally out of it, she was functioning fairly well!

I loved how things went from paranormal lite of ghosts, and the mystery of finding the flags, clues, and objects, to the curse, and trying to free themselves from it, and the horror there! Just made for a really awesome read!

One thing that made this book especially creepy for me, were the snakes. *Shudders*. They were creepy and horrible and a part of all the bad things that happened! Just, urgh! I had to read those parts cuddled with my doggies to protect me!

Loved that ending! There was that moment when things hit pause, and then it started back up again! Because yeah, this is a series, and things aren't over. This ending was evil, and I can't wait for Tethered to come out next year!

Really enjoyed this book, it was awesome, and I can't wait to read more!

What Light by Jay Asher
Expected Publication: October 11th, 2016
From Goodreads:
From Jay Asher, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Thirteen Reasons Why, comes a romance that will break your heart, but soon have you believing again. . . .

Sierra's family runs a Christmas tree farm in Oregon—it's a bucolic setting for a girl to grow up in, except that every year, they pack up and move to California to set up their Christmas tree lot for the season. So Sierra lives two lives: her life in Oregon and her life at Christmas. And leaving one always means missing the other.

Until this particular Christmas, when Sierra meets Caleb, and one life eclipses the other.

By reputation, Caleb is not your perfect guy: years ago, he made an enormous mistake and has been paying for it ever since. But Sierra sees beyond Caleb's past and becomes determined to help him find forgiveness and, maybe, redemption. As disapproval, misconceptions, and suspicions swirl around them, Caleb and Sierra discover the one thing that transcends all else: true love.

What Light is a love story that's moving and life-affirming and completely unforgettable.
