Bridgerton meets Evie Dunmore in a sparkling new regency romcom from New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Enoch, A Duke Never Tells , in which an heiress disguises herself as a maid in her fiancé's household to see if he really is too good to be true.
Before entering into a supremely-advantageous arranged marriage with James Clay, the new Duke of Earnhurst, clever, independent Lady Meg Pinwell has to see if he's really the rake he's rumored to be. But how is a well-bred young lady going to make sure he's all that he seems?
With the help of her Aunt Clara, they plan some discreet reconnaissance at the Duke's country estate. Meg will pretend to be her aunt's maid/companion to see the true state of affairs at Earnhurst Manor.
But Meg isn't the only one pretending to be someone she isn't. In order to escape Clara (who is surely a marriage hunter!), James has traded places with the excellent Riniken, the former Duke's butler. Soon everyone is falling in love with the absolute wrong person! They say the course of true love never does run smooth… at Earnhurst, it's running amuck!
My Review:
Loved reading this book! The set up of a double identity switch, everybody pretending to be someone else, was so much fun! That real feelings come to call for all of them, even though they're either supposed to marry the other, or that they're not supposed to be involved, yeah, it was so much fun!
This is a double love story, and we get all 4 of their perspectives, and it was a tad bit confusing, trying to keep up with who was who and who knew what, and where we'd last seen them and where the characters had last seen them. It was a bit of juggling, but it was worth it for this story!
Watching as these pairs fell in love, not knowing the truth about each other, was so hilarious. Since the ladies were trying to see if he was going to make Meg a good husband, while James doesn't want the responsibility of being Duke, so passes his butler off as the Duke, and himself as the butler, all the pretending and switching left them with the one that they should be with, which is just so funny to me!
There was all the drama, from the secrets and misunderstandings, and I was here for it. I didn't know how the truth was going to come out, but I couldn't wait, because on one hand, they were deceiving each other, but on the other, those secrets almost meant that they could be with the one that they loved. So I really enjoyed that!
Really enjoyed reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Suzanne Enoch!
