Week 35 Reviews: The Whispering Room

From Goodreads:
Work is a welcome refuge for New Orleans homicide detective Evangeline Theroux. Feeling suffocated by her new baby, in whose eyes she sees only her dead husband, she throws herself into a high-profile murder case. Reclusive writer Lena Saunders offers Evangeline a provocative theory about the crime: it is the work of a lunatic vigilante. Lena spins the sordid story of Ruth and Rebecca Lemay, whose mother brutally murdered her male children in an insane effort to root out an "evil" gene. The girls survived and grew to adulthood--but one is carrying on her mother's grisly work.

When the case takes a terrifyingly personal turn, Evangeline's whole life will depend on a crucial, impossible choice: the lesser of two evils.

My Review:
Wow, it was so great to read this book again! It's been so long since I first read it, but when I got the ending, I guess there were some sparks of memory, because I had an idea of what would happen. But since I didn't really remember anything, it was so great to read it again!

There were a few things going on. There was the case with the lawyer who died by the snake bites. Then there was the guy who said lawyer got off of being imprisoned in a pretty major case. And there's the story of the Lemays and what their mother did to her sons. Not pretty!

I really enjoyed spending time with Evangeline, her life has been all over the place with the death of her husband, who never got to meet their son. And then to come back to this mess of a situation, well, she learned some rather unsettling truths about her husband and her life through the course of this book!

There was a bit of a romance, but it wasn't a main story arc, more of a part of the story with her relationship with the dude. Because boy did it get off on a bad foot, and get worse from there, before it got better! So great to read!

This book was such a great read! Loved it so much!

Week 35 Review: As Death Draws Near

From Goodreads:
The latest mystery from the national bestselling author of A Study in Death tangles Lady Kiera Darby and Sebastian Gage in a dangerous web of religious and political intrigue.

June 1831. In the midst of their idyllic honeymoon in England's Lake District, Kiera and Gage's seclusion is soon interrupted by a missive from her new father-in-law. A deadly incident involving a distant relative of the Duke of Wellington has taken place at an abbey south of Dublin, Ireland, and he insists that Kiera and Gage look into the matter.

Intent on discovering what kind of monster could murder a woman of the cloth, the couple travel to Rathfarnham Abbey school. Soon a second nun is slain in broad daylight near a classroom full of young girls. With the sinful killer growing bolder, the mother superior would like to send the students home, but the growing civil unrest in Ireland would make the journey treacherous.

Before long, Kiera starts to suspect that some of the girls may be hiding a sinister secret. With the killer poised to strike yet again, Kiera and Gage must make haste and unmask the fiend, before their matrimonial bliss comes to an untimely end...

My Review:
Yeah! It was so freaking great to read this book! It's the first book in which they're married after all, and that puts a new spin on their investigations, because they have to work out what protectiveness they're going to have for each other. Oh, and Kiera has motherhood worries as well. Just so great to read!

This mystery, oh! I had no idea where it would go, and we'd get a clue that would lead one place, and then learn so much more, that sometimes conflicted with what we'd previously learned. It was hard to know what to trust, and what had be manufactured for their benefit! It didn't help that there were so many secrets being kept! Like, one after the other after another!

A big part of this book is the politics of the time and place. Because Ireland at the time, if this book was researched and represented correctly, as I should hope it should be, was pretty intense. And that the first victim was a recent convert to Catholicism, gave them a starting point for the investigation.

The thing about this mystery, is that they weren't sure it was murder. But then another nun is murdered, which clears up some things, but complicates others. It was a pretty excellent mystery! Really enjoyed how they figured it all out!

Loved reading this book so much, and I can't wait to read more!

Book Blogger Hop #99, August 30th

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer's permission, I relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013. Check out the hop here

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop's purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

The Question of the week is: Have you ever enjoyed the same book in two or more formats? For example, print and ebook, print and audiobook, ebook and audiobook, or all three? (submitted by Maria @ A Night's Dream of Books)

I've definitely read both physical books and ebooks. And one time, for Claimed by Shadow by Karen Chance, I believe, I first read it as audiobook. The next time, it was a physical book. I will read whatever version I have, because I have it. What about you guys? Happy reading!

The Reward Challenge Update #415, August 30th

The Reward Challenge is almost the complete opposite to a book buying ban as you'll end up buying lots of new books throughout the challenge but only after you've completed a certain amount of reading. It was hosted by Good Golly Miss Holly, so thanks to her for starting it!

OK, so I read As Death Draws Near which counts 3 times as a Historical Fiction 2019 Book and Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2019 Book, The Whispering Room which counts twice as a SAC Book 2019 Book, The Library of the Unwritten which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2019 Book and a WoW Book, Jane Anonymous which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, SAC 2019 Book and a WoW Book, The Upside of Falling which counts 4 times as a Edelweiss Book, SAC 2019 Book and a WoW Book, Unforgettable You which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2019 Book and a WoW Book, Diamond Fire which counts twice as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2019 Book, Sapphire Flames which counts 3 times as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2019 Book and a WoW Book, Sharpest Sting which counts 3 times as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2019 Book and a Review Book, Deadly Little Scandals which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2019 Book and a WoW Book, Midnight at the Electric which counts 4 times as a Edelweiss Book, Historical Fiction 2019 Book and a SAC 2019 Book, 16 Ways to Break a Heart which counts 3 times as a Edelweiss Book and a SAC 2019 Book, The Crown's Game which counts 5 times as a DAC Book, Edelweiss Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2019 Book and RR Book, The Crown's Fate which counts 5 times as a Edelweiss Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2019 Book, Sophomore Challenge Book and a WoW Book.

So I have 42 counts which translates to $21 this week! I'll use it to buy books!

First Lines Friday #433, August 30th

First Lines Friday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie of Precision Reviews. We encourage all of our fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

-Grab your current read(s)
-Share the first line(s)
-Include the title and author so that other FLF participants can add the book to their TBR Lists!

"The smell of sugar and yeast welcomed Vika even before she stepped into the pumpkin-shaped shop on the main street of their little town. She resisted the urge to burst into Cinderella Bakery-her father had labored for sixteen years to teach her how to be demure-and she slipped into the shop and took her place quietly at the end of the line of middle-aged women." -The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye

Well, that sounds, well, welcoming! Can't wait to read more and see where it'll go! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Random Reads #406, August 29th

Random Reads is a monthly meme (that I'm going to do weekly) hosted by I'm Loving Books to read some books that have been on our TBR piles for a long time. Using Random.org, I got 1067 which turned out to be Break Out by Nina Croft! It's been on my TBR pile since July 20th, 2011, and I added it because it sounded really good! Happy reading!

1) Take the book you are currently reading and open it to a random page. Share the third full sentence on that page. (If there isn't a third one – like at the end of a chapter or a blank page – you can share the third sentence of the book or just choose another random page.) Feel free to share more than one sentence, if you feel the need to do so.
2) Review this sentence anyway you want (funny and silly reviews encouraged)
3) Post a link to your sentence at Words I Write Crazy (This Blog)

As a viscount's daughter, vivacious Coralee Whitmore is perfectly placed to write about London's elite in the outspoken ladies' gazette, Heart to Heart. But beneath her fashionable exterior beats the heart of a serious journalist.

So when her sister's death is dismissed as suicide, Corrie vows to uncover the truth, suspecting the notorious Earl of Tremaine was Laurel's lover and the father of her illegitimate child. Corrie infiltrates Castle Tremaine posing as a wide-eyed country relation whose charming figure --- and reduced circumstances --- make her irresistible to the confirmed scoundrel. But Corrie finds the earl is not all he seems ... nor is she immune to his charms, however much she despises his caddish ways.

Far from a society column, Corrie's life soon reads more like one of Mr. Dickens's serials. But the danger of her ruse is hardly fictional: someone is bent on ensuring Corrie's questions go unanswered --- and unasked.

Why the time hasn't come yet...
It's been so long sine I read the first book, I'd have to read that first, but I do want to read them all! Hopefully I will! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Waiting on Wednesday #433, August 28th

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

Shattered Bonds by Faith Hunter
Expected Publication: October 29th, 2019
From Goodreads:
Jane Yellowrock must dig deep and find strength within herself if she is to survive in the latest novel in this New York Times bestselling series.

Jane Yellowrock is a shapeshifting skinwalker, and vampire killer-for-hire, but her last battle with an ancient arcane enemy has brought her low. She seeks retreat in the Appalachian Mountains to grieve the loss of her friends, and to heal--or to die--from the disease brought on by her magic.

But malevolent elements in the paranormal community still seek to destroy Jane, and the younger Son of Darkness stalks her, even into the safety of the hills. With nowhere to run and her body failing, the rogue-vampire hunter and her inner Beast must discover a way to defeat this new threat, and find a form that gives her a chance to fight another day.

Christmas in Silver Springs by Brenda Novak
Expected Publication: October 29th, 2019
From Goodreads:
Come home to Silver Springs for the holidays, where broken hearts learn to love again…together.

So much for forever. When Harper Devlin’s rock star husband ditches her on his way to the top, she takes her two daughters to her sister’s place in Silver Springs for the holidays, hoping family can heal her broken heart. But comfort comes in unexpected places when she crosses paths with local Tobias Richardson.

The moment Tobias spots Harper, he recognizes a sadness he knows all too well. After spending thirteen years in prison paying for his regretful past, Tobias is ready to make amends, and maybe helping Harper is the way to do it. But offering her a shoulder to cry on ignites a powerful attraction and a desire neither saw coming.

Fearing her reaction, Tobias doesn’t reveal his checkered past. He’s falling hard, and if Harper finds out, he’ll lose her for good, especially because her famous ex is now trying to win her back. Secrets have a way of coming out, but maybe this Christmas will bring Tobias the forgiveness—and the love—he deserves.

Beyond the Black Door by A.M. Strickland
Expected Publication: October 29th, 2019
From Goodreads:
Kamai was warned never to open the black door, but she didn't listen ...

Everyone has a soul. Some are beautiful gardens, others are frightening dungeons. Soulwalkers―like Kamai and her mother―can journey into other people's souls while they sleep.

But no matter where Kamai visits, she sees the black door. It follows her into every soul, and her mother has told her to never, ever open it.

When Kamai touches the door, it is warm and beating, like it has a pulse. When she puts her ear to it, she hears her own name whispered from the other side. And when tragedy strikes, Kamai does the unthinkable: she opens the door.

A.M. Strickland's imaginative dark fantasy features court intrigue and romance, a main character coming to terms with her asexuality, and twists and turns as a seductive mystery unfolds that endangers not just Kamai's own soul, but the entire kingdom ...

Yeah, I'm really excited for these books! I love the first two books' writing and these series so much, and these books, I just need to read them! And Beyond the Black Door sounds really interesting! What about you guys? Happy reading!
