The seductive and action-packed follow-up to Alex Aster's instant #1 New York Times, #1 Wall Street Journal, and internationally bestselling novel, Lightlark
Isla Crown has secured the love of two powerful rulers and broken the curses that plagued the six realms for centuries, but few know the true origins of her powers. Now, in the wake of a crushing betrayal, Isla finds herself hungry for distraction, preferring to frequent Lightlark's seductive haunts instead of embracing her duties as the newly crowned leader of two separate realms. Worse, her fellow rulers haven't ceded victory quietly, and there are others in Isla's midst who don't believe her ascent to power was earned. As certain death races toward Lightlark and secrets from the past begin to unravel, Isla must weigh her responsibility to her people against the whims of the most dangerous traitor of all: her heart.
Alex Aster's intricate world expands after the riveting culmination of the Centennial games, delving more deeply into Isla’s memories of her past, as her future hurtles toward two possible fates.
My Review:
Oh, I had such a great time reading this book! I enjoyed the first book, but I also have seen a negative review, which opened my eyes to the flaws in this series, in the writing. I still enjoyed reading this book, but not quite as much as I would've if I hadn't seen the flaws pointed out.
Isla broke the curses, and now things are wildly different. Like she has access to her power, but she doesn't know how to use it. Adding in that Grim and the Nightshades are gearing up for war makes it critical that she master her abilities because every fighter is needed as the situation got more and more dire as people chose their sides. But oh, the truth behind that, what they were fighting for? That's a game changer!
One thing that I really enjoyed about this book was that we got her past perspective when she was getting to know Grim, watching them get to know each other and fall in love, watching her regain these memories of that time with him and how that was affecting their plans for this coming battle, I just loved reading that. Because in the present, she's facing off against Grim, and is in love with Oro. It's complicated, and I don't envy her for being in that position.
I really felt bad for her that she was pulled between these two guys and I'm so excited to see where it's gonna go in the future now that she has all her memories. Adding into that conflict is the fact that there's an even older curse that means only the ruler is powerful, and why the lives of their people is bound to the ruler and a method to get rid of that is killing the king of Lightlark, I really hope that is explored in book 3, not to mention the other world, the bigger land, that they came from.
Reading this book was so good, and I can't wait to see how the story wraps up!
