Week 22 Review: Monstrous

From Goodreads:
Sidney and her friends might have survived the storm that came to the small island of Benediction, but now the storm has reached Boston, and the city isn't prepared for what's coming in this sequel to the "unpredictable" (VOYA) and "fast-paced" (School Library Journal) Savage from New York Times bestselling author Thomas E. Sniegoski.

The horrors that began in Savage continue in Boston as Sydney and her friends work to protect the city from the newly crazed rampage of animals and try to figure out the origin of the storm and its power.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! The first book was just fantastic, and I'm so glad that it's a series, because yeah, I wanted to know more, and I'm so glad that we got it! Because yeah, this story was so good, and it was so great to have more! I just enjoyed it so much!

After the first book, we know a bit about this world. There are things that are still a mystery, and the threat was larger, because hey, a mainland city is bigger than an island town. A lot more people, and while the people aren't contained, yeah. Still, big threat!

Being with these characters again was really great! But of course, they go put themselves in danger. Of course. Plus, we got to get to know some characters that we didn't really before, those two scientists from the beginning of the first book. Plus there were some new characters to get to know, who were really important to the story, who I enjoyed getting to know!

That ending was just killer! With that killer twist-revelation about the attacks, yeah, that just made this book! I don't know if there'll be a 3rd book, but I would totally love that! More time with these characters, and more threats...yeah, that'd be awesome!

Yeah, this book was so fantastic, and I absolutely loved reading it!

Week 22 Review: Songs About a Girl

From Goodreads:
Fifteen-year-old Charlie Bloom receives the invitation of her dreams to take backstage photos for chart-topping boyband Fire & Lights. As she is launched into a world of bloggers and paparazzi, she becomes caught between the dark charms of the band's star member, Gabriel West, and his squeaky clean bandmate Olly Samson. At school, Charlie's growing notoriety makes her a target for bullies and as her connection with Gabriel deepens, she discovers that all of his songs are mysteriously about her.

A modern love story about heartbreak and the power of teenage obsession, SONGS ABOUT A GIRL combines the raw intensity of Twilight with the electrifying pop universe of One Direction. Told with Charlie’s trademark frankness and humour, this tale of teenage obsession and desire will appeal to readers of Zoella, Rainbow Rowell and Holly Smale.

My Review:
This book was a lot of fun to read! I mean, I really enjoy music and singing, and the idea that this book was written to fill the void that One Direction separating for now, well, yeah, that's a really sweet and awesome backstory!

I kinda don't really get being super fans of bands. I mean, like I said, I enjoy music. But I don't get obsessing over the people who create it-and really, not creating all of it, they don't always write the lyrics, or the producer, who brings all the recorded music together. Those people don't get the fame. So yeah, I just don't really get it. Because all bands have them, and it was a part of why she was being bullied. Just, gah.

To be torn between two different guys, and in different ways, is tough, especially when faced with the opportunity to take the pictures, like she's been given. And to have it all in the semi-public eye, that just makes it even worse!

That ending was just killer! This is the start of the series, so yeah, there's room for it to move on from this, not that the ending was bad, it was just that it was bad for the characters! Sure, there's some good parts, but there's also this need for healing to happen. And I can't wait!

I enjoyed this book, and I can't wait to read more of this series, and see where it will go!

Week 22 Review: Spectacle

From Goodreads:
In this riveting sequel to New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent's acclaimed novel Menagerie, Delilah Marlow will discover that there is no crueler cage than the confines of the human mind…

When their coup of Metzger's Menagerie is discovered, Delilah and her fellow cryptids find their newly won freedom brutally stripped away as they are sold into The Savage Spectacle, a private collection of "exotic wildlife." Specializing in ruthless cryptid cage matches, safari-style creature hunts and living party favors, the Spectacle's owner, Willem Vandekamp, caters to the forbidden fetishes of the wealthy and powerful. At the Spectacle, any wish can be granted—for the right price.

But Vandekamp's closely guarded client list isn't the only secret being kept at the Spectacle. Beneath the beauty and brutality of life in the collection lie much darker truths, and no one is more determined than Delilah to strip the masks from the human monsters and drag all dark things into the light.

My Review:
I just absolutely loved reading this book! I did have a bit of a problem getting into it-one of my buttons is captivity, and knowing that it was going to be pushed before going into it, yeah, made me hesitant. But once I really got reading, well, the pages just flew right by! I knew it was going to be an awesome book, and it was!

Knowing that they would be forced into this horrible situation-after freeing themselves from an equally horrible one, was pretty awful. And the reason why it all happened? That was kinda worse, like they were betrayed. Actually, it was worse, because they weren't thought of at all.

The Savage Spectacle was worse than Metzger's Menagerie, because while they weren't starved or anything, they were used as servants, and as sexual playthings. I just wanted Delilah to go all Fury on their butts, to realize that humanity needs an ego check. But no! Gah, the humans in this book were so annoying!

Oh, but that ending! That was really satisfying! Taking down the bad guys, and all that destruction-so they wouldn't have to face this kind of life again. Sure, captivity, but not the control that they were under. Anyways, they got free, and there's the question of the future! So excited!

I can't wait to read more of this amazing series, I need to know how it'll end!

Week 22 Review: Just Kill Me

From Goodreads:
From the author of Play Me Backwards and I Kissed a Zombie and I Liked It comes a dark comedy about one teen's unusual summer job as a ghost tour guide in Chicago.

Megan Henske isn't one to heed warnings…

When the last letters in her alphabet cereal are D, I, and E, she doesn't crawl right back into bed. When her online girlfriend won't text a photo, she just sends more of herself.

And when she realizes that Cynthia, her boss at a Chicago ghost tour company, isn't joking about making stops more haunted by killing people there, she doesn't quit her job—she may even help.

But who is responsible for the deaths of prominent figures in the murdermonger industry? Could it be the head of the rival tour company? Or could it be someone near and dear to Megan?

Soon after she learns that she has an uncanny resemblance to a flapper who disappeared in 1922, Megan receives a warning she can't ignore: the next ghost on the tour might be her…

My Review:
This book was so awesome to read! I really enjoyed it, it was a dark funny, and there was a bit of a mystery, and it came together so well, it was such a great read! I really enjoyed reading about Megan and her smutty fan fic and ghost tours!

I don't think this book is for everyone. It's a little bit off, from the characters to the plot, like shocking people to death to create a ghost for their tours. But that off-ness is something that adds to this book, so if it's something that you enjoy, well, you'll really like this book!

There was a bit of a mystery to this book. Like who the girl she's communicating with is. Of the deaths of the rivals in the tour business. And the flapper of 1922. They were all separate elements, bu they were all really awesome to wonder about!

That ending! There was a bit of "I don't know what's going to happen next, the story isn't done!" I want to know what's going to happen next, and I won't, because this is a stand alone. Ah, well, the whole book was excellent and I'm greedy for wanting more!

Such a wonderful, creepy, amazing book! Really enjoyed it!

Week 22 Review: The Here and Now

From Goodreads:
An unforgettable epic romantic thriller about a girl from the future who might be able to save the world . . . if she lets go of the one thing she's found to hold on to.

Follow the rules. Remember what happened. Never fall in love.

This is the story of seventeen-year-old Prenna James, who immigrated to New York when she was twelve. Except Prenna didn't come from a different country. She came from a different time—a future where a mosquito-borne illness has mutated into a pandemic, killing millions and leaving the world in ruins.

Prenna and the others who escaped to the present day must follow a strict set of rules: never reveal where they're from, never interfere with history, and never, ever be intimate with anyone outside their community. Prenna does as she's told, believing she can help prevent the plague that will one day ravage the earth.

But everything changes when Prenna falls for Ethan Jarves.

My Review:
This book was really awesome and weird! I really enjoyed reading it! I haven't read her big main series, but that totally doesn't matter because this is a stand alone book. Anyways. I really enjoyed this world of going back in time to escape a pretty horrible future!

The future that Prenna and the others left was awful, and they were right to want to change it. But their rules, they were just begging for someone to break them. And to put on these people the idea that if would be their fault if the plague happened, well, it already did, they're trying to change it. Gah! Well, they said they would, but leadership, man, are they controlling and awful and cowards!

That ending was so bittersweet! I mean, they made sure that her data wasn't lost, but she still was killed. But since it might have been Ethan who they had to keep from dying...yeah. But then there's the whole, different microbes/diseases, made for a not totally happy ending!

Honestly, I would rather either the book be longer, since it was just over 200 pages, and there could've been more story, so maybe there could've been a solution. Either that, or a sequel, so we could have much more, and definitely have a happier ending!

This was a really enjoyable book, and I really enjoyed reading it!

Week 22 Review: This Is Where the World Ends

From Goodreads:
The heart-wrenching new novel about best friends on a collision course with the real world, from the author of Falling into Place.

Janie and Micah, Micah and Janie. That's how it’s been ever since elementary school, when Janie Vivian moved next door. Janie says Micah is everything she is not. Where Micah is shy, Janie is outgoing. Where Micah loves music, Janie loves art. It's the perfect friendship, as long as no one finds out about it.

But when Janie is date-raped by the most popular guy in school—a guy she's had a crush on for years—she finds herself ostracized by all the people she thought were her friends. Now only Micah seems to believe she's telling the truth. But when even Micah expresses doubt about whether or not she was "asking for it," it leads to disastrous consequences, and Janie Vivian goes missing.

Using a nonlinear writing style and dual narrators, Amy Zhang's astonishing second novel masterfully reveals the circumstances surrounding Janie's disappearance.

My Review:
I enjoyed reading this book a lot! It was totally confusing, but it was just so great! There was a back and forth between the past and the present, where Micah doesn't know what's happened. Which was really great, and totally confusing! There were also the journal entries that Janie did, that progress her journey, from believing in fairytales, to well, not.

I really enjoyed these characters. Micah and Janie, they were best friends, and they were meant to be together, and she knew that. She just wanted to have her fun first, so that their relationship was hidden

Like I mentioned earlier, this book caused a lot of confusion for me. Micah didn't know what was going on, and he is a teenaged boy, and there was alcohol, so sometimes, I wasn't sure what the heck was going on. Like, was he imagining things, or what? It didn't matter too much since it was after the fact, but it was a part of the story!

One of the biggest issues in this book was consent. Like, theme-wise, not the amount of time it got in this book, because it was a problem, and that problem caused the big decisions to be made. Anyways. When someone says no, stop, even if they're your significant other, because that doesn't give you the right to their body. Only they can give it, and if they say no, they're not giving it, and if you take it, well, that's wrong! It's that simple, and I really wish that it wasn't an issue. Hopefully we as a society will get rid of it!

Amy Zhang's first book ended on a pretty positive note. This one, it was a bit more bittersweet. After everything that had happened, it kinda felt like, it couldn't have a positive ending. There was some good, because he accepted what happened, but yeah, it was bittersweet!

This was a really fantastic book, it was just really enjoyable!

Week 22 Review: Dare You

From Goodreads:
In the second book of the suspenseful Shade Me trilogy, Nikki Kill becomes embroiled in another mystery where only her synesthesia can help her unravel the dark truth.

Nikki Kill didn't realize that trying to find out who killed Peyton Hollis would tangle her in a web of dangerous family secrets that would rock her identity to the core. But now that Nikki knows the truth, the all-powerful Hollises want to frame her for Peyton's murder.

And now Nikki's only chance at escaping the cold black bars of prison or the crimson grip of death is teaming up with the enigmatic Detective Martinez and relying on an ever-shifting kaleidoscope of clues...

My Review:
I loved reading this book! It was just so freaking great, and after the ending of Shade Me, well, I was really excited to see where things would go! And yeah, this book starts off about 7 months later, so Nikki's had a chance to rest before going on another adventure!

Finding out that she had a sister, Peyton, was pretty huge for Nikki. Her parents held secrets, secrets that were now affecting her. Add in that the Hollises aren't really being punished, well, that was all very frustrating!

I really enjoyed this investigation, because more and more, Nikki leaned on Detective Martinez, and it was really great to get to know him better. And what with Nikki being framed for Peyton's murder, well, it just added that something extra to the investigation!

Things came to a head, and there were some pretty big revelations. Like the Hollises had Dru's mom killed, so shortly after Nikki had met her. It was a pretty satisfying ending, besides Luna. Gah, Luna! And there's still the mystery of Nikki's mom's death!

This book was just incredible, and I can't wait for the 3rd book!

Week 22 Review: The Dastardly Miss Lizzie

From Goodreads:
Dr. Eliza Jekyll must turn to her dark side, Miss Lizzie Hyde, to stop a madman who's targeting London's most important scientists and sorcerers, terrorizing the city with dark magic, in this third Electric Empire novel—a dazzlingly original steampunk fantasy set in the gritty world of alternate Victorian London, with echoes of H. G. Wells's classic, The Time Machine.

Being two people in one body isn't easy. Metropolitan Police crime scene physician Eliza Jekyll is trying to maintain a semblance of control, even as her rebellious second self, Lizzie, grows increasingly wild—threatening the respectable Eliza's reputation and her marriage to Remy Lafayette, the Royal Society investigator and occasional lycanthrope. With England on the brink of war, Remy's away in sorcery-riddled Paris on a secretive mission that grows ever more sinister. Has he been an enemy agent all along? Or is coping with her secret divided self finally driving Eliza mad?

Eliza needs her mind clear and sharp if she's to catch an evil genius who is killing eminent scientists. The chase uncovers a murky world of forbidden books, secret laboratories, and a cabal of fanatical inventors whose work could change the world—or destroy it—and who may hold answers to Eliza's mysterious past.

As sorcery-wielding terrorists attack London, Eliza discovers her own enemies are closing in, driving her to desperate measures—enlisting the aid of the wily, resourceful, mercurial Lizzie—to thwart the killer. But Lizzie's got her own life now, and true to her nature, will resort to the devious and diabolical to keep it. Even if it means throwing Eliza to the wolves, and letting the world burn. . .

My Review:
I loved reading this book! This series has been so great (and while my memory is horrible, so I don't remember a lot of the first two books) and this book totally joins its ranks, and overall improves the series, and each subsequent book in a series should!

Lizzie is a lot more present in this book.  Because Eliza can see her, it's not just a voice in her head-and as it turns out, someone else can see Lizzie. Maybe. So besides the whole murder case and investigation, there's also the personal stuff, Remy, and keeping her Lizzie secret, well, secret!

And I loved how things played out! Some of the attitudes were really annoying, like woman of science but not means just had to be whores to support themselves, that they shouldn't work. There was just so much going on, and I loved how things all came together!

With that ending, I'm not sure whether or not I want a 4th book or not. Things are pretty well wrapped up, just a few threads left, and both Eliza and Lizzie seem to be in a good place. So yeah, I'm conflicted, because reading about these characters in this world is just so great!

Loved reading this book, it was just utterly fantastic!

Week 22 Reviews: The Caretaker, The Cage

From Goodreads:
All the books in THE CAGE series are told from a variety of perspectives: Cora, our main protagonist, but also from Lucky, Leon, Mali, Nok, and Rolf. Through all of this, I always felt as though one perspective was missing: Cassian's. Because he belongs to a non-human, super-intelligent race, his motives are often mysterious and difficult to interpret.

We are left wondering if he is their abductor, their savior, or something else entirely. While I love this sense of mystery regarding Cassian, I also wanted to dive deeper into his character and include some "behind the scenes" sections showing what he was up to while Cora and her friends were trying to navigate the Cage's dangerous puzzles. In THE CAGE, we learn what it is about Cassian that enchants Cora, and now we get to see what it is about Cora–from the first moment he saw her on Earth–that draws Cassian to her, too. Enjoy!

From Goodreads:
The Maze Runner meets Scott Westerfeld in this gripping new series about teens held captive in a human zoo by an otherworldly race. From Megan Shepherd, the acclaimed author of The Madman's Daughter trilogy.

When Cora Mason wakes in a desert, she doesn't know where she is or who put her there. As she explores, she finds an impossible mix of environments—tundra next to desert, farm next to jungle, and a strangely empty town cobbled together from different cultures—all watched over by eerie black windows. And she isn't alone.

Four other teenagers have also been taken: a beautiful model, a tattooed smuggler, a secretive genius, and an army brat who seems to know too much about Cora's past. None of them have a clue as to what happened, and all of them have secrets. As the unlikely group struggles for leadership, they slowly start to trust each other. But when their mysterious jailer—a handsome young guard called Cassian—appears, they realize that their captivity is more terrifying than they could ever imagine: Their captors aren't from Earth. And they have taken the five teenagers for an otherworldly zoo—where the exhibits are humans.

As a forbidden attraction develops between Cora and Cassian, she realizes that her best chance of escape might be in the arms of her own jailer—though that would mean leaving the others behind. Can Cora manage to save herself and her companions? And if so . . . what world lies beyond the walls of their cage?

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading these stories! I did read them together, because while The Caretaker starts before The Cage, it does time jump a few times, and about 2/3rds take place alongside The Cage, so I read them like that. Which was so great, seeing her thoughts, and then his thoughts! Tricky, tricky!

Honestly, the thought of humanity being a lower species, not intelligent, because we don't have psychic powers, well, is insulting. And infuriating. It's like, what gives you the right to decide what makes up intelligence? Gah! And the test to prove a race is worthy to set up in intelligence is called The Gauntlet? Yeah, not cool!

I really enjoyed getting to know these people. We mostly had Cora's POV, but we had a few of the others, learning their secrets, and yeah, I really enjoyed that! Adding in The Caretaker, we saw a lot of the world, but at the same time, it's only a sliver!

That ending was just pure evil! To break her, betray her, to awaken her psychic abilities, is pretty horrendous. But his motives were good, so the future books will tell if Cora forgives him or not. I can't wait to read and see what happens next!

I absolutely loved reading these two books, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Week 22 Review: Before the Dawn

From Goodreads:
The Killer Instinct series from New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Eden continues as an FBI profiler tracks a case that resurrects ghosts from his past

Ex-SEAL Tucker Frost knows that the world is full of evil. He saw it in the face of his own brother, Mason Frost, a cold, methodical, sadistic killer. A killer Tucker put down with his own hands in order to save Mason's final victim—Dawn Alexander, the only girl who got away from the infamous "Iceman."

It's Tucker's up close and personal experience with evil that's made him perfect for Samantha Dark's experimental profiling division in the FBI. Samantha wants agents who have personal ties with killers, who have unique insights into the minds of monsters. And when women start turning up murdered with the same MO used by the Iceman, Tucker is sent back to Louisiana to investigate.

The last person he expects to see is his ex-lover, Dawn. Ten full years have passed since the night that Tucker faced down his brother…and since he last saw Dawn. But the dark need still burns just as hot between Tucker and Dawn. As they grapple with a desire that never died, they must also face the shared shadow from their pasts. Both Tucker and Dawn have the same question—has Mason Frost come back from the dead to hunt again? And this time, will he succeed in killing the victim who got away?

My Review:
This book was really fantastic! I really hope that we get more books in this series, because yeah, these characters are fantastic, and this world with the group of people who were connected intensely with serial killers and now work to catch them!

We briefly met Tucker in the last book. And yeah, it was great to get his POV in this book, mixed with Dawn's. They had a really great relationship, until his brother kidnaps and tortures her, and Tucker kills him to protect her. And yeah, that complicated things!

The mystery was personal to Tucker and Dawn, since the killer was basically continuing the Iceman's work, either the original, or a new killer. So there was that component of investigating the case. After all, that's the reason why this unit was created!

Really enjoyed watching Tucker and Dawn together, given their past, and their chemistry together. Given that her life is threatened, well, yeah, that intensifies things. Loved how it all came together and they beat the bad guy!

This book was just so great, and yeah, I really hope for a 3rd book!

"The first thing you should probably know is that Yvonne Worthington Chase was dead. It was all over the news when it happened, the entertainment shows, the newspapers and magazines, even the trashy tabloids. A sudden tragedy-that's how the media described it, because she was only fortysomething when it happened, plus Yvonne was famous, so her death was considered a much bigger deal than an ordinary person's." -The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand

Using Random.org, I got 2937 which turned out to be The Devil's Footprints by Amanda Stevens! It's been on my TBR pile since August 19th 2012, and I added it because I really enjoyed it, but I read it before I joined Goodreads! Happy reading!

Third Sentence Thursday #303, June 1st

Third Sentence Thursday is a weekly meme which likes to watch fireworks especially while eating a cookie!
1) Take the book you are currently reading and open it to a random page. Share the third full sentence on that page. (If there isn't a third one – like at the end of a chapter or a blank page – you can share the third sentence of the book or just choose another random page.) Feel free to share more than one sentence, if you feel the need to do so.
2) Review this sentence anyway you want (funny and silly reviews encouraged)
3) Post a link to your sentence at Words I Write Crazy (This Blog)
4) Visit one or two of the other blogs to check out their third sentences!

"As Conquest, he's an incarnation of the white rider." -Seeker by Veronica Rossi, page 16.

Ok. Sounds like a statement of fact, so I can't really say anything else to say!

What are your guy's 3rd lines? Link up below!

Will the Time Come #313, June 1st

Every Thursday I am going to list a book which I really want to read/keep meaning to get to. These are mostly books which have been on my shelf for awhile now but don't have to be, maybe you got it two weeks ago and really want to read it! Thanks to Jodie from Books for Company for this meme!

When rebellion destroys the underground world in which Thimble and Stone have grown up, they take Stone's son and try to escape the chaos. Along the way, they must evade the Freaks, beings who feed on human flesh. Leaving behind the roles of Builder and Breeder which they were assigned at birth, they wander the underground tunnels, looking for safety yet afraid to go "topside" where legend has it that the light and water will burn their skin from their bones.

Their journey takes them upward to an unimagined world of tinned food, comfortable furniture, and books. Away from their regimented society for the first time, and still facing imminent danger, Thimble and Stone acknowledge the forbidden attraction which both have denied for years.

Why the time hasn't come yet...
Probably because I have to reread the series, and I haven't gotten around to that. But hopefully soon! What about you guys? Happy reading!
