Week 43 Reviews: Fumiko and the Finicky Nestmate, Tsumiko and the Enslaved Fox, Kimiko and the Accidental Proposal, Taminko and the Two Janitors, Mikoto and the Reaver Village

She could make a mess of everything. Especially him.

The Junzi—also known as the Four Gentlemen—are a set of ancient weapons fashioned from remnants. Dragons refer to them as the Four Storms, and Hisoka Twineshaft believes they will make a difference in the hunt for the rogue. But someone else is interested in gathering up these crystal masterpieces. The so-called Gentleman Bandit is responsible for two thefts already, and Hisoka is concerned for the Bamboo Stave. So he deploys an elite taskforce to guard the treasure. And to catch a thief.

Juuyu Farroost and his teammates regroup at a safehouse tucked under the boughs of one of the oldest—and most heavily fortified—orphan trees in the Americas. Fumiko and her tree twin have enough rooms for all of them. If they can shift enough of the woman's clutter to set up their equipment. Juuyu's expertise is essential to the success of their mission, but he can barely focus thanks to Fumiko, her messes, and Akira, who apparently owes Boon a favor.

From Goodreads:
Tsumiko inherits an ancestral home, a vast fortune, and a butler who isn't exactly human.

Humanity is rocked by the Emergence of a people who call themselves the Amaranthine. They are our myths and legends come to life. Neither human nor animal, yet embracing qualities of both, the inhuman races inspire both awe and fear. Every newsfeed is clogged with updates about the peace process, but some places don't concern themselves with worldly affairs. Like the girls' school run by Saint Midori's of the Heavenly Lights, where Tsumiko Hajime grew up.

A letter from a long-lost aunt names Tsumiko heiress to an ancestral estate and its accompanying fortune. Only the legacy comes with an aloof heirloom: an inhuman butler. Argent has served the Hajime family for centuries, and Tsumiko must renew the generational bond or he'll die. Argent hates her for the hold she has over him, but he craves her soul almost as much as he craves his freedom.

From Goodreads:
She wasn't aware of her gift's significance, yet he expects to be courted.

Kimiko enrolls at the In-between's prestigious new high school, which is designed to promote the integration of the human and inhuman races. As a reaver, she's supposed to act as peacemaker, bridging a formidable cultural gap, but the other two members of her triad don't need any help in that department. Akira and Suuzu have been friends since middle school. Instead, the boys must rally behind Kimiko when she inadvertently initiates a courtship with Eloquence Starmark.

In doing her part for world peace, she puts one crosser's whole world at risk.

Conspiracy theories, werewolf scares, and protest rallies have hampered the peace process in America, where social and political unrest keep most Amaranthine from declaring themselves. Those not in seclusion rely heavily on illusion to mask their true nature.

As the newly appointed principal of a small elementary school, Tamiko Reaverson is doing her part for world peace. She rallies her community's support and applies for Hisoka Twineshaft's school revitalization project, which will bring Amaranthine to her hometown. Little does Tami realize that Fletching was founded by one of the oldest and largest urban enclaves in the United States. And two of her staunchest supporters—janitors at her school—share a secret neither wants exposed.

From Goodreads:
This summer is his last chance to win his first love.

Wardenclave has always been a place of secrets and sway. For most of the year, the remote mountain village is closed off from the rest of the world, but each spring, they issue invitations to the most promising young reavers all over the world. Summer skill camps provide opportunities for the elite to train with the best. And by longstanding tradition, for teens of the In-between to evaluate the compatibility of their peers. Glint Starmark's reputation as a matchmaker has been holding true for millennia.

At seventeen, Mikoto Reaver is the youngest headman in Wardenclave's history. He's had very little time to adjust to his new role before their close-knit community opens its doors to children of pedigree, the specialists who will mentor them, an allotment of battlers, and a celebrity or two. Glint means well, but Mikoto won't commit until he can speak to the only girl he's ever loved. There's just something about her.

My second review of Tsumiku and the Enslaved Fox, Kimiko and the Accidental Proposal, Tamiko and the Two Janitors
My Review:
I loved reading these books! I wasn't planning on reading this series again, but I finished Fumiko, and I just had to reread the whole series. And I'm so glad that I did, because I forgot so much, like the mentions of the Four Gentlemen before Fumiko.

Akira and Suuzu have been in this series from the beginning, but before Fumiko, the book they were in the most was Kimiko. So I was really great to have more of them (and who the finicky nestmate is!) but I'm hoping, given the way that Fumiko ended, that their story will continue in the next book! And with the title of the next book, that's increasing my hope!

I really enjoyed the story in Fumiko, she's had it pretty rough, given that's she's a tree kin with a tree located in a urban area, where she's all alone. That's not going to happen to Tami, because there's all that space that the farm has. And Fumiko has been around for a long while, and has so many memories, it's a little hard to keep track. Plus there's her agreement with the Reavers, that every 100 years, she has kids, and they all go be reavers. And that's just awful! So I'm glad that she found someone who could always be there, and that agreement is probably not going to happen anymore, and that's fantastic!

I've read most of this series twice before. The only one that I hadn't was Mikoto, and that's the one that I forgot the most about. Like Sinder's story, because he is in Fumiko. So I'm really glad that I did reread this series, and see all this world again! Though I really need to read the Songs of the Amaranthine series!

Also, it seems like Hajime's are everywhere in this series! There's Tsumiko and her brother of course, then there's Kyrie's biological mom, then there's Joe, which means Tami, and then their mom as well. And there's Mikoto's mom. Just everywhere!

There's one plot besides the rogue (or could connect to the rogue at some point, but hasn't been made clear in the series yet) and that's the bindings, the one on Argent, and the one on Joe. Because at one point it was speculated that the former was done by dragons, and the latter was similar as to be done by the same person...

I am a bit confused by a few things. Mainly to do with the Tree Kin. I can see how Joe is a third twin since Tami was the replacement twin and it was supposed to be their Grandpa's sister, but I'm a bit more confused by Hisoka. My best guess is that his parent either had a seed, or had something with a tree, and gave birth to twins, and Hisoka Twineshaft's sibling was the one born with the seed in hand and planted it, making Hisoka a third twin. But I'm not sure.

But also, that ending of Fumiko, my best guess of what happened is that part of being a tribute for peace, he needs to have a child to be a tree kin, to plant another tree, and that Akira will just plant one of the other seeds that was there, because they wouldn't take the seed from Suuzu's child's hand. But again, I'm not sure!

These were really fantastic reads, and I can't wait for the next book!

Week 43 Reviews: The Void Mage, Remnants, Echoes

From Goodreads:
After two years of training in Turransky under a new master, Rena is a proper Void Mage, supposedly ready to handle whatever the world throws at her. Which is just as well because
Toh'sello's influence has proven it can pop shards up anywhere at any given time across all three continents, with nothing to use to predict it. Worse still, it doesn't seem to have any real restrictions. Meaning they're in the middle of a losing battle, and even if they destroy the shards, they're losing the overall war.

The Magical Intercontinental Specialist Division approach her, asking for help and offering support in dealing with the shards, but Rena senses it's not just the shards they want help with.

She has a terrible premonition about what they really want her to destroy, and she's not sure if anyone has enough power to accomplish it.

Rena just wonders how long it will take before someone says it out loud.

Finally over with the wedding, managed to escape the parents, signed up with the MISD, yay! Got assigned a permanent team with Chi, Vee, and Maksohm, double yay! Toh'sellor has been stolen.

Yeah, this is not going to be fun.

It is, in fact, anti-fun.

Oh, and monkeys. Poor Chi.

With the root of all evil—at least in Bannen's opinion—behind lock and key, the team is finally free to do something else with their lives. Bannen quite looks forward to living in Gargan, the new house being built, with the occasional mission to spice things up.

Sure, the MISD thinks he needs therapy after everything he's lived through in the past three years. But Bannen is reasonably sure he can get around that. They just need the downtime necessary to get Chi through therapy, as he's the one who actually needs it. Peace and relaxation, that's the theme of the day.

So someone needs to explain to him how they ended up chasing after a rumored Void Mage, tunneling through mountains, and embroiling themselves into a danger that not even the giants of Gargan want to face.

Because that is not Bannen's idea of a good adventure.

My Review:
Oh, this series! I'm so glad that I could jump in and finish it off not long after reading the 1st book. Well, finished off as is, because there is the chance for more, if the author coming up with a plot, but given that it's been 3 years since Echoes came out, that's less likely. But it'd be awesome!

The Void Mage picks up a few years after the end of The Human Familiar, and that was a mixed bag, because we get to see them all trained up and strong and confident, but I would've loved to see their training. And then things go pretty wild!

One thing that I found hugely helpful for me, is that on Honor Raconteur's website, there is a map, and I Could see where they were going, because there's a lot of travel in these books! I could see where all these places that they were traveling to, and it gave just that extra emersion into the world!

Oh, how I adored Rena and Bannen. After they knew that Void Mages marry their familiars, well, it added some tension between them. I loved that they gave in, and just adored their relationship! I'm so happy that they worked things out!

I loved watching these characters team up. Bannen and Chi were just utterly hilarious, and I loved their interactions. Like when they were bored, and chose to do some activities that their wives were displeased about, like taking an obstacle course. I just loved them!

And then there was them facing off against the Toh'sello and the shards. It's pretty intense, and it makes sense why they'd need therapy, all that risk that they were in. But they triumphed against it, because Rena is an amazing Void Mage!

I loved reading these books, and I need to read more of Honor Raconteur's backlist! But first, a reread of the later 3 books of the Case Files of Henri Davenforth Series before book 7 comes out!

Week 43 Review: Sorcery of Thorns

From Goodreads:
From the New York Times bestselling author of An Enchantment of Ravens comes an imaginative fantasy about an apprentice at a magical library who must battle a powerful sorcerer to save her kingdom.

All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer's Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery—magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power.

Then an act of sabotage releases the library's most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth's desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them.

As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she's been taught—about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.

My first review of Sorcery of Thorns
My Review:
This book is just so fantastic! I loved it the first time, and it was an excellent read the second, knowing where things were going to go, and just loving the journey! This world is so amazing and wonderful to read about, and I really do hope that we'll get another story set in it, even a short story or novella, because I just want more! There's just so amazing elements in this book that come together really well!

Elizabeth is a fantastic character! I just love her love for the library, she knows it's contents are dangerous, and she's respectful of that! She's been raised in on the of the branches, and it's not like that's a typical thing! I loved her views of the world!

Knowing who the bad guy was, what the plan was, it was really interesting to see all these pieces coming together! An watching that along side Elizabeth and Nathaniel, well, I loved their chemistry and banter, so watching both plots was a delight!

I still absolutely love that ending, of the library fighting back, and of the teamwork of our gang of three! And how Silas doesn't answer to his demon summoning name, but to Silas, that is just really perfect end to this book!

I love this book so much, and more would be just so very much appreciated!

From Goodreads:
New York Times bestselling author Maria V. Snyder wowed readers with Poison Study, the unforgettable story of poison taster Yelena. Now she's back with a new tale of intrigue.

Once, only her own life hung in the balance.

Oddly enough, when Yelena was a poison taster, her life was simpler. But she'd survived to become a vital part of the balance of power between rival countries Ixia and Sitia. Now she uses her magic to keep the peace in both lands and protect her relationship with Valek.

Suddenly, though, they are beset on all sides by those vying for power through politics and intrigue. Valek's job - and his life - are in danger. As Yelena tries to uncover the scope of these plots, she faces a new challenge: her magic is blocked. She must keep that a secret - or her enemies will discover just how vulnerable she really is - while searching for who or what is responsible for neutralizing her powers.

Yes, the days of tasting poisons were much simpler. And certainly not as dangerous...

From Goodreads:
While trying to teach her adopted daughter, Reema, how to work with molten glass, Opal receives a letter from Master Magician Zitora Cowan requesting Opal's immediate help. Zitora resigned from the Sitian Council over two years ago to search for her lost sister, and no one has heard from her since. The letter is probably a trick, but Opal refuses to pass up the opportunity to help her mentor, who may be in genuine trouble. Good thing Opal isn't that easy to fool. With her two soldier friends Nic and Eve providing backup, the three travel to a small town in the Jewelrose Clan. But can they rescue the Master Magician without being caught in the same trap?

From Goodreads:
New York Times bestselling author Maria V. Snyder brings her Poison Study series to its exhilarating conclusion.

Despite the odds, Yelena and Valek have forged an irrevocable bond and a family that transcends borders. Now, when their two homelands stand on the brink of war, they must fight with magic and cunning to thwart an Ixian plot to invade Sitia.

Yelena seeks to break the hold of the insidious Theobroma that destroys a person's resistance to magical persuasion. But the Cartel is determined to keep influential citizens and Sitian diplomats in thrall and Yelena at bay. With every bounty hunter after her, Yelena is forced to make a dangerous deal.

With might and magic, Valek peels back the layers of betrayal surrounding the Commander. At its rotten core lies a powerful magician and his latest discovery. The fate of all rests upon two unlikely weapons. One may turn the tide. The other could spell the end of everything.

From Goodreads:
Short Story containing Yelena, Valek, Janco & Ari set after events in Dawn Study. This can be read for free on Maria V Snyder's website.

WARNING: This story contains spoilers for the series so please don't read until after Dawn Study!

My first review of Shadow Study, Night Study, Shattered Glass, Dawn Study
My Review:
Yeah, for the first time, I've reread these books! I love this world, but it's been so long since I've read this latest trilogy, and I had to rea it again! I love what happens in these books, even though it's hard on the characters, and they're just fantastic books!

Yelena has a story arc of losing her powers, and finding out why, and dealing with that why. On the other hand, Valek has a perspective in this book (first time in the Ixia series for a multi-perspective book) and it's a pretty big story of his past, and his present, and how it'll affect his future, and it's so great!

Speaking of perspectives, in Shadow Study, we had Janco's perspective, in Night Study we had Leif's, and in Dawn Study, we had both, as well as a few one off chapters, which was so very fantastic! I loved seeing more of this world!

This world changes because of the events in this book! Yelena's stories are all big, huge political things. But I'm really hoping that sometime in the future, we'll get the next generation's stories. Of Fisk, Reana, and Liana!

I love reading this series so much, and I hope the gap between this read and the next isn't so large next time!
